Eleven Years of the Same Mistake

Pages: 1 2

The subsequent electoral success of Islamist parties eager to create governments that substantially incorporate illiberal shari’a law, or the ascendancy in Egypt of the anti-Western, illiberal Muslim Brothers–– whose credo is “God is our objective; the Quran is our constitution, the Prophet is our leader; jihad is our way; and death for the sake of God is the highest of our aspirations”––seemingly has not troubled this bipartisan cheerleading for the magic powers of democratic elections. The June 2012 election of Muslim Brother Mohammed Morsi as Egypt’s president was met with congratulations from Republican Senator John McCain and Independent Joseph Lieberman: “The Egyptian people have spoken,” the senators said in a joint statement, “and we respect their choice and look forward to working with President-elect Morsi in a spirit of mutual respect and in pursuit of the many shared interests of the United States and Egypt.”

The Obama administration has been particularly eager to perpetuate this delusional belief that democratic machinery and rhetoric can trump deep-seated religious beliefs that conflict with Western notions of human rights and freedom. As a consequence, Obama had encouraged and legitimized Egypt’s Muslim Brothers. His Director of National Intelligence, James Clapper, called them “a very heterogeneous group, largely secular, which has eschewed violence and has decried Al Qaeda as a perversion of Islam,” an estimation contradicted by numerous statements by Muslim Brother spokesmen and spiritual advisors advocating shari’a law, promoting violent jihad against Islam’s enemies, and calling for the abrogation of the peace treaty with Israel. Regarding the treaty, Egypt’s intentions may be divined in a statement made by Morsi’s spokesman, who has declared, “Our capital won’t be Mecca or Medina, but Jerusalem, millions of shahids [martyrs] will march on the city.”

As for the possibilities of a liberal democracy taking root in Egypt, consider Morsi’s statement that “The day will come when the Sharia of the truth is put into effect,” and his pardoning of 25 convicted jihadist leaders.  Morsi has also called for the release of the “Blind Sheikh” Abdul Rahman, who masterminded the first World Trade Center bombing in 1993 that killed 6 people and wounded over a 1000. Just recently a consortium of jihadist outfits have threatened to burn down the American embassy in Cairo and take hostages from the survivors if Rahman and other terrorists held in the U.S. are not released. Morsi has also met with leaders of Hamas, the Muslim Brothers terrorist subsidiary that controls Gaza, and recently travelled to Tehran to forge closer relations with the mullahs’ genocidal regime. Meanwhile, violent assaults on Egypt’s Christian Copts continue, with over 100,000 having fled their homeland since the revolution began. Despite all these red Islamist flags, President Obama has invited Morsi to the White House in September 2012, and is negotiating $1 billion in debt relief for Egypt.

These 11 years of delusion, which have culminated in the Obama administration’s empowering a jihadist regime in the strategically important and most populous Arab state in the Middle East, are the consequence of our continuing failure to understand accurately the motivating religious ideology of the jihadists. We have perpetuated the empirically dubious claim that Muslims like the Ayatollah Khomeini or Osama bin Laden, revered as heroes across the Muslim world, had “highjacked” the noble “religion of peace.” Once again Thomas Friedman provides the best example of this sort of thinking: “Muslims have got to understand that a death cult has taken root in the bosom of their religion, feeding off it like a cancerous tumor.” Friedman’s simile, however, is false. Jihadism is not a diseased “tumor” in Islam, but a vital organ. Jihad is a core Islamic belief copiously documented in the Koran, hadiths, and theological writings, a belief that fueled Islam’s great conquests from the Atlantic to China.

In the coming years, we would do better to heed Sun Tzu’s injunction about knowing our enemy, instead of listening to the numerous apologists and propagandists who separate jihadism from Islam and whitewash the latter’s long history of supremacism, illiberalism, and violence. We need to take seriously the respected theologians and teachers like the Ayatollah Khomeini, the architect of the Iranian jihadist regime who once said, “Islam says: Kill all the unbelievers just as they would kill you all! . . . Islam says: Whatever good there is exists thanks to the sword and the shadow of the sword.” Substitute “nuclear weapons” for “sword” and you’ll see how grievous in the next decade will be the consequences of failing to take our enemy seriously when he tells us what he believes, and then shows us what he will do to honor that belief.

