When Class Envy Kills

A devoted mother of three on Manhattan’s posh Upper West Side, came home one evening to find that two of her beloved children suffered a gruesome murder by the family’s trusted nanny.  Emerging facts indicate that class envy may have been the motive.

On Thursday, October 25, 2012, Marina Krim took her 3 year old daughter Nessie to a swimming lesson.  The nanny, Joselyn Ortega (age 50), was supposed to meet them at a dance studio afterwards with Marina’s two other children, Lulu, age 6, and Leo, age 2.

When they didn’t show up, Marina became worried and returned to the apartment.  She went upstairs and found the apartment dark.  She then headed back down to the lobby where she asked the doorman if the nanny had left the building with the children.  He replied that they had remained in the apartment all day.

Marina returned to the apartment, turned on the lights and found nobody in the living room or the bedrooms.  Finally, she turned on the bathroom light to discover the most horrific sight imaginable to a mother: her two children had been stabbed to death, apparently by the nanny.  Both were lying in the bathtub, fully dressed, and drenched in a pool of blood.  Lulu suffered slashes around her neck, multiple stabs to her stomach and defensive wounds to her arms, indicating that the 6 year old had attempted to stave off the knife.  Leo, who had only recently had his second birthday, had two slashes across his throat.  Police Commissioner Ray Kelly asserted that the nanny started slitting her own throat when she heard the mother enter the bathroom.

The children’s mother yelled out bloodcurdling screams, prompting the neighbors to call 911.  Ironically, she still took a towel to stop the blood flow from the nanny’s neck, likely saving her life.

An ambulance came and took both children on a single stretcher to the hospital where they were pronounced dead on arrival.  The nanny, unconscious by the time the ambulance arrived, was taken to New York Presbyterian/Weill-Cornell Medical Center where she was admitted in critical condition.  She had puncture wounds to her neck vertebrae, was put into a medically induced coma and placed on tubation.

Marina grabbed her only surviving child and continued screaming uncontrollably.  Neighbors state that she could be heard half way down the street.  Witnesses sympathetically attest that Marina was hysterical and not lucid, except when she requested a physician.  She and her 3 year old had a sheet placed over their heads so that little Nessie would not absorb the magnitude of the situation, attendant with police and crowds. They were whisked away to St. Luke’s hospital where Marina was sedated.

Marina Krim’s whole life revolved around children.  She had been a stay-at-home mom for four years until she decided to return to her day job as a pediatrician.  On weekends, she taught art classes to little children.  She also kept a blog called “Life with the Krim kids”.  It was filled with hundreds of photos showing the joys of motherhood and the loving relationship that her children had with each other.  Some brothers and sisters exhibit sibling rivalry, but the Krim kids were always hugging, snuggling up with each other and playing together.  Photos showed them strolling through Central Park, chomping on Gray’s Papaya hotdogs, and enjoying ice cream with their friends.  It wasn’t difficult to detect Marina’s strong bond with her children as her blog gushed love and admiration at every entry.

The final post, entered three hours prior to the murders, read:  “[M]y favorite part of the day is after I drop the two girls off at school and get to spend three whole hours alone with my son.  I know, I’m getting darn near cheesy, I adore him so much.”

Kevin Krim, the father, is the General Manager of CNBC’s Digital Media Division.  At the time of the double murder, he was flying home from a business trip.  He was met at the airport by the police, who informed him of what had transpired, and escorted him directly to the hospital to see his wife.

Afterwards, the family stayed at a hotel for a time and then with family members.  Marina can’t bring herself to return to the apartment, even to pack up her belongings.  She proclaimed that she never wants to go back and does not want the worldly possessions she left behind.

The Krim residence is a 3-bedroom apartment in a prewar doorman building on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.  It’s in an ideal neighborhood:  walking distance to Central Park, Lincoln Center, and the Museum of Natural History.  It has numerous restaurants and quaint shops, and is one subway stop away from the Broadway theatre district.  Similar apartments in their building are on the market for $10,000 per month.

The nanny, Joselyn Ortega, hales from the Dominican Republic, and has been a naturalized US citizen for twelve years.  She had been recommended to Marina by a friend two years ago.  The Krims did everything they could to thoroughly vet her.  They even visited Joselyn’s family abroad for nine days prior to hiring her.

At first, they all got along great.  Marina treated Joselyn like family.

