The Final Countdown: Israel vs. Iran

Pages: 1 2

The 33-year farce of Western appeasement of Iran may be reaching its denouement. For the last few months, the pace of events have quickened as the West sanctions and threatens, and Iran blusters about closing the Strait of Hormuz, cutting off oil to Europe, and unleashing its terrorist proxies. Just last week Iran’s “Supreme Leader” Ayatollah Ali Khamenei subtly suggested that Iran would step up its already considerable support of terrorist outfits targeting Israel and the U.S.: “From now on, in any place, if any nation or any group confronts the Zionist regime, we will endorse and we will help. We have no fear expressing this.” Indulging traditional Islamic anti-Semitic language, Khamenei said Israel was a “cancerous tumor that should be cut and will be cut,” and claimed that the U.S. would suffer defeat and damage its regional prestige if it decides to use military force to stop the country’s nuclear program.

Meanwhile, Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta has said there was a “strong likelihood” that Israel would attack Iran in April, May, or June of this year, a supposition reinforced by French President Nicolas Sarkozy. And Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak said in his remarks at the Herzilya Conference that Iran’s “military nuclear program is steadily nearing ripeness and is about to enter the ‘immunity zone.’ From that point on, the Iranian regime will be able to act to complete the program, with no effective disturbance and a time that is convenient for it.” The backdrop of this war of words is the West’s imposition of yet more sanctions, while the Iranian regime once again rope-a-dopes the International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors, and rumors of American troop concentrations in the region abound.

A constant in all this the diplomatic fencing is the threat of military action by Israel, along with the rumors surrounding such an event and speculations about the extent of Israel’s military capabilities. More important, however, is the unsavory way the Obama administration is using the threat of Israeli military action to influence Iranian behavior, at the same time it positions itself to avoid any responsibility for an attack. Thus Panetta publicly has been warning Israel against attacking, listing all the “unintended consequences” that would follow, at the same time the U.S. demands that Israel do nothing without alerting the United States in advance. However, despite these public warnings to Israel, it has long been clear that the administration’s diplomatic efforts have all been underwritten by the implicit threat that Israel will take unilateral military action. So it is that Israel is made the Dirty Harry of the Middle East, her actions decried by Western nations too cowardly to do what they know needs to be done, as in 1981, when Israel destroyed Iraq’s Osirak atomic reactor only to be condemned by the United States.

For make no mistake, Iran cannot be allowed to succeed in manufacturing nuclear weapons, or even achieving “nuclear latency,” the ability rapidly to produce them when needed. Such armaments in the hands of an Iranian regime besotted with apocalyptic Twelver Shi’ism and religiously sanctioned Jew-hatred would radically reconfigure the Middle East, sparking nuclear proliferation in the region and endangering not just Israel, but a large portion of the world’s oil supply. Yet on her own, Israel can at best delay Iran’s progress for at best three to five years. Apart from the logistical challenges of such a complex attack, nuclear production facilities in Iran have been dispersed into 17 known sites, many of which have been moved deep underground into fortified bunkers and tunnels.

The fallout of such an attack, moreover, could hit Israel hard. By Israeli estimations, Iran’s proxy Hezbollah has stockpiled in Lebanon 50,000 missiles, which can reach every corner of Israel. Following the fall of Mubarak and the ascendancy of the Muslim Brothers, the southern border with Egypt is no longer secure, thus providing an avenue for Hamas terrorist attacks. A beleaguered Bashar al Assad in Syria could distract attention from his slaughter of Syrians by attacking Israel in the Golan. Although the United States has said it would defend Israel in these circumstances, it is not certain how reliable that pledge is in an election year, with a U.S. president who already has shown by his actions a marked dislike for Israel. After all, this is a president who counts Turkey’s Recep Erdogan as one of his closest international buddies, despite Turkey’s naked support for the genocidal Hamas, but who publicly disparages Israeli Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu. Certainly, Israel would find little sympathy and support in the U.N. or the E.U. after an attack on Iran.

I fear Iran wants to try at being the Nazi Germany of the 21st century. If they dare to launch a serious terror attack or even a military attack on North American soil, they will have to suffer retaliation, otherwise they will be emboldened and may try more aggressive actions, maybe even an invasion should they acquire the resources to do so.

As before, Israel will be in the same position as Britain during WWII: The last bulwark against full conquest of the Middle East by Shia-fundamentalist Iraq.

      Are you high?

Let's cut back out military some more Barack!! Yeah that's the ticket!!

    • fatboy91

fellow, so far Israel has done that, don't be absurd, the wall, the segregation, checkpoints, sound familiar? the American and western public is so misguided, I'm afraid we might just go to war for that, drag every young man into war for what, OIL and world domination. and would you recognize a state's right to exist if it had committed all those horrific crimes with Arabs in the name of terrorism. Israel is a tiny nation lets not forget that too, well equipped with us weapons, but small.

