Fast and Furious Is Not a D.C. Law Firm

Pages: 1 2

The only explanation for Fast and Furious is that it was a program to prop up a losing gun control argument. The Waco and Ruby Ridge raids were monstrous, but they at least made sense as simple screw-ups: (1) ATF’s budget was about to be cut and it needed some showy raids; and (2) law enforcement officials detest private gun ownership on principle.

There is no conceivable law enforcement objective to giving Mexican drug dealers thousands of untrackable guns. It’s not even fun for the agents, like an armed raid on a private home. If there’s some other explanation, Holder isn’t telling.

Republicans refuse to state this clearly because they can’t prove it. Instead, they just keep chattering about the documents that haven’t been turned over and subpoenas that haven’t been answered.

Did Democrats wait for a smoking gun to accuse Karl Rove of treason for revealing Valerie Plame’s identity as a CIA agent? It turned out Rove didn’t reveal it, and it wouldn’t have been a crime if he had.

Did they wait for proof to accuse Sen. John McCain of committing adultery? They had none, and yet that story ran on the front page of The New York Times.

Did they have any evidence before accusing the entire Republican House leadership of complicity in Mark Foley’s creepy emails to young male interns? See if you can guess. Take all the time you need. Feel free to call one of your “lifelines” if necessary.

Liberals just make wild-eyed accusations and demand Republicans prove themselves innocent. (Say, whatever happened to Karl Rove’s trial for treason for outing Valerie Plame? Can somebody call Lawrence O’Donnell and check on that?)

If conservatives were our only source of information about 9/11, no one would care about that, either. Somehow they’d make it about Osama bin Laden not answering a subpoena.

This isn’t just another government program gone bad — a $300 ashtray, stimulus money fraud, Solyndra or Van Jones.

It isn’t just a story about some government official refusing to testify.

It isn’t even a story about an American dying as a result of a government program, as outrageous as that is. Yes, Brian Terry died at the hands of a Mexican using a Holder-provided American gun. Pat Tillman died. Ron Brown died. People sometimes die as a result of government screw-ups. Fast and Furious is worse.

Innocent people dying was the objective of Fast and Furious, not collateral damage.

It would be as if the Bush administration had implemented a covert operation to dump a dangerous abortifacient in Planned Parenthood clinics, resulting in hundreds of women dying — just to give pro-lifers an argument about how dangerous abortion clinics are.

Not to forget liberal Republicans like Schwarzenegger who join conservatives in order to undermine them.

"Precisely because this is such a jaw-dropping accusation — criminality at the highest level of government to score a political point — Republicans refuse to make it." – Ann Coulter

If Republicans continue to pull their punches as McCain did in 2008, Obama will coast to victory come November.
    Nice guys finish last.

RINOs don't fight with family members!

This is why I have not donated to the RNC. Not until they start playing hardball and get with the program. NO MORE MR. NICE GUY, D@MN IT.

TELL IT LIK E IT IS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(oh, just to give you republican congress-people a visual example, you need to be like Jan Brewer (sadly has more cojones than most rep. men), and Scott Walker (ditto))

    • Sprinklerman

As well as me. I receive a lot of "junk" mail from the RNC. I return it with their pre-post paid envelope with the following: "Until you guys start acting like conservatives, you will receive no money from me."

What worries me is that this Administration can and will sign the Small Arms Treaty with the UN in an attempt to take away our 2nd Amendment rights. Once that has been signed, any Senate (think years from now when we get another super majority of liberal Senators) can provide their consent and the Treaty becomes law. Right now the UN is working on this Treaty to finalize it, and guess what country has representation on the treaty committee? Iran.

Call your Senators right now and demand that if they don't come out in defense of our Second Amendment rights that you will do everything you can to replace them when they run for re-election.

I don't own a gun, but I don't want only government agents to own guns. I also don't want the drug dealers on my city streets near my family home to know i don't own a gun. As long as it is legal for American citizens to own guns I am safer. Slowly but surely I am growing righter. There was a time I was ok with illegal immigrants from Mexico moving into my neighborhood because I am a homeschooler and white (I'm Swedish-American…very white). Homeschoolers have been accused of not wanting to send their kids ot public schools because of racism, so raising my kids with the kids of illegals seemed to counter that. So it turns out that when I mentioned that there were heroin dealers in front of where some Latinos lived down the street from me, a city councilmember held a press conference in front of my property and agreed that he could see through to my real message that the drug dealers were Latinos and that was racist and so my whole family was racist and should be punished. That was repeated in Spanish to the drug dealers. Who is my family's real enemy…the drug dealers or the city council? Santa Cruz CA city councilmember John Laird.