No, it is not 11 but near hundred years of the same mistake and ignorance: The mistake of denial of the uniqueness and superiority of our own Republic. The Republic founded and maintained by the unique people of the unique brand of the Judeo-Christian tradition not proper even to our neighbors on the same continent – never mind remote crapistans!

It is because of this ignorance, that we allowed our enemies to dissolve, erode, and destroy our uniqueness at our home, and to make us behave as dhimmis and appeasers both at home and abroad – http://www.resonoelusono.com/2008vs1917.htm

It is Saudis hands behind the 9/11 and behind our defeatist reaction on it: http://www.shoebat.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09

    • SCREW SOCIALISM

SOCIALISTS are behind the defeatist reaction to 9/11.

DEFEAT SOCIALISM and get America back on track.

    • Soloview

Not taking over Saudi Arabia immediately and imposing a democratic, secularist rule after 9/11 (a la Japan 1945) was the US second greatest strategic blunder. The greatest one was not doing it in response to Faisal's oil embargo in 1973.

      • http://www.resonoelusono.com/NaturalBornCitizen.htm Alexander Gofen

No, it is NOT what follows from my comment. The strategy of the nation building a la our own for the defeated enemy (as we did after 1945) is not applicable to ANY enemy. To think this way IS a strategic blunder.

Yes, our Republic (and the Western) society was objectively superior and unique, yet it is impossible to re-plant it in other places even for the neighboring nations on the same continent…

Islam is definitely not an enemy which can be transformed into our image. It ought not to be empowered by our oil trade with them in the first place. Yet after the 9/11, the most cheap and proper response was to nuke Mecca and Medina – the main enemy symbols, and that would be the end of war on "1.2 billions" of them. Just keep them far away in their crapistans. Alas, that window of opportunity was missed.

        • Soloview

I did not say my comments follow the logic of your argument. I appended my comments to yours because you quoted Wally Shoebat revealing piece on the involvement of some members of the Saudi family with al-Qaeda. Neither did I suggests nuking Mecca and Medina. They are important cultural treasures in Islam and we are not at war with the religion but with the idea of too much oil money in the hands of Islamic medieval primitives. The US had two great opportunities to be smart imperialists and take over control of the epicenter of a global scourge. No-one would have peeped a word if the Marines entered Riadh in Seprtember 2001 and shut down the crazy Saudi regime (not that I believe that the whole family was involved). That would have shut down the money pipe to Pakistan's ISI rogues and al-Qaeda and Taliban. Of course, telling yourself that it is impossible to civilize savages will not get the job done. If you enter the world stage with that sort of mindset you'll end up wasting tens of thousands of American lives and waste a trillion dollars in losing two wars just to prove you have been right all along.

          • http://www.resonoelusono.com/NaturalBornCitizen.htm Alexander Gofen

OK, our positions appear to be close (yet not identical). Just as you, I am ABSOLUTELY AGAINST wasting even one American life for strategic blunders, such as attempts to civilize savages. Not to mention that the job of military is to defeat the enemy (remotely, if possible) rather than to civilize them.

I disagree that entering Riadh in 2001 and ridding of all Saudis would achieve any goal. To replace them with whom? There is no such thing like "moderate islam" or "the West friendly islam" in the entire world. So just keep them contained far away where they are. However first we ought to teach them a lesson for the 9/11 by nuking Mecca and Medina – exactly because they are symbols of the enemy ideology, the "cultural treasures in Islam". And we ARE at war with this "religion" – at least because islam IS at war with us.

          • Drakken

You don't civilize savages, you simple eliminate them, enmasse if that is what it takes, in the end our western civilization must survive, theirs must perish, it really is that simple.

  • rubiconcrest

Thank you Bruce for your timely article. Below is a letter I have written to my sons on this day…
    Dear Sons:
Today is the anniversary of 9/11. It is a solemn day for me. 9/11 does not mean the same thing to you because you were both so young. You are old enough now. It is critical that you both understand the significance of this act of Islamic Jihad against the USA. It was not the first.

