Israel’s Role and the Way Forward

When I was a younger man, my father told me a joke that has always stuck with me. It went something like this: On his knees, the Masochist looks up at the Sadist and pleads, “Hit me, hit me!” Coolly, the Sadist looks down at the Masochist and responds with relish, “Nooooo.”

As I matured, I began to see the nuance and depth of this joke. There is something comically brilliant in its reversal of expectation in the Sadist’s sheer enjoyment of withholding the beating that the Masochist so deeply craves. More importantly, it captures the interdependent relationship between Masochist and Sadist. They need one another to fulfill their roles just as Vladimir needs Estragon and vice versa as they perpetually wait for the ever absent Godot.

In recent years, this joke has begun to resonate even more strongly as I began to see Israel willfully playing the role of Masochist to the world’s Sadist. Is there not some aspect of Israeli foreign policy that perversely enjoys suffering? Over and over again, Israel returns to the world stage for yet another beating, another U.N. condemnation, another soul ripping flagellation at the hands of its enemies. The only thing is that this is no joke. This is a nightmare come to life.

What does Israel do in response to these condemnations? After weakly protesting in the form of yet another eloquent speech, it then returns to the stage for yet another beating, “Please sire, hit me again.” Like the Rabbi of Rome summoned by the Pope in medieval times for the ceremonial slap at Easter, Israel dutifully complies to play the role of “Kike” on the world stage.  After all, the only thing that unites the United Nations of the world is their blind hatred of Jews. The world needs their Emmanuel Goldstein aka Israel which brings the nations of the world together in a fury of unmitigated hatred.

It is not out of some great love and respect of Arabs that the world unites in an unprecedented action of voting to create a spurious, Palestinian “abomi-nation.”  Rather, it is out of a vehement hatred of Jews . Only eight nations other than Israel had the resolve and moral courage to vote against it. The creation of a “Palestinian” state is simply a method to tighten the noose around Israel’s neck and bring it a step closer to annihilation. It does not matter that the Arabs signed the Oslo Agreement which specifically negates such an action. In the world of Jew hatred, however, there is only one unwritten law: Everything is legal when it comes to bringing about the extinction of the Jews.

The Jew hating nations of the world have learned their lessons well from their Nazi mentors. You see, the Nazis perfected the use of law to legitimize genocide. The Nazis were expert at writing law to first ostracize and then exterminate their Jewish victims. They comprehended that the malleable legal system can be used to justify anything.  In that iniquitous tradition, the United Nations use that ignoble institution to bludgeon Israel time and time again. The creation of a spurious “Palestinian State” is merely a legalized form of Judea-cide, another nail in the coffin of Israel and Judaism.  Is it any wonder that Germany, unable to truly shake off its Nazi past, “abstained” in the vote?  I suppose they just can’t wait to see the Jewish question answered by their old Islamic allies.  Apparently, in Deutschland, old habits die hard.

Certainly, after years of unrelenting international Jew hatred, an unending war with their Arab neighbors, and the recent rise of the Islamic juggernaut of unprecedented immigration which is crushing an effete Europe, Israel finds itself more isolated than ever. It confronts an international malevolent behemoth of unmitigated Jew hatred. However, there is a way to defeat this beast and emerge victorious.   To do this one must make vital changes in both foreign and domestic policy.  Naturally, it does not hurt to have the tenacity of will to achieve it.

The first step involves changing one’s behavior and actions. You cannot keep acting the same way and expect different results.  If you want to change something, you first have to change yourself.   As in a Hollywood film, the protagonist’s actions define his character.  Or, to put it more simply, you are what you do.

What is Israel’s first action? How does it redefine its new character, its new persona? How does it announce itself anew to the vile and corrupt world? The answer is to be found in the past, the ultimate guide, The Torah. When the shepherd, David, hears that King Saul will reward his daughter’s hand in matrimony to any man brave enough to confront Goliath, he responds, “Would not any Jew destroy this Goliath, not for the sake of riches or for the hand of the king’s daughter, but simply to defend and sanctify God’s name and the pride of His people, which this arrogant villain dares to defile?”