Jane – Don't compound your first mistake by making a second. Right wing sites like this are of limited value, and in many cases promote a NeoConGelical agenda that has little to do with liberty. On this specific article, see my comment below, decimating Coulter's analysis/view with facts. Coulter is smart and pretty, but ulitmately, vicious lowlife who checked out of being part of polite company back when she called John Edwards a "faggot with a fancy haircut" at CPAC 4 years ago.

Go check out say Reason.com or some reasonable libertarians sites and thinkers. You'll run into some anarchists, just ignore them, they aren't libertarians anyway. You'll find that your liberal tendencies to respect all people's rights (not just those of NeoConGelicals) will be much more in alignment with Libertarianism. Unless you want a party that has a Christian litmus test for political candidates, then you'll be right at home with the Right. For the first election cycle ever, Republican POTUS candidates had to actually make clear their "testament for Jesus" in living rooms across Iowa – hence the parade of clowns in our primary. The right is about much more than hating Obama and restoring our "Christian Nation" – I hope you look farther than Front Page for alternatives.

Glad to hear you're moving to the right. Has it occurred to you just how Left you were yet? I hate hearing about things like that happening to people, but the fact is that you set yourself up for it with that liberal thought process.

What you just described is a typical case of what we call "White Guilt". It is a totally foundation-less construct that is highly self destructive (as you have learned for yourself). This is EXACTLY why Obama is sitting in the White House right now. How's THAT for self destructive?

Welcome to the real world…where the ones crying "racism" are the actual racists, and would like nothing better than to wipe "whitey" off the face of the Earth. And it's not a new development either. You're just now seeing what has been in front of you all your life. Pretty humbling experience, isn't it?

And this is why nobody should pay attention to a thing Coulter has to say. The facts, as laid out in the Fortune magazine story, available online for anyone interested, are completely at odds with Coulter's narrative. If you actually care about what happened here, read that article and you will see that this line of reasoning, and in fact the entire Fast and Furious debacle bears little resemblance to what you are hearing from babbling right-winger sound bite peddlers (and I'm not leftist).

This article was recommended to my by my brother, who has a senior role in DHS after a lifetime in intelligence and law enforcement in the military, police, and secret service. It was recommended to him by an senior ATF SAC, and my brother claims that most agents he knows at ATF (he deals with many in the course of his work), and throughout the 85 other federal law enforcement agencies think this is political BS. And my bro depises Obama and holder. Here are just a few facts you should be aware of.

    1. Agent Terry was not killed by a Fast and Furious gun. Period. Ballistics conclusively proved this, so the entire right wing narrative exploits the death of a brave agent in the line of duty that had absolutely nothing to do with Fast and Furious. Fyi, this kind of thing disgusts many federal agents.

    2. 2000 guns a day move from Arizona across the Mexican border. It's legal to buy and sell guns in qty in AZ for any citizen which makes it very hard to build solid cases. This is just a fact so it's a very hard law enforcement enterprise from the outset.

    3. The govt actually only bought and sold a very small number of guns. The vast majority of guns that were "walked" were really LEGAL purchases that they observed and tracked of guns from local gunstores, and they then would attempt to track them to the best of their ability. The 7 agent team running Fast and Furious (named due to the car racing some of the cartel suspects engaged in) were running 11 other cases at the same time. This was not a huge operation.

    4. The U.S. atty was the choke point on these prosecutions, and it turns out a couple of the main cases ATF wanted to pursue were actually against FBI paid informants, making the investigation/case much more complex. This is an issue, but not evidence of scandal. It did result in prosecutions and arrests not happening. I'd like to know more about how all this got so messed up, but it in no way suggests any kind of nefarious acts.

It's pretty clear that Holder had no involvement in any of this, and according to a real federal agent, he never would be involved in any way in this kind of investigation. Federal agents "walk" contraband every day, including counterfeit money, drugs and guns – it's not thing new.

Last point. If your view isn't affected by these facts, you are hysterical and are probably suffering from Obama derangement syndrome. Just sayin…

    • Maxie

"I'd like to know more about how all this got so messed up, but it in no way suggests any kind of nefarious acts"

Really? EVERYONE would like to know more about all this. That's why the Issa committee is asking questions. Why the Holder stonewalling? One suspects 'nefarious acts' by a Justice Dep't. that has been totally politicized by Obama and his stooge Holder. Even a Lefty like you should be able to comprehend it all.

