America Doesn’t Have a Gun Problem, It Has a Gang Problem

Chicago’s murder numbers have hit that magic 500. Baltimore’s murder toll has passed 200. In Philly, it’s up to 324, the highest since 2007. In Detroit, it’s approaching 400, another record. In New Orleans, it’s almost at 200. New York City is down to 414 from 508. In Los Angeles, it’s over 500. In St. Louis it’s 113 and 130 in Oakland.  It’s 121 in Memphis and 76 in Birmingham.

Washington, D.C., home of the boys and girls who can solve it all, is nearing its own big 100.

Those 12 cities alone account for nearly 3,200 dead and nearly a quarter of all murders in the United States. And we haven’t even visited sunny Atlanta or chilly Cleveland.

These cities are the heartland of America’s real gun culture. It isn’t the bitter gun-and-bible clingers in McCain and Romney territory who are racking up a more horrifying annual kill rate than Al Qaeda; it’s Obama’s own voting base.

Chicago, where Obama delivered his victory speech, has homicide numbers that match all of Japan and are higher than Spain, Poland and pre-war Syria. If Chicago gets any worse, it will find itself passing the number of murders for the entire country of Canada.

Chicago’s murder rate of 15.65 per 100,000 people looks nothing like the American 4.2 rate, the Midwestern 4.5 or the Illinois’ 5.6 rates, but it does look like the murder rates in failed countries like Rwanda, Sierra Leone and Zimbabwe. To achieve Chicago’s murder rate, African countries usually have to experience a bloody genocidal civil war or decades of tyranny.

But Chicago isn’t even all that unique. Or the worst case scenario. That would be New Orleans which at an incredible 72.8 murder rate is ten times higher than the national average. If New Orleans were a country, it would have the 2nd highest murder rate in the world, beating out El Salvador.

Louisiana went red for Romney 58 to 40, but Orleans Parish went blue for Obama 80 to 17.

St. Louis has a murder rate just a little lower than Belize. Baltimore has a worse murder rate than South Africa and Detroit has a worse murder rate than Colombia. Obama won both St. Louis and Baltimore by comfortable margins. He won Detroit’s Wayne County 73 to 26.

Homicide rates like these show that something is broken, but it isn’t broken among the Romney voters rushing to stock up on assault rifles every time Obama begins threatening their right to buy them; it’s broken among Obama’s base.

Any serious conversation about gun violence and gun culture has to begin at home; in Chicago, in Baltimore, in New York City, in Los Angeles and in Washington, D.C.

Voting for Obama does not make people innately homicidal. Just look at Seattle which is agonizing over its 26 murders. That’s about the same number of murders as East St. Louis which has only 27,000 people to Seattle’s 620,000.

So what is happening in Chicago to drive it to the gates of hell ahead of Zimbabwe and Rwanda?

A breakdown of the Chicago killing fields shows that 83% of those murdered in Chicago last year had criminal records. In Philly, it’s 75%. In Milwaukee it’s 77% percent. In New Orleans, it’s 64%. In Baltimore, it’s 91%. Many were felons who had served time. And as many as 80% of the homicides were gang related.

Chicago’s problem isn’t guns; it’s gangs. Gun control efforts in Chicago or any other major city are doomed because gangs represent organized crime networks which stretch down to Mexico, and trying to cut off their gun supply will be as effective as trying to cut off their drug supply.

America’s murder rate isn’t the work of the suburban and rural homeowners who shop for guns at sporting goods stores and at gun shows, and whom news shows profile after every shooting, but by the gangs embedded in the urban areas controlled by the Democratic machine. The gangs who drive up America’s murder rate look nothing like the occasional mentally ill suburban white kid who goes off his medication and decides to shoot up a school. Lanza, like most serial killers, is a media aberration, not the norm.

National murder statistics show that blacks are far more likely to be killers than whites and they are also far more likely to be killed. The single largest cause of homicides is the argument. 4th on the list is juvenile gang activity with 676 murders, which combined with various flavors of gangland killings takes us nearly to the 1,000 mark. America has more gangland murders than Sierra Leone, Eritrea and Puerto Rico have murders.

Our national murder rate is not some incomprehensible mystery that can only be attributed to the inanimate tools, the steel, brass and wood that do the work. It is largely the work of adult males from age 18 to 39 with criminal records killing other males of that same age and criminal past.

If this were going on in Rwanda, El Salvador or Sierra Leone, we would have no trouble knowing what to make of it, and silly pearl-clutching nonsense about gun control would never even come up. But this is Chicago, it’s Baltimore, it’s Philly and NOLA; and so we refuse to see that our major cities are in the same boat as some of the worst trouble spots in the world.

Lanza and Newtown are comforting aberrations. They allow us to take refuge in the fantasy that homicides in America are the work of the occasional serial killer practicing his dark art in one of those perfect small towns that always show up in murder mysteries or Stephen King novels. They fool us into thinking that there is something American about our murder rate that can be traced to hunting season, patriotism and bad mothers.

But go to Chicago or Baltimore. Go where the killings really happen and the illusion comes apart.

There is a war going on in America between gangs of young men who bear an uncanny resemblance to their counterparts in Sierra Leone or El Salvador. They live like them, they fight for control of the streets like them and they kill like them.

America’s horrific murder rate is a result of the transformation of major American cities into Sierra Leone, Somalia, Rwanda and El Salvador. Our murder rate now largely consists of criminals killing criminals.

As David Kennedy, the head of the Center for Crime Prevention and Control, put it, “The majority of homicide victims have extensive criminal histories. This is simply the way that the world of criminal homicide works. It’s a fact.”

America is, on a county by county basis, not a violent country, just as it, on a county by county basis, did not vote for Obama. It is being dragged down by broken cities full of broken families whose mayors would like to trash the Bill of Rights for the entire country in the vain hope that national gun control will save their cities, even though gun control is likely to be as much help to Chicago or New Orleans as the War on Drugs.

Obama’s pretense that there needs to be a national conversation about rural American gun owners is a dishonest and cynical ploy that distracts attention from the real problem that he and politicians like him have sat on for generations.

We do not need to have a conversation about the NRA. We need to have a conversation about Chicago.

Detroit was the murder capital for quite a while, especially after its " apocalypse" in the 1960s, when many areas were gutted by the huge race riots. Curiously, its murder rate apparently went down, and many suspect that it is due to the fact that there are just fewer people around to be murdered,

By the way Chicago sounds with its infestation of gangers, fallling on hard times and its corrupt political establishment, I can't help but wonder if Detroit's fate also awaits Chicago.

    • Choi

There also was a time, not that long ago, when Gary,Indiana,a SUBURB of Chicago's South Side, was America's Murder CAPITOL.

      • Don Kosloff

Gary, Indiana is a post-induatrial city and it is not suburban. It is a stretch to call it a suburm of Chicago. I have been in Chicago, Gary and several actual suburbs of Chicago. Gary bears no resemblance to what most people would consider a suburb.

    • fuzzygracie

The only reason the murder rates drop in these mini 3rd world cities is because of population flight.

