Egypt Erupts as Muslim Brotherhood Seizes Power

Egypt’s President Mohamed Morsi can at least get a prize for brazenness. Just last Wednesday he was being praised by the Obama administration for his “practical” role in working out a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. “This was somebody focused on solving problems,” a “senior administration official” admiringly told the New York Times.

The very next day, Thursday, Morsi engaged in a different kind of “problem solving”—taking steps to steamroll the opposition and move a big step closer to totalitarian rule for himself and his Muslim Brotherhood.

A decree issued by Morsi on that day shields his decisions from judicial review and effectively puts him beyond the law. It gives the same kind of protection to the lower house of parliament—which is dominated by Islamists who are writing Egypt’s new constitution and had been facing legal challenges; and similarly insulates the Islamist-controlled upper house of parliament.

Morsi also ordered retrials of officials from the previous Mubarak regime who were charged with violence in putting down the 2011 Tahrir Square-centered rebellion—including the 84-year-old Mubarak himself, even though he was already sentenced to life in prison.

Since Egyptians learned of the decree on Friday morning, the country has erupted in a way not seen since the 2011 revolt itself.

On Friday violent protests rocked Cairo, Alexandria, Port Said, and Suez. By Saturday Egypt’s judicial establishment was in an uproar. Reuters reported that “the Judges’ Club, a body representing judges across Egypt, called for a strike during a meeting interrupted with chants demanding the ‘downfall of the regime’ – the rallying cry in the uprising that toppled Hosni Mubarak last year….”

Opposition leader Mohamed ElBaradei called Morsi a “dictator impos[ing] the most oppressive, abhorrent measures” and said he was “waiting to see, I hope soon, a very strong statement of condemnation by the U.S., by Europe and by everybody who really cares about human dignity.”

State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland did come through with a statement. Far from condemning Morsi so soon after Washington had elevated him to statesman, it called for “a constitution that includes checks and balances, and respects fundamental freedoms, individual rights, and the rule of law consistent with Egypt’s international commitments”—in other words, replete with the very delusions that had led the administration to view the Muslim Brotherhood as a democratic force in the first place.

Things were no quieter on Sunday. Egypt’s stock market plunged by almost 10 percent—the worst since the heyday of the anti-Mubarak uprising in February last year. AP reported that

hundreds of protesters clashed with police in…Tahrir Square, marking the third day of violence sparked by…Morsi’s decision to grant himself extensive new powers…. Riot police used tear gas as protesters hurled rocks toward them in the center of the square….

With both opposition groups and the Muslim Brotherhood calling for massive rallies on Tuesday, a situation that could spin out of control, a clearly alarmed Morsi backtracked somewhat, issuing a statement that last week’s decree was of a “temporary nature” and “not meant to concentrate powers,” claiming a commitment to an “inclusive democratic dialogue.”

The next few days will tell whether, despite Morsi’s effort to calm the storm, Egypt is on the brink of a revolt somewhat analogous to the abortive 2009 revolt against the Islamist regime in Tehran. At that time President Barack Obama committed one of the gravest failures of his first term by not backing the antiregime forces. Considering how politically invested Washington is in Morsi and the Brotherhood, there is not much ground for optimism—should a comparable situation take shape—this time around either.

Still, whatever the degree of Western support or lack of support, those still hoping for a Middle East not entirely swept away by radicalism can only be encouraged by the powerful anti-Morsi, anti-Brotherhood winds now blowing in Egypt.

Ha ha ha. What else would "the administration" say? I wonder if anyone on the planet takes that rhetoric seriously? The liberals know that Obama just has these fine words quoted in order to defend himself from whatever critcism might emerge. Nobody expects anything short of sharia from Egypt. Period. Nobody cares about Saudi Arabia, who cares if Egypt goes that way? Not many people care at all.

The joke is on us up to this point.

Obama and everybody in the State Department has a collective IQ lower than my shoe size. Of course they won't say anything! It's all exactly what Ovomit wants!

I'd like to add that my feet aren't very big :p

Pigs will fly before the Islamist-in-Chief dictates to Morsi – GO NOW!! In fact, if not for his mischief making few would know who Morsi is, other than his Brotherhood Mafioso.
Barack HUSSEIN Obama is heavily invested in their sweep to power and Egypt was his testing ground. He is busy diddling in Syria to bring them to power too. Ditto all over the bloody Mid East.

Once again, we can see that the Washington Junta is not about supporting Democracy, but rather islamic parties.

    • tanstaafl

      Hoisted by their own petard.

The Egyptians are speaking out because Morsi is acting like a Dictator. Usurping powers to get the people in line. I thought the people elected him because he knew what is best for them. Now it turns out that he is all knowing too much. Perhaps that is the way of the Pharohos , and the Muslim Brotherhood, after all who know better how to keep the people in line, but that is not what democracy is all about.
I do believe there are other analogies, but today I won't go into them.

Ever watch Homeland ( a Showtime series)? But thats totally fiction. That could never happen in real life. The only difference is that obama didnt have to be turned, he is what he is from the very beginning and we didnt even check his resume.

Once America wakes up to what this guy really is, I think it will be just like those protesting in Egypt right now. The American people may be naive and to busy to pay attention but once they realize what is happening they will rise up. I just hope it happens before we're back to cooking our dinner over a camp fire.

The Spurit of AntiChrist has reered its ugly head in America just like in the mid east…We mudt be vigilant and dtudy God's word. 2nd Chronicles 7:14 for starters..We need God to heal our land.