      • Glennd1

Moron. Congressional hearings are for a very high level of misconduct. ATF and other agencies already have looked into this, including the IG and others. I'm no lefty either, you idiot. Holder is refusing, in the main, to provide any files from ongoing investigations – standard practice, go talk to any federal agent or prosecutor and you'll find that's true. You see, I actually draw my conclusions based on reality here – it helps to have a brother who's an expert in these kinds of things. He's no lefty either, but hey, keep dismissing people like me as leftists because you can't deal with the truth. So sad.

More to the point. Did you read the Fortune article? If so, how can you take anything Issa or Limbaugh or Hannity take seriously about this? How can you stomach them prancing the Terry family around when his death had nothing to do with Fast and Furious? If not, how can you be so intentionally ignorant? Do facts not matter to you?

    • http://www.themadjewess.wordpress.com MAD JEWESS

This is non truth. Holder knew all about Project Gun runner in 2009 .

'We learned that despite Barack Hussein Obama and Eric Holder repeatedly denying knowledge of Project Gunrunner over the years, Obama approved and signed the stimulus funding for its operations back in 2009. And during that same year, Obama’s Attorney General Eric Holder bragged about Project Gunrunner at the arms trafficking conference in Cuernavaca, Mexico – as documented (2009 Screen Capture) of the Department of Justice website.'
      http://politicalvelcraft.org/2011/10/09/breaking-

      • Glennd1

You claim a nexus to Obama via stimulus funding? That is absurd. And GunRunner wasn't Fast and Furious – are you daft? And just so you know, he would never have any operational involvement or even act in a supervisory capacity of a small operation like this. This was pushed internally by folks at ATF, Holder had nothing to do with it. Yes, docs flow through DOJ in DC for approval and there is an admin function of the AG that might touch this somehow, incidentally, but to assert that Holder was driving this or really, any way involved or covering up is just not factual. Read the Fortune article and tell me if you still think this part of an attempt to create a climate for more gun control. That view has no validity whatsoever, honey – according to federal agents who know what they are talking about. So sad, the lot of you…

        • http://www.themadjewess.wordpress.com MAD JEWESS

You probably also think it a brilliant idea that Holder and Obama are suing AZ as well. I live here. I know what is going on–you dont.

I own a gun and feel safer because of it. A creep was taking things off my porch until I shouted I had a gun and wasn't afraid to use it and he hightailed it out of there.

A liberal woman saw the gun and feigned fear as if the gun was inexplicalbly going to discharge and kill her. It was ridiculous to behold.

Yes, just like they always do: The Vince Foster "suicide", the Clinton impeachment cop-out, Waco, Filegate, Chinagate, etc., etc. Oh, if we only had a 'real' opposition party!

When you consider the Fast and Furious brouhaha and what the project involved, don't you find it humorous that we still, 40 years after the fact, get all highstrung about the money laundering and the "dirty tricks" of the Watergate scandal, but give a breezy pass to a Presidentially-allowed distributing of assault rifles to the most murderous killers in the world, and ignore the murders that followed from doing that?

The answer to Ms Coulter's question about why Repubes won't call the Fast and Furious Gun Running Gun Dump that it is because Republicans are cowed mentally conformed cowards by nature without the stomach or spine for the type of fight that brainwashed dangerous delusional Democrats live for and love.
When was the last time you even heard a Republican call for getting rid of the completely parasitic Dept of Education? Lots a money spent on NOTHING.
Or even rolling back the power of the EPA to prevent Americans from tapping our energy supplies from coast to coast so we don't have to push drilling off to the deeper more dangerous off shore platforms??
"Respectable" republican lap dogs know their place.

Imagine dumping hundreds or thousands of assault grade weapons on Mexican drug lords KNOWING THEY DID NOT HAVE THE MEANS in place ahead of time to track weapons the drug lords ultimately used against US agents.
Explain this to Dems and they look at you with a straight face and like mind-numbed robots blurt out "this raises 2nd Amendment issues…"
Republicans are outfoxed cowards but Democrats are serial liars and frauds.