E.St.Louis & St.Louis have interchangeable gangs and gun houses. Both have had major population flights but gang and drug activity is still centered in both crime towns.Obama upped their welfare and school grants so they moved into neighboring towns and commute to commit crimes.

The states and government built MetroLink, a handy criminal moving train that services the MO-IL metro area and also goes to Chicago .

    • @Babylonandon

That general principle – reducing the population to jsut the folks the elites need to serve them (really solve the world's problems) is THE final goal behind the Progressive movement.

  • Mary Sue

Funny how the same leftists, as noted, whine about how the War on Drugs is a failure, yet seem to fail to notice that the War on Guns is a spectacular failure also. Their hypocrisy knows no bounds.

    • Kenneth Olsen

How many of the murders cited in the article above can be traced directly back to the War on Drugs? I'll bet it's quite a few, as the gangs are fighting over territory and have no access to the courts to solve disputes. The principles of liberty are clear, and the War on Drugs has led to a bloodbath because it is in violation of human nature and man's God-given rights.

See Szasz, Dr. Thomas: Our Right to Drugs, and Ceremonial Chemistry: The Ritual Persecution of Drugs, Addicts, and Pushers.

      • patron

Drugs do not create criminals, and legalizing drugs will create more crime and addicts. Simple possession is already plea bargained away as misdemeanors.

Marijuana legalization will bring in the criminals as suppliers and give them legal protection. Prostitution, extortion, robbery and sexual assault goes up.

The 1930s prohibition argument is not true. Bars and liquor stores are still very violent places and havens for criminals.

        • RLEmery

Poor Patron, you have no medical studies to back your claim! You really need to get over your fake morality as mankind has been getting buzzed in some form since the day we first stepped foot on this earth and always will.

Really, the mob continued supplying illicit alcohol at obscene profit margins after prohibition, no.

The mob was able to use those obscene profits to corrupt with, no, they couldnt.

The mob was able to use those obscene profits to buy weapons and commit violence with, no!

Yeah, went to the local liquor store yesterday, where were the bad guys? I should have been mugged and killed just walking into that store. Wait, I am not in drugs floating in bizaroo world as you are.

So since 60% of the cartles revenues are marijuana alone, just imagine if all of a sudden the marijuana was 75% less in cost and treated like alcohol is by the govt!

My, your not very good at doing anything but barking like a chihuahua!

      • Mary Sue

It's not a war ON drugs that's causing the killing, it's the war OF drugs.

    • AdinaK

Mary Sue, not only are the Dems spectacularly wrong on all counts, but the safest places are where the 'bitter clingers', red necks', teabaggers' reside! Not only are they mostly law abiding, but having LEGAL guns renders their towns safer! Who in their right, center or left mind would dare enter their 'hood?

HOWEVER, in lefty areas there is no such animal. It is akin to the wild west in most of their 'nabes. Why is this? Because gangsters will do what they do best – kill. And hoods will always have guns, whether there is gun control or not. So without legal gun owners protecting their families and towns, all of America will be rife for the gangbangers.

The regime is after LEGAL guns, leaving the citizens dependent on a radical, revolutionary leadership –… the citizens would be suicidal to allow them to get away with it.

      • Mary Sue

        I know, right?

Over in Vancouver there, they've started to have a more serious gang problem within the last 20 years. The gangs in question are the Bacon Brothers (lily white gangsters whose parents are so effed in the head that they're supportive of their sons openly, including the MOTHER, in a start contrast to some black or latino mothers that deny to their dying day that their sons are culpable with "My Jamal/Enrico is a good boy!"), the Red Scorpions, and the multi-ethnic "U.N. gang", so called because there's a lot of minorities in the gang (such as "South Asians" which are sourced from India). A few years ago several people were shot in a case of gang-related mistaken identity.

Fortunately no city in Canada can be individually stupid about guns. You won't see divergent gun rules in Montreal as compared to Moose Jaw. It's all federal and all the same everywhere.

    • Ghostwriter

To the idiots who want to legalize drugs,I've repeatedly asked this question and I will ask it again. Do you want your kids using the very things you want to legalize?

      • Jarhead1982

To those with the fake morality BS, they already do!

        Just like they drink alcohol!

So much of whether they do depends on YOU, and if your too stupid to give them the tools so they make a proper choices in life, then you shouldnt have been a parent!

      • waiting for the war

I don't want kids drinking alcohol or doing drugs….you make a specious argument. Thanks for playing

    • Scott

I'm liberal, I think the war on drugs is a failure. I also think the war on guns is a failure. People need to focus on the murderers and the cities with the high murder rates instead of the guns themselves. Figure out how to educate people in those cities and help them to make something of themselves so they don't have to join gangs and end up killing people. But don't target the guns, that's ridiculous.

  • RedWhiteAndJew

Gangster are, by definition, law breakers. They can, and do, obtain guns through any and all means, usually illegal. Passing laws against gun ownership, or other trivia such as "assault weapons" and their magazines (which don't figure into gangland violence to any significant degree) is the reaction of left wing law makers. I am willing to grant some (but only some) are not statists who dream of the time when every knee shall bow to government hegemony, but the remaining idiots are just laying their good intention pavers into the road to you know where. As the article points out, the US cities where murder rates resemble those of Rwanda, are those which already heavily restrict, if not ban, gun ownership. Of course, all laws like that accomplish, is denial of guns to those who give a damn about obeying the law.

The outcome is inevitable: wilding gangsters, and cowering and defenseless citizens.

    • Mary Sue

yeah, and while Obama and company pull "Fast and Furious", they fail to realize Guns can come into USA from Mexico after having been brought in from any given 3rd world country/conflict zone. After all, Mexico is so corrupt that while keeping guns from regular Mexicans, there is NO way in HELL that they're keeping guns out of the hands of the drug cartels.

  • Tina Trent

Meanwhile, the Soros funded anti-incarceration machine is dismantling or obstructing the criminal justice policies that lifted us out of the last bloodbath, as Rahm Emanuel dithers over the meaning of the words "500" and "murdered in Chicago," and a NYC DA breathlessly reports plans to severely punish an insane woman for saying something crazy right after she murdered someone — instead of acknowledging how insane they were to not incarcerate her because she was crazy the last six times she assaulted someone.

Chicago is on track to becoming the American Ciudad Juarez in every way possible.

    • Mary Sue

Well now it's not simply crazy, it's a hate crime this time. How being crazy and attacking people doesn't deserve being locked up but this does, boggles the mind.

      • Tina Trent

I'm not saying she shouldn't be incarcerated. I'm saying it's insane to express outrage over her language, to feed the hate crimes machine. She should have been locked up long ago for other violent assaults, but the system didn't enforce those laws.

        • Mary Sue

well yeah, but I'm talking about how the Justice system reacted. When she was just being crazy, they didn't do a damn thing. When it became a hate crime, that's when they started paying attention.

  • Questions

Is there somewhere in this piece where race comes into play? I mean, who's kidding who? The overwhelming majority of the murderers are black or Hispanic. The problem here isn't "gangs." It's nonwhites who refuse to grow into anything even resembling adults. When was the last time a white gang terrorized an urban neighborhood? The 1920s? Deracinating a social problem isn't the way to solve it.

