Obama: Troops Fighting On My Behalf

Ben Shapiro is a Senior Shillman Journalism Fellow at the David Horowitz Freedom Center and Editor-in-Chief of TruthRevolt.org. He is the author of the new book "The People vs. Barack Obama: The Criminal Case Against the Obama Administration" (Threshold Editions).

This week, President Obama finally came out to the world as a same-sex marriage supporter. Like Rosie O’Donnell, everyone knew what President Obama was long ago; still, his timing was bizarre, coming a day after North Carolina overwhelmingly stood up for traditional marriage.

What was even weirder, though, was Obama’s language in embracing same-sex marriage:

[W]hen I think about those soldiers or airmen or marines or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf and yet feel constrained, even now that ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ is gone, because they are not able to commit themselves in a marriage, at a certain point I’ve just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married.

It’s easy to miss the key point in this Melville-ian sentence. It isn’t that Obama supports same-sex marriage. It’s that he thinks that soldiers, airmen, marines and sailors are “out there fighting on my behalf.”

Say what?

The members of the US military fight on behalf of all Americans, not Obama personally. Now, it’s possible that President Obama meant just that – he was expressing individual gratitude for a collective benefit we all receive from the military.

Or, it’s possible that Obama thinks that the troops are out there carrying out his work.

Based on Obama’s treatment of the killing of troops in the past, it’s quite likely the latter. Take, for example, Obama’s trip to South Korea in 2009, in which he told troops that they made a “pretty good photo-op.” Or Obama giving himself a shout-out for flying to Afghanistan last week … in the middle of giving shout-outs to actual troop units on the ground in country. Or, most egregiously, Obama patting himself on the back repeatedly regarding the killing of Osama Bin Laden.

Obama seems to see the troops as his personal plaything. It’s certainly true politically – last week, he announced that on behalf of the troops, he would be transforming America:

As a new greatest generation returns from overseas, we must ask ourselves, what kind of country will they come back to? Will it be a country where a shrinking number of Americans do really well while a growing number barely get by? Or will it be a country where everyone gets a fair shot, everyone does their fair share, and everyone plays by the same set of rules – a country with opportunity worthy of the troops who protect us?

The troops are a prop for Obama. They either do his bidding abroad so that he’s free to pursue his agenda at home, or they can be used as excuses to push for a more socialistic government domestically.

Even when Obama is attempting to be self-effacing, his arrogance shines through. Troops, both gay and straight, should be offended by his tendency to politick with their sacrifice, and to treat their sacrifice as action on his personal behalf.

Thank You all Military men/women for doing what I did not have the guts to do in 1969, this current occupyer of OUR house must be retired for this Grand Old Republic to survive.

    • truebearing

      Bravo! Well done.

  • SoCalMike

I was absolutely floored when I heard Boy Obama yet again make another mega misspeak but it wasn't a misspeak.
The words he used "on my behalf" reflect his view of WHY the troops are there.
In his mind they are there for his benefit. And he is here for our benefit too so if the troops need to be used as propaganda or cannon fodder, that's no problem for Obama because he's "building bridges and reaching out."
No problem for Obama and US State Dept empowering the Muslim Brotherhood so long as the Republicans don't regain power. And if they do, the malignant career parasites are State will "show them."

Dictators are so predictable, aren't they?

This one is just not worried about our votes counting in November. That worries me.

  • Herbster

The current occupant of the White House, (And his angry wife) forget that they are hired help with a four year contract, potentially renewable for another four years. They live in MY house (Public housing) and are supported by their "Epmployer" – the taxpayer. They work for us, not the reverse. Bravo to the American Military Officers Against Obama. They speak for millions of the military, both active and retired. The present occupant believes that the Military is to be used as a prop – a background if you will, to show how much he and the angry wife "Appreciate and respect" the Military. Witness the shameful photo op from Ft. Stewart of the current occupant and his angry wife walking past row after row of saluting soldiers. (Caesar reviewing HIS legions?) For shame, and shame upon the voters who put this fraud in office. I hope they remember the old adage come November, "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me."

He's just not bothered by facts like the people who live in the real world.

        • Vidal Bassoon

I keep thinking I'd like to try that living-in-the-world-of-my-imagination thing but I just can't believe it works.

          • Schlomotion

It is clear that he did not mean "his own personal army."

          • Vidal Bassoon

            It's clear that you're a delusional moron.

  • Looking4Sanity

I just put my finger on what historical figure Obama reminds me of…Benito Mussolini.

