The Democrats’ Racist Gun Control History

Pages: 1 2

Liberals have leapt on the shooting death of Trayvon Martin in Florida to push for the repeal of “stand your ground” laws and to demand tighter gun control. (MSNBC’S Karen Finney blamed “the same people who stymied gun regulation at every point.”) This would be like demanding more funding for the General Services Administration after seeing how its employees blew taxpayer money on a party weekend in Las Vegas. We don’t know the facts yet, but let’s assume the conclusion MSNBC is leaping to is accurate: George Zimmerman stalked a small black child and murdered him in cold blood, just because he was black. If that were true, every black person in America should get a gun and join the National Rifle Association, America’s oldest and most august civil rights organization.

Apparently this has occurred to no one because our excellent public education system ensures that no American under the age of 60 has the slightest notion of this country’s history.

Gun control laws were originally promulgated by Democrats to keep guns out of the hands of blacks. This allowed the Democratic policy of slavery to proceed with fewer bumps and, after the Civil War, allowed the Democratic Ku Klux Klan to menace and murder black Americans with little resistance.

(Contrary to what illiterates believe, the KKK was an outgrowth of the Democratic Party, with overlapping membership rolls. The Klan was to the Democrats what the American Civil Liberties Union is today: Not every Democrat is an ACLU’er, but every ACLU’er is a Democrat. Same with the Klan.)

In 1640, the very first gun control law ever enacted on these shores was passed in Virginia. It provided that blacks — even freemen — could not own guns.

Interesting read Ms Coulter, I'd even say compulsory read for Blacks who mindlessly vote the unDemocratic party whose ruinous condescending policies have crippled Black America.

Having said that, I disagree with the notion that the solution to America's high rate of gun violence is more guns.
In several other developed nations where guns are not freely available, gun violence is low as even criminals find it difficult to obtain firearms. Consequently, police officers in some of these countries are often not armed yet they successfully maintain law & order.
America is thus trapped in a vicious cycle of more circulating guns begetting even more gun violence, and citizens demanding for even more guns.

As for the late Martin Luther King applying for gun permit, what happened to the reverend's faith in Jesus – that all-powerful miracle worker who raised people from dead and assured his followers they could do much more with faith as little as mustard seed?

    • Zundfolge

The flaw in your thinking is that it doesn't take reality into account.

The numbers of firearms in the hands of private citizens has been climbing over the last few decades, along with the numbers of citizens licensed to carry concealed handguns (and the states allowing such licensing).

Crime rates (particularly violent crime rates) have been on a steady decline over the same period of time.

John R Lott is correct; More Guns, Less Crime.

    • DMW

"Shooting's O.K. — as long as the right people get shot." (Harry Callahan in 'Magnum Force'). And that's the rub: deciding who the "right people" are. For thousands of years, the same has also applied to rocks, knives, spears, arrows, tomahawks, etc. etc. etc.. I also go by another maxim: When seconds count, the police are just minutes away.

      • Jay

Nerd correction: I think the quote is "There's nothing wrong with shootin' people- as long as the right people get shot." and I think it's from HANG 'EM HIGH not a 'Dirty Harry' movie, but I could be wrong. Could be there's a similar line in both movies…

    • Rifleman

      Thumbs up, though I disagree.

We have a saying down here, “Trust The Lord, and keep your powder dry.” It goes along with “The Lord helps those that help themselves,” and “Praise The Lord, and pass the ammo.” Jesus didn’t tell his disciples to buy a sword to pick their teeth, it was to protect themselves from outlaws as they spread the word through a dangerous world. Unlike Jesus, we can’t restore life to the dead so we must protect the innocent and our own lives and property from evil. Evil should fear to tread among the good, not the other way around.

The UK had a much lower violent crime rate across the board, and the reason was cultural. That’s why crimes committed with firearm were lowest before the UK instituted strict gun laws, and have increased since. I haven’t paid much attention to UK crime stats since it came out that they do things like count 10 burglaries committed by the same perp as 1 burglary.

    • Reason_For_Life

Gun violence is the only violence in Europe that is lower than the US. Home invasion robbery has become the national sport of England. Murder rates are on the rise, assaults are far higher than in the US. Canada, too, has higher violent crime rates than the US.

