The NYT Shilling Again for Leftwing Murderers

David Horowitz was one of the founders of the New Left in the 1960s and an editor of its largest magazine, Ramparts. He is the author, with Peter Collier, of three best selling dynastic biographies: The Rockefellers: An American Dynasty (1976); The Kennedys: An American Dream (1984); and The Fords: An American Epic (1987). Looking back in anger at their days in the New Left, he and Collier wrote Destructive Generation (1989), a chronicle of their second thoughts about the 60s that has been compared to Whittaker Chambers’ Witness and other classic works documenting a break from totalitarianism. Horowitz examined this subject more closely in Radical Son (1996), a memoir tracing his odyssey from “red-diaper baby” to conservative activist that George Gilder described as “the first great autobiography of his generation.” His latest book is Take No Prisoners: The Battle Plan for Defeating the Left (Regnery Publishing).

The New York Times, which played a key role in getting convicted and unrepentant murderer Kathy Boudin a parole, has now published a similar massive plea posing as a news story for her accomplice, Judy Clark. The piece is maliciously titled “The Radical Transformation of Judy Clark” as though Clark, understanding the heinous nature of her crime which left 9 children fatherless, is prepared to renounce the life that led to it. Nothing could be further from the truth. Of course Clark is in her sixties now and regrets her separation from the infant she abandoned to commit the crime (her last crime not her only crime). Her daughter  is now 31 and she would obviously like to be able to share the kind of life with her that her victims cannot share with their dead fathers. And, of course, being old and gray, she no longer thinks Amerikkka is on the brink of a violent revolution and liberation. Unlike Boudin, moreover, she does seem to have given some thought to the enormity  of what she did to those nine fatherless children. But that said, there is no indication that her parole plea is anything but self-serving, or that she has turned her back on the progressive terrorists — Boudin, Bill Ayers and Bernadine Dohrn among them — who were her comrades-in-arms through the twelve years of armed warfare she conducted against her country and its citizens, which left more than a handful of people dead.

To begin with, Clark and her mouthpiece at the Times, present the culprit as an absent-minded accomplice to the one crime for which she was convicted, the Brinks robbery in Nyack NY in 1981. According to Clark,  her participation  was an “obligation” — the fulfillment of a promise she had made to participate as a getaway driver in a robbery she thought would never take place. This is baloney. Clark was part of a group that called itself “The Family,” which  was a working alliance between the Black Liberation Army and the May 19th Communist Movement (so-named in part to commemorate the day the BLA murdered a black and white police team in New York for no reason other than that they were a black and white officer working together).

The May 19 gang was mainly women (among them Boudin, Clark and Susan Rosenberg) who served as the getaway team for the BLA in a string of bank robberies in which people were killed. One attempted assassination of  a New York judge was unsuccessful. All these crimes were committed in the name of the revolution, which in the perverse eyes of progressives like Judy Clark, justified them. The Family had also sprung a cold-blooded killer — Assata Shakur — from federal prison. Clark’s role in the May 19th organization was not the beginning of her criminal career but its fulfillment. Previously she had spent 7 years as one of the most fanatical members of the Weather Underground, helping to conduct many bombings and kill at least three people, and probably also two police officers whose deaths are still under investigation.

A guilty person who understands their guilt and has genuine remorse begins by accepting responsibility for what they did and for all they did — and not pretending (as Clark does in this article) that they became a violent radical only after they were arrested as a result of guilt for not having been revolutionary enough. Or that their participation in the one crime they were apprehended for was actually the result of inattention or some other excusable offense.

Far more important, a truly remorseful terrorist will feel obligated to turn his back on his fellow terrorists and their supporters and do the innocent a service by revealing what they know, and who their networks are, and what they actually did — not just what they got caught doing. This kind of truth-telling is an authentic form of atonement and would protect others — and particularly young radicals just starting out who may become involved in criminal ventures just as Clark did when she was young and the tragedies she caused were still in front of her.