    • Cristian

Israel should be blown off the map most of our problems come from them. They deserve it and USA shouldn't help we have helped to long and we only get crap in return. Also we don't have the money and the time to get involved in another war.

  • David M

I as an Iranian citizen (unfortunately) I agree that Iran (although backward) is Germany 1938. Iran has become world's # 1 terrorist land and openly advocates the destruction of Israel – the only democracy in the Middle East – and killing its citizens. Iran has given Israel every right to defend itself by all means. Iran has become a case study how Islam, Nazism and Communism are the same ideology with different names. There are many Iranians who despise Islam and there are many who should be considered as the enemy of every thing that is good and human. It is like 1938 and it is time to act now.

    • aspacia

I hope you are not currently living in Iran.

  • crackerjack

    Let's be realistic :

Israel can drop a few random bombs and then run for the cover of the UN and the West. But takeing out Iran's nuclear industrie for good, would be a major operation for a large alliance, destruction of Iran's air capabilities, invasion of strategic regions including Hormus and occupation.

This is just not going to happen. Certainly not on the basis of another "preemption" theory, while IAEA inspectors are still on the ground and without full support from Russia and Turkey.

Let's face it. The Middeast had to learn to live with Israeli nukes. Israel must now learn to live with Middeast nukes.

    • HermitLion

"Run for the cover of the UN and the west"
I don't know what stuff you inhale/ingest/inject yourself with on a daily basis, but it must be very powerful. Watch out for the Judaphobia that comes after- oh, too late.

    • davarino

Please be realistic. Israel has not threatened to nuke anybody else in the region, Iran has. The middle east has learned to live with a nuclear israel because they dont feel threatened. Tell me how, in your deranged mind, do you expect israel to learn to live with a nuclear iran?

    • aspacia

Israel is not a signatory of the of the Nuclear Proliferation Treaty, Iran is. Israel has not threatened to massacre Iran and all its people, Iran has.

There is a huge difference between Iran and Israel having nukes.

    • jacob

So in yoiur educated mind, Israel will run for cover to the UN ???
Have you the brains to be a plain idiot or what ??
When has Israel gotten an ounce of smpathy from the rotten United Nations ?
When Israel retaliated against a launching site of the thousands of rockets
fired on it since HAMAS took over GAZA, the only thing UN and the EU did was
to condemn it for using 'DISPROPORTIONATE MEANS"….
Imagine what would have happened if ISRAEL would have repaid in kind ! !
But I guess Israel should have bombed long ago the hell out of IRAN's oil
fields with "dirty bombs" so not a drop of oil could be drawn for the next 20
That would have been the end and still can be the end of the regime JIMMY
WHO helped establish as after all, American politicians are so smart, so
shrewd, it is impossible to tell where the sage ends and the fool begins…

      • macdaddy

It goes even deeper than that. Let's not forget that Israel suspended their action against Lebanon because the UN resolution committed Lebanon from re-supplying and the UN was supposed to ensure this. Well, that did not go very well. Lebanon is apparently armed to the teeth with missiles in every 10th home near their southern border. This is par for the course for the UN. Many other examples of duplicitous, immoral behavior towards Israel. But you never hear a word about these things from media other than so-called right wing outlets.

    • Eliahou

crackerjack : I guess you would to tell "Israel must now learn to DIE with Middeast nukes" an not to live with them. Because Israel never threat other Middeast lands, never dreamt about and call to their destruction and genocide, but Middeast lands did so many times to Israel. So if they have nukes, they'll use them against Israel.

So what you are saying, crackerjack, is that Israel shall die. Nothing else. You'll certainly be sad but it won't.

    • carol

It is the arab countries that have always run for cover to the UN. Israel has always been forced to stop and negotiate once the UN sees that they are winning. Do some research and learn from history. If Israel is attacked again they should go all out and do to their attackers what the allies did to Dresden and we did to Tokyo.

  • Maher

Arabs, especially those in the Gulf are deadly scared. Remember the Saudi king Abdullah asking the US “to cut the snake’s head”? In a recent security conference held in Bahrain they don’t even mentioned Israel… and the Arab diplomats are interested only in Iran (State Department source). They are just hiding behind Israel. The very day Iran announced its nuclear program, the Saudis, Egypt and Jordan stated that they need one because Israel has one. Pure hypocrisy, Israel has nukes since 1957. The Saudis asked Russia to end the nuclear cooperation with Iran and put 2O $bn on the table to buy Russian weapons. Besides, the Saudis financed and control the Pakistani bomb.
I don’t understand all this fuss. Didn’t Ahmadinejad say that the bomb is un-islamic?

    • aspacia

JackJob is an Apopolyptic idiot who will probably attack Israel, and I have never seen any documentation that he said the bomb is unIslamic.