I might add that the number of murders this year in Washington is way DOWN from two decades ago. Back then, annual murders were in the 300-to-400 range. Not all of the news is bad.

    • Mary Sue

"nonwhites refusing to grow into anything even resembling adults"

      That's the very definition of a gang…

    • Ronald Chappell

I understand that the supreme court just struck down the DC gun ban law allowing average citizens to now own guns. Could this have anything to do with the reduction in killing?

    • A 22 Year Old Man

You've hit on a correlation with ethnicity, but it isn't causative. It's the liberal vote-machine that keeps those minorities in poverty so that they'll vote for more handouts, thus ensuring a steady Democratic voter base as long as none of them get too economically successful. The side effect of this poverty is crime. So yes, it's mostly blacks and hispanics, but it's not BECAUSE they're black and hispanic–it's because the democratic party is keeping them in economic chains because the only way the democratic party can win elections is by dividing and conquering–turning this group against the other by race hatred and class hatred.

      • A 22 Year Old Man

You might want to search "Nocturne in Black and White" on Sultan Knish. It's an article Daniel wrote earlier this year, and it does an excellent job at explaining why you're seeing the effects you've mentioned.

    • Jarhead1982

You do realize that in the late 1990's, Washington D.C. implemented a down town reviltalization program, where they bulldozed down large swaths of slums and dilapadated housing where the gangs and drug dealers roamed and committed mayhem into new business.

Immeadiately thereafter their murder rate and total dropped because they had physically moved the bad guys out to other cities, not due to any laws or more effective crime fighting!

      • Rigidflexibility

        Excellent point.

You don't control crime, you move it.

Or if you can, black white or green, you move away from it.

  • Kostoglotov

    So true. Great article.

  • Deep Space

Gangs + Guns = Problem. Gangs + No Guns = Nuisance

    • Daniel Greenfield

Organized crime always finds ways to get its hands of guns. Even in gun controlled countries.

    • fuzzygracie

Guns aren't legal in Mexico .
Gangs kill people with everything from the knock out game to rocks.

    • Mary Sue

do you seriously think that in gun-controlled Mexico, the immensely wealthy powerful, corrupting-of-local-officials Drug Cartels can't import them some Russian or Chinese AK-47s or UZI's if they wanted them?

    • That_Guy

Gangs + Law Abiding Citizens + No Guns = Massive Violent Crime Rate Increase
Rape, Breaking and Entering, Carjacking, All go up when you disarm the good guys. Don't be afraid of guns. Be afraid of the bad guys.

    • Pulseguy

There are something like 300 million hand guns, which is what kills most people in the inner cities. A well-taken care of handgun can last about a hundred years. You could stop selling guns and take out all assault rifles and you would not see a reduction in handgun murder for decades. Like it, or don't, but guns are here and the bad guys will have them for a hundred years.

    • Rigidflexibility

Uh! Check out the murder rate in Great Britian since there are no guns (at least among the law abiding folks), it has sky rocketed.

I'm old and my trusty 1911 Colt .45 is older. We both still work and that keeps the trouble away.

Otherwise any 18 year old punk and his buddies could kick in my door and my head with impunity.

Which is another statistic to look up – number of "Hot"(people home) burglaries of seniors when there are no guns.

    • Greg

Deep Space. Just exactly how are you going to disarm the Gangs to achieve your Gangs + No Guns scenario? Given the fact that a large percentage of gang members have a criminal record, gun ownership for them is already illegal. Making it MORE illegal? For them, possession of a firearm is likely a trip to jail for parole violations, yet they carry… so they will be dissuaded because we have now made it MORE ILLEGAL? Please, use logic, here. Your scenario is simply not able to stand up to even the most minimal application of logic.

    • P-Mack

You really think you can keep guns out of gangs hands? Dream on! Thats like saying youre gonna keep drugs out of there as well. We all know how well that works.

    • CommonSense

      Guns+No gangs=No problem.

  • Rio Rancho

So is the NRA proposing armed guards in schools in all those safe counties?

    • Mary Sue

Police in the Schools actually started with Clinton, albeit for far different reasons. His aim was to reduce gang activity and drug dealing in schools by the presence of police. Remember the 100,000 cops thing?

In "safe" (non-gang riddled) districts they should do well enough to have a principal or vice-principal carrying concealed.

      • LT714RET

Clinton started the police in schools as a direct result of Columbine. He signed the Bill on April 20th 2000. He alloted $120 million. It was the 1st yer anniversary.

        • Mary Sue

you are factually incorrect. Columbine was 1999. 100,000 Cops was 1994.

      • LT714RET

The 100,000 cops thing was for COP Community Oriented Policing. Just a new name for a time proven police on the beat plan.

    • Jarhead1982

You get to choose which is the best alternative.

Armed teacher, little or no cost, no risk.

Armed security guard $40-$50 ph normal cost.

See most mass killing attacks it takes about 2 minutes from when the shooting begins for a call to be placed to police.

The fastest a police officer has responded to such a call was 2 minutes at Aurora because the police happened to be very close by, a matter of luck. Most response times to active shooters are near 12 minutes.

How many shots can an untrained shooter fire in 4 minutes, 50, 75, 100? Yeah, even when taking their time 20-25 shots fired per minute isnt unusual!

10 round magazines, lol, at 200 rounds is 19 magazine exchanges and a slow untrained person makes that change in 3 seconds ea, so 10 round magazines only means a 40 second increase in time for the crazy to reload. At 12 minutes average response time, this means the crazy still kills just as many as if the had 30 round magazines!

So which has the better chance of a response time, police who unless your lucky get there in 12 minutes, not preventing the bad guys from firing off 200 rounds of ammuntion in that time, or someone who can walk out of their classroom, know the facility layout and people, and engage the shooter.

Which is better, several dead or dozens dead?

Which costs more since you antis are so obsessed with cost?

      • cptmiller132

totaly agree with you jarhead but unfortunatly the mommies wont… no matter what you say you will never convince them to let a teacher or anyone for that matter… to have a firearm near their "babies"

    • fwduptimeman

I guess there is always a low-information wise guy around.
So let me think RIO wise guy. I'll bet you do the following:
      1. lock your house up when you leave.
      2. lock your car.
      3. teach your kids to NOT go anywhere with a stranger.
      4. tell your family to be careful
Israel stopped school shootings by arming the teachers.
When the Guns are taken from the GOOD guys the BAD guys will romp and stomp the GOOD guys into the ground. Chicago is the proof.
I WILL bet that you NOT support the death penalty, but do support turning loose felons and murders on the people.
It is largely the work of adult males from age 18 to 39 with criminal records killing other males of that same age and criminal past.
Chicago's murder rate is 3 TIMES more that the Midwest and the rest of IL. This is Chicago's problem. Why is it the big cities have this problem? What are they doing?

  • zaynab

Liberal laws have made it very difficult to lock up the dangerously mentally ill. That's why the massacre in Connecticut happened. You have to open fire before they lock you up. Taking away people's guns increased gun violence in England, for a powerful video about that see… . The video improves a lot as it goes on.

    • Sound&Fury

Wow. Powerful video. I'm definitely going to pass this on. Thanks for sharing the truth.

