‘Two and a Half Men’ Star Risks Career to Tell Truth

Ben Shapiro is a Senior Shillman Journalism Fellow at the David Horowitz Freedom Center and Editor-in-Chief of TruthRevolt.org. He is the author of the new book "The People vs. Barack Obama: The Criminal Case Against the Obama Administration" (Threshold Editions).

This week, Angus T. Jones, who plays teenager Jake on the hit sitcom Two and a Half Men, told the truth about the show on which he is featured: it harms American culture. Jones, who has become a believing Christian, cut a video for Forerunner Christian Church in which he stated, “If you watch Two and a Half Men, please stop watching Two and a Half Men. I’m on Two and a Half Men, and I don’t want to be on it. Please stop watching it, and filling your head with filth.” Jones made the point that television has a marked impact on how people think, feel, and shape their own values. “Do some research on the effects of television and your brain,” he urged, “and I promise you you’ll have a decision to make when it comes to television.”

The blowback has been immediate from the left. It’s one thing for Charlie Sheen to go completely insane, hook up with two willing ladies, and then do a drunken tour on which he repeats the word “winning” ad infinitum. It’s quite another for a young man to express the Christian view of much of the trash on television.

So instead of focusing on Jones’ message – an eminently true one – the left is calling him crazy. E! Online ran a piece today suggesting that Jones’ church membership actually made him a cult member:

A source close to the situation tells E! News that both Jones’ mom, Carey, and those who work with him on his CBS sitcom want to make sure the 19-year-old actor hasn’t been “brainwashed” by his new church …

There’s no question that the head of the church to which Jones belongs has some fringe views. Christopher Hudson, that church leader, has expressed the belief that Jay-Z’s albums are a Satanic plot — which may be acceptable as an artistic critique, but less so as a political point of view. He has also stated that New York City’s gas crisis in the wake of Hurricane Sandy could lead to cannibalism.

This is kooky stuff. But Jones’ perspective about the television show in which he stars is far from kooky. Two and a Half Men routinely pushes promiscuity – Charlie Sheen and Ashton Kutcher both play serial womanizers who are too cool for school – and that has an impact on the culture.

Even Vice President Joe Biden has acknowledged that television has a marked impact on values; he cited Will & Grace and Ellen Degeneres as two of the leading forces in making homosexuality acceptable to the American people. But while the left celebrates one of its own who says that television drives America’s values, it can’t stand when a non-liberal does it. So they’ve determined to discredit Jones’ view by discrediting Jones himself. Aside from centering their fire on Christopher Hudson, the media has decided that Jones shouldn’t be heard because he’s a hypocrite for taking Two and a Half Men money. ABC News, in its usual “objective” fashion, reported on Jones’ statement that the show is “bad news” and a “deceptive enemy” by writing: “That ‘enemy’ has made him rich. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the 19-year-old actor earns about $350,000 per episode, and received a raise along with co-stars Jon Cryer and Ashton Kutcher when the show was renewed for a tenth season in May. ‘Two and a Half Men’ tapes about 20 episodes per season and has been on for 10 seasons.”

But, of course, many people in Hollywood don’t live up to their own standards. ABC News never criticizes Al Gore for riding around in a private jet, or Michael Moore for doing the same. ABC News never checks into the charitable giving of those who espouse higher taxes. When it comes to an actor expressing a conservative point of view, though, the actor must be chastised for hypocrisy. The hypocrisy argument is always a weak ad hominem; people can stand for certain values and struggle to act in accordance with them. But for the left, it’s a disqualifier. The good news for the left is that there are no standards on the left, so there are no hypocrites.

As to Jones’ main thrust, he’s eminently correct. In Hollywood, Two and a Half Men is actually considered a conservative show – Gawker.com labeled it one of the most conservative shows on television because it doesn’t have a regular openly gay character. But Two and a Half Men centers on sex, and the lack of consequences for irresponsible sex. Chuck Lorre, the creator, is a massive leftist pushing leftist social values – he says that in college, he “majored in rock & roll and minored in LSD,” and now he complains that the networks don’t do enough to “talk about human sexuality.” At the end of every episode of The Big Bang Theory, which he also produces, he places a text-heavy placard, very often political. Lorre knows that his shows have impact. And he likes it that way.

Hollywood knows it too, which is why they’ll try to ensure that Jones never works in town again. They might succeed. But if Jones has made even a few Americans aware of the political messages emanating from their televisions, he’ll have done some good.

Don't get too excited, he's starting to back peddle now.

    • asdf srthrt

      That's "backpedal".

      • bluffcreek1967

        Thank you for the correction.