The US has become a consistently less violent country over the last fifty years. Whether that's primarily due to more concealed carry permits or some other factors isn't important. What's important is that the predicted increase in violence when gun control laws were relaxed has not occurred. People with legally owned guns do not engage in the violent free for all that was forecast.

    • NAHALKIDES

Remember that while in Europe gun violence may be lower, the overall rate of most violent crimes (except murder) is much higher – the combined result of a disarmed citizenry and lenient sentencing.

    • HoR_Emperor

Your statements about "gun violence" are fact-free mythology.

    • RonCarnine

Dear Bamaguje, Violence is a problem the world over. I was a police officer most of my adult life and I promise you the untold story is this, take gang violence using guns out of the equation and you will witness a dramatic downturn in gun violence. I was the commander of the gang unit in the small city that I worked in and w/o the gangs our gun violence dropped very low. I had one gang member who I took four different guns away from and he never legally purchased one of them. (He's now in prison for a cocaine conviction).
Now I'd like to address your other statement. I also have a degree in theology. Jesus never promised that Christians wouldn't be harmed, mistreated and victimized. Nor did he teach that Christians didn't have the right to defend themselves (turn the other cheek doesn't refer to never defending oneself rather it refers to not reacting to direct insults from others) In fact, as a husband I am told to love my wife like I love myself and to defend her from harm, even at the cost of my own life. If a bad guy breaks into my house with the intent to rape and harm my wife I'm not going to read my Bible to him, I'm going to shoot him. To stand stoically by why my wife and two daughters and five grandchildren are victimized isn't loving. It won't happen in my house.

<<Having said that, I disagree with the notion that the solution to America's high rate of gun violence is more guns.>>

Then you would be incorrect. Read "More Guns Less Crime" by Lott. The more lwaw abiding Americans who are allowed to exercise their 2nd Amendment Rights the less crime we have. The answer to the problem is FREEDOM – in teh 2nd Amendment.

<<In several other developed nations where guns are not freely available, gun violence is low as even criminals find it difficult to obtain firearms. >>

GUN violence is lower – but not CRIME rates over all.

Hogwash…even though there are no guns in other countries, crime rates are just as high, and, criminals are usually armed in those countries as well, with a gun or some other weapon…also most other countries don't enjoy the amount of rights and freedoms allowed in the USA. Also, the police in England were hard pressed to keep the riots under control not too long ago, if you will recall.

    • Michael McPherson

Amen to that. Wake up black America.

    • Captain Bob

"Gun" voilence is not the the problem for good citizens, it's ANY kind of violence. Makes no difference to a victim if they are killed with a gun or a knife or a baseball bat; they are still dead. The difference here in the U.S. is that most good citizens are allowed to protect themselves with guns and a gun is the "great equalizer" , putting an 85 year old grandmother with a gun on an equal footing with a 25 year old criminal. Guns (in the right hands) SAVE lives.

Everybody says there is this RACE problem. Everybody says this RACE problem will be solved when the third world pours into EVERY White country and ONLY into White countries.
The Netherlands and Belgium are just as crowded as Japan or Taiwan, but nobody says Japan or Taiwan will solve this RACE problem by bringing in millions of third worlders and quote assimilating unquote with them.
Everybody says the final solution to this RACE problem is for EVERY White country and ONLY White countries to “assimilate,” i.e., intermarry, with all those non-Whites.
What if I said there was this RACE problem and this RACE problem would be solved only if hundreds of millions of non-blacks were brought into EVERY black country and ONLY into black countries?
How long would it take anyone to realize I’m not talking about a RACE problem. I am talking about the final solution to the BLACK problem?
And how long would it take any sane black man to notice this and what kind of psycho black man wouldn’t object to this?
But if I tell that obvious truth about the ongoing program of genocide against my race, the White race, Liberals and respectable conservatives agree that I am a naziwhowantstokillsixmillionjews.
They say they are anti-racist. What they are is anti-White.
    Anti-racist is a code word for anti-White.

I suggest people turn their eyes towards my poor country of Australia, to see exactly where dicatorial gun control leads, and its happened in less than 1 generation (25 years).

Gun crime is increasing, but gee wizz, it seems that only the crims have the guns and they are more than happy to use them, endangering the general public, and noone can even protect themselves and the cops have no freaking idea who or where the scum suckers are.

