Exploiting The Colorado Theater Massacre

Pages: 1 2

MSNBC used the tragedy to slam the National Rifle Association (NRA), while a blogger at the Daily Kos website blames America in general, contending that real problem “is getting past the mental and emotional resistance of those who continue to believe that we’re the best country in the world, the best culture ever produced by human beings, and the best everything else.” Film-maker Michael Moore echoed that sentiment, contending that “anthropologists and historians will look back on us and simply say we were a violent nation, at home and abroad, but in due time human decency won out and the violence ceased, but not before many, many more died and the world had had its fill of us.”

Several politicians, led by Nanny State NYC Mayor Mike Bloomberg, demanded gun law reforms. “We can talk about it on the talk shows, we can wring our hands and say it’s terrible. You know, ‘I need more guns to protect myself,’” Bloomberg contended. “That strategy doesn’t work.” Former Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell said Friday’s shooting underscores the need for a ban on assault weapons. Yet the Century 16 Movie Theater where Holmes allegedly opened fire does not allow anyone to carry firearms on the premises, including holders of concealed handgun permits. And the Brandy Campaign that has long lobbied for stricter gun control laws, ranks Colorado in the top third of all states in that regard.

Twitter was alive with recklessness. Rush Limbaugh was blamed for the atrocity because he reviewed “The Dark Knight Rises,” the movie playing in the theater at the time, and noted that the name of the lead villain, Bane, was a homynym for Mitt Romney’s Bain Capital, and that it was no accident. CNN‘s Piers Morgan tweeted that “America has got to do something about its gun laws. Now is the time.” A tweet from Slate contends that no one should blame Dark Knight writer/director Chris Nolan for the tragedy “but we have to ask–why there?”

Why anywhere? The essence of senseless tragedies such as this one is just that: utter senselessness. And that is exactly why irresponsible speculation, armchair psychology, and attempts to politically exploit them are so despicable. Yet the nonsense continues, led by the Associated Press, which compiled a list — of more possible parallels between the massacre in Aurora and the Batman comic book character. Perhaps, much like the current bleating for more gun control, such “insight” will lead to calls for more comic book or movie controls as well.

To the Left EVERYTHING is political. Of course they ARE our intellectual and moral superiors and therefore are going to lecture and exploit every event no matter how small or bloody to demonstrate such. Please do NOT expect any sense of decency or respect for the dead or injured to impede this compulsion to demonstrate their elite status .
These Progressives are amoral. Their lives revolve around power and using gov't to steal other people's money so they become wealthy without having to actually earn it ! An armed populace is harder to manage than defenseless sheep !

    • Western Spirit

      good reply.

  • R.J.

Would this have been any less tragic if he had used a home made flame thrower? He clearly had problems that more stringent gun laws were unlikely to mitigate.

Why is it always the statist politicians and their left-wing allies in the media that always use an incident like this a a rubric to disarm the law abiding (sane) citizenry? Is it because, as history has taught us, that a disarmed populace is easier to push around by a totalitarian government? Yes, I believe that's it.

Sorry dingbats, we've studied our history and that BS just does not cut it. We prefer it be hard for you to take this country over…And that you fear us just a little bit. The founders did too, that's why there's a second amendment. Notice it was second. First, you get to criticize you government and worship god as you please (or not for that matter). Second, you get to have the means to fight back against a tyrannical government and keep the rest of your rights.

    • Mach1Duck

It is because, no matter how trivial or critical the event, out elected represenatives have to look like they are doing something. The thing they are doing does not have to be meaningful or even useful; but it gets their name in front of people. Now is that not sad?

  • Cathy

If those that had concealed carry were allowed to have their firearms with them, this mass murderer could have been brought down BEFORE he was able to kill and maim so many people!!! The leftists INSIST that if guns are out of the reach of ordinary law abiding citizens that there will be no more violence!!! How utterly ridiculous….. and naive… It would mean that ONLY the criminals WOULD have guns and there would be NO ONE to protect the average citizen….

    • Papa Bear

"The leftists INSIST that if guns are out of the reach of ordinary law abiding citizens that there will be no more violence!!!" Good post but misdirected. The Leftist don't fear the felons with guns because they prey on us, the Middle Class. The Leftists fear the Middle Class with guns because they know the harder they work to deploy their evil tactics to take over our society, they know the Middle Class will turn on them with their 240 + million guns.