David, the shepherd steps forward not for reward, but with the understanding that “God will protect me when I go to save the dignity and fate of my people, in a fight with a vicious heathen who dared profane God’s holy name!” How many times must the world profane God’s name, Jewish pride, Jewish lives, before Israel responds in kind?

After years of abuse, Israel acts not like a proud shepherd boy serving God and defending his people, but more like a victim of spousal abuse loyally serving a malicious husband.  Israel beats its breast and complains about how the world treats it and yet always comes back for more punishment.  No longer does Israel act out of pride, but out of shame. Like an oppressed shtetl Jew, Israel allows the most inhuman abuses to be heaped upon it without any serious repercussions.

So how does Israel change its role in the world? How does it move from being the world’s whipping boy to a King David? The very first step is for Israel to leave the international house of ill-repute, the United Nations, and withdraw its membership.  This first step will reverberate around the world and make all the difference.  It will be the first move to redefine itself as a leader of freedom and liberty and achieving the ends it most desires: peace, security and prosperity.

The new world leader of freedom and liberty holding millions under occupation and military rule and itself living behind walls and barbed wire.Surely a model the world is eager to follow and copy.

And talking about masochism. The gold medal must go to the current US administration, who despite continuous public slaps in the face from Israels' Right wing leaders and their aggressive campainge against Obama during the recent elections continues to support Israel diplomitically, financially and militarily.

    • Mary Sue

hey, Jack-on-crack. The Palestinians wouldn't know freedom if it bit them in the behind. Palestinians are freer in Israel (NOT Gaza, where their own dictators screw them over) than they are anywhere else in that corner of the world.

Obummer doesn't support Israel as much as you think he does. It's mostly lip service.

I hope that the trend our groups have observed in ancestral Eretz Israel, after the "un" abomination will soon come to be reality.. UM-SHMUM said Ben Gurion a few years back. That stage is for the Islamic monsters and their oil slaves.
We returned last evening from a five day visit to our children who built their homes in Samaria,
Judea and Samaria have been for thousands of years part of the Land of Israel and is fast now being returned to the fold. Hundreds of new homes are again starting to be built there.
Invented peoples will have to internalize the facts. Rome and other invaders ended their cycles and one by one faded as powers and we, the Jewish people reclaim our Heritage.
Including the Temple items stolen by Rome and still kept by the Vatican. They must return what they stole.

    • Drakken

Your fight is not with the Vatican my friend, it is with the muslims, and once you put those savages to the sword, everybody else with take note.

Arab states and other Muslim states already control the major block of votes and you want Israel to leave the UN? A better solution is to dismantle this useless corrupt international body to maintain the Arab refugees for 60 decades as a weapon against Israel. All other refugees never a UN body dedicated only to them and all settled wherever they end up even if they did not speak the language. The Arab refugees are in camps in Arab lands, with no rights because their brothers who created them refuse them citizenship. At the same time Jewish refugees from all Arab lands were absorb on day one in Israel as citizens with no UN help. From where I stand this is horrible. Just for this the UN should be dismantled. Add to this that our tax Dollars keeps this monstrosity called the UN alive.

This article is exactly on target. It is the cowardice and corruption of the current Jewish leadership that keeps Israel in a perpetual state of suffering. The only party in Israel that offers a sensible response and a plan is Manhigut Yehudit – The Jewish Leadership Movement led by Moshe Feiglin. visit http://www.jewishisrael.org/

  • marios

Yes, it is in prophecy and it is in Bible. However it is unacceptable that innocent people of Israel live under threat of Arab terrorists acts on daily basis. How it's happened that winners allowed to transform themselves into victims of murderous defeated Muslim monsters? Democracy must protect themselves. Israel leftists as USA leftists are enemy of civilized people, enemy of Israel and support those brutal animals Islamo-Nazists who want to destroy Israel and USA as well. Prostitute Europe is already EurAbia. If people prefer to be blind and deaf they always will be annihilated by brutal savages, Islamo-Nazists in this case. We must demand our Representatives in Congress to stop finance UN as hostile organization to USA and their ally Israel. Otherwise we are suicidal nation.