    • wsk

      Money talks, BS walks.

  • LiveFreeOrDie

As someone pointed out, his lawyer read him the part in his contract where he could lose a ton of money if he was found to be in breach…. It's also amusing to read when religious Jews, who evangelicals believe are going to hell, believe they can be part of the club.

    • jakespoon

Any one can be a member of the "club" as you call it. Meet the membership requirements and you're in. Please join, we'd love to have you.

      • LiveFreeOrDie

You are changing the subject. Religious Jews (presumably like Michael Medved and possibly Mr. Shapiro), who do not believe in Christ (a membership requirement), are not in the club, right?
But it also depends on which flavor of the club one is in… I would guess that not that many Methodists and Presbyterians believe in the eternal damnation spoken of so clearly in the New Testament. But most evangelicals do, or should.

I don't watch network television, personally, and have never seen "Two and a Half Men", but I am guessing that Mr. Jones original comments were correct. The fact that he is backtracking is, IMO, hypocritical. But then, self-proclaimed membership in the club has *nothing* to do with one's behavior. Not ever.

        • jakespoon

I can't comment on any one else's condition, only they and God knows their heart. I do know about mine. When I realized I was lost and going to hell,I fell on my knees, a grown man crying, and asked Jesus to save me and He did. I am still a sinner and will be until the day I die. My life changed that day. As far as behavior, all I can say if you're really saved and love the Lord, your behavior will change. As I said I can't judge people's heart, just their actions. I pray and thank Him every day, more than once. I hope that helped.

        • tuffone3

He is a BRAND NEW christian. It takes some time and effort to "be transformed by the renewing of your mind".

    • bluffcreek1967

Actually, Jews started "the club" (as you say) and were its original founders. In fact, it was originally rather controversial when Gentiles began to join "the club" (read the Book of Acts).

  • KCC

what the hell is left? ive never seen it in articles before and 100x times referencing it makes it almost impossible to take seriously

    • Rifleman

Impossible is taking seriously someone who doesn't know what left is.

  • Deep_Space

The comparison with Sheen is instructive. You've got to believe an enormous amount of pressure was brought to bear on Jones to recant and this in itself is shameful because he is a very young man. As far as his future career goes I have observed that not many – but obviously some – TV stars make it beyond a successful series. After "Two and Half Men" I would guess that he will spend the rest of his life collecting royalties from re-runs (if that kind of thing exists), appearing in dinner theater productions, making occasional commercials, attending fan conventions for a fee, with cameos in future filth. Probably a good living supplemented with a littel "dabbling" in real estate.

    • Jay

Maybe he'll pull a Hasselhof and start a music career that's huge in Liechtenstein

  • P Bergeron

Jones is right on the money about the show it is filth! I applaud him for speaking out and hope he does leave the series. For those of you who think he doesn't know what left is; left is a force that will come against anyone who doesn't think like the "left", all others are not entitle to their opinion just the left.

    • bluffcreek1967

Exactly! If Jones' comments were directed at FOX, some benign show or a conservative program, he would be hailed as 'courageous' and 'bold' by the MSM!

  • Kenny

Give me a break. The show is pure comedy and it pokes fun at American values, especially sex. Lorre is a very successful producer because he understands his generation. Stop being so serious, relax and enjoy the comedy. It is the only show on mainstream television I can watch alone and laugh at out loud! And why do I find it so humorous? Because it always touches the nerves of truth, which is perhaps why it is so upsetting to those who can not laugh at themselves.

    • bluffcreek1967

I understand what you're saying, and I recognize that each person finds different things humorous. As I see it, however, this TV show is reflective of what a good many Americans think and feel about a host of life issues. We laugh, more or less, because it reflects our values, our culture, and how we view the world. I have watched this show and other ones similar to it, and while I laugh here and there, I always walk away feeling a little dirty ( so to speak).

    • tuffone3

You're right. The problem is the willingness of the viewers to set evil things before their own eyes.

    • Western Spirit

The show reflects American values alright, but not its traditional values so making fun of them isn't part of the show. Jones was right about it being trash.

The Left is the nastiest group of people possible, slandering and even ruining the lives of those who oppose them, and getting them on his case wouldn't be pleasant but his pocketbook is probably the reason for his recanting.

  • Demetrius M

Whether one finds the show raunchy or not is up to each individual, but EVERYONE else in Hollywood is allowed to voice their opinions and all the magazines and pop culture shows are supportive. Here we have someone giving his opinion, based on his religious beliefs, and he's lambasted.