  • Amused

Let the B.S. fly , this tragedy just like every other in this country , is getting exploited by both sides , one way or another . Have fun flinging shiiit at one another .

    • R.J.

Who on our side tried to politicize anything? The left does this EVERY single time an incident like this happens form Oklahoma city to Gabrielle Giffords and they are (at least up til now, thank god) WRONG!

Brian Ross immediately drags the Tea Party into this. No due diligence. No verification. "we found the name James Holmes on an Aurora Tea Party roster". Did you see the thirty or so others in the phone directory, idiot?
Mr. Holmes had to disconnect his phone! I hope he sues the crap out of that network!

The left tries to make political hay out of everything, because, as the creepy Balarina Rham said, never let a crisis go to waste?..

I've been nose to nose with Progressives in the Eco-socialist( read fascist) movement for 30 years.
LYING is central to the Progressive narrative because when the FACTS are in play they can NOT win an election or policy debate. The presumption of their supposed "good intentions" is wearing out as the outcomes of 60 years of the Great Society/ War on Poverty continue to be a disaster for those they "intended to help." As for "saving the planet" from capitalism => AGW HOAX<= it evident they are trying to destroy Free Market economies while enriching themselves at the public's expense. Lying to destroy the political opposition is just one more tool to get and keep power. Alinsky, Stalin, Hitler, Castro, Mao and Obama made it into a effective weapon.

        • R.J.

Right, ad hominem attacks make YOU a typical left-wing drone. Can't win on substance so make the attack personal.

I'm a schmuck, huh? It lacks originality and says a lot more about you than me, but I will wear this overused cliche of an appellation proudly! Along with "Tea bagger", "right wing extremist", "hobbit", "racist", "bigot", "homophobe", and all the rest of the garbage you, the most intolerant people on the planet, spew daily at people who have traditional American values and want there country to return to the spirit (not the letter) of it's founding.

If you do not like our constitution and declaration of independence, leave. There are plenty of nations that forbid personal freedom for you to choose from. The United States of America was not made for people like you. I get it. Now get lost!

          • Amused

yes , you're a schmuck , and that's simply a direct observation . And a real dumb one at that , since I made no statement implying a dislike fot OUR CONSTITUTION , or The Declaration of Independence . Nor have I used any of the terms you listed EXCEPT "teabaggers " a larger group of SCHMUCKS . But I see you are also a dyslexic schmuck sorely lacking in the skill of reading comprehension So save your phony patriotic speech , for my statements simply exposes the exploitation of this tragedy both by Dem. & Rep., which most of you hypocrites here claim to be exclusively in the realm of the left , or better put those YOU RECKON are on the left , and that is anyone who disagrees with your bullshheet, flag-draped, sanctimonious, lock-stepped politics . My statement had nothing whatsoever to do with the Constitution OR Declaration of Independence , so what in the hell are you talking about ? NO , I wont get lost , but why dont you go crawl up your arse and disappear you dunce .

          • amused

…and YEA , you MUST be living in a cave , either that or you've got shiit in your ears .There's literally a multitude of examples of this scattered all over the internet , print media and tv . Or maybe you just need to trade your brain in for a new one eh genius ?

          • R.J.

Sanctimonious? Brother, you are bathing in sanctimony. I'm so glad that someone like you who is so wise and above it all comes here to dispense his "wisdom". I'll bet you shared those same kernels of insight on left-wing threads where the knee-jerk libs want to blame the right or enact more stringent gun controls too, right?

Of course you didn't, because we know who you really are. No one is fooled by your trolling here…

Again, get lost and take your phony- baloney, plastic-banana, good-time- rock-and-roll critiquing with you.

          • R.J.

You've proven my point in spades! Thank you! Keep posting it only exposes you for the liberal garbage that you are. Amused? More like amusing, as in fool, jester, village idiot-take your pick!

          • R.J.

