Hollywood’s Dishonest Face

Instead, Spielberg and Kushner will work to turn Lincoln into an effeminate he-man Obama-type liberal.  Kushner actually told New York magazine that “He was a deeply progressive man and a deep believer in the Constitution.  Any party that could make George Bush, who has raped the Constitution, is not one that Abe Lincoln would want anything to do with.”

Insipid?  Of course.  But this sort of benighted stupidity serves as political wisdom in Hollywood.  Which is just one reason why the honchos continue to churn out liberal vanity project after liberal vanity project, all the while decrying the fact that the only movies that make money have clear heroes and villains and lots of explosions.  And so we end up with a clear division between the movies slated to make money and the movies slated to get directors, writers, and producers laid by those impressed by cheap profundity.  Every movie is now either The Smurfs or The Ides of March.  There’s not much in between.

And that’s too bad.  There are many serious stories to be told that don’t involve talking points direct from the DNC.  There are writers in Hollywood dying to tell those stories. But those writers won’t be employed so long as Hollywood continues to enforce its monopoly against conservative points of view.

After I wrote my last book, Primetime Propaganda, I called up founder of People for the American Way and creator of All in the Family Norman Lear.  I asked him to condemn discrimination against conservatives in Hollywood based on his long record of rhetorical support for free speech.  He denied completely that any such discrimination took place, despite the proof I presented to him.  He promised to call me back after checking my evidence; he never did.

A few weeks ago, Lear spoke at the 30th anniversary of PFAW.  There he declared, “I want to suggest that we lefties start laying claim to what we see as ‘sacred’ and serve it up proudly to the religious right — to the James Dobson, Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Karl Rove … hatemongers, sheathed in sanctity, and to the Koch brothers, the types that fund them and use them so effectively for their own political power-grabbing purposes.”

This is the face of the true Hollywood – the Hollywood that hates conservatives and discriminates against anybody in Hollywood with a different set of political beliefs.  That bias is reflected in Hollywood’s product.  Until Hollywood learns to embrace the entire American audience again, rather than writing off the right-wing rubes, box office receipts will continue to drop.

Hollywood has not produced very many good movies in recent years, and has a very distorted view of the real world, so no big surprise here.

    • Questions

Maybe it's because you haven't seen too many movies.

      • Anonymous

No, "it" is simply the fact that the movies made by Hollywood are mostly crap.

  • oldtimer

Scum.. Don't support them. Hurt them where they are hurt most, bankaccount.

Instead of anti-Conservative American movies, we need popular well-made movies that are like propaganda for the Muslim and Drug-Cartel countries who see our films … showing our profoundly confident and limit-less country at its best. In some 50s movies the lmarried or otherwise in lvoe man/woman couple raising their own children was a popular form of entertainment. That style inspired many Muslims and HIspanic Catholics to asspire to our freedoms. Why spend money on fighting them when we can win them over to admiring our system if we stop putting our more conservative attributes down.

  • NotaBene

Um, has it ever occurred to you that revenues are down because you can watch any movie for free on the Internet? Do you think that ‘might’ have an effect on moviegoing?

    • Stephen_Brady

But if you do, you don't get the movie experience, including horrible food … but good-tasting, nonetheless … and good company.

      • "gunner"

even "for free on the internet" i don't watch much of the current hollywood crap, why should i allow the hollywood leftists to use a computer i built, and internet service i pay for, to come into my home and insult me. even on t.v. my wife, by her choice, only watches the old "classics" made when hollywood was still part of america. i'm making a list of the movies we plan to see in the theatre in the coming year, its a very short list.

    • Patty

Now how does that work? ANY movie for FREE?

  • Wretch45

The movies are garbage and as we conservatives raise OUR own awareness it makes it easier to decide what to spend our $$ on and what to skip just by watching the trailers for these movies. My 20 something kids don’t even go to the movies anymore because it’s all the same crap. Political agenda sexual agenda perversion agenda. It’s boring us Hollywood so you keep spending your own $$ to scratch each others backs. I will stay home and put a movie in my DVD player from a better time for movies.

    • Questions

You're a fool who has no idea how movies get conceived or made. Instead of seeing an "agenda" lurking within every frame, how about going and seeing for yourself. Cultural politicians like Ben Shapiro, I'm afraid, won't be of much help.

Movies nowadays are garbage, it's a fact, Saying so doesn't qualify you as a fool.

My wife just asked the question, "Why do they want to destroy our history?" My answer was, "So they can have a part in destroying our country."