So before you jump on the lets get rid of everyones guns, look to Australia after 15 years to see your dems gun control ideas in action.

    • Questions

Hello, Ann: The KKK always has defined itself primarily by its fundamentalist Protestantism and secrecy, not its nominally Democratic Party ties. What do you think cross-burning rallies were — Democrat policy briefings? The civil rights battle of the 1960s essentially was a Democrat civil war between Northern Democrats (anti-segregation) and Southern Democrats (pro-segregation).

"Democrat" and "liberal," in the context of the South, usually were the very opposite of each other. EVERYONE in the South, pro- or anti-Klan, was a Democrat until the late 60s; the GOP was a Yankee party. (That Abe Lincoln was anything but a lover of blacks is a separate issue). Never underestimate the selective uses of history by Ann Coulter.

      • HoR_Emperor

Your sneer against Lincoln is historically illiterate nonsense.

If "Democrat" and "liberal" were the opposite of each other, why did southern Democrats vote happily for FDR and his progressivist policies?

    • Fred Dawes

The KKK Started life inside the democrat political system.

      • HoR_Emperor

Yep. It was the terrorist wing of the southern Democrats, designed to disenfranchise blacks and drive out the hated Yankees, thereby restoring Democrats to absolute power.

Wasn't Robert F. Williams a Communist and mentor to Black Panthers founder Huey Newton? If memory serves me correctly when he got in some legal trouble he fled to Communist Cuba where he was welcomed with open arms and even spent some time in Red China. And if I am also remebering correctly, Robert F. Williams was a purponent of gun use by blacks, but I don't ever recall him mentioning they needed to follow gun laws in obtaining their arms.

    Guns are not the problem,

"In a free society, there will always be the criminal use and negligent misuse of various objects resulting in tragic deaths.

"But every time people die in a bus crash, lawmakers do not cry out for a bus ban.

Every time someone falls off a ladder, no one calls for a ladder ban.

"Left-wingers bear a particular animus toward guns because guns are a symbol of self-reliance and independence from government. It has nothing to do with the actual effectiveness (or lack thereof) of gun control." ~

    • What?

Wow your dumb. How often is a bus or ladder used to kill, rob, rape, intimidate, etc. another human. Don’t get me wrong I love my guns but I can’t stand you dumb people crying all the time with the most retarded, illogical post. Guns are a world wide symbol of fear & war. If I point my gun at you it has nothing to do with self reliance or independence from gov. No one on this planet had the chance to pick what skin color they were born with or who they were born of. Race is not the problem. If it was, white people from the beginning of time would never war or kill each other & we know that’s not the case. Evil people do evil things with guns, black or white, asian or Latino etc. I have no problem getting rid of all my guns (save my hunting guns) but I will only get rid of them when no one else has them either. As you can tell I hate stupid evil people.

What a shame, to have chosen the Colt Python, the Cadillac of revolvers, as the subject for the sculpture in the photo at the head of this article.

    • Fred Dawes

I have a old colt it was used in world war one still a great weapon.

      • tagalog

The Colt M1911 was used by U.S. forces in World War I. It turned 100 years old last year. It was adopted by the U.S. armed forces as the standard sidearm in 1911 and remained so until 1985. The M1911A1 is still issued to certain special ops units as a standard firearm, and recently I am informed that the U.S. government has solicited bids for a .45 semiautomatic pistol and intend to buy 23,000 of them. The Colt may just be on its way back.

    • Zundfolge

Its interesting in that it unintentionally shows the REAL thinking behind gun control.

See they like to pretend that its to disarm the criminal class … to make us all safer.

But criminals don't generally use $2500 collector grade revolvers to commit their crimes, those are almost exclusively owned by law abiding collectors, target shooters and sportsmen. The very people LEAST likely to do any harm with them (less even than the police).

Gun control isn't about making us safe or disarming the criminal class, its about disarming the law abiding. Not to make us safe, but to make us dependent (and thus make government more powerful).

  • UCSPanther

The late 20th century gun control movement was a moral panic that got its start in the 60s, but mostly kept on the sidelines until the late '80s when it took off. It reached its peak in the late '90s, when just about every country had its own version of highly restrictive and onerous gun control legislation, but began to stall in the early 2000s. Now, with groups like Violence Policy Center and the Brady Bunch having hemorraged just about all their credibility (Such as the VPC's attempt to create a moral panic over the 500 SW magnum cartridge in 2001, and came out looking like complete idiots) and the removal of several key legislation, such as the Clinton Gun ban, gun control is starting to be gradually sent to the trash heap where it belongs.