Every time something like this happens the left starts calling for more gun control, pinning it on Limbaugh, Palin, the tea party, etc. Who on the right does that? Don't give me some idiot that no one listen to or follows, obscure bloggers, etc. This was done by an MSM newscast, the mayor of new york. You're mentally disturbed if you cannot see the difference and your denigration of the Patriotic Americans fighting for traditional American values proves you are not anything but a jerk. Crawl up my arse? Pull your head out of it!

          • Amused

LOL….no trick here ….looks like I hit a nerve . You haven't got an original though of your own in that empty head of yours do ya ? Well hypocrites like you hate being exposed ,and the respone is not a-typical – rambling rants ,avoiding the subject , pretending to be the eternal victims …just like your fellow schmucks on the left .Your delusion is that you are somehow better , lol…just as is theirs .And the facts just fly right over your heads , totally ignored for the sake of your partisan politics . PARROTS ALL !
Obscure bloggers ? you mean like Blimpy Limbaugh ? Breitbart.com ? Alex Jones ? Statements BLAMING gun control that no one was in there packing heat to stop this guy ? Statements blaming the victims themselves that no one had a gun to stop this guy ? It's the same B.S. that everyone hears after every tragedy of this nature . Who ya kidding CHUMP ? Yourself ?

  • tgh754cmh

I blame it all on Michael Moore. I have it on good authority that the shooter hated rich, fat, liberal directors.
    Prove me wrong.

More people die from medical mistakes than from gun violence. More people die from drunk drivers than from gun violence. Almost all gun violence in urban areas [with strict gun laws like Chicago, New York, LA] is between drug dealers protecting their "sidewalk stores". The media never tell of or show stories from the millions of people each year who have protected themselves and their families from burglars, home invaders, street robbers, car jackers and other criminal activity because they were armed and either used their weapon or threatened to use it.

  • scum

Of course, no mention in the this article of the organization that within 24 hrs was using the shooting for aggressively political and extremely narrow reasons: A right-wing SUPER PAC using funny money to defeat Obama. I knew FPM would soon have an article like Ahlert's all greased up and ready to slide into your brain.

    • Steve Chavez

Excuse me SCUMBAG, every news source is on this story and it is up to them to wait for the facts. The Ross angle with the Tea Party fit the narrative of the alphabet media and many tried to tie in Limbaugh, Hannity, and "right-wing radio" for this massacre just like they did during the Gifford's shooting.

SO WHAT'S BAD, is that Ross' disinformation IS STILL BEING REPEATED AS FACT BY THOSE WHO DIDN'T HEAR THE RETRACTION. "Did you hear that the guy was in the Tea Party? Maxine Waters was right when she said "Those sons-a-bi*ches."

We all know too that FPM writes articles on Friday to last over the weekend and if they would have waited till Monday, it would have been an old story especially if more "Breaking News" took place. HUFFPO IS ALL OVER THE STORY. ANY COMPLAINTS? They are drooling over there and sure enough, THE TEA PARTY, RIGHT-WINGERS, AND THE NRA ARE STILL BEING BROUGHT UP!

      • scum

Actually, Steve, Ross and ABC issued a retraction, unlike Pollack on Breitbart.com who asserted that Holmes "could be a registered Democrat." Fact is, they're all wrong."

    • Looking4Sanity

Tell the truth…you're on bath salts right now, aren't you? That's the most logical explanation I can think of for that poorly written, rambling, nonsensical excuse of a comment.

      • Amused

Chavez is on more than bath salts , oh wait you're talkin about ALHERT .

        • Looking4Sanity

          • Amused

Still looking for your sanity ? I'm all for guns , I dont fault anyone here on either side , as I said further down this thread ..NO ONE CAN OUTSMARTY CRAZY . You don't know nothing , you ASSSume like many of your fellow sycophants on this thread . In addition your reading comprehension has not improved since your last regurgitated words spilled out on this thread . Scum just recognizes the rampant hypocrisy that resides here , that is in fact easy to predict .
            BTW , I own an AK , a Bushmaster M-4 , a Ruger Redhawk , a Mossberg , an S&W .38 , Remington 30.06 , 2- 9mm's [one for the wife] 2 High Standard .22 's , and a good ole .45 -1911 . Both myself and the wife have C& C 's for over 15 -years , so numbskull which side of the issue do you think I'm on ? You can take the necessarry 24-48 hrs , it will take answer thaty question .

