Courtesy of ConservARTive.com, some are saying that this may be an excerpt from Ambassador Stevens’ last interview. The Arab interviewer presses Stevens on the Islamist violence in Libya and his answers remain diplomatic. To what extent these answers reflected his private views is a matter of speculation, which is why the recovery of his diary played a crucial role in challenging the official cover-up.
The reporter questioning Stevens, unlike her American counterparts, is aware that Libyan instability is a serious issue. This was a topic that received limited coverage in American media to avoid casting doubt on the Libyan War.
Stevens follows the same line in the video, emphasizing the positive and avoiding discussing the precarious situation. Motivational speakers often claim that the facade of success can create success, and everyone in the Obama Administration and the diplomatic corps, down to Stevens, were doing their part to maintain that facade. Only after the attack did the facade begin to come apart.
While the intelligence community was warning about the rise of Al Qaeda in the region, the White House was trying to run an election on having defeated Al Qaeda and reformed the Middle East with the Arab Spring. The intelligence professionals remained unheard because what they were saying was too dangerous and politically inconvenient.
The debate over whether Obama called Benghazi a terrorist attack is almost besides the point. Benghazi wasn’t a terrorist attack, it was a military assault by the Islamist militias who are overrunning the region in the wake of the Arab Spring.
The Benghazi attack and the rest of the Salafist wave of violence around September 11, 2012 is to Obama as the initial wave of bombings in Iraq were to Bush. The attacks kill the success image and showcase the instability.
Obama and his media cronies chose to cover that up by blaming Freedom of Speech because the dangerous secret that they were carrying around was that his Middle Eastern foreign policy had created a degree of violent instability far beyond anything that the invasion of Iraq had done.
Claire Lopez has suggested that Stevens was targeted over the Libyan Islamist terror pipeline into Syria. Others have called it a retaliation for the death of Abu Yahya al-Libi. But the larger story is that on September 11, 2012, Al Qaeda and their Islamist allies staged a show of force across the region. The Mohammed video was a convenient excuse for the Salafists and for Obama, but the real story is that most of North Africa is now Iraq.