    • Amused

Just more partoisan bullsheeeet , no one will challenge the irresponsible gun sales going on in Arizona , because they're ALL afraid of the gun lobby and NRA . The Mexican Army's wharehouse are literally filled with weapons from the US , how many do you think ATF is responsible for ? Yea the operation was a bust , but idf a US agent hadn't been killed the republicans would not be saying a bloody thing , screw the 60,000 or so Mexicans killed .This has been going on for decades , and it is the fault of IDIOTS in American border towns who think the 2 nd Amendment is their sacred right to behave like the irresponsible idiots that they are. And their response ? It's not their problem that the borders are not properly secured -oh really ? Nothing of any meaningfull signifigance has been done about the borders going back through Clinton to Reagan , and you come off just like those jerks and blame who ? The Democrats ? And ifg you think that doing something about the problem of arms crossinbg the border DOES NOT raise 2nd Amendment issue , then you're pretty darn DUMB > try that out on the gun dealers .

  • Amused

What a B.S. article , written for the UNINFORMED by the UNINFORMED .
The Republicans are keeping their mouths shut because in Arizona , straw sales of weapons is common place and EASY . If I were to walk in to a gun show or store and by 20 AK-47's and as soon as I walk out guns in arms ,I sell them to another , that would be perfectly legal in Arizona . In the operation called fast and furious , guns had to walk in order to be tracked because no arrest can be made in Arizona with out probable cause , and in Arizona walking out of a store or gun show with 20 AK's is NOT probable cause , NOR IS then selling them to someone else . Criminal intent must be proven . And Republicans are not going to ruffle the feathers of the gun lobby , the NRA , or the irresponsible people who sell them . Two of the guns "that walked " were found to be used in the killing of a US Border Guard , however 10's of thousands have already walked without an ATF operation tpo facilitate it , and 60,000 Mexicans have been killed .
This whole thing is nothing but political B.S.

  • mlcblog

    Abortifacient? Give me a break.

  • amused

Most of "the critics "of fast and furious , are ignorant of both the facts and the reality of how weapons from the US wind up in the hands of the Mexican cartels ..Mexicans even know better . Mexican authorities have wharehouses literally filled with confiscated weapons bought in the US which have made their way to Mexico , even 50 caliber snoper rifles . For all the handwringing and whining about Holder , the weapons involved in fast and furious account for an infitesmally small percentage .ANYONE who's been paying attention to the problem over the past two decades know this .But as usual Republican just find in Holder another proxy to attack Obama . Another example of the sickening partisam politics existing in te Republican Party. And the sycophants and political parrots just keep regurgitating their rhetoric , ignoring facts .

  • Glennd1

Omigod, do you realize how deluded you are? I'm not doing "damage control" – I'm giving you the opinion of a recognized expert in law enforcement – my brother. I thought you folks would like to know that you are being spun. Did you even read the Fortune article? Sigh… Why am I bothering?

  • Glennd1

First of all, your screen name seems accurate – you come off as a mad-woman. Of course Holder is concerned with stopping arms trafficking to the cartels and would speak of it in a speech to Mexico. ATF was amping up the approach and he was probably aware of that. What does that prove? That he had operational involvement or gave orders to give guns away so more violence would result so he could then press for gun control, which is what the ever-vicious Coulter maintains? Her point is ludicrous and nothing you've cited supports her accusation, you do understand that, yes?

  • Glennd1

The immigration issue has nothing to do with this, and I think what they are doing to AZ is horrific. My immigration plan? 10,000 buses. Arrest 'em, fill the buses up, drop 'em off in mexico and build the rest of the fence. I don't care about their sob stories – it's all their fault for coming here in the first place. I'm not a liberal and neither is my brother. We aren't Tea Partiers either though, he's a small c conservative and I'm a libertarian, but not a Ron Paul fan, I'm more a follower if the ideas of Hayek or Milton Friedman, who really base their values/views on the same ideas that Madison and Jefferson held. I think Ron Paul is a crypto-racist, crank, isolationist who makes friends with far too many racists, conspiracy theorists and anarchists for anyone sane person to take him seriously

That said, did you read the Fortune article? It should really open your eyes on this. I'm only trying to understand this based on the facts http://features.blogs.fortune.cnn.com/2012/06/27/
Let me ask you this, seriously, without screaming at each other. If you had a brother who was a federal agent, and a very senior one, with globally recognized expertise and 30 years experience in such matters, who hates Holder and Obama, but he came to you and pointed you to this article and made the points I made here, would you be affected by it? I was. I also have watched Holder be very difficult in those hearings, but my brother's take is that much of that documentation is actually off limits due to ongoing cases, and that Holder would have no involvement in the operation.

I despise Holder and Obama – but not for this. Tell me truthfully, if you read the article, don't you feel a little like Hannity-Limbaugh-Coulter are overplaying this big time and are also wrong in their accusations?