          • Looking4Sanity

Take another bong hit and relax, lefty. I wouldn't want you to soil your diaper on my account.

          • scum

To Sanity and Chavez, and the gang: Just for the record, I don't own a gun, but nor do I push for gun control. Was Brian Ross wrong? Yes! It was lousy reporting, and he should, and did apologize. Was Joel Pollack of Breitbart wrong for calling the shooter 'a registered Democrat'? Yes, but he didn't apologize. Nor has FPM criticized Limbaugh for spewing nonsense about the evil character BANE in Batman, claiming that his name is a liberal conspiracy to smear BAIN. By the way, Sanity, why do you resort to potty talk (bath salts and poopy diapers!! REALLY!!???)? Wow.

          • R.J.

Look, dimwit. This is pro-forma behavior from the left and it has a purpose. This nonsense has been going on since the Oklahoma City bombing. The perpetrators are despicable leftists all with the same agenda. You say you like your second amendment rights, right? Then stop with the moral equivocation. There is none! Period!

The same people are at this every single time something like this and it is always the same story. Not once have they EVER suggested anyone but a conservative, Rush Limbaugh listener could have done these things. They come out immediately with their "investigative" journalism (also called a google search) to reveal that the Aurora Tea Party has a James Holmes on it's roster while ignoring that there are about thirty in the phone directory. That is not "sloppy" reporting. It is a drive-by mudsling. They issued a retraction? This guy had to shut his phone off. Damage done.

I do not understand WHY you cannot see what is going on here but that is your problem, not mine or anyone else here who is on to their game. It is blatantly obvious to all but you two.

  • scum

Of course, Ahlert presents as 'ridiculous' the idea that comic books would be censored, again not recognizing that the anti-Communist hysteria of the 1950s led to a Senate Sub-Comittee under Frederick Wertham to do just that. His SEDUCTION OFTHE INNOCENT called for all kinds of state controls.

  • Steve Chavez

THEY DO THAT ON PURPOSE AND THERE ARE PEOPLE STILL REPEATING THIS PROPAGANDA since they didn't see the retraction. Some of their lies go on for days and weeks and then on the classified section of the NYT, on page 30, on the bottom left corner, IS THE TRACTION THAT NOBODY READ SO THE LIE CONTINUES.

WHEN I HAVE DISCUSSIONS WITH PEOPLE, THEY REPEAT THE LIE and then I say "didn't you hear that yesterday it was a mistake?" THEY STILL DENY IT SO IT LEADS TO AN ARGUMENT. Many of these people also only watch or read ONE AREA OF THE NEWS so by the MSM not even putting out stories that FOX does, they never hear of it SO IT NEVER HAPPENED AND IT MUST A BE RIGHT-WING LIE.

THEN THE LIES ARE REPEATED SO MANY TIMES, AND THEY KNOW THEY ARE LYING, THAT IT BECOMES THE TRUTH.

Sounds like the current Obama campaign and rhetoric!

    • Amused

I can just picture you Steve arguing with your lefty opponent , both operating not on facts but their partisan bullsheeet and memes . Neither one with enough intelligence or effort to do earnest objective inquiry .Please video tape your next hairbrained argument Steve ,load it up to YouTube …lol.. I bet it'll go viral in minutes . Just put a brown paper bag over your head to retain your anonymity.

  • ★FALCON★

I find it interesting that everytime Democrats (UN) are pushing massive gun control a freak breaks loose. It's almost like the mind controlled automatons know when to strike.

  • robertpinkerton

Some friends and I brainstormed that outrage last night, and we came up with a horrifying possibility, syemming from Mr. Holmes academic discipline, neuroscience. Suppose that the tear gas which Mr. Holmes set off, were a mask for something else: Given his academic background, that something else underneath the tear gas, could be a biological agent or a neurotoxin. Likewise, the fact of his surrender suggests the possibility that he is infected with something, and is using his contacts with others (L.E.O.s, jail inmates, court personnel, among others) to infect them. May the Gods grant this speculation prove false.