Both are impotent little peacocks with an arrogant streak that dwarfs the solar system. Useful idiots only marginally aware of the marionette strings that animate them. Quasi-"leaders" for whom their country and their countrymen mean less than nothing to them. Aspiring to greatness with no Earthly idea how worthless and reprobate they actually are. It would be laughable, if not pitiable, except for the realization that hundreds of millions of lives hang in the balance.

    • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nLNn2YflwNs Roger

At least Benito had the trains running on time.

Obama can't even do that much.

      • Looking4Sanity

No one wept for Mussolini. I wonder if Obama has factored that into his thinking?

        • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nLNn2YflwNs Roger

Do you think Mama Robinson weeps when she thinks of him?

          • Looking4Sanity

Is that a Simon and Garfunkel reference I'm looking at?

          • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nLNn2YflwNs Roger

I didn't see that, and I should have!

And I didn't even bring Obama's family into this, those darling girls Malaria and Sharia.

          • Looking4Sanity

“Malaria and Sharia”That's a hoot. I wonder how long it will be before they aspire to destroy nations of their own?

        • Alex

and Mussolini didn't end up with a foot in his mouth…it was something else…

          • hammernh

We can only "hope" for the same end for B. Hussein Obama.

  • Alex

see, Al Qaeda?? HE told HIS troops to kill your leader.
    He wasn't/was/isn't/is for everything.
We know real unempl. is over 20% – so even a dead mouse would beat him at the ballot box at least 60/40

    • Looking4Sanity

You failed to factor in the 10% of idiots who are saying they will write in the Texas lunatic Ron Paul. That takes your balance down to 50/50. Your margin of error just evaporated.

This country is in deep $h!t.

  • trickyblain

So it's wrong to say that the troops are fighting for MY freedoms? That the troops serve MY country and therefore on MY behalf?

If he said "our," Shapiro would accuse him of being a collectivist.

    • Maxie

      A NARCISSISTIC collectivist!

    • vladdy

You are not really defending this remark, are you? Nobody can possibly be such a fan boy or girl that they would not see the hubris in this.

  • mrbean

The Obamas imagine themselves as royalty by his wife's outrageous extravagance and their multiple vacations and Whitehouse parties with the hip-hop crowd. So his thoughts are along the line "They fight for King and Country" seems appropriate to him as he is a King in his own mind. Or maybe it is worse. " They fight for Caesar and the glory of the empire" – and if course he is the godlike Caesar.

  • Chris Nichols

Since you apparently didn't read the article, or lack any comprehension skills – entirely possible in your case- let me post from the article :
"Now, it’s possible that President Obama meant just that – he was expressing individual gratitude for a collective benefit we all receive from the military.

Or, it’s possible that Obama thinks that the troops are out there carrying out his work."

He then starts the next paragraph explaining the premise of the last sentence giving examples, he never said specifically that it was wrong. Now, if you are done throwing out strawmen, maybe you can produce a counter argument that makes sense.

    • trickyblain

No, he submits the obvious (first sentence), then mysteriously discounts the obvious in an obvious hack-job aimed at obvious imbeciles who will obviously go along with anything that makes our President look bad so they will froth and "comment" on a message board. Then Shapiro can scour the $1.35 he made on this article and retain his "Shillman Journalism" fellowship, even thought nobody outside of the "Freedom Center" has any idea what that even is.

I'm actually pretty comfortable with reading comprehension, Chris.

Emperor of the World, Obama: Troops Fighting On My Behalf

Horrifying. What do our troops think? That they are fighting for Obama or fighting for America? Will the media interview our troops to ask them? Only if they conceal their identities, of course.

  • Ken

The troops are fighting for the country, not YOU!!! What an egotistical, meglomaniac!!