    • fuzzygracie

The CT massacre is a totally different entity than gang crime.
The CT kid was mentally ill ,gangs are sane people who kill for very simple and primitive reasons : money, drugs, territory ,power, more guns ,alcohol and "respect."

  • crackerjack

France, Britian, Japan,Germany, Spain, Switzerland, Italy…..all have derelict inner cities and gangs. Frontpage Mag. regularly spotlights Europe's downfall and the takeover of Islamic gangs. Yet europes inner cities have a minute fraction of US cities gun related homicide. What makes US inner cities and gangs so uniqe? Easy access to firearms.

    • bluffcreek1967

Nope! The prevalence of feral blacks who have been duped by liberalism, and who morally depraved. This is always what happens when blacks dominate in numbers any city. Sad to say, in America we have a black problem.

      • Ghostwriter

No,bluffcreek1967,blacks aren't the problem, the gangs are the problems. They harass the innocent blacks just like they do everybody else.

        • RoguePatriot6

          Thank you!!!!!
Here people go again with blaming a race. That's one of the reasons why some of these problems wound up as monsterous as they are now.
At one time, drugs were just a poor neighborhood black problem and alot of people were fine with that, well maybe not the blacks who wanted nothing to do with it. Funny how that quickly evolved into EVERYBODY'S problem.
This isn't race related but it's linked to an attitude. AIDs used to be a GAY problem, funny how that quickly evolved into EVERYONE'S problem.
Before the United States of America became involved with WWII, the holocaust and the Axis powers were just a Jew or German problem. We read about how that went.
Now, don't get me wrong, I'll be the first to tell you that the biggest killers of blacks are blacks but pin the crime issue on blacks is just another divice for division. And if we start doing this the left is going to exploit it.

      • margaret frank

Depends where you are, in Phoenix its Mexicans. During prohibition it was Italians. Things change.

    • RoguePatriot6

What makes them such a threat is that all of the guns are in their hands, for one. The other is that Europe actually enforces their laws and treat criminals (unless your Islamic) as a criminal and victims as actual victims. We on the other hand no longer do this.

    • Mary Sue

they're NOT getting them LEGALLY, stupid! In fact the inner city laden cities have the strictest gun control of all. You can't even OWN a gun in some of them (Including washington, DC) legally! Didn't seem to make a hell of a lot of difference, did it? Face it, criminals anywhere will get guns, and there's other ways to be killed by gangs.

    • fuzzygracie

They are funded by Mexican drug cartels, have a huge population of repeat offenders / felons to train more criminals and are taught to not respect the laws and morals .

    • welldoneson

using europe as an example of anything other than stupid is itself quite stupid. they have just as many injuries and deaths as any US city. besides, the question is moot. Americans have a constitutional right to have guns so if you don't like that, fine. you'll break up the country if u try to change it.

    • Mike the Limey

The last mass shooting in the UK happened 30 months ago & left 12 dead & as many again wounded.
The weapons used were a bolt action .22 rimfire rifle & a single barrel shotgun.
I doubt any but the most rabid gun grabbers sees those kinds of firearm as targets for legislation.
You cannot legislate against insanity, nor can you use laws to prevent criminality. They are there to punish the criminal when caught & to protect the public from dangerous felons – something they consistently fail to do by releasing violent offenders early to free up space for the addicts & mentally ill who should be elsewhere.

    • Warlord

Check the actual murder rates, not just the "gun" murder rates for those countries. Much more knife killings there. Heavy islamic populations, that are knife cultures, causes more knife homicides. Punish criminals, don't demonize the innocent for criminal transgressions. Criminals do not care about the laws, period, and to disarm the law abiding, merely makes them easy prey for the jackals of society.

  • Deep Space

"Our murder rate now largely consists of criminals killing criminals." This is possibly so and I have often wondered how our murder rate would look if we subtracted the top ten urban killing fields from the totals. However, this whole debate has started not because of criminals killing criminals and its been incredibly difficult for conservatives (and I generally consider myself a member of this group) to respond appropriately. In fact, the only responses to Newtown and its aftermath including comments that I have read (which may reduce the viability of my critique) have been either a kind of red faced, chest thumping bombasticy or a smirking, name calling rant against liberals. When someone remarks – as did one conservative site commentor – that "the only real assault is against my rights" I just have to ask how much that statement characterizes us as a whole and is the gap so wide that even murdered children aren't enough for us to pause in our quest to parade "my rights'. Oh, I almost forgot, I need all those rifles to help out when the government starts behaving tyrannically so my brother-in-law and I can become suburban warlords.

    • ouderkirk

At what point are you willing to surrender my rights? If you would like to surrender yours, you are welcome to that. If you don’t want to own guns that’s your prerogative.

I for one, will not give up my AR’s or my AK’s. Not for you or anyone else, .

Those weapons are an insurance policy for my freedom. I could care less about your freedom as you have shown little to no desire to defend it.

    • Daniel Greenfield

This article is a look at the facts surrounding gun violence in America, which gun controllers have used to make the argument.

School shootings are an aberration created by media coverage and should not be used as an excuse to dismantle any part of the Bill of Rights.

I would like to honestly understand why the left could argue that 3,000 dead should not in any way allow us to compromise the Constitution, but why a school shooting in Newtown should?

      • RoguePatriot6

It's simple. Liberalism has always used "victims" as a spearhead for demonizing those with conservative views. Examples:

When conservatives want to cut some of welfare programs you always hear, "You see, those racist Conservative/Republicans want to hold minorities back" A real good example of that was "food stamp president". The media immediately tagged it as a racial slur.

When those who still believe that marriage is a sacred bond between a man and woman speak up, "You see, those bigotted Conservative/Republicans hate homosexuals"

When those who get tired and frustrated at the media treating Islam as the special needs child who can't help but act dysfunctional and speak up about it, "You see, those conservative Islamophobes are just racist and prejudiced against those who aren't Christians"

This is no different. If you are for the 2nd Amendment then, "Those ruthless conservatives don't care about the safety and welfare of those poor kids", yet these same Godless vipers, who are point fingers, would issue your kids condoms without your consent and teach them that sexual perversion is pefectly okay along with providing a means for them to get an abortion with you ever finding out about it.

I've read "Never let a good crisis go to waste" alot. It should read, "Never let a victim go unexploited".

        • Mrs. Pharaoh

Spot on! RoguePatriot6 you have summed it up very succintctly.

        • guest

Well said sir. This entire presidency is constructed around red herrings and manufactured crisises and that includes THE Cliff. The country went off its rails quite awhile ago and there is no singular point in time or event when this has taken place.

        • Margaret Frank

I think we need to stop fighting amongst ourselves. The problem of violence in this country needs to be solved. I dont agree with Obama. No law could have prevented Sandy Hook. I know many people with guns who will never shoot anyone, unless its dinner. The problem we have is being to angry with one another to address any of the issues. This country is becoming like a bad marriage, we scream and yell at each other and solve nothing. A bad marriage with no prospect of divorce. I think our politicians would do a better job if they were not posturing for the camera, always trying to score points with those who are far right and far left. At some point we have to
quiet time and realise we have problems that need to be addressed.