So Israeli and Americqan leftists, prostitute Europe, Islamo-Nazi and the UN are all evil and right-wingnuts isreali and Neoc-cons are righteous one?. Do you realize that Isreal wouldn't be legitimate if it were not for UN recognition and the help of "prostitute Europe", particulary GB, because otherwise the establishment of Isreal is neither morally, historically or culturally legitimate. Morally illegitimate because it displaced the indigenous people and was created on blood of millions of innocent jews. Just consider this quote from Isreal first president Ben Gurion in December 1938, "If I knew it was possible to save all the children in Germany by taking them to England, and only half of the children by taking them to Eretz Israel, I would choose the second solution. For we must take into account not only the lives of these children but also the history of the people of Israel", which they evidently did when they refused the offer to transfer "prostitute European jews' to Dominican Republic , Kenya or Madgascar.

        Ben Gurion and the Holocaust

        • One of the particularly offensive canards long bandied about by so-called "post-Zionists" and anti-Zionist radicals is that Zionists collaborated with the Nazis to promote immigration to Palestine against overall Jewish interests and the survival of European Jews. Citing Lenni Brenner's Zionists in the Age of the Dictators — which has been thoroughly discredited as an unscholarly combination of fabrication, exaggeration and quotations distorted through lack of context (Walter Laqueur, "The Anti-Zionism of Fools," The New Republic, Nov. 1, 1987) — Ignatiev attempts to promote this disproved claim. He thus quotes Ben Gurion to support his allegation that the Israeli leader "attach[ed] more importance to the establishment of Israel than to the survival of the Jews," collaborating with the Nazis to achieve this goal. The statement, as quoted by Ignatiev (via Brenner who, in turn, cites Yoav Gelber) is:

If I knew that it would be possible to save all the children in Germany by bringing them over to England, and only half by transporting to Eretz Yisrael [the Land of Israel], then I would opt for the second alternative. For we must weigh not only the life of these children, but also the history of the People of Israel.

By cherry-picking a single comment, removing it from its context, and ignoring other comments made by Ben Gurion that directly contradict this interpretation, the author distorts history.

The Ben Gurion quote is taken from comments he made to Mapai's central committee on December 7, 1938. This followed Britain's decision to deny entrance into Palestine of 10,000 German Jewish orphans in the wake of Kristallnacht, instead offering them asylum within Great Britain. It was almost a year before the Nazis launched World War II and several years before the Final Solution (to annihilate the Jews) was methodically implemented. While Ben Gurion believed that Germany's anti-Jewish policies would necessitate creating a safe haven for numerous Jewish refugees that no other country was willing to accept, he had no way of predicting the enormity of what was to follow.

The British offer to accept several thousand children appeared to be a gesture of conscience allowing Britain to close the doors of Palestine — not only to those German orphans, but to future refugees as well. Ben Gurion had recently witnessed the results of the international Evian conference, which had been convened in July 1938 to address the growing Jewish refugee problem, and knew that other countries were also unwilling to accept hundreds of thousands of Jewish refugees. He believed that only a Jewish homeland would be able to properly absorb these Jews. Thus Ben Gurion stated that "our concern is not only the personal interest of these children, but the historic interest of the Jewish people" (translation from the stenographic records by Shabtai Teveth, Ben Gurion and the Holocaust, Harcourt Brace & Co. 1996, p. 47).