Sure there are consequences for his opinions, but it seems the agenda here is tying them to brainwashing from a cult or religious faction. Yet we listen attentively to people in our society who are nothing more than media whores. People who actively seek to weaken social morality. That is fine, but bring up a voice against it, your tarred and feathered.
Okay, I babbling, my point is they can have naked gay pride parades in the streets and people can support it vocally, but if there is any moral dissent, you're a bigot. Sick of the double standards.

  • Jean

The show used to be sufficiently funny that I could quiet my conscience about the filth. Now it is banned in my home. Big Bang Theory is closing in on my ban threshold, which will, no doubt, precipitate a domestic civil war Angus Jones may backpedal, but we now know his honest opinion.

    • A 22 Year Old Man

I hear ya on the "ban threshold" concept.

  • JakeTobias

Can't comment. Have never seen the show. But, my understanding is, he was a kid when his parents signed him for the show. Hypocrisy isn't at play. But at this point, if he ever gets another job offer (not likely), then a charge of hypocrisy might be in order. And none of this retroactive crap liberals love to pull. If you decide later a product is harmful, like with tobacco for instance, they demand you give back, or give away, the "blood money." Forget it. Liberals can't be made happy anyway. That's why it's always "moremoremore!"

Oh, and let's not forget, these products, from tobacco, to alcohol, to TV shows, are consumed, or rejected, voluntarily. Which is why, again, it's always about the money to the left.

  • peter katt

Hitting on the hilarious two and a half men is exactly why the right is on the run – making this a cause celebe is nonsense – i am a mark levin conservative – totally dislike Obama – and find this show great entertainment – come on right-wingers – lighten up.

    • Jean

We have lightened up too often and too long.

  • Questions

Ben Shapiro has his schtick down to perfection: Pluck an anecdote about a TV show; make a shrill generalization about the entire entertainment industry; tack on the word "Hollywood" in the title or in the first paragraph to provoke reader disgust; and get various facts wrong or out of context. This Angus Jones, by the way, is something of a loon; a piece in The American Spectator (of all places) the other day highlighted as much. His opinion is not "the truth," much as Ben wishes it were.

    • Jean

What a very strange axe you're grinding.

      • Questions

I think the above poster may have had a point in asking people like you to lighten up.

        • Jean

          Well, of course you do.

    • makt68

Pluck an anecdote, make a shrill generalization, tack on words to provoke reader disgust, and get various facts wrong or out of context. You have liberal projection down to perfection.

  • Ghostwriter

Well,I haven't seen it so I can't comment on it.

  • A 22 Year Old Man

Unfortunately Angus seems to be caught up in what can honestly be called a "cult movement." One can hope that his reading the Bible will help him recognize that Seventh-Day Adventism isn't Biblical, but if you listened to the "testimony" video, he nowhere made any mention of salvation by grace through faith, repentance or any other core concept of salvation. He's gotten moral instruction, sure, but moralism is everywhere–you can get morals without believing in God. Morals aren't the issue, from the Christian perspective. It's what to do to deal with all the times we transgressed those moral lines in the sand. That's why Jesus' death on the Cross was necessary–it took the punishment for the BAD things we've done.

Sadly, if Angus Jones even is aware of this, he doesn't appear to understand its central importance. One can hope (and pray! Please people, do pray) that he will continue to grow and mature and eventually leave the SDA. Hopefully if there are any true saved Christians close enough to him to reach out, they will take action and explain the Gospel to him in clear terms. He may reject it. But at least we would know that he isn't being led astray unknowingly by false teachings.

Thoughts on this by other Christians in the readership here at FPM?

    • David R

I agree…even the demons believe in God, and they tremble. Hell will be full of good moral people who identified themselves as self-righteous while on earth, but who never received the Grace of God (pardon for sin by believing and receiving God's free gift…His beloved Son Jesus, the Lamb of God, paying with His blood shed on the cross.) He who knew no sin, taking our place and paying our debt in order to render us truly righteous and justified (and Heaven-bound)
We're all sinners and have offended God Almighty, and are all worthy of eternal hell. But Christ came to take on Himself the wrath of God regarding the punishment of our sins. All who believe in Christ as Saviour receives God's free pardon and forgiveness. Free for us but what a terrible cost for Christ!
For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life." (John 3:16)
I'm no better than Angus Jones, but I know my sins are forgiven because Christ paid my sin debt fully in order to satisfy the justice of God. He took my place as my Substitute!

    • bluffcreek1967

I agree! And thank you for pointing out that Seventh-Day Adventism isn't Biblical.