      • margaret frank

Sadly Daniel, few white people care about black youths killing each other. However, 20 children, now that gets attention. I feel for the parents of those young children, however, many of the fatalities in Chicago were little more than children. Poor black mothers and fathers feel the same pain. The media does not play up the deaths of the Chicago youth. No rating incentive. Perhaps if our media had given the same footage to those being murdered on Urban streets every weekend, then the issue would have been addressed sooner. After reading these posts I think people have taken sides and neither side cares about the issue of violence , what fuels it and how to stop it.

    • UCSPanther

I will not give up my VZ 52/57 or Hakim just because some drug-addled gang hoodlums have a go at it and kill a bunch of bystanders in the process, any more than I will give up any of my rights, freedoms and lawfully acquired and owned property because some idiot lefty in la-la land says so.

    • fuzzygracie

There are many ideas the conservatives have put forth and repeatedly stated.

Such as mental illness. Violence on TV ,in rap music and movies.

If you choose to ignore or discount every post that mentions those or think they are "red faced, chest thumping bombasticy or a smirking, name calling rants" then you are ignoring the reasons behind the killings .

    • welldoneson

deep space, where you think nobody can hear you trolling. taking guns away from law abiding citizens because some defective little shiite stole guns from his dumb-as-a-post mommy is actually completely stupid.

    • Jarhead1982

So when are you antis going to help fund more bounty squads to chase down the 1 million outstanding felony warrants in the US eh?

When are you going to fix the BATF who has prosecuted less than1% of the 1.83 mil felons & crazies rejecetd since 1994? Or how they fail to catch anyone using a fake id, or the 95% of felons who dont even attempt to buy from a licensed source to begin with, or the BATF refusal to allow civilian access to the NICS for anonymous private sales checks?

When are you going to hold the politicians responsible for their failure starting back in the 1970's when they closed down mental hospitals and mainstreamed the mentally ill into society, which then no one wanted the needed halfway houses in their neighborhoods and the politcians did nothing. We have no wonder where those cuckoos went.

Then of course the politcians refusal to fund and resource the mental health reporting function to the NICS with only 1.7 mil records and 23.15 mil severely mentally ill in the US.

Amazing how over 92% of killings by illegal use of a firearm are committed by career criminals, gang members, suiciders & crazies, with approx half the remaining murders due to domestic violence!

Haynes vs US 390, 85, 1968 & the 5th amendment rule that 85% of the existing 22,417 gun control laws dont apply to felons & crazies because the requirement of identification violates the right of no self incrimination.

Man, you antis have all the wrong answers, yet all you intend to do is implement laws that by law, dont affect the crazies and felons. A solution that has been proven to fail again, and again, and again, and again, and again, and again…….

Yeah, reaallllyyyyy hard not to smirk at idiots!

      • margaret frank

I am a Liberal, Obama voting white woman who agrees with you. I do not see how implementing more gun laws will prevent the killing. No law could have prevented Sandy Hook. I have lived with people who owned guns their whole lives without incident. In this issue I disagree with Obama who has been lulled into believing he can do something to stop the violence. If they could do a house to house search on the south side of Chicago they could prevent at least 50% of the killings. However, that would be profiling. Had Europe been armed like we are, no way could Hitler have marched through one country after another murdering every one in his path. So I agree with you. The problem is not the Gun. Reminds me of a PETA recommendation to euthenize and make illegal to breed all Pit Bulls. We can"t train the owners, so get rid of the dog. Same with the gun. As I said, I agree with you.

    • Margaret Frank

Thank you, a voice of reason. Because no matter how much we berate liberals we cannot explain the less than 60 deaths by gun in Britain compared to the 12,000 here. They have the same problems with drugs and gangs, just fewer guns. No one wants to take away hunting rifles, and it is a given that most people who own guns are responsible, law abiding persons. However, that statistic makes me pause and think, something must be done. (population of Britiain is 50 million approx. compared with our approx. 300m)

    • Margaret Frank

Right On….If guns are not the problem then let us peacefully try and find out what is.

  • CatKD2DBI

It's especially a parental problem…starting from decades back. Mix that with government interference and you've got the perfect brew for an irresponsible and violent society.

    • Mary Sue

The ghetto especially seems to have been immersed in the culture of "Head in the sand parenting". Black and Hispanic single mothers (or grandmothers of children of Single Mothers, as the case may be, who themselves may also be Single Mothers!) go into heavy denial that their son or grandson may be an emerging Future Carjacker Of America.

Fatherlessness is the entire root of the problem, as such problems may be seen in white single parent families as well, though even in such situations the father is usually in the child's life to some degree. But added to the ghetto situation is the enshrined belief that The Man is going to "keep them down", and that the Po-lice are the enemy, and snitches get stitches. When the Family is left in shambles, the Gang becomes the Family, which is how you wind up with very young children (as I recall from several years ago) dying in gun shootouts, as participants of said shootouts, not mere innocent bystanders.

  • Gylippus

Happy New Year Daniel. Let's hope that 2013 will be the leftist's high tide.

  • lsatenstein

The Gang Problem is easy to fix. Legalize Drugs, and have the Fed or State governments reap taxes from its sale.
With legal drugs, gangs will evaporate. Pushing drugs will not bring profits. What will be left is extortion, which I believe would be on a smaller scale, with fewer and much smaller gangs involved.

    • Daniel Greenfield

Legalize crack cocaine and heroin? Unlikely, and aside from the general devastation, the gangs aren't going anywhere.

Gangs rule parts of the world where there is no drug enforcement. There will always be a traffic in other things, including human beings.

      • Mary Sue

I suddenly find myself wondering why Rev. Jesse Jackson is such an idiot. I mean, really. He was whining about 40% Unemployment in the inner city of Chicago. WELL DUH, of course there is, if gangs are taking out "protection" from businesses that exist in their "territory", and then the businesses close up shop and get the heck out of Dodge, it's no wonder! And yet the RRrrrrrrrrrevrrrrrrend Jacksonnnnnnnn doesn't seem to make the connection. Is he really that brain dead, or is he doing it on purpose?

    • Tina Trent

That would be nice. But it's the opposite of what happened in California.

Legalizing medical marijuana — not even pills, cocaine, meth — actually brought violent gangs running to the state to set up shop.

There is literally no better way for gangsters to launder money than to sell legal pot. And the mom and pop, tax paying pot growers — that desired demographic — were the losers, along with taxpayers who found they didn't quite like living with a pot dispensary on every corner.

One thing Chicago might do is stop paying "reformed" gang members to do "gang prevention outreach" — they sunk a cool million into one of those ridiculous schemes this year — the money's gone but the programs sort of never started, or did no good, or something.

    • Mary Sue

I hate to burst your bubble, but the primary function of gangs is not to distribute drugs. It is one of their primary sources of revenue, but if that's taken away or diminished, they'll be doing more of what the Mafia calls "protection". (not that they don't already do so now, but they'd have to really step it up).

Gangs instead function as a sort of a family, an organization of individuals from messed up families that go all Lord of the Flies meets Charles Dickens. For better or worse the gang members see themselves as part of a "family" in the gang, and their fellow members are highly trusted, as family members should be. I believe they learned this from the Mafia.