But Joselyn had been suffering financial problems recently.  The sublet in the Bronx where Joselyn and her son resided had expired, and they were forced to move into a Harlem apartment with Joselyn’s sister and niece.  Rumor has it that Joselyn was in debt, despite the fact that the Krims paid her well.  Having been made aware of her troubles, the Krims tried to help.  They offered Jocelyn five additional hours of light housework per week to help her earn additional money.  They also paid for her round trip airfare to the Dominican Republic so she could visit her family.  They even arranged an interview for her as a part-time baby-sitter with another family.  However, the family declined to hire her, explaining that her demeanor was too grumpy.

Initially, police had no clue as to what could possibly have been the motive for Jocelyn to engage in this unspeakable crime.  She had no criminal record, left no note, and no evidence was found in her home.

But upon her return to consciousness, tidbits of information began dribbling in.  According to Joselyn’s peers, Joselyn resented her employers for living a life that she perceived as luxury, while she struggled to pay her bills.

Reportedly, there was recent tension between her and the Krim family and Joselyn didn’t like “being told what to do”.  Instead of being grateful that they did so much to try to help her, she griped about doing housework, quipping that she’s not a maid, but a nanny, which apparently she thought was more dignified.  Her financial situation was taking its toll.  Joselyn had been loosing sleep, weight, and her relatives took her to visit a psychologist.  Joselyn’s mood had changed and the Krims told her that if her work performance didn’t improve, they might have to let her go.

After Joselyn awoke from her coma, she immediately lawyered up.  She inquired about how her own family was doing, but never once asked about or mentioned the Krim family.  To date, reports indicate that she has shown no remorse for stealing the lives of the two children who were left in her care.

Those who knew Joselyn are indicating that class envy drove Jocelyn to commit her heinous acts.  Her apparent notions of entitlement and fairness echo those on the left who perceive that life is supposed to result in financially equal outcomes for all.

But life isn’t just about money.  Everyone is dealt a different hand in all regards.  Some people are blessed with beauty, brains, or a loving family.  Others suffer the hardships of physical disability, or come from abusive or drug-addicted homes.  And, it is only through an accident of birth that some are born into freedom while others are born into politically tyrannical countries.

Those who understand at an early age that life isn’t fair and accept it, have a chance of growing up as well adjusted adults to have the best lives they can with whatever assets or attributes they’ve been given.

Others, forever the victims, demand that society meet their every need.  But as the famous author, Thomas Sowell noted, “social justice” is an illusion, impossible to attain.  Additionally, the premise that money cures all ills is patently false.

The Krims worked hard for their money, and appear to have been generous with it.  But they know first hand that all the material riches of this world cannot cure the pain or fill the void caused by the brutal and senseless murder of their two young children.

Joselyn Ortega was reportedly a religious Catholic.  In Catholicism, envy is deemed one of the Seven Deadly Sins.  They are often described as “capital sins” because they engender the commission of further sins.  And sometimes, as in Joselyn’s case, class envy kills.

This holiday season please keep the Krim family in your prayers. And remember, the greatest gifts in life cannot be bought.  RIP sweet Lulu and Leo.

The nanny not only had slashed wrists but stab wounds on her neck. I believe all 3 were murdered in retaliation for the t husband reporting on a lawsuit against a major bank. You wonder why we no longer have a free press.

    • Darin

The NY Time article plainly states that Mrs. Krim came into the bathroom and found the nanny stabbing herself in the neck. Also, the nanny has said nothing about being attacked. You’d think hat would be the first thing she claimed if that was the case.

    • Steve

This woman calls herself an “investigative journalist”? LOL Her article merely trots out facts that were printed by other sources and she can’t even get those right! She also has to inject her tired political views in a completely inappropriate manner. Apparently it’s Obama’s fault because now nannies believe they should make as much as vice-presidents of large companies.
This article is an embarrassment and should be removed.

      • NTS

Hm, incovnenient evidence of how and other dems' vile attitudes lead to murder, therefore you call to shut down the message. Typical.

      • Goemon

You should be in charge of Internet moderation when the UN takes it over.