  • Jihn Saunders-Smith

Israel gets blamed for everything in the Arab/muslim world and in the West anyway so what has it got to lose?

However, an attack on Iran will unite the Sunnis and Shiats – what we should be doing is dividing them.

    • ziontruth

"Israel gets blamed for everything in the Arab/muslim world and in the West anyway so what has it got to lose?"

Good stuff, I like that sort of thinking. Damned if you do, damned if you don't? That means you can do anything you want!

"However, an attack on Iran will unite the Sunnis and Shiats…"

They already see eye to eye on the duty of jihad against the non-Muslims. Their spat is about other things. Sunni Hamas and Shia Hezbollah are allied against the Jewish State; they are at peace with each other by lack of physical proximity (the former are in Gaza, the latter in Lebanon).

"…what we should be doing is dividing them."

Should be easy—just spread a few rumors, we know how ready the Muslims are to believe any wild rumor. That said, dividing them only slows them down a bit, so it's no substitute for physically relocating their troops (every Muslim living in infidels' vicinity).

  • WilliamJamesWard

There would be no support from the UN after and Israeli attack? There is none now
so what difference can it make. Islam understands and respects one thing, force.
What would really lay the Mullahs to rest would be if Israel used atomic bombs on
the Iranean nuclear facilities and bunker busters on their houses. Without ending
the reign of the Mullah lunatics evil will continue to poor out of Iran……….William

    • MalcStPb

William, I totally agree – the only thing that Arabs understand is overwhelming force. If you debate, discuss or negotiate they see this as pathetic weakness. Let Israel hit them hard, now! And, when they retaliate then the US and NATO should get involved and blast Iran back into the Stone Age. If Iran wants to indulge in nonsense anti-Semetic Islamic rhetoric so what, ignore them – but if they do attack Israel then it is Iran that should be bombed and devastated. A clear deterrent is needed, if they act it must be clear that Iran's existence is doomed.

  • Maher

Behold the agenda of the New World Order (better defined as: the old-world satanic-agenda). And to see the paycheck-hungry puppets in government, business & news media serving these devilish elitists who fabricate all this rubbish against Iran because of their insatiable lust for power. It has nothing to do with Iran being a threat. They are as much of a threat as Iraq proved to be. Wake up, people! You’re being played the fool and led to say 'amen' to a lie. Don’t believe me?

Haven’t you heard the fact that the reason Iraq invaded Kuwait was because American oil companies were drilling horizontally into Iraq and stealing their oil! Any oilman over there will give testimony to this! Our leaders and Israel knew this corporate rip off of a nation’s resources and did nothing to stop it.

How many more millions have to die for these satanists? How many more American boys have to lay down their lives for these insatiably greedy CEOs' Christmas bonuses and early retirement at tax payer expense? How many presidents do we have to elect who never put their lives in harms way for anyone and yet don’t bat an eye to send our boys to an early grave? For what? Oh, American security, riiight. Well, look where we are: does America look financially stable and productive to you? Do you see our children and grand children having a ‘bright future?’

By 2007 nearly 700,000 Iraqi civilians died according to Johns Hopkins' epidemiologists—while America gets flushed down the toilet for these murdering, lying, thieving elitists who are taking our trillions and investing in China and India (for the new slave labor and blue collar jobs). But one day, GOD'S vengeance will repay these Talmudic Jews & Apostate Christians who deceive & betray, along with all who stand with them willingly turning a blind eye to the evils of this world for a paycheck!

    • ziontruth

      "…these Talmudic Jews…"

Here's another problem: John Hopkins "epidemiologists" have been proven to use rigged statistical model to cook its '700K' number. But Gary is the last to find out, unless he is an "epidemiologist" himself.

      • traeh

And yet another problem: If you look at the website, which is a lefty site against the war in Iraq, they compiled reports on all the civilian deaths. But if you look at the find print of each incident of a civilian casualty, it turns out that literally more than 99% of the civilian deaths in Iraq were caused not by the U.S. and allies, but by jihadists blowing themselves up in crowded markets and Shia and Sunni massacring each other. Over 99%!

To all those complaining that Israel did not sign the non-proliferation of nuclear

I will say that, if and when it is true that Israel does have nuclear weaponry, it is
most assuredly to be used ONLY as a last resource because what happened at MASSADA and what happened at the HOLOCAUST, WILL NEVER AGAIN BE

Now let all those supergeniuses, starting with our leaders, imagine a world at
the mercy of a nucler IRAN and above all, its leadership….! ! !

No matter what happens; ISRAEL will prevail as in all the other wars because GOD is their victor………..Obama and Soros are both working to delegitimize Israel; but they will fail.