    • Ghostwriter

Well,Isatenstein,I've got a question for you. Do you want your kids using drugs or do you care more about the drugs than your kids?

    • Margaret Frank

I totally agree. Legalize drugs, tax them, a win/win for all of us except those who make a living from selling drugs and killing. However, I wonder, why have we not legalized drugs? During prohibition politicians and police personnel were in the pockets of the criminals. With drugs generating far more revenue, in the many billions, one has to wonder. Personally, I do not think anything has changed. I think the revenue goes all the way up to the near top of both parties. Otherwise, there would be more of an incentive to legalize them.

  • wgswst

The fact that crime rates correlate positively with race, is something the lefties are desperate to downplay. Bravo for taking steps toward admitting this truth in your column. I hope others will take courage from it, and continue the discussion.

Only if we are able to face this and discuss it openly, is there any chance for change.

    • Mary Sue

actually it correlates very strongly with Identity Politics.

  • Danny Lemieux

The one thing that is missing in this otherwise excellent analysis is that it is rich suburban whites (mostly but not all young whites) that support the inner-city gang culture with their insatiable needs for drugs and prostitutes. It is also inner-city politicians and businesses that overtly condemn but covertly encourage the inner-city gang culture, because of the enormous transfer of economic wealth that flows from the suburbs to the inner-city parishes and precincts and into the pockets of politicians and local businesses. So the next time you encounter a young, spoiled suburban high school kid, Chad or Trixie with a wad of cash and a recreational drug habit, understand that you are looking are directly at the core foundation of inner city violence.

The problem of inner city violence is also cultural – we, in the United States, have three large historically violent cultural groups: Scotch Irish, poor southern blacks (which Thomas Sowell defines as "black rednecks" and Hispanic. In these groups, violence is viewed as a legitimate tool of negotiation for individuals to obtain what they want. If you Google "the world's most dangerous cities", it becomes evident that the overwhelming number of them are located in Latin America. We have been importing their culture of violence into our cities for decades now.

Of course, with the Liberal/Left defining the rules of political correctness in our discourse, we are unable as a nation confront, debate and resolve these issues. This is why really nothing can be done to solve this problem and it will continue to be a tool utilized by the Left to assert ever greater control over the vaste majority of citizens that live peaceably and productively in our country.

    • Questions

White suburban youths are merely enablers of thugs. Blacks are the real thugs. As for Thomas Sowell, I know all about the bad behavior of Albion's Fourth Seed — the Scots-Irish/Border English Celtic Protestants — having lived in Southwest Virginia for a good while. Still, they're not nearly as violent as the blacks.

      • Carolina Ulsterman

Oh, yeah, lots of us Scots-Irish gangbangers running around, hopped up on Bushmills whiskey, wearing our kilts pulled down to our buttcracks, blasting bagpipe and fiddle music from our woofers and doing drive bys with our AK's.

        • Questions

I'm DEFENDING your people from Sowell's charge that the Fourth Seed are simply the white equivalent of blacks. One of my favorite books, as a matter of fact, is "The Mark of the Scots," by Duncan Bruce (1997). The author even personally autographed it for me. Most of the Ulstermen descendants I like. Yes, there are some nasty ones, but in the larger scheme of things, they're far better and more decent than the blacks.

    • Guest

"The one thing that is missing in this otherwise excellent analysis is that it is rich suburban whites (mostly but not all young whites) that support the inner-city gang culture with their insatiable needs for drugs and prostitutes."

What a cowardly straw man that you've created, with literally zero evidence for this conclusion. Having grown up in an area that straddles a substantial expanse of ghetto, and having worked my way into a local privileged school, you are 100% wrong that white kids have even a remote effect on inner city drug traffic and violence. Your statement leads me to believe that your a sheltered liberal moron without a real world clue.

Your next statement that attempts to link Irish Scotts with violence in general, let alone the type of violence levied by other groups, confirms my conclusion. You are either a transparently desperate liberal propaganda tool with weak writing skills, or you live in a cave wherein little reality ever ventures. I would say 'nice try' to sign off, but it was actually a transparent and exceedingly pathetic attempt. How embarrassing for you.

    • Margaret Frank

I think you forgot the Italians. I have never heard the Scotch Irish referred to as a violent group. I should know I grew up on the Scottish border with England and we had zero crime. Several of my ancestors were Scotch, and they did not have a violent bone amongst them. I fail to see how you can seperate out the Scotch/Irish. Many of the new immigrants to our shores turned to crime and the violence that goes with it out of necessity. Did you some how forget the Italian Mafia, or the current problems with the Russian Mafia on the East Coast. You also overlooked the Germans. The masters of murder.

  • clarespark

Generation Y is decadent with respect to both drugs and promiscuous sex. It is they who support violence in the inner city and/or find bad boys and bad girls cool. See…. "GIRLS, or the new Lost Generation." I blame the 60s generation and their sick notions of emancipation.

    • bluffcreek1967

I agree that the 60s generation contributed far too much to our current state. Much, though not all of it, can be traced to what occurred among our young people during the 60s revolution. In their attempt to emancipate themselves from all moral and traditional boundaries, Leftists have enslaved themselves and caused enormous harm on the rest of our country.

The gun grabbers want ultimate mass confiscation of cvilian firearms. They are working incrementally,
trying to assure gun owners that they merely want some "sensible. . .reasonable" restrictions. Feinstein & Company think that their lives are inherently more valuable than the lives of ordinary U.S. citizens. It's o.k. for them to have fulltime armed security details and concealed-carry permits. It's those "little people" who can't be trusted. Our Founding Fathers knew much better.

  • al222

this article begin in the middle of the problem. the beginning of the problem is the wholesale destruction of the nuclear family that makes gang culture and all of its dysfunction irresistible. yet as is tiresomely predictable, that too is the result progressive ideology, from the Great Society et al, to the pernicious notion that all definitions of "family" are equally valid

    • ILJ777

al222, you hit the nail squarely on the head with the best comment of all: the problem is, the fathers are all missing. If we can get black and Hispanic fathers to spend time with their children, to teach them about right and wrong, to simply love them…the gang problem will be gone. So, we have to look at: Where are the fathers, and why?

  • Lost_Lenore

Note the immigration factor, mentioned in passing. While there has always been a certain amount of gang violence perpetrated by non-immigrant populations, a sizable share of it continues to be immigrant based. We're importing much of this and we don't need to. We darn sure don't need it for their labor, do we?

    • Margaret Frank

In Chicago, it is not the immigrant population causing the violence. It is the beakdown of the nuclear family, drugs and poverty amongst the African American southside population. I live in an area that is home to every kind of immigrant, it is like the United Nations and we have almost no crime. Most are newly arrived and seek only to make a decent and honest living. As our ancestors did when they arrived.

  • hikerdude

My guess is alll the perps in the stated murder stats of the cities voted for the B.O. .
The worst is yet to come .

    • Mary Sue

the ones that bothered to vote, yeah.

Ever noticed that the prison populations identify overwhelmingly as Democrat, and the Democrats are trying to get voting rights for convicted felons? Coincidence? I think not!