      • PaulRevereNow

In your Orwellian world-view, can Obama be criticized for ANYTHING? Don't you believe that Obama should, as the POTUS(a high profile position of public trust), take responsibility for SOME things, at least? OBVIOUSLY, Obama didn't commit these murders, and nowhere does the article say he's even a person of interest. But he can be fairly criticized, I believe, for ratcheting up the level of envy in American society; and for his blatant attacks on individual responsibilty; through his constant attacks on capitalism, on the individual("You didn't build that," et al), on his inappropriate comments on certain events(the Trayvon Martin case, for example); on his downright destructive input into the educational process(his initiative to keep misbehaving students from being punished)
Society if falling apart; and our children are paying for it, with their lives. And all YOU can do is attack the messenger. Look at yourself in the mirror tomorrow morning, and see if you don't feel ashamed. You should.

        Dear Steve,

My news source does not have to 1st or original. they just have to be the best aggregator of the truth.

        Try Again!

BTW How much are you rich master paying you to posts on sites like this? You know they vacation in the Hamptons with the Clintons & the Obamas.

      • objectivefactsmatter

"Apparently it's Obama's fault because now nannies believe they should make as much as vice-presidents of large companies."

Obama was not mentioned, but he's a Kool-Aid drinker and now that you mention it, his divisive leadership may have had an influence, but we have no way to measure that objectively. Interesting how you inferred the connection on your own.

"This article is an embarrassment and should be removed."

Does it embarrass you as a communist?

    • Steve

Josie, your reply is, incredibly, even dumber than the original. The nanny is still alive so there haven't been 3 murders. The husband didn't report on anything-you're referring apparently to his company reporting on a lawsuit. Your supposition that 2 children had their throats slashed because something in the public domain was reported on by his company is too silly to even comment on, not to mention it doesn't gibe with any known facts.

    • Your mom

Class Envy? How about class exploitation? Haven't the rich taken advantage of the poor since the beginning of time? Who's our soldiers defending our nation now? Is it the rich… I don't think so. So to have 2 rich children killed is a start…

      • NTS

Wow. You are an utter creep. A fine democrat voter, no doubt.

        • yourmom

yes sir. Obama baby. Ride with the winners !

yeah ride with the winners, all the way to the Second Great Depression. Ask your grandpa what that was like.

That's Democrat, capitalized. The Democratic Party is only nominally democratic.

      • Tata

I think the rich should build a robot army to kill off vacuous moron leaches like you, then everyone left will be rich and prosperous. A hard working rich person is far more alive than a whiny, jealous twit like you anyway.

          • JoJoJams

god you loony lefties are pathetic! Put a woman down for choosing to stay at home and be a REAL MOM (unlike your sorry @zz), which is what I've heard from the left the entirety of my life – how being a stay at home mom is some kind of terrible atrocitry perpetuated by men – and then, this woman goes back to work (which is what you loony lefties scream for – freedom!! woohoo!) and now you have the d@mn audacity to say she should have…..stayed at home instead of work. I'm beyond pissed right nowm, and if your skanky arse were in front of me – god only knows what I would do to you, a piece of filth!

          • objectivefactsmatter

"Maybe this wouldn't have happened if…. SHE WATCHED HER OWN DAMN KIDS !"

While that's literally true, what that really means is we can't trust psychotic liberal whiners. Thanks for being so open and proving what's presented here. We need to be prepared for the likes of you and that fraudulent murdering babysitter "nanny."

I like the "damn kids" phrase. It shows how much you empathize with the criminal because you see her as being a member of the same class, the class of the envious hateful murderer.

      • T. Payne

My wife an immigrant came to this country with no more than a suit case. They have worked as a stock clerk in a retail store, as a worker in a fast food joint, as a cashier in a grocery store. They have been told as a military spouse that they have no relatives (a husband or wife has aleast 1 relative & so the statement was a contradiction in terms). Therefore the hiring agency would not consider putting their resume out there. Military spouses are not wanted because they move every 3 years. How is that for discrimination? Then there was the discrimination of the local school (read university) so a professional job was hard to get. My spouse found a job in their profession, but it was only part time. The college did not want to pay benefits. When a full time job opened up they were passed over, so the college could hire an outsider that they let go in less than a year. Of course HR was ran by a black female. Figures. After all that my spouse finally got a professional job after 7 years after graduating & has never looked back.

So I don't feel sorry for someone with an accounting degree that can't find work. Maybe their problem is that they were living in the liberal Mecca of New York, where liberal taxes have raised the cost of living sky high. Maybe liberal immigration policies have flooded the local American market so that wages are depressed for entry level work. Maybe it was that their accounting degree was not up to U.S. standards. Maybe they didn't try.

You writing "2 … children murdered" is a declaration of treason. Progressives like you can start problems. The rest of us are ready.