  • Looking4Sanity

It's the same with every American tragedy. The statist media comes out swinging immediately, throwing bombs at those on the right with no regard for the truth or the facts, and then back pedals knowing full well that their lies are going to stick in the skulls of the mindless left. We then spend the next two or three months arguing over their lies instead of focusing on important issues like getting Obama out of office.

Sorry, MSM…it isn't going to work this time.

    • Maxie

The Statist Media? They're all graduates of the Dan R.ather school of Criminal Journalism.

      • Looking4Sanity

Sadly so, Maxie. It is enough for me that you see it. We just need to help others see it too.

  • Western Spirit

If sane people were allowed to carry guns these nuts would think twice about unloading on the public. Deterrents such as the ability to defend yourself, work, but totalitarians of all stripes want to take away that ability.

    • deprogrammer

I don't agree with your comment about deterrence. I don't think anything would deter some maniac like this. If one place is too heavily fortified he would have gone onto another target until he found the weakest one and then attacked.
Their is no deterrence only response in these situations. I can't recall a case where the shooter made a real effort to escape. Either they surrendered like this nut job or killed themselves. Return fire would have stopped him – if it killed him.
According to the reports I've seen this guy was wearing body armour so handgun fire would have been of limited effectiveness but if that is what you have that is what you use. A terrible situation all around.

      • R.J.

A .45 would have put him on his ass body armor not withstanding. There are no guarantees that someone could have been able to do anything effective against this guy but some return fire might have at least slowed him down a bit. We'll never know. They could give him a belt or some shoe laces now though, maybe he'd save us the expense of a trial…

  • Western Spirit

Taking our guns makes it the better for the big bad wolf to eat us up, or put another way, the better for totalitarians to enslave us if we are defenseless against their agenda's. So because the Left's lies about guns people die because they can't defend themselves.

  • Amused

David. Over this past St. Patrick's Day weekend in Chicago, President Obama's hometown, where his pal Rahm Emanuel is mayor there were 48 shootings deaths. This is a daily occorance in that city with the strictest gun laws in the nation and the story was not mentioned on any of the national liberal news networks. Odd how the liberals could care less about black on black mass murder isn't it?

I'm surprised no one has made the connection between this action of insainity and the countless hateful actions of Islamic jihadists worldwide. By the way, both seem to target random, go about there own business, every day type people. The madness lies deep in what the bible would call a blood lust. Christians in many parts of the middle east asia and africa are constantly under the threat of this kind of madness. Although many actions like this go on daily, it never seems to get the attention of the press. I wonder why???

There should be an investigation into George Stephanopolous because we all know that the acid murderer who killed six people but who claims he killed nine, was named George!
Also it is no coincidence that Brian is the one who murdered his parents with a claw hammer! What a terrible reporter!
Oh, wait! I have to make a retraction, the George I was writing about was John George Haigh.
Woops, I have to make another retraction, the Brian who murdered his parents was Brain Blackwell.

This has the earmarks of another Fast & Furious, Ruby Ridge, Branch Davidian, Murry Bldg Bomb Fiasco. What do they all have in common? wait for it….. Eric Holder. Oh I forgot, Kenneth Trentadue's murder in prison should be included, too. These are all acts by government, Liberals that hate Liberty, Freedom of Speech and Guns, to play games of "GOTCHA". It is likely another STING gone Stupid, with STUPID at the controls. The Congress should step in and take custody of the shooter so the FBI and the CIA don't murder him like they did Lee Harvey Oswald.

So True: Media Bias. Didn't take long for Joel Pollack to post this little ditty: "James Holmes…could be a registered Democrat." Perhaps Holmes was acting out a diabolical strategy to implement gun control. LOL

Truly, gun owners have nothing to worry about: The weak synatax of the 2nd Amendment gives citizens the right to bear arms (of course, the 'well-regulated militia' phrase is always overlooked), and the NRA is one of the most influential lobbies in the whole business of sleazy, big-money D.C. lobbying. You can keep your guns.

    • wsg

Scum- 'well-regulated militia' – I know history isn't a Progressive's strong suit – but in the historical context of the times a militia was an armed citizenry ! The US Constitution and Bill of Rights are a CLEAR constraint on an expansive and oppressive Federal gov't. The rights enumerated are INDIVIDUAL and STATES' RIGHTS.
Clearly ther US Federal gov't has been outside the Constitution for decades !