  • bluffcreek1967

And why does America have a gang problem? It's because America has a black problem (Hispanic problem too!). Whites, admittedly, have their own gangs too – but the thug/gang culture among blacks is an especially acute problem that's so much a part of them as a people.

One might be tempted to excuse it as a symptom of poverty or "institutional racism," but their are many ethnic groups throughout the world who suffer poverty yet they're not killing each other off in great numbers as a normative aspect of their culture or communities. The gang culture among blacks is also not due to the racism of whites. The white man isn't forcing them to murder each other or sell drugs. Blacks in America have ample opportunity to succeed, and every basic need is available to them via the nanny government. Yet the vast majority remain ignorant, uneducated and resentful toward whites. The greatest enemy to the black man isn't whites, it's blacks themselves.

When are we going to finally admit to ourselves that the prevalence of crime, including their deep-rooted gang culture, is a reflection inherently of who blacks are? The gang problem and murder rate in Chicago is indicative of what happens whenever a large population of blacks dominate a city. This explains in part why whites justifiably become concerned when too many blacks move into their neighborhoods – and blacks have earned ounce of the suspicion they get.

    • Questions

Finally, someone here (besides myself) gets it right. It's about race. I'll grant that there are nasty, menacing whites in Chicago, especially among the Irish and the Poles, but they don't come close to the vicious, infantile behavior of the blacks.

    • Ghostwriter

Stop with the race talk, you two. Not every black is a gang member! It IS NOT about race!!!! Black people are as much victims by their own people as much as anything else. Your racist nonsense ISN'T helping one bit!

      • Questions

Gimme a break, as John Stossel might say. Nobody is saying that all blacks are bad any more than all whites are good. That's a classic copout. The fact is that the frequency with which blacks engage in pathological behavior is far, far higher than it is for whites.

Yes, blacks are victims of their own people. Most of the victims of black murderers are themselves black (all too often, by the way, via "disputes" between criminals). But a quite a few victims are whites unlucky enough to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. How would you like to live in an all-black neighborhood for a year? Let's see how long you get to live.

"Race talk," as you call it, is reality talk. To speak of "urban Democratic machines" as the central problem is an evasion. Democrats for decades have run Seattle and Portland, and yet those cities' murder rates are but a fraction of Chicago's. I'll give you one guess as to why.

        • curmudgeon

citizen: " i am so tired of supporting lazy racist blacks on welfare"

indignant, holier by far than thou liberal: "but you are wrong! over half the welfare recipients are white!"

citizen: "ok. you are right. welfare is a white problem. lets get rid of welfare, and make all those lazy white people work, instead of living at taxpayer expense!"

liberal: " you are a racist! you want to starve the poor black people

citizen: "but you said welfare is a white phenomenon"

drooling liberal: dont confuse me with facts.

        • PhiloTexan78

I'm white, and I did live in a "black neighborhood" for more than a year. In fact, I grew up there. It was in the "Stop Six" area of Fort Worth, Tx, not that that matters. It was a fairly violent place in the mid 90's, and I have seen my share of violence in the streets. What I remember most about those times wasn't that there was a huge gulf between the races, but that most people held the notion that "we're all just folk". There were gangs in our neighborhoods (Bloods, Crips, Latin Kings etc., etc.), but apart from the Latin Kings, none of the gangs were really dominated by one race of individuals. So to blame ANYTHING on race is to me a copout. Nobody can say "But, I'm jus' a po' black man.", or "I can't get an education because my 12 member mexican family can't afford it." Everyone has to start taking personal responsibility for their actions, and stop blaming their plights on outside sources. There is always a choice to make, whether it be bad or good. Some choices suck, but they are the right ones to make. I have been penniless, homeless, and malnutritioned, but never once did I make the decision to get what I absolutely needed by illegal means. I made the choice that I would either live or die by being moral and law abiding. That choice sucked, but I made it.

Bottom line: Claiming race as your problem is a copout. Everyone needs to make the choice to be good or moral everyday or not, and except what the consequences may be as their own doing.

      • mike

I live in chicago and it is always a black person you can't deny it i know some white people in worse neighborhoods then some blacks and they stay out of trouble

    • UCSPanther

It's the culture that is the problem, not the race.

      • bluffcreek1967

Nonsense! Their 'culture' (if one wishes to call it that) is a reflection of them as a racial people. This violent black culture is not limited to blacks in America who live in the inner cities. It's a world-wide phenomena in every country that has large populations of black people. They are, by nature, prone to violent criminal conduct, opportunist thieves, low IQs, disinterested in formal education, impulsive, and rather simple-minded people. This is the hard truth that most people are unwilling to acknowledge.

People naively wish to blame black criminality on everything else (e.g., the culture, liberalism) than the very people themselves. We need to recognize that black criminal pathology is the result of who they are by nature. Granted, culture and lack of education certainly contributes to their predicament, but ultimately they are responsible for their conduct and their deplorable 'culture.' Naturally, there are exceptions as with most things, but far too many blacks have earned the suspicions that people world-wide have of them.

        • Ghostwriter

Not ALL of them,bluffcreek1967. You continue this race talk but it's STILL wrong. You and those like you blame every black person on the planet for the actions of a bunch of rotten apples. You tar every black person on the planet for the actions of criminals. Not every German during World War II liked the Nazi party but they suffered for their crimes along with those who were.
You deserve to be called a racist,bluffcreek1967. That's because you don't look at a person's character, you look at his or her skin color and automatically see a criminal. To me,blacks are people too,not the KKK-inspired image you seem to revel in. Many blacks don't like the criminal element or their enablers like Jesse Jackson or Rev. Al "The Loudmouth" Sharpton. For idiots like them, there are those like Herman Cain,Clarence Thomas,Thurgood Marshall,Condolezza Rice, and others like them. If you would get away from your Klan meetings and go out into the real world, you'd learn that. I prefer to look at a black person and see what TYPE of person he or she is. You don't. When you look at a black person, you see a stereotype, not a living, breathing person with thoughts and feelings of his or her own.

One of Martin Luther King's better sayings was that we should look at the content of a person's character not the color of that person's skin. You do the opposite. You look at the person's skin color and not the person's character. And judging by the content of your character, you don't have a lot of content. Just hatred and bigotry, with nothing more to back it up than that.

          • bluffcreek1967

There's so much wrong with your post, I almost don't know where to begin. But here's a few things to consider: (1) I've made clear many times in my post that NOT all blacks are criminals, but that a large percentage of them are. The criminal statistics also support it. (2) I won't say what I do for a living, but I deal with many blacks each day in the course of my employment. I know black people very well, and this is not a recent knowledge either. (3) My opinions about blacks in general is the direct result, in fact, of looking past their skin color and looking at the content of their character just like MLK wanted us to. And that's why I've reached the conclusions I have. It's their character! (4) I've said in many posts that there are many decent blacks, and some that I admire greatly (e.g., Thomas Sowell, Larry Elder, Walter Williams). But as whole (which many perceptive blacks themselves will admit), they are a very low IQ people who have a propensity toward crime. This is why no one really wants to live in our inner cities with them. (5) It's easy to label me a KKK member or supporter, but it's not true. There are many whites just like me who wish no harm to blacks, but yet are honest and real when it comes to have blacks conduct themselves. Many of us are tired of the lies and pretending things aren't actually as we see them before our very eyes. I urge you, sir, to be more thoughtful and intellectually careful in how you reply to those with whom you differ.