      • richard

Either is modern Evangelicalism. Go study the early Christian Church! From your point of view, "primitive Christianity" would not be biblical!. It wasn't to the Jews of that day since the only Bible they and the Christians used was the O.T.. Lots of stuff there that you ought to know about. I'm a Christian, but I have a real hard time with modern Christian bigotry.

        • bluffcreek1967

It's not 'Christian bigotry' when believers point out the errors or warn others of counterfeit Christian groups. This is a natural part of employing discernment in our lives and judging religious claims by the standard of Scripture. Time and space will not permit a lengthy reply to your understand of the primitive Christian church and its relationship to the Old Testament, but I would respectfully urge you to study what is referred to as New Covenant Theology. It will help in your understanding of the relationship between the Old and New Testaments and the role of the Law in the life of believers.

          • richard

You are absolutely right about time and space. The point is, the debate about what is true "Christianity" has gone on from the very first, and it has not been settled since. God will settle that. Not man and his philosophies or systematic theologies. You should know that.

          • bluffcreek1967

You're right Richard that these disputes will not be ultimately settled here on earth. Only God will do that. Even still, there remains an obligation to defend authentic biblical Christianity, and to warn the unsuspecting of error and false doctrine. Because some Christians have been petty over such issues or have not defended the faith in the right spirit, does not mean all such dialogues and debates should end. Believers are called to not only proclaim, but to also defend (apologetics). Moreover, not every 'systematic theology' is necessarily a man-made theology. But that discussion is for another time.

      • Ted

Advent-ism is no less Biblical than all of Pentecostalism. The main falsehood of Advent ism is they believe in modern day prophets, whom they believe Ellen G. White was one (all pentecostals believe in this, all of them). Adventists also believe in soul sleep and a few other strange things like vegetarianism, but they are nothing out of the ordinary modern so called Christian pentecostal doesn't believe 10x over in way more demented ways, especially anyone even remotely related to any of the tv preacher types of churches who are all way worse than adventists.

The point is the guy is still a kid basically and no doubt just starting to learn the Bible so it won't be for many years till he figures out what he truly will believe. I just hope he does not wimp out by all the legal threats and goes back on the show, or says some softy apology for the truth of what he already said, which will only make himself look like an idiot. He should stand behind what he said and just not go on and on about it, but just leave quietly and go on with his own life and take a few years to learn the Bible for himself before he comes back and opens his mouth to say anything again so he is better prepared for how to talk.

        • Ted

should be no less UNbiblical…..and "all pentecostals believe in modern day prophets (though not ellen g white specifically).

They are actually more biblical relating to The Sabbath day, although they add to it a false belief which messes up their witness for it by saying that people who only believe in 9 commandments, and not the 4th commandment (the sabbath) have the mark of the beast, although not all of them may believe that.

          • David R

Pentecostalism started in 1902 and is charismatic at best…teaching the movings of the spirit (I question if it's the true God's) and getting its gullible adherants to speak in tongues and wiggle around like fools.
Very little true Biblical doctrine is taught and much emphasis is placed on emotions and soul-searching. The Roman Catholic Church copies this sect because it too wants to woo the crowds, especially in Latino countries where spirits and witchcraft abound.
Pentecostalism is the wide road to perdition, populated by vulnerable immature pseudo-Christians who have very little Biblical knowledge but who are emotionally high until they crash and then find they had nothing to begin with.
Stay away from these hyper-religious counterfeits!

    • faithful servant

it seems that you never read the bible or that you didnt do your research on the SDA church. even the Cartolich church claims that SDA are the only church that follow the bible standards.

If you want a concise definition of the Left try "Arrogant, narcissistic, hypocrites."

It's no secret that if you don't march in popular opinion lockstep in Hollyweird, you won't work long there.
Liberal ,progressive, socialist and communist ideology rules there and the powers that be don't hire people that disagree with their politics .Democrats are all about control, domination and separation .

They will hire falling down drunks, drug addicts, religious extremists ,racists, the insane and child molesters before they will employ a known republican and Christian .

I feel sorry for Jones, growing up in the dangerous ,toxic, biased Hollywood system.
Working with someone like Sheen while going through childhood must be hell.

If he came out as gay, went to rehab, stole stuff, had sex with underage girls, got drunk and wrecked a car, waved guns around ,wished cancer on people ,played bongo drums stoned and naked or declared his hate for America – he'd be applauded and adored in Hollywood .

  • 1689

So Angus' walkback says that the people he works with are wonderful. In other words, they produce horrible filth (and they do), that no one should watch (and they shouldn't), but they're really great people (they aren't). Not really credible is it? I'm glad for Angus' spiritual epiphany, but sadly in the midst of it, he's learning a tough life lesson. You can't sleep in a den of vipers & not expect to get bit on your way out — and you can trust, with certainty, that Angus is on his way out. The Hollywood Way is the Chicago Way. As Obama said in 2009, "don't think we're not keeping score, brother."