According to the records of the Mapai meeting, Yitzchak Ben Zvi immediately clarified Ben Gurion's brusque remark, explaining "ten thousand children are a small part of Germany's [Jewish] children…They [the British] don't intend to save Germany's Jews, and certainly not all of them. The moment the Jewish State Plan [the Peel plan] was shelved, the possibility of complete rescue of Germany's Jews was shelved with it." (ibid. p. 48)

There is ample evidence — ignored by Ignatiev — that Ben Gurion viewed the rescue of Jews as paramount. As early as 1936, Ben Gurion told Palestine's high commissioner, Sir Arthur Wauchope, that "had there been the possiblity of bringing Poland's Jews to the United States or Argentina, we would have done so regardless of our Zionist beliefs. But the world was closed to us. And had there also not been room for us in Palestine, our people would have had only one way out: to commit suicide" (Ben Gurion, Memoirs, p.3:105, cited in Shabtai Teveth, Ben Gurion and the Holocaust, pp xlix, 110). And in November 1941, Ben Gurion argued that "the supremely important thing now is salvage, and nation-building is incidental" (Teveth, ibid. p.xlviii).

The Jewish people have a historical, legal, religious, moral, and self-defense right to live in the Jewish national homeland. Israel should not be embarrassed to explain those rights to all who would listen, starting with Israelis across the entire political spectrum, and from there to the entire Jewish people in the world.A good starting point in doing this would be for the Netanyahu government to accept, endorse fully, explain and teach the Levy Report to all who would listen. It is not necessary to leave the UN to get a wider audience. A podium at the UN can be used to expand the audience. Just be able to say "no" to international efforts to treat Israel the way Czechoslovakia was treated at Munich. With internal unity in Israel, there is a better capacity for resistance. There is no excuse for not teaching Israelis their national rights.

  • Scorpio

Great article, Mr. Shuster. Yes, indeed, the time has come for Israel to stop "playing along" with the UN and allowing herself to be beaten up by all those 138 (more?) nations who supported "Palestinian" application for "nationhood." The time has come to stop this painful charade and send those evil-doers and pretenders back home to their flee-infested./ The time has come to stop pretending that the lie is the truth, so as not to hurt the villains' feelings.
Let them be gone so that Israel can regain dignity and live on its own real reputation of accomplishment and true glory.

Is it that the Israeli Government knows that the final battle will be cataclysmic and the death
tolls overwhelming and to high a price even for peace, I wonder. The advance of evil against
Jerusalem and all of Israel will draw all supporters of Israel into the fire and the outcome
is for Jerusalem to be the Eternal City of God and His People Israel who will last forever.
The expansion of Israel's borders will be Biblical……………….William

The only way Israel can get out of this sadomastic nightmare is by quit worrying about world opinion and start going back to the old ways of fighting wars. Complete and total war against the muslim aggressor with Carthage as a goal, and Shermans March in action. Until then, give the effing muslims an inch, and they will take your life.

Dismantling the UN is a reasonably good idea, but it will not happen unless the US administration decides to cancel its own membership and expel the Organization from its sovereign territory. Israel would be ill-advised to set the precedent, as it is still a very small country, with much at stake in the less-political UN institutions such as the FAO, WHO, and so on. Instead, an international body consisting exclusively of proven democracies and human rights-minded developing countries (yes, they exist.) could be founded, e.g. based on the OECD, with the goal of pooling aid monies and allocating them to worthy, accountable and future-oriented goals. The tyranny and corruption-ridden UN would then be allowed to fade into irrelevance. Is this anything realistic to hope for with the current US administration?

  • geula

The only way to know why Europeans have remained so anti-semitic will be when the West is no longer dependent on Arab oil or it runs out. And that's a long time from now. Will then Europe feel so obsessed with continuing to beat the Jew?

Even without the oil influence, Arabs are simply such a huge demographic group. Occam's razor would indicate that the likeliest explanation is the fear of the Arabs themselves, the barbaric hordes, combined with the West desire for cultural extinction. It is here that I would locate the "masochist" party.