Update: Ron Radosh has a different take at Pajamas Media.

  • http://www.contextflexed.com Flipside

The court saw fit to give Clark a writ of habeas corpus in 2006 for unlawful detention. 9 prior arrests were dismissed or acquitted for Assata Shakur before the FBI was going to arrest her for having a broken taillight. Really, David, aren’t you ever going to stop trying to convict people in peacetime for their revolutionary actions in wartime decades ago? When does your kangaroo court close?

    • http://www.themadjewess.wordpress.com MAD JEWESS

Looks like you must have known Mr. Horowitz way back when. I find it comical that you leftists preach about the 'social justice', yet do not want an unrepentant LEFTIST murdererers to get their due process through Americas broken justice system, thanks to yourself and folk like you.

It was OK that Medgar Evers wife, Merlie Evers received HER justice, but this one is not OK.
      NO justice for this family..

If this was a white conservative man, you would be calling for his death.
And you 'people' hold the keys to our courts and wonder WHY nobody respects you.

So, heres the Q for you:
Are you now, or have you ever been a member of the Communist party?

Ah, yes, classic red-baiting. Just when you thought the Mad Jewess's post was going to end on a note of reason, instead – the ultimate zinger. When do we get to hear the 'walk like a duck' line? That would really be the nail in the coffin.

Daulette, you are wrong. I am not a leftist, I am a Constitutionalist, a libertarian and independent minded. Our Constitution was founded in Revolution and needs to go back to it periodically. I don’t support Tookie Williams, or Ward Churchil. It’s you Schactmanites that can’t decide if you are CPUSA or Zionists. It’s a fact that at one point in our history, the FBI went cuckoo and tried to kill or jail everyone who opposed racism and war in the US. The US government pushed its people to the brink of revolution. Back then David tried to capitalize on it. If he didn’t burn his hands on it, he may still have kept on capitalizing and turned into a Mark Rudd or Todd Gitlin. Instead, he is trying to jail Assata Shakur and keep acquitted people in prison. I think it’s fair to dispute Jim’s especially since he tried to set himself up as the unelected Kultur minister of the US.

Nice to meet you PAULETTE! You could sing Doo Wop in the Ron Paul band. I am Robert, but Flipside is my real name. You are off the deep end if you think libertarians are communists. Also I don’t subscribe to Noam Chomsky’s tepid form of dissidence.

          • FriendofGaryCooper

            But Liberty is not LICENSE.

          • http://www.contextflexed.com Flipside

Why are you flogging me with that bumper sticker? Locke's political "science" becomes a mere political philosophy where his "is" becomes an "ought." He says we are not at liberty to destroy ourselves. He is incorrect. If "Liberty is not license" as you keep intoning, we shall become, we have in fact become a nation not of liberties but of licenses, issues by the state. Are you making some mere point about citizens not having the right to despoil others of their property? We live in a state kleptocracy. Why are you trying to pin it on me?

          • FriendofGaryCooper

Yes, we have become a "nation of licenses" but look at the results. An out of control and unaccountable government; debt spiraling ever upward, to the point where it may never get under contol; open borders in the desert southwest that are a highway for criminals, terrorists, and drugs; inner cities where drug gangs rule; a 9% unemployment rate, that includes lost/destroyed jobs that may never come back; creeping Sharia law. I'm pinning this on you because you won't acknowledge these results. This saying is more than a bumper sticker, sir. In addition, since when do Locke's principles become "mere political philosophy?" These results cited above prove Locke's principles to be valid.

          • http://www.contextflexed.com Flipside

As you can see from the context within my statement, I DO NOT ENDORSE a "nation of licenses." Also, I am neither criminal, a terrorist, or a gangster, either, So I have to ask again, WHY are you pinning it on me? I also make the point again, that where an "is" becomes and "ought" we are no longer in analysis and observation, but in morality and philosophy, even if it is John Locke.