It has taken the plight and perseverance of 1400 years of pure resilience thru torture and slavery for the black race to rise to the position of COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF OF THE WORLD’S MIGHTIEST WAR MACHINE. Moremad would be so envious of supposed to only be a slave Black-man Obama’s might …If the Black Race now hesitates or falters to strike at islam’s murdering neck then they have only themselves to blame. Black-man Obama is standing on the threshold of the greatest moral victory ever on Planet Earth. Ahimsa does not mean non-violence. Ahimsa means right-violence. Simple.
    ————————————
If Black-man Obama took on and smashed smashed smashed islam…
I’d vote for him to be the
    President of the World.
Smashing islam is a thinking man’s prophetic job and Black-man Obama is a smart and prophetic guy ….
a real thinker….and will have to provisionally think like moremad the dirty arab to smash moremad the dirty arab.
    Simple.
Obama would be the most loved name on Planet Earth.
A good factual TV speech should make everyone see the light .
    The Black-Man Obama Light.
The Black-man Obama light that lit up and extinguished dark and dense islam forever and ever and saved the human race.
If Black-man Obama smashes islam Black people all over the globe would rise several notches in everyone’s minds….global is the word…
Black men would commander respect for the smashing of islam. Super !!
This one will be for the planet’s real history books.

Finished ! We are finished ! The invention of the internal combustion engine and its thirst for petroleum products has led to the dumbest, dirtiest and filthiest people on the planet to be held in high regard and force-respected by all of us.
We have become the slaves of petroleum and our civilisation is accelerating to annihilation . From the Industrial Age to back to the Stone Age in 300 years. We are finished ! We had the weapons to flatten the vermin but at every step we held back and hesitated….We are finished !!
The silent stream of petro dollars and pounds and Euros to continuously silence us as our vocal leaders betrayed us for continuous tokens of underhand cash is the history that will never be taught as we will be as forgotten as the original inhabitants of so many cultures that filthy islam destroyed as it marched thru Buddhist Afghanistan and Hindu India and all the way to the furthest reaches of the globe. America is next ….Britain is already finished….France is gone ….Norway and the rest of Europe is over. We are finished.
What we refused to see was right there in our faces in their evil and regressive master book called the Koran…. So dirty we could not believe it…………but they did. We are finished. They invited us to read it but we refused….Our Global Supreme Courts refused to read it …in the end our children will be forced to read it as muslims. We are finished !!!
The islam juggernaut is coming for our children who will never know what cowards we were.
Islam will wake us up when muslims burn the Mona Lisa in France but it will be too late. Just like the copts in Egypt today.
Islam will wake us up when muslims smash the statue of david and burn the cistine chapel in Italy but it will be too late. Just like the copts in Egypt today .
Islam will wake us up when they smash and rout London city and its lovely architecture but it will be too late . Just like the copts in Egypt today.
Islam will wake us up when they execute all our fathers and rape our mothers for speaking up too late but it will be too late. Just like the copts in Egypt today.
We are finished as a civilization .

This guy is just a kid trying to "find himself." Wait for it – in a few years he'll be telling a woeful tale of how he fell for this cult and got brainwashed, had all his money stolen, alienated his friends, ruined his career, etc., etc., and how he now agrees with his Hollywood pals that religion is no fun and religious people are responsible for all the problems in the world. I'd be less cynical about his "conversion" if he were simply going to his local church every Sunday and reading his Bible – not schmoozing with loudmouth fringe preachers and generating publicity on behalf of same. As with any convert, check on him ten, twenty years from now. Is he still seeing the light, or was he just a flash in the pan?

I don't think Mr. Jones was very smart about this. It almost seems he has been sort-of brain washed by some organization. I watch the show in question and yes, it is rather raunchy but not something to get worried about. It is on par with the old shows "Soap" and "Married With Children". It is entertaining with some good belly laughs.

  • broken arrow

It was a great show with Sheen , but I would agree , I think Jones was duped by a religious group , BOTH not really thinking about Jone's contract obligation which surely must have a clause alluding to going public and telling people not to watch this show [ btw you can catch me in my next $350k episode]. I would give Jones the beneft of the doubt ,in that being naive made him a victim here . Upon this realization Jones quickly "walked it back " apologized to producers ,cast and crew whose jobs he jeopardized . The right thing to do would be to wait until contract time ,which is most likely yearly ,and simply refuse to sign and walk off according to his principles .