In Canada, we are in the process of getting rid of the Long gun registry, where most rifles and shotguns no longer need to be registered, teaching our politicians that we love our shooting irons just as much as the Americans do, and causing wails of dismay amongst the left that Canada is no longer the wimped out country that it was in 1960s.

    • Fred Dawes

As well you should! After all, you Canadians are a frontier-taming people, just as we Americans are; and we both, by and large, come out of the English common law system.

I don't know this for a fact, but I think that during the Middle Ages, where many kingdoms kept their peasantry and other lower classes from acquiring weapons training, the English actually made weapons training a requirement, in particular with the range weapon of its day, the longbow.

      • sheepdog

You're right about the Longbow training requirement. What is interesting is that at the same time, golf was being played to such a popular extent that King James forbade his men to play golf, which took time off from their practicing the longbow!

    Interesting article. But libs lie.

  • tagalog

The point is, however, that gun control's political effect is to disarm the people distrusted by government. That's not the criminals, as a review of the Soviet experience with criminals and dissidents shows. They distrusted the dissidents, not the hoodlums. In America, we know who the government distrusts most, don't we? The gun control types have been after us hunters, target shooters, and Second Amendment fans, as well as blacks and other racial minorities, for a long time.

When oh when are we going to quit worrying about defending ourselves from the charge of racism? When are we going to quit calling the democrats the party of racists? Yes they were racists, but now they offer minorities what they want. A free existence on the backs of whites. We have every right to point out minorities especially blacks are many times more likely to be racist and violently so. I am a proud white racist who doesn't give a rats rear that you call me so. I have a right to defend myself and I don't need to justify it to anyone especially racist like al sharpton and Jesse Jackson.

One thing that is not generally known, is that the gun death statistics include suicides, accidents, and gang violence. In this particular case, martin could have just as easily been killed by a well-placed punch and his head cracking on the cement, or being run down by a car…dead is dead…the implement is secondary…a big missing factor here, is that zimmerman was known to be a volatile over-zealous protector of his neighborhood and that the police had several instances of his going rogue and basically being a vigilante – yet the police didn't think it necessary to make sure he was not around weapons? there should have been some way that they could have checked to see if he had registered firearms and perhaps asked for a hearing to have them removed from him…just saying…

Ann's pretending to be a leftist again. OF COURSE Democrats were the party of the slave South. OF COURSE Democrats attempted to keep guns out of the hands of blacks. Uh…Duh…. • JP Carpenter

While Ann Coulter thinks she's found some point to hammer home to followers of the Democratic Party, she's really put out a lot of good research with a useless spin. Anyone who takes an American History course in college knows that the Democratic Party was pro slavery. That hasn't been the case for decades now. Democrats have turned wholly on their stance regarding social equality starting in the 50's with Truman and more and more so until in the 90's, racism was all but gone forever from the agenda of the Democratic Party. Saying that what they did decades ago shows their goals is as fallible an argument as I've ever heard. Obviously people grow and change over time, which is what this party has done. I don't think all Democratic politicians are saints, but I personally have seen many more examples of Republican citizens, pundits, and politicians being racist.

So to paint the Democrats of today racist based on their past is as valid as to paint all Americans as ingenuous and traitorous because our country was founded by traitors rebelling against their king.

On the issue of Trayvon Martin and gun control- I could personally care less about his situation, and I don't think that "murdering a black man" was the intent. I think race played a role, as it does in all of our lives (ask any modern sociologist), but I'm not going to support the uproar by many that this is a huge racist issue in America. On gun control- I think it's ridiculous that we're suggesting more guns to stop violence. Mutually assured destruction works with nuclear weapons, but according to the FBI, there is no evidence to suggest that it works with small arms. In the places in the world where guns are easiest to obtain, crime is at its highest. I think the 2nd Amendment is outdated, and as written wasn't for self-defense. It was written to facilitate the creation of organized militias that worked collectively to defend an area or people. Not to shoot someone who scares you or won't back down at a traffic light.