The first acts of Jihad occurred in the early days of our Republic. As a result of attacks on our merchant ships President Jefferson commissioned the first naval ships be built. Our navy began as a response to Islamic Jihad piracy! There were groups of Marines on the ships sent to the Mediterranean. The words of the Marine anthem '…to the shores of Tripoli…' derive from the Marine action in 'Tripoli', Lybia today. Nor was 9/11 the first Jihad attack in the history of the world.

Islamic Jihad has been going on ever since Mohammad moved from Mecca to Medina and preached Jihad as a way to spread the faith. After years in Mecca Mohammad had 100 followers or so. After 23 years of Jihad in Medina he had 100,000. Violence worked much better than non violence! It is estimated that since it's beginning Islamic Jihad has killed 270 million people*. * <a href="http://(http://www.politicalislam.com/tears/pages/tears-of-jihad/)” target=”_blank”>(http://www.politicalislam.com/tears/pages/tears-of-jihad/)

In modern times, after the first world war, there was a movement to return to traditional Islam. The movement is financed today chiefly through oil revenues which is used to build mosques, the training of conservative preachers and general financial support. The Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, the state of Iran and others have significant influence as well. It is estimated that 80% of mosques built in the USA have been financed by Saudi Arabia. The MB credo says it all "….Jihad is our way; and death for the sake of Allah is the highest of our aspirations."

Muslim Brotherhood front groups operate openly in the USA today. Two affiliated influential groups in the USA are CAIR (Council on American Islamic Relations) and the MSA (Muslim Student Assoc.) There are dozens of others.

Why am I telling you all this? I am because I want you to realize that Islam is still on the march. Two costly wars in the last decade have not dulled the movement. It is one of the most dangerous long term threats to the stability of this country and other democratic nations. You should be aware of it along with the other major issues facing this country. But as far as Islam is concerned any politician etc… who says 'Islam is Peace' does not know what he is talking about.

Take a few moments today to recall the 9/11 attack. Pledge to honor the victims by remembering who killed them and why. Honor them by being aware of this threat to your freedom. Understand that is ongoing. You have a responsibility as citizens to be aware of this issue and vote into office those who are knowledgeable and have plans to stop this movement.

Mitt Romney has said that spending billions to kill Osama Bin Laden was not as important as having a national strategy with other free nations to deal with the problem. He believes killing the violent Jihadist's alone does not stop the movement, I agree.

One reason I support Mitt Romney is that he plans to establish a long-term counter-jihad strategy. No single politician, however, can solve the problem. We the people must demand it.

    Love,
    Dad

Well said and thank you it needed to be said over and over again until the American people hear it. Although they have ears and do not hear maybe if the din is loud enough and said often enough it will get through.

Unfortunately half the country is in a deluded state of mind that dulls their hearing the truth in any form.

    • Jossi

Well said. It is exactly as you wrote to your sons. I hope many people will read and understand the very excellent website you propose. I knew about this website since a long time. (politicalislam) It has to be said and repeated over and over, the great majority of people don't know how islam functions and thinks. Even worse, in today's PC climate, it is impossible to inform on a broad spectrum what islam really is. And our enemy has a PhD in Deceiving.

We have Homeland Security because of muslims. Muslims are vermin and as such need to be eradicated. A person CHOOSES to be a muslim just like they CHOOSE to be a Nazi. What kind of sick, twisted imbecile would choose this toxic totalitarian ideology as their guide in life? The muslims need to get out of America. You do not belong here, and you are not wanted here. Virtually all kaffir hate your religion and you.

Officially, Islam has been at war with the rest of the world for 1400 years. In practice, there have been times when Islamic countries were civilized and centers of science. In 1006, Iraqi scientists saw and described a supernova. http://adsabs.harvard.edu/full/1965AJ…..70..105…
Today, Islam has reverted to its most violent and anti-intellectual stage in history. That is because of anti-Zionism, the most powerful polical force on earth today. Those who are obsessed with the need to destroy Israel forget about reality and their own interests.