    One of us:
That he is a Gay, Muslim “Light”, Communist grifter the Gays know, a modern day Caligula “light”, after paying for his presidency they are tired from promises and want a tangible result, before his second term flames leaving them with a hole in the pocket and empty handed. They want an advance on their original payments, and he knows that they know that he is Gay (AC/DC model). Making his case under emergency environment to a Gay reporter (ABC), throwing pre-arranged softball questions is just what the sinister greaseball Axelrod (a certified mentored Communist) thought would work best? under these miserable circumstances. It does not take a genius to figure it out, because many of his bundlers, appointees, friends and close associates , going back to Occidental College, Columbia University, his trips to Pakistan are mainly associated with sex perverts. With the help of the Unions and the Chicago Left these organized crime Alinsky style mob-methods have been in use since 2007 . More than 5 persons died in the process of the 2008 election cycle, two gay men he had an affair with in Chicago, (choir boys who sing no more) 2 persons of the Electoral College, one Gay, Catholic author, one passport office clerk, wasted in his own car, as well two persons associated with Breitbarts demise that are gone ( the last person who saw him and the Coroner-RIP). Therefore, the gays know that they could be targeted and perhaps they are making their case now? If he does not deliver he could be OUTED. The Gays played this ugly game on the pages of the dailies during the hot 80's during the AIDS crisis, naming public officials, rich players, and celebrities who did not answer the call, by publicly shaming them. It is a forced hand. He is subject to blackmail. So far the media watched his back, covering up for any indiscretion, from his personal hunky valet, shipped to business school, a former star basket ball player to dates with gays, numerous Gay charities, hunks playing ball in the White House while mama Michelle is overseas slumming in designer dresses, or snake dancing in Azania, (South Africa) while he plays, with many gays! He has to oblige for not being honest with the public about who he is, where he came from and his true proclivities are subject to endless threats, and he must accommodate the gay extortionists, the Hollywood celebrities, the fringe lunatic lefty "Anarchists" of which many are flaming queens, and assorted molesters of various indulgences, this is simply a case of new age alien Caligula pressed against the wall with a sharp knife close to his gay neck while he is evolving.

    http://www.buzzfeed.com/rosiegray/obamas-first-ga

"He was a wonderful guy,” Obama said at the time. “He was the first openly gay professor that I had ever come in contact with, or openly gay person of authority that I had come in contact with."

  • John

I didn't hear the speech, but isn't he just personalizing the general feeling, "I'm so glad those folks are fighting for us"? For example, "I can't believe Jesus died for me!" Yes, He died for all, but he died for ME. I don't think Obama's saying it the way Ben is taking it.

    • Maxie

Of course not. Just like when he said he was "…just five days away from fundamentally transforming the United States of America." (Oct. 30, 2008) It was just a figure of speech; you know, something you just toss off the top of your head when you're trying to fill the void in a dull conversation: "You know John, I 've been thinking, I should fundamentally transform the United States of America. Ya know, get rid of that Constitution n'all – it's s-o-o-o testerday; written by a bunch of old dead white guys n'all . . . "

    • vladdy

So it's: I didn't hear the speech, but I'm giving obama, who often lies, whitewashes, or shows inhuman arrogance, the benefit of the doubt. Thankfully, most of us are past that point.

  • Jim_C

Good gravy, did someone get paid for this tripe?

OBVIOUSLY Obama is generalizing. When you say "Jim_C, how can you be against the war when those brave men are fighting for YOUR freedom" you mean me, but you also mean US–OUR freedom.

DUH! New low in dumbassdom, FPM. Seriously.

Oh–it's Shapiro. Dimwit extraordinaire. No surprise.

    • reader

Another winner, Jim. Just like the "clinging to guns and religion." Keep insulting the voters – smart politics, as you say. Perhaps, even a touch too smart…

    • vladdy

Two reasons the left lacks credibility — their constant fanboy support of obama and their inability to have an adult debate, instead of resorting to jr high level namecalling.

  • Fred Dawes

Good news all military people must be against that person! See Alex Jones and savage nation.

So I said to my hamster Napoleon, "someone thinks they are you"…………….William

  • anonymous

I have news for Mr. Obama. Everyone in the military is “feeling constrained”. I believe the correct military terms for it would be words like “self-discipline ,honor, duty, courage,” etc.

  • TheRandyGuy

I can't stand Obama, but you gotta admit every president has used the troops as a photo op at some point. Regan, both Bush's, and Clinton all tried to appear macho behind soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines. What I'd like to know (and Obama wouldn't) is the level of contempt the military has for him, his administration, and Dems in general. There's a reason they have disenfranchised military voters when Dems are in charge, and it sure as hell isn't because the military supports them.

  • Buzz

I guess that is why ex-Navy Seal Woods died in Behgahzi. I suppose Obama is really glad Woods was "fighting (and died) on his behalf".

  • Schlomotion

He didn't say it. He said words that certain crazy people misconstrue. But then, who would you vote for? I doubt anyone good.

  • Schlomotion

Nice quote. It still means the same as if anyone not the President said it.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nLNn2YflwNs Roger

But he did say it and he's the president. He said it from his Presidential perch with the teleprompters guiding him. That means something to the rest of the world.

  • davarino

    "my muslim faith"