  • mrbean

Muslims have chosen the rules of the game. Jews should let them know in no uncertain terms what "Never Again" means. The Muslim jihadists are motivated by the core principles of Islam with the goal of converting, killing, or subjugating all non-Muslims. Unfortunately, too many non-Muslims have reverted to a pre-9/11 mentality and do not see the necessity of an offensive war with the Jihadists, or of a defensive war at home. All of us as non-Muslims are going to have to decide to fight for our cultures, freedoms, and values or we are going to lose them. It is our killer instincts which must be harnessed if we expect to survive in a war with the Jihadists. Our weapons are only tools. It is a hard heart that kills. If our killer instincts are not clean and strong we will hesitate at the moment of truth. We will not kill. We will become dead Americans and dead Jews. And then we all will be in a world of trouble. Why? Because there are a billion Muslims and on a few million of us who will actually fight! Do you understand?

    • John

You are 100% right! But 100 years of prosperity have nearly destroyed our Heart. (Something that has happened repeatedly in the past.) How in hell do you motivate 'human gelatin'?

For the Jews, a world without Israel is no world at all. Obama couldn't care less. This attitude will cost the USA dearly and leave the USA with nuclear egg on it's face and a possible nuclear devasted Western United States and another Pearl Harbour decision on it's hands.Get rid of Obama as quickly as possible. He has already set the scene of blame for the world's problems on Israel if Israel attacks Iran unilaterally.
A world without Iran is the world's first prize even with the projected fall-out if Israel attacks Iran. To accept Iran as a world nuclear power is suicde for the Jews and the USA.
The right decision must be made soon before the world order is changed for the worse forever.

  • Texasron

The Mullahs running Iran need to be eliminated. They, I'm sure, would like that since it would make them martyrs. The rest of its citizens could then live in peace.

  • ObamaYoMoma

The notion that the West must wait until the very last minute and until all options have been exhausted first before acting is utterly insane. Indeed, thanks to that idiotic notion, Iran is far more powerful militarily than it was just a few years ago and it also leaves no room for error. It also makes us appear to be incredibly weak in the eyes of our Islamic enemies, especially since Iran has been killing Americans in Iraq and Afghanistan with impunity for years.

Anyway, if Iran gets nukes with impunity, it will inevitably become far more belligerent and aggressive, which will cause oil prices to skyrocket permanently as a result. Also, the jointly co-owned Saudi and Pakistani massive nuclear weapons arsenal sitting in Pakistan will be proliferated virtually overnight throughout the Sunni Islamic world to counter the nuclear armed Iranians, further ratcheting up oil prices as tensions continue to climb. Hence, not only will our economy inevitably be destroyed by sky high oil prices, but the Islamic world – with its Islamic imperative to make the world supreme for Islam – will become armed to the teeth with nuclear weapons.

Unless the world has a death wish, it better find the courage somewhere to stop Iran before it is too late!

  • mrbean

Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said the opportunity must not be lost to remove “this corrupting material. It is a “‘jurisprudential justification” to kill all the Jews and annihilate Israel, and in that, the Islamic government of Iran must take the helm.” The article, written by Alireza Forghani, an analyst and a strategy specialist in Khamenei’s camp, now is being run on most state-owned sites, including the Revolutionary Guards’ Fars News Agency, showing that the regime endorses this doctrine. Attack Iran now! Muslims have chosen the rules of the game. Jews should let them know in no uncertain terms what "Never Again" means.

The truth is this Nuke issue won't go away even if Iran & Syria are nullified. The real issue is Islamists cannot be allowed to rule people, countries or the earth's resources: 57 [all of them] states manifest this truth. The real truth is this terrible situation is caused by Europe: Britain installed these regimes; Europe fostered them. The corruption of the Balfour Mandate is the worst Post-W.W.II crime This crime was repeated with the creation of Pakistan to please the Arab regimes. The scene in Palestine and India are eerily similar.

The best thing for Muslims is to not have the Islamic countries ruled by Islamists.

  • BUTSeriously

Let's help Muslims. Remove Islamic dictators from ruling peoples, lands and earthly resources. We see what resulted when Britain allocated the Middle-East to 22 Islamic rulers from one family, illegally and in secret – for 30 barrels of oil. There is no alternative to the removal of Islamict combinations of religion and state, except more of the same.

I wish you were right, but I don't think you are. The situation is not static. Things are not what they were thirty years ago. And as time goes by, accelerating technological progress means scientists ever more quickly dream up ever more varieties of ever more powerful, ever more deadly, ever cheaper, ever more accessible WMD. We are perhaps not far from a time when not just puny rogue nations, like North Korea, have WMD. But small groups with limited technical and financial resources may be able to get or make WMD of one sort or another. I'm not talking necessarily about atomic weapons.

That doesn't mean we shouldn't strike Iran, however. But it does complicate the calculus by which we decide the pros and cons. And it presents a much huger question. How are we going to manage the WMD proliferation that seems to be coming in the near future, due to technological advances?