As my life has unfolded I have noticed an ongoing and increasing hostility toward Christianity for its times of bad behavior. Chrisitianity is treated as a force for evil by the critics. Many of those same critics have commented on Islamic militancy. With regard to the Muslims, those critics are ever-scrupulous to draw a distinction between Muslims who are moderate and Muslims who are radical. Personally, I haven't seen much of that distinction between Muslims; perhaps I'm too cynical, but to me there seem to be Muslims who are wreaking as much indiscriminate havoc as they can and Muslims who are keeping quiet as they wait to see which way the wind is going to wind up blowing. Christians, on the other hand, are always and collectively wrong no matter what to the critics.

The critics don't even seem to have noticed that the great evil Crusades were defensive maneuvers to counter Islamic imperialism, but I suppose that doesn't matter.

Isam pretends to be about honor, and yet does dispicable acts of violence against innocent people…This religion treats the women less than dogs, and you expect people to accept you into a peaceful and civilized society where life, family, and unity matters, not jihad, death, and violence. What does it say about a race that continually repeats the mistakes of the ancestors who never learn from their mistakes? Do you ever realize that your people deserve good things..not continual unrest, and poverty which violence and a Dictatorial government brings. Its about time to realize that people helping people, enabling work and creating jobs, education, worship, and free trade, make the world a better place. Why don't you strive for happiness, peace, and prosperity? (Be Constructive instead of Destructive) To all the brave heroes and the Victims of 911..We salute you, and remember you with honor. It is better to stand for Freedom than Tyranny!

  • Indioviejo

I am not a Jew. Nothing you say matters, as your opinion comes from congenital stupidity. But this I can say, I have, since I was a small boy, learned about Islam because I am interested in history, and the Crusades were romantic novels to me at the time. The more I learned about Islam, the more I hate the "sin" called Islam. I have done my best to pass it on to every child I have taught in my now long life. I unconditionally support Israel in its struggle to remain an exemplary nation to the world, and I applaud their fight against the satanic horde that surrounds them. So let us have a larger Israel and may it become the dominant power in the Mediterranean.

The left doesn't realize a bunch of things. First of all, fascism is a far left-wing ideology. In fact fascism is in many ways similar to communism. Both hate capitalism and love socialism and totalitarianism. The chief difference between the two ideologies is the concept of nationalism vs. internationalism. Second, the United States is not an imperialist power nor a fascist power. The United States is a tolerant, democratic country that respects the rule of law. America isn't perfect (no country is perfect), but it is a much better place to be in than its enemies like Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Zimbabwe and other despotic regimes. America's enemies are the fascist, imperialist power which like to cause chaos, oppress their own people as well as oppress other people. There is no American "imperialism", but there is Russian imperialism, Chinese imperialism, Cuban imperialism, Venezuelan imperialism, Iranian imperialism, Sudanese imperialism, Communist imperialism and Islamist imperialism. The left despises America and its democratic freedoms so much that if the left were to live in the time of the American Revolution, they (the left) would have sided with King George III's Britain and the Loyalists. America has freed other countries from tyranny and terror, while its enemies like Cuba have imposed terror in other countries. America and its allies (Britain, Israel and the rest of the free world) need to confront and defeat the totalitarian imperialist (unholy alliance of the left and Islamists) threat that is trying to destroy democracy and impose Marxism and Sharia law. The United States and its allies are the democratic hope for freedom, democracy and stability in the world. God Bless America!

    • g_jochnowitz

Fascism and Marxism have a great deal in common. Hannah Arendt wrote about it in her THE ORIGINS OF TOTALITARIANISM. Both doctrines demand faith. Faith in bad by its very nature. We humans were designed to think and to ask questions. Islam is trying to teach the world what blind faith means. Nobody is learning. http://www.jochnowitz.net/Essays/JesMarx.html

I learned from Glenn Beck's documentary, Revolutionary Holocaust, that the color red Nazi Party flag in Germany was supposed to attract workers into the Nazi Party. Hence the term National-Socialism. Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union had a lot in common, that's for sure.

    • Ghostwriter

Thank you for saying that,Omar. For all our power,we're the least imperialist nation on the planet. It's long past time someone pointed that out.