The result is political correctness. Another factor is the millenial memory – by now perhaps genetic – of abusing the Jew . But the root cause remains the Arab racist hatred itself. This is a hatred based on the Quran, in identityat the most primitive level, and Islam's penchant for usurpation, religious , cultural and political. The very many African nations at the UN vote as a pro-Arab block.

Arabs/Muslims will not stop hating Jews and Israel. The only thing one can realistically wish is that the civilized world comes to a point of true independence , where the Arabs don't matter anymore. As they should not.

I have been reading this web site for years and I have noticed the same pattern with many American conservative Jews in relation to world politics. It's great that many American Jews and former leftists like David Horowitz and others have turned against the destructive liberalism of the last 40 years or so. They are to be commended for repudiating leftism and fighting the right side of the culture wars in the USA. They have all broken away from the old Jewish leftism that used to be so prevalent and still is in Hollywood and the media.
Yet on the Israel issue you all remain arch-Zionists in spite of the horrendous crimes committed in the name of the Jewish state. I am not anti-Semitic. But not a peep of protest here against the sins of Zion. It's Zionism that is creating anti-Semitism in the world. As time goes on fewer and fewer Jews associate with Zionism and are amalgamating more and more here in America, the great "melting pot." More and more they are marrying outside of their race and living their lives as assimilated Americans and not as a separate elite people. More and more are becoming Christians. This trend is inexorable. To all Jews, embrace your home country, which has given you more freedom and prosperity than you have ever known and reject Zionism!

  • dionissismitropoulos

    Alice

"Yet on the Israel issue you all remain arch-Zionists in spite of the horrendous crimes committed in the name of the Jewish state."

You are probably referring to the purported expelling of around 600 thousand Palestinians in 1948, after Israel declared her independence and five Arab armies invaded her..

A good deal of historians argue that the majority of the Palestinians left willingly, following the orders of the five invading Arab armies that were attempting to conduct genocide against the Jews.

These Palestinians expected to return in a few weeks time, after their brothers have exterminated the Jewish presence.

If that was the case, then no horrendous crimes have been committed in the name of the Jewish state.

Are you a historian? Maybe you could disprove this claim?

If you are not a historian, why are you so assertive about Jewish crimes? I wouldn't want to think that you have a predilection for blood libels against Jews.

I just hope you are not merely engaging in that vicious form of Christian anti-Semitism that maddened the Europeans up to the point of extinguishing their Jewish populations – and ending up with a Muslim Eurabia, that's poetic justice, as a Jewish friend of mine has noted.

"But not a peep of protest here against the sins of Zion."

The amount of self-criticism of the Israelis and the Jews in general is unbelievable.

Even if it were not, they would definitely be excused, considering that such self-criticism is detrimental at times when the very existence of Israel is at stake – should i remind you that Iran is going for the bomb?

"It's Zionism that is creating anti-Semitism in the world."

Anti-Semitism was present since ancient history, long before any Zionist movement was formed.

"More and more they are marrying outside of their race and living their lives as assimilated Americans and not as a separate elite people"

    Ah, the "chosen people" libel.

Jews understand this concept as an extra responsibility on them, i.e. a responsibility to behave so as to be moral examples.

They do not see it as a reason for showing-off.

But you, surely, see it as a reason to be jealous of them.

"To all Jews, embrace your home country, which has given you more freedom and prosperity than you have ever known and reject Zionism!"

But the Jews are doing both:

Embracing America and supporting the existence of Israel.

These two are not mutually exclusive.

Why don't you recognize Israel's right to exist?

    " I am not anti-Semitic."

I'd love to believe you, but, after all the above anti-Semitic tropes that you reproduced, i find it hard to believe it.

If the way you interpret you religiosity leads you to such Jew-hating, i would suggest you become an atheist, like myself.

Jealousy (and the attendant wish to see the envied one as morally inferior) is a terrible emotion.