Who could it be "everyone that cares about human dignity", that leaves out Obama, Clinton and
all Muslim Brotherhood supporters. Dignity upholds truth, without which no on can determine
right and wrong, that is why todays political elite lie all the time to engernder what is right for
them, control over everyone else. For Morsi, well what goes around comes around. Why
the Judges, only Sharia Judges will do, not enough beheadings, beatings, mutilations and
other forms of barbarian violence to entertain the salivating Islamist mob.

I think Woebama impressed about what his fellow Muslim did in Egypt… he will try to follow his steps and tamper with the American constitution in favor of the savages like himself…

    • bonnie loranger

Obama has already started to tamper with the constitution. This man is a dictator like Morsi. Obama is also an Islamist and he has proven this over and over again. He was raised with Islam and communism, the two greatest sources of evil on eath. I will never understand how half of the people in this country voted for him. Obama will not condemn Morsi, he is on his side and when the Moslem botherhood will win in Syria and Jordan the circle will be close for Israel. Israel will be in a trap. What will Obama do then? He will recognise Hamas as an official entity. I feel sorry for the Egyptians who were betrayed by Morsi. But again how could they trust a man who was a member of the Muslim brotherhood? As my mother would say:"the proof is in the pudding".

      • Mary Sue

yeah Obama even said in his book Audacity of Stupidity that he is one of those idiots that believes the constitution is a "living breathing document". How much do you wanna bet that Kagan and/or Sotomayor suddenly find a right to Sharia in it?

        • PaulRevereNow

…or a right to a third term for Obama.

  • Steve Chavez

"MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!" Listen carefully to Obama's Cairo speech on youtube and when he says that EXTREMISM IS NOT THE WAY TO REFORM, he changes his tone and look on his face and eyes. He's actually telling them that EXTREMISM IS THE WAY TO REFORM, which in this case, is a more radical grab for power.

"The WORLD has been dealing with Jimmy Carter's IRAN for thirty years and the WORLD will be dealing with Obama's ARAB SPRING FOR CENTURIES." ( S. Chavez)

Iran used to be the world's worst enabler for terrorists and now terrorists are using DEMOCRACY to gain power but once they are voted in, they dismantle all the democratic institutions they used to gain that power. Now IRAN IS NOT ALONE and the latest Israel and Hamas battle brought out who OBAMA WANTS TO TAKE OVER THE MIDDLE EAST. Even NATO MEMBER, TURKEY, sided against Israel.

NOW SYRIAN REBELS are being armed by Obama without regard, OR MAYBE KNOWINGLY, WHO IS GETTING THESE ARMS. What was the Turkish ambassador meeting with J. CHRISTopher Stevens? Wasn't that about arms to Syrian rebels even as reports say that the rebels are affiliated with al-Qaeda and others directly connected to Iran?

    NEXT IN OBAMA'S PLAN: JORDAN.

READ CAREFULLY: Obama's Cairo speech led to the Arab Spring. LEON PANETTA GAVE A SPEECH where he said CYBER-SECURITY was a major threat to the United States. He said trains could be de-railed. Oil installations could be sabotaged. Electric power plants could be shut down. ALL THESE LEADING TO "A PEARL HARBOR.'" PANETTA JUST SIGNALED TO THE TERRORISTS AND TERRORIST NATIONS THAT IN ORDER TO HURT THE U.S. WITH MAXIMUM WITH MULTIPLE DAMAGE, CYBER WAR WAS THE WAY!

Judging by the spin-out over the Benghazi tragedy, Obama hung on for far too long to his original proclamations. It seems he's too "proud" to admit a mistake. So we can predict that he will humor Morsi
in order to cover his own tracks.
Bonnie Loringer's reply (above) put it well, and I've been of the same opinion.

  • pierce

It looks like all of the above comments are right in line with the way it is going here at home. BEWARE ALL.

  • JCS

The Obama solution – another billion dollars to Egypt. Why not borrow money from China to support Obama's Islamist buddies in Egypt?

  • drivesguy

ElBaradei calling Morsi a dictator might incite the peaceful MB to grab ElBaradei and nail him to a cross just like they did to ElBaradei's supporters along with Christians in Egypt.

  • tanstaafl

Islam is fascist ideology pretending to be a religion.

  • scum

Sounds like Hornick is coming around. The article shows that there WERE in fact democratic elements in the Arab Spring movement, that now consistently oppose a centralization of power.

  • Flowerknife_us

Egypt. melting really is a good thing. Morsi just turned the fan on all it's media supporters in the Western World.

  • Drakken

Let the savages kill each other to their little muslim hearts content,in fact, if anyone didn't see this coming they are either dumber than a bag of hammers or part of the peace now crowd that actively encouraged it.

  • Len_Powder

The Obama regime claimed that Al Qaida was dead but it was resurrected in Benghazi, Libya. The regime is still struggling to explain Benghazi to the American people and probably themselves. The regime proclaims that Morsi is a 'moderate' (a claim once made about Pres. Assad of Syria) and praises him for negotiating a cease fire in Gaza and then has to explain how a 'moderate' proclaims himself a dictator. Maybe Susan Rice can explain the ironies and inconsistencies with a little help from the WH. Obama really keeps the mainstream media frantic as they try to protect him almost daily from his own follies and failures. The editors of the NY Times have probably never been busier than during Obama's reign of incompetence and negligence. It must take a lot of energy and time to protect someone so utterly incapable of being the President!