It's as simple as that …

    • Questions

The sheer stupidity of anti-Hollywood rhetoric knows no bounds. If Hollywood really were bent on "destroying" America, the studios would have been shuttered decades ago.

      • Atikva

Decades ago, there were still some good movies without an agenda, no reason therefore to shut the studios – and who could have done it anyway, ours was still a free country in those days.

Hollywood is not bent on destroying America, of course. Only these "artists" haven't woken up yet to the absurdity of the socialist dream – which would be OK if they would keep it to themselves and concentrate on doing an honest job instead of trying to convince others of that nonsense.

By the way, not one masterpiece has ever been produced in a socialist country, in any field of the arts, ever. Socialism that the Hollywood set would so much like to see triumph in America kills the arts, and they are too blind to realize it.

      • Stephen_Brady

Maybe it's a response to the sheer stupidity of Hollywood.

However, like most Leftists, those who run Hollywood think that … when the revolution comes … it will leave them, their mansions, and their fortunes intact. Unfortunately for them, revoloutions tend to devour their own children …

        • WilliamJamesWard

Exactly so Stephen. Hollywood is done and entertainment that is fit
for the family and decent folk is not what they are about. A good story
with decent script and good acting is not so hard to come by, it takes
real effort to come up with the trash of today………………….William

          • Stephen_Brady

I'm surpised that they don't update "The Grapes of Wrath", with the "okies" replaced by so-called "immigrant workers". They're running out of ideas, and so … for the most part … they just redo older movies, starring people who have some of the biggest egos I've ever seen.

For example, if they re-made "Casablanca", Leonardo DeCaprio would undoubtedly replace Humphrey Bogart, and the movie would probably take place somewhere in the South, with the "nazis" replaced by the Klan. Sean Penn coud,of course, play the enlightened local Sheriff …

What's wrong with The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo? It may not be "high art" but it is about anti-Nazi and anti-woman hating, both of which were witnessed by Swedish author Stieg Larsson when he was growing up. Unfortunately his confusion and lack of other outlets (Scandinavian countries being ulta left) had him drift towards communism but that does not detract from the central subject matter of this movie.

    • Richard Ong

So if you're confused and lack outlets for your work in an ultra-left environment, the logical thing to do to obtain clarity and outlets is to embrace communism, itself ultra-left? I'm obtaining confusion here.

    • CanadConserv

Excellent movie, I agree. And it's in no way a left leaning film. But it is hard to watch at times, given the sexual violence, even if the heroine's ability to shake just about anything off and drive on is so inspiring.

      • Lisa_H

I concur with your assessment! If anything, she (Lisbeth) is determined not to be a victim even though her vulnerabilites show through at times. The violence IS hard to take but it's not gratuitous. I mentioned about Larsson's political leanings because I thought maybe that is why it was included in this article as a humiliating/dishonest Hollywood movie.

        • CanadConserv

The right has to be careful not to do that which the left does – assume anyone with political leanings opposite yours is necessarily infusing all that they do with political bias. Besides, as you suggest, no matter Larsson's politics, he has, in fact, created something of a conservative hero.Steve

Seems like every sector of the media is struggling to get good content, but in an atmosphere where our education system is failing. More theater screens and more and more channels to fill with content. Feed the ever proliferating beast. Technically, every producer/movie manufacturer gets better and better, but then there's the challenge of story (i.e. writing and telling a good story). With proliferation, it seems the answer to it is more and more contrivance, focus on what I call scuzball living (thieves, druggies, warped murderers, nymphos/sex addicts), and fantasy (to include the fantastic, which used to be labeled "horror" or "science fiction") done by, what seems to be, relatively fewer and fewer really educated people in the industry. Note now the proliferation of remakes and reruns.

Also now, movies and TV are not enough. Last night as I was listening to late nite radio, I learned there is someone asserting with all seriousness that, in the early 1980s, the CIA secretly teleported a select group of people to Mars and, I kid you not, one of the selectees was Barack Obama! The asserter is prepared to bring other witnesses (and fellow travelers) forward to "verify" the event (and Obama's participation). Want to know more? Go to such and such website.

    Frankly Hollywood became irrelevant.