      • Omar

You're welcome, Ghostwriter. You and I know the truth that America is not an imperialist country. America is a democratic country. The closest imperialist power to us, in terms of geographical distance, is Communist Cuba. That imperialist power has been around for over a half-century and has been causing destruction for all that time. Along with Venezuelan imperialism, Cuban imperialism has been trying to destroy democracy in Latin America for a long time. Both imperial powers have made alliances with Islamist imperialism. It is up to America and its allies to stop the unholy alliance and its imperialist ambitions.

The reason for the "willful ignorance" – that is not being able to name our enemy – comes from disbelief and denial. People who are members of any religion other than Is-lam are just unable to believe that any religion can be evil simply because their religion teaches the opposite of evil. They were taught – we are our brothers keeper – that sort of thing. Therefore they just can't believe the teachings of Is-lam. . But what other religion or culture teaches its children to shun, hate and kill outsiders? ( continued)

  • Spider

    (cont)
The fact is only Is-lam does.. The same sort of disbelief came from Jews even as they were being rounded up for the camps, "They won't kill us, this is the 20th century, the Germans are too civilized to do that" But the time will come when even these "disbelievers" will have to face reality because this war will come knocking on or door again soon. Another thing is that our leaders just don't want to say who we are actually at war with so as not to "Tick them off" and promote more attacks. But this in itself says a lot about what we are dealing with here in the west and it won't go away by just sugar coating everything.

A couple of things are clear from this tapestry of lies. One is that Andrew McCarthy is the new Charlie McCarthy at Frontpage. The other is that people from the classics department think they are also from the International Affairs department. What a hokey thesis, that all of our current foreign policy is a result of the Democrats. The only viable angle in the article is that Muslims are Muslim and they are motivated by Islam. There's no arguing with that gem. It still doesn't translate into a bunch of Rip Van Winkles asleep at the US helm for decades while a stealth jihad rises and conquers us. That's political fantasy writing not in keeping with Mr. Thornton's area of expertise.

We now live in an nuclear age where religious beliefs that teach destruction is God's will has become extremely dangerous. So what's your solution, Mr. Thornton? Wage another holocaust? I'm waiting with bated breath to hear your answer. Your claims here are beyond amateurish.

I happen to fit in with western conservatism/libertarianism not in spite of my Muslim faith, but BECAUSE of it. I'm more pro-Israel than pro-Palestinian BECAUSE of my Muslim faith and Islamic principles, and precedent going all the way back to Muhammad. But there seems to be no room for such a line of thinking except for deceptive purposes, according to your views on Islam.

Your ilk is at it again. German Nazis rode the backs of mainline German conservatives, and then sidelined them once they got into power. You are as much a threat to America in general and the conservative/libertarian movement in particular, just as the commies and the Jihadis are to America. The American conservative/libertarian movement needs to be rid of crypto-Nazi pseudo-intellectuals before it can attain victory in this blessed land, or we'll all be in more trouble…and we're already in enough trouble with what we have now.

    @g_jochnowitz,

"Islam has reverted to its most violent and anti-intellectual stage in history."

A minor quibble with your post g. I have taught Arab students from the middle-east seeking degrees in computer science, IT, and telecom, etc.

These young men were not "anti-intellectual" – they were learning to read. (In my classes they were learning to read math.) These men openly admitted their families were illiterate.

What is happening is no conspiracy theory – these muslims are learning how to read, and they are reading their founding documents. Learning their "faith" is what radicalizes them.

When a Christian learns his faith, he shocks the world. When a Christian lives up to his faith, the world denies Jesus, and claims he just wanted the fame, glory or money. (Like M. Theresa…)

When a Muslim learns his faith, the world is shocked. When a Muslim lives up to his faith, the world blames anyone and everyone except their profit. (Like Osama …)

We are living through a Revival of Islam because of the oil wealth, technology, and literacy.

The real problem is not Islam specifically but religion in general. It is surely time for humankind to find true enlightenment in the knowledge that there is no validity in religion. There are no supernatural creators to worship, no "True Paths" to follow, all religions are founded upon obfuscation and deception. Religions serve only to sow divisions among the population. It is up to us, as Humanity, to find the best way through life and towards the continued survival of ourselves and all other life on our planet. God, any god, is an illusion created from our minds and it is time we rose above the folly of our own self-deception.
