Instead, Spielberg and Kushner will work to turn Lincoln into an effeminate he-man Obama-type liberal. Kushner actually told New York magazine that “He was a deeply progressive man and a deep believer in the Constitution. Any party that could make George Bush, who has raped the Constitution, is not one that Abe Lincoln would want anything to do with.”
Insipid? Of course. But this sort of benighted stupidity serves as political wisdom in Hollywood. Which is just one reason why the honchos continue to churn out liberal vanity project after liberal vanity project, all the while decrying the fact that the only movies that make money have clear heroes and villains and lots of explosions. And so we end up with a clear division between the movies slated to make money and the movies slated to get directors, writers, and producers laid by those impressed by cheap profundity. Every movie is now either The Smurfs or The Ides of March. There’s not much in between.
And that’s too bad. There are many serious stories to be told that don’t involve talking points direct from the DNC. There are writers in Hollywood dying to tell those stories. But those writers won’t be employed so long as Hollywood continues to enforce its monopoly against conservative points of view.
After I wrote my last book, Primetime Propaganda, I called up founder of People for the American Way and creator of All in the Family Norman Lear. I asked him to condemn discrimination against conservatives in Hollywood based on his long record of rhetorical support for free speech. He denied completely that any such discrimination took place, despite the proof I presented to him. He promised to call me back after checking my evidence; he never did.
A few weeks ago, Lear spoke at the 30th anniversary of PFAW. There he declared, “I want to suggest that we lefties start laying claim to what we see as ‘sacred’ and serve it up proudly to the religious right — to the James Dobson, Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Karl Rove … hatemongers, sheathed in sanctity, and to the Koch brothers, the types that fund them and use them so effectively for their own political power-grabbing purposes.”
This is the face of the true Hollywood – the Hollywood that hates conservatives and discriminates against anybody in Hollywood with a different set of political beliefs. That bias is reflected in Hollywood’s product. Until Hollywood learns to embrace the entire American audience again, rather than writing off the right-wing rubes, box office receipts will continue to drop.