  • Freedom John

Having been in the Hollywood movie machine for many years, I just see where the scripts have become increasingly more and more shallow because people with life experience are shunned as being too old to contribute anything. It's a young mans game. The days of very talented actors or actresses are over. The majority just play themselves and they are all ultra-cool and unbelievable. And remember, Hollywood is not on any quest to enlighten the world so they cater to the level of their audience and the audience can only understand hi octane blowing up high action, sex and not much else. Every now and they will produce a half way intelligent film but only if they have to. The movie executive is generally very unimaginative themselves. So, you get what you get and to expect anything more is wasting your time. If you're actually there for a good film watch the classics.

    • Jim_C

Real writing talent has always been relatively rare; in an era of so many kinds of productions, its true you see more mediocre stuff because the real talent can only take on so many projects.

I just watched two films yesterday that, to my discredit, I'd never seen before. One was the excellent Casablanca; the other was the dreadfully bad Maltese Falcon. The first–very well -written; the latter, a hodgepodge of hackneyed nonsense. But I'd HEARD of the Maltese Falcon for so long, I'd assumed it was a great film. So we need to be careful when we compare this era to bygone eras.

It does get so tiresome. Right now, I am trying to casually watch Mulholland Falls on Netflix, a dirty cop 1950's whodunnit which would be pretty good. Nice plot, good actors, great scenery and photography and music….but right in the middle of nowhere comes John Malkewitz waxing philosophical. So jarring to the plot, so Hollywooden head. That didn't happen back then and so the authenticity that I was enjoying with the fabulous settings and costuming — the 1950's effect was ruined by the H-wood weirdo mind set. I am gonna win, however. I am going to enjoy the movie in spite of them.

  • http://www.boycottscotland.com Edward

I get greater enjoyment watching a REAL classic movie on TCM on cable TV introduced by Robert Osborne and his commentary before and after the film than any crap in the theaters today.

I also find British films to be the most repulsive – with the exception of "The Kings Speech".

Ever see "The English Patient"? Feel cheated too?

My youngest child is now 18. For the past nearly 30 years, one of my biggest enemies in raising a family was the mass media and the garbage it put out. For years so much of the movies, TV shows, radio shows, video games, magazines, you name it, were nothing more than the most vulgar garbage imaginable. It was almost a full time job countering it. It's the only thing I'll grant the Muslims – they are right in hating our popular culture. That's what they see of Americans and they don't know anything more about us. I'm past angry. My family's raised now but I will never forget how damaging this whole thing was for us parents trying to do a decent job.

Hollywood and TV have been a destructive force, and that is true. But the dumbing down and poor quality of its work shouldn't be a surprise. The "writers" and producers of all this dreck are the products of the public schools, an established and inescapable agent that has been dedicated to the destruction of this country's values and its children for, at least, 100 years. With the establishment of a federal agency to further its cause, that destruction has been kicked into high gear.

    • Jim_C

How dumb can one post be? First of all, be specific. TV and film have always had a gamut of quality, from dreck to pure art. No different now than at any time in history, in fact, the output is probably of consistently higher quality now that Hollywood and network TV compete with cable. Second, you are kidding yourself if you think that the people doing the writing for Hollywood are anything but the products of oh-so tony private schools and elite education–yes, even the dreck. Read up on the bios. Ain't a lot of average joes in there. Kinda shoots holes into your little formulation.

  • Jim_C

First of all, since the Sopranos (and probably before), television has nearly usurped the cinema in terms of the quality of output. Only a fool (like 13Sisters76, above) could think the writers of things like The Wire, Deadwood, the Shield, Slings and Arrows–take your pick of any number of shows–is anything but the equal (I'd argue superior) to any fiction written today, and certainly to any films of the past.

Second, Frontpage has long tried to yoke Hollywood's receipts to its political leanings–Shapiro is its latest shill to take this task on. But that industry's output either entertains, or doesn't, regardless of politics. Either make a case based on evidence (ever heard of that in law school, Shapiro?) or stop goading people based on their prejudices.

And Tree of Life and Melancholia were amazing cinematic experiences. No they weren't Bruckheimer films–so what?

It has come to my attention that men like Kushner look for homosexuality wherever their attention is drawn. Kushner's "husband" was a guest lecturer in my film class, where he showcased the 1948 movie "Red River" starring John Wayne and Montgomery Clift. The whole point of him showing clips from the movie was to point out the film's homoerotic overtone. Although not a movie buff, at the time I was familiar with John Wayne's conservatism and found this part of his lecture highly suspect.

    • Martel64

I'm afraid many gays see that movie that way, specifically the relationship between Montgomery Clift's ( Because he was Gay ),and John Ireland's characters, and use it for their usual propaganda.