        • objectivefactsmatter

"Military spouses are not wanted because they move every 3 years. How is that for discrimination?"

It's lawful discrimination, as much as we'd like everyone to have what we see as a fair chance. How exactly do we improve her situation without taking from others, possibly demotivating those who lose out on this "equity transaction?"

"Then there was the discrimination of the local school (read university) so a professional job was hard to get."

It's not clear you understand the distinctions between lawful and unlawful discrimination. Facts matter. You don't give enough of them and your first example was not valid as unlawful.

"Of course HR was ran by a black female."

Statistically, you might now have a good point on moral grounds, but lawfully you are still screwed.

"After all that my spouse finally got a professional job after 7 years after graduating & has never looked back. "

Awesome! Glad to hear it. Now she's a true American!

"You writing "2 … children murdered" is a declaration of treason. Progressives like you can start problems. The rest of us are ready."

Damn right, I just wish there were more of that group; "the rest of us."

"Class Envy? How about class exploitation? Haven't the rich taken advantage of the poor since the beginning of time?"

Yes. Class envy is what we call your statement about "exploitation." Please show your evidence for this "poor abused maid" being "exploited" other than the evidence used to show victimization of other criminals in liberal land, "It's an act of desperation, nobody would do that unless they were oppressed and forced to."

You have unquestionably proved the theory to be true at least some of the time. Thanks.

It is interesting reading the Leftist replies. It is educational. Their replies supporting the nanny also show that they don't care that two children are dead. It is about scoring some kind of points for their worldview.

"It is interesting reading the Leftist replies. It is educational. Their replies supporting the nanny also show that they don't care that two children are dead. It is about scoring some kind of points for their worldview."

It shows they're motivated by hate. Everyone gets angry some times. And then there are those who have their entire worldviews constructed on the basis of anger and hatred. Actually, Jamie Glazov wrote a book, "United in Hate" that I initially thought was a bit over-the-top but the more I thought about it and processed it against current events, I see that he is on to some strong theories that explain quite a bit.

The irony. Irony is not always surprising though.

  • davarino

My God, how do you go on living after losing such precious little ones.

To the point of the author, this is kind of like the person who keys a nice car because they cant have one. Thats property rights, and they are being eroded. Last I checked people are still allowed to make as much money as they want, but I guess the left want the ambitious to stop making so much money. But all that will do is cause there to be less money for them to take, but they dont understand that. What they really want is revenge, not equality, then you get a country like Soviet Union, Com China, Cuba, Greece….etc.
AND NO WAY TO MOVE UP THE LADDER YOURSELF, EVER. All you get are the scraps handed out to you by the all knowing, all caring redistributionist.

    • Steve

Davarino, So she slashed the children's throats because she was a leftist? Why don't you take your political screechings to some site where it can be appreciated, if such a place exists.

      • NTS

He called it as it is. Dem hate mongering based on class envy leads to murder. Own it.

        • objectivefactsmatter

If only we could prove that statistically, but you're clearly correct. Obama murders ambassadors and ordinary citizens. How about that. I hadn't openly realized it till now.

      • objectivefactsmatter

"Davarino, So she slashed the children's throats because she was a leftist? "

The theory is that she was affected by leftist delusions. We don't know what her political ideas and theories were, just which political ideas influenced her and led her to these deranged actions. Can you discern the difference or do you need more explanation?

      • davarino

No, your right, I'm sure she must have been a conservative. I did not state that she was a leftist, but that the left is influencing people to have these class envy tendancies. You dont see the right encouraging people to take from the rich. You see the right encouraging people to take advantage of the opportunities in front of them in order to have more. Thats all

    • objectivefactsmatter

"My God, how do you go on living after losing such precious little ones. To the point of the author, this is kind of like the person who keys a nice car because they cant have one."

There is a huge difference between vandalism and murder, but I think you agree with that. Socialism may have been about some benevolent notion some time in the past, but ever since Lenin or earlier, it's been about being at the top of the "commanding heights" just as we have Chinese politicians without any pretense of democracy (though they use the rhetoric), and then you have Putin…but are they Marxist really? Not at all. They are exploiting the delusions of people who have been taught to envy and expect things they don't in fact deserve.

Even here in this article discussion we have direct proof.

  • Sara

This is a terribly written article. What an embarrassment to journalism. It reads more like a fiction novel written by a fifth grader. And the even bigger issue…a lot of the info given is INCORRECT. It's like this lady just wrote what ever she pleased after reading other articles on this sad story without any fact checking and then just embellished little tidbits here and there. Pathetic.