    • R.J.

Let me get this straight. The government whose PRMARY purpose under the constitution is defense of the nation had to amend the constitution to allow it to arm itself after fighting a bitter war for freedom against the most powerful military of it's time. That is the kind of circular logic you can ONLY get from a liberal! You're name says it all, brother. Scum…

It is called the "Bill of Rights" for a reason. They are our rights! Read it! It is full of "congress shall nots", dimwit! The founders did not trust congress and the Bill of Rights was a condition demanded by several of the founders to get them to commit to ratification of the new constitution. Originally, they proposed 12 but settled on these ten.
The only way to disarm the American people is by Amending the constitution or holding a convetion and rewriting it and that ain't even close to happening now.

Liberals, they know so much that isn't true

The language pertaining to "a well-regulated militia" is most certainly NOT overlooked; it comes up every time the Second Amendment is debated. The phrase is obviously not intended to interfere with "the right of the people to keep and bear arms." If it were, the latter language would refer to "such people," "those people," or some other limiting language indicating that "the people" in question was limited to militia.

The NRA had absolutely NOTHING WHATSOEVER to do with the Aurora; they said nothing beforehand, and they've said nothing since the incident occurred. So what's all the brouhaha about the NRA? They weren't involved.

Your article draws much the same conclusions as our expat blog about the way those pinko journos shrug off their responsibility to research 'news.'
    That innocent Holmes should sue!

And what a shock that Bloomberg jumped straight in. Even Obama has given it a decent interval though I guess he'll soon be using it as gun control propaganda fodder.

Amazing that none of the usual suspects has blamed Sarah Palin, yet.

During most of human history – and presently with those humans who remain in tribal societies faced with dangers from raiders and predatory animals – male members of the tribe are expected to defend the group and die fighting as may be necessary. They are all warriors, even as on a daily basis they are farmers, herdsmen, potters, smiths, etc. In our frontier days men dropped their plows and grabbed their rifles when raiders struck. Again, it was expected of them and they killed those who tried to harm their families and the group as a whole. Today we live in "protected" societies and the warrior obligation has been relegated to others. A mistake. I believe with all my heart that the males or our species have an obligation to protect and defend unto death their loved ones and the weak and helpless of their societies. I am armed and will do my duty. Shouldn't you?

If Pat Brown says that a fascination with video games is enough to trigger mass murder in a fragile mind, what does he say about generations of successful attacks on our cultural standards and injunctions?

I wonder what Mr. Brown thinks about the movement to "de-institutionalize" the mentally ill, so that long-term involuntary hospitalization for crazies is a distant memory?

If the prosecution of Holmes is true to Colorado form, he will be found Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity. Holmes will play the crazy card for all he's worth, and he'll be laughing all the while. If his photos are any indication, he's been laughing for a long time.

Why not go around the theme and suggest that the shooter was an anarchist instead? Daniel Pipes warned that anarchy was a looming problem around the world. Occupy Wall Street was the media pet in America. Now that there is a gigantic list of charges against the members, it is not a stretch to imagine this shooter was influenced by the protests in Denver earlier this year.

it can just as easily be contrived , that he attended a tea party meeting and drank some of their paranoia tea .

Let me inject some non-political stuff here. The man who did this was a lunatic. Just like Breivik. I hope he gets what's coming to him. The man deserves the death penalty and I hope it comes into play here.

  • Amused

Hows about injecting some objectivity here .At the moment no one knows jack . Breivik DID have political motivation. Both deserve the death penalty . There are questions , where did this kid get 14k to buy all this stuff in 2 months ? WHY did his mother immediatelky know it was her son upon hearing of the shooting ?
Yes both are lunatics , and as I said before NO ONE will ever outsmart crazy .

So, you're saying that Congress should nullify the Constitution? How patriotic of you. You must be so proud. Also…you are a filthy spammer.

  • Judahlevi

There are already laws against murdering innocent people – this guy didn't care – and he wouldn't care about any law saying he couldn't carry a gun outside his house.

Does anyone truly believe that more "laws" will keep someone from breaking the law? Absolutely not. It will only prevent law abiding citizens from enjoying their private security rights.