You are at a disadvantage in your rhetoric, Paulette, because although YOU are a Zionist, I am not a Nazi, a Communist, or a Chomsky supporter. A Nazi would say, Jews belong in a death camp. I don't believe that. A communist would say that the rich should be violently overthrown and have their property given to the poor. I don't believe that. A Chomskyite would be trying to make money by criticizing the apparatus that allows him to make money criticizing the apparatus. A Chomskyite supports the Jewish Lobby. I don't do those two things either. You are fighting some ghost in your head. I am simply an American, a Libertarian, and a Constitutionalist that is not a Zionist. Try that one on.

      the truth:
You are so filled with guilt over your treason against America, the country that gave you your free speech to desecrate her. The country that gave you the right to pursue life, and liberty, the liberty to make MONEY to be on your computer. the right to even assemble freely speaking in traitorous speeches…face it, there is *NO* redeeming qualities in you, NONE.
Being "Libertarian" does not excuse you. You were not a Libertarian as a younger person, you use it now, because anarchy suits you. And "Libertarian" is a polite way to say you are authoritarian.
      You are the plague.

"A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murderer is less to fear. The traitor is the plague."

He has both of his legs. For any pity being shown to this women is ludicrous. The families of her victims struggle every day. There is not such thing as closure for them. Agreed ron 110% . Here's an anectdotal story , that unfortunately IS NOT …it's dead asss true .I had a neighborhood pal I grew up with who in his late 20's[ in the 80's ]decided to get involved with drugs . Remember QUAALUDES ? W ell as "pally " made more money he got bolder as many do and caught the attention of DEA . They set up a buy , pally got busted and got 10 years .[ FEDERAL MANDATED SENTENCE ] On arrival at the big house ,he met another "recent arrival " , this guy got pissed off over a tv show , and killed his sister-in-law and her 11 yr old son . Pally did every last day of his 10yr sentence , whilst the double murderer was out in 7 yrs.1 mo.The legal system is broken .If we can have Federal mandates on drug related crimes why in the hell not for MURDER ? And yes , in the commission of a crime all parties involved are guilty of murder should it involve the murder of a victim , citizen or law enforcement .

Some states do in fact hold any accomplice in a murder , equally guilty of murder . Other states do not . We call California "lala land " but it is in fact one of those states which does . • NAHALKIDES

Radosh's column is thoughtful, but Horowitz has the better part of this argument. Radosh makes two mistakes: he considers her guilty of some offense less than murder because it wasn't her finger on the trigger, and he seems to believe that rehabilitation and/or repentance is somehow relevant.

Our law does not generally distinguish between those who actually pull the trigger and other co-conspirators who premeditated a felony that results in death (here armed robbery) and were involved in its commission, and for a very good reason – they share moral culpability for the offense of murder. Clark is guilty of murder, and must pay the penalty.

This brings us to the second point: justice requires retribution be inflicted on the criminal. Whether the criminal repents or not (and there is good reason to doubt it in this case, as Horowitz points out), or whether the criminal is rehabilitated or not, makes no difference. Our task in the criminal justice system must be to exact retribution. In the case of cold-blooded murder, that retribution must take the form of death or else life without parole. Clark took a life, morally, by assisting and abetting those who did the actual killing, and her own life must therefore be forfeit, if not by execution than by confinement in prison for life. Nothing less than that is justice.

The comments reflect perfectly the lunacy of this blog's author. What utter idiocy this man provokes in his followers! Bitter, right-wing crusader David Horowitz (who must still feel a tiny pang of guilt for recommending that very bookkeeper to the Black Panthers who was later murdered for discovering their financial discrepancies). Was the guilt too much to bear — or was your fanatic worship of the Black Panthers then just the opposite pole of your rabid anti-left nonsense now. You. Make. Me. Sick. And I do believe if you were at all honest, you'd make yourself sick too.