    • Myrtle

Thank you. I noticed the inaccuracies too and the interjection of politics is totally out of place.

"Leftist class envy hatemongering" ?? Puh-leeze

          • objectivefactsmatter

That's all you've got? Not much of a denial, never mind even attempting to make a case against his statement.

What do you call it when people are told that they are victims of others COLLECTIVELY?

            CLASS = COLLECTIVE

            Get it?

Creating up political action committees based on race and victim status is not helpful. If people need temporary help from truly unjust, or unfortunate events, I'm all for helping individuals. Telling people that they are victims by virtue of abuse of statistics is destructive to everyone, mostly to the ones convinced they are victims when they aren't. Getting them to vote in blocks according to this alleged victim scenario, why that is precisely what the term "class warfare" means in a democracy.

What do you think it means?

    • objectivefactsmatter

      Another great point.

  • Viet Vet

Some of the posters on this thread seem perplexed that others would believe that these murders could be politically motivated. This is not the first time that jealousy and greed have been responsible for murder. In fact it's a rather common theme. And yes it is many times driven by leftist tactics. It's at the forefront of the teaching of Marx and more contemporary marxists as Cloward and Piven, Noam Chomsky, Howard Zinn, Saul Alinsky, etc. The left is expert at exploiting the human predisposition to be jealous and greedy. This is what drives the OWS for example. It's a key ingredient of Obummer's division strategy. There was a time when this nation was far more religious than today and religion is key in mitigating this human frailty (jealousy and greed). Thus the '50 years' war on religion by the left, led by the ACLU, whose founder, Roger Baldwin, remarked that: "communism is, of course, the goal."

    • Viet Vet

Of course it should have been: '50 years war'….not "50 years' war.

  • Viet Vet

Today, the left is falling all over themselves trying to pronounce that Baldwin wasn't a communist. But those are his words, and the agenda of the ACLU, especially where religion is concerned, is quite illustrative. Yes Alger Hiss was a communist spy, another thing the left keeps trying to deny, notwithstanding the now irrefutable evidence. Why can't leftists be proud of their history??? These "revered" people built the foundation upon which the left stands today. It's hilarious to watch the left attempt to disown these reprobates while at the same time pushing the same identical philosophy.

  • Kristin

I'm curious-all these posts about information being inaccurate in this story-but no one offers WHICH information is incorrect or flat out wrong and then corrects the writer. Just frustrating. Yes, Kristen – the responses about innaccuracies are from people who actually ARE living in loony lefty lala land.

To all of the pathologically sick libs on this site: yes, class envy hurts AND kills. There are several generations of citizens all over the world, especially in advanced societies, who believe that "have's" owe it to "have-not's". Occupy Wall Street and other vandalism-causing, hatred-fueled movements are just an example of this.

I'm glad to see that no one here is standing up for the nanny.

Beautifully written and articulate article! I have been following this story and its truly heartbreaking and unimaginable that it even happened. Continue to pray for this family.

A few hours before the murders, CNBC posts an article about a lawsuit against the most powerfull men in the world, concerning money laundering and racketering of 47 trillions dollars.
A few hours after the murders, the post is deleted and the page cannot be found

The link isn't obvious, but should let us suspicious.

I'm a member of "the left." Don't speak for me. I don't think it's excusable for anyone to murder children, no matter the circumstance. I also don't think we are all born equal. Some of us are prettier, smarter, stronger, or richer than others. And we all have pur individual hardships. If you want to make a point about Joselyn Ortega's motive, fine. Go for it. But based on your comments about "the left," I suggest you leave us out of your argument because you clearly don't hang out with "the left." I say this from the perspective of a privileged, white, member of "the left."

I read in an obscure article that the husband (Kevin Krim, General Manager of CNBC’s Digital Media Division) had just broken a scandalous story about Obama and the Obama Administration and George Soros possibly being sued for the billions of dollars they lost for Americans in the 2008 financial meltdown and it’s highly possible that someone got the nanny to kill the children in retaliation and to get him to take the story down. He did take the story down and I’ve never seen it since. I’m surprised that nobody has looked into that story to see if it’s true. I guess others don’t want their children killed. I’m afraid to even post this.

Ironically, Latin American Catholics are often also indoctrinated into Marxism as well.