        • A 22 Year Old Man

Bluffcreek, you would do very well to read this article by Daniel Greenfield, which explains why it looks to you like blacks are such a problem:

          • bluffcreek1967

Thank you. I read it and it definitely has some valid points. The writer misses some things, but I guess it's a matter or emphasis. If the 'black problem' was simply limited to the inner cities of the US, I might be inclined to see things differently. But the fact that the 'black problem' is a worldwide phenomena wherever large populations of blacks reside, tells me this is something inherent, deep-rooted and reflective of them as a people. Others who are much more informed than me have reached the same or similar conclusions. I tend to think the 'black problem' is collection of different factors – namely, genes, low IQ, culture and morality.

We are trying to 'fit' blacks into the civilized, white man's world, and it's not working. Whites must come to the realization NOT all humans are equal, possess the same abilities, possess the same IQ levels, share cultures that are equal in value, and on it goes. This does NOT mean blacks should be treated wrongly or that harm should come to them. It just means we need to recognize genuine differences between the races. It should also imply that we cause more problems for ourselves by allowing black Africans and Somalis to immigrate here.

          • Margaret Frank

You sound like Adolf Hitler and his argument for killing Jews There are many African Americans that out score Caucasians on IQ tests. There is no validity for anything you say.
White people, and I am white, have exploited people of color and kept them down in every country. Not only Caucasians, Arabs do it also. Given another 100 years of liberation we will see the black cultures catch up to us. I have no doubt.

    • Margaret Frank

Currently it is crime in black areas that is causing the problem. in Chicago. However, in both Chicago and the Suburbs, we have many black communties with low crime rates. The crime in Chicago during prohibition was caused by the Italians, at least they garnered the most attention. It is unfair to blame all of any group. I have to question how much any of you care about black men killing other black men.
Actually, it is the killing of 20 6 and 7 year olds by a white man that has fueled this debate.

    • otbricki

Better examine poverty level rather than race. It turns out that the poor southern states have higher murder rates than the northern states despite cities like Chicago. It turns out that the real correlation is with economic status.

    • harold

The fact is that southern states have a higher overall murder rate than northern states even with cities like Chicago. It is all about poverty. Race is irrelevant.

    • Trailblazer

It is quite obvious that racist viewpoints have clouded your ability to rationally think about the problem of violence. Might I add the uproar about gun violence always occurs when there is a deadly mass shooting which often times the perpetrator is a white suburbanite. Guns and gangs go way back in American history back to the bootleggers in Chicago and other major cities and even further back to the likes of Jesse James and Billy the Kid. Violence and the human lives it claims is rooted at the core of a human heart that has rejected the grace and love of Jesus Christ. Attempting to point fingers and ignoring the many hundreds and even thousands of lives lost to gun violence doesn't make the problem go away. Mass shootings have taught us that no community is "safe". It seems to me thatt many of you need to be set free from bigotry and discrimination to first deal with your own problem so that you can more properly discern the caos and confusion in the lives of others.

The Muslim Brotherhood, Obama and Clinton’s top favorites, have been placed into extremely powerful positions in the American government. The Muslim Brotherhood stated goal in America is the DESTRUCTION of civilization and global Islamic conquest. What kind of future is planned for America by Obama?

    BARENAKEDISLAM Sep 25 2012
Barack Hussein Obama told the UN General Assembly today: “The future must not belong to those who slander the prophet of Islam.”
I consider that statement a death threat to me and all anti-Islam bloggers, authors, and activists by the President of the United States.

England Warns America: Don’t Let Them Take Your Guns

England grabbed its citizens guns in 1997. Crime skyrocketed as the law-abiding were disarmed. The English citizens have a message for Americans — Don’t give up your guns!

    AmericanThinker September 20, 2012
Why does Homeland Security need 1.4 billion rounds of ammunition?

The Department of Homeland Security has purchased 1.4 billion rounds of ammunition during the last six months. This includes 450 million rounds of .40 hollow point, 200 million rounds of .223 rifle ammunition, and 176,000 rounds of .308 168-grain hollow point boat tail (HPBT) that is used almost exclusively as ammo for sniper rifles.

    Obama’s infamous 2008 quote,
We cannot continue to rely on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives that we’ve set. We’ve got to have a civilian national security force that’s just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded.

We must never forget that tyrants throughout modern history (Pol Pot, Hitler, Stalin and Mao) always disarmed their opponents before rounding them up and sending them to the killing fields. We must never forget.

The ammo is for DOMESTIC use in America against Americans!

Gun control and the amazing Batman coincidence
    by casualsunited

Have a look at the links below. (You may have to copy and paste it into your browser as wordpress is on the blink)

Check this out chaps. The theory is that the US government wants to get peoples guns off them so they are behind this. The Batman references are weird don't you reckon?

    Also this

Just like the British Government connected Dunblane shootings which they used to get legally owned guns off the streets.

The American Government desperately want to take guns off its citizens so they are helpless against tyranny. When you remove legally held guns only the criminals (and tyrants) will have them.

Check out the links above and judge for yourselves if something dodgy goes on here.

Black on black crime, black on white crime, high rate of drug addiction in black communities, black illiteracy, black dependence on welfare and generational government assistance, black racism toward whites, blacks 'disenfranchised,' and on and on! Do these people ever take responsibility for themselves? Why is so much that is negative attached to them as a people? What does all of this tell us about the nature and character of black people? Why is it that blacks, by and large, do not succeed in spite of ample opportunities given to them at every turn? Why are blacks, as a people, utterly and continually dependent upon nanny government for all of their basic needs? Why are blacks and crime almost synonymous in much of our thinking? Is this perception something they have earned or is due to 'institutional racism'?

In truth, many white Americans are suffering from negro fatigue.

  • Marvin Fox

Guns/Gangs is a very truthful discussion of the the problem. The conclusions are excellent and necessary to be used by our Republic.
The one problem not mentioned is that our Republic is always governed by a minority political party that believes its mandate has been formulated by a minority of citizens who voted it into office. Neither political party has a mandate that exceeds the boundary of our Constitution. The same Constitution they gave their personal oath to uphold and serve.
The American people have the legal, Constitutional, muscle to stop both Parties in their tracks. There are two major problems with the peoples use of that muscle.
First: most of us need to be informed that we have it.
Second: we must learn to support each other when it is used.
The government seems to have it all. They use our money to install their corruption. They use their appointees to escape the penalties for their corruption. They use our Constitutional liberties, and money, to teach us that their corruption is really beneficial.
The people are gaining ground on them and they know it. The corruption is in a last ditch stand to keep its contorted brand of democracy alive. They are not going to make it. We are awakening to our Christian and Constitutional heritage. When that awakening is finished; they are finished.

I used to live in a suburb of Chicago when I was a kid and I'm saddened by what's been happening there. I'm even more saddened by the racist bilge that I've been seeing. Not every black person is a monster. I wish that idiots like bluffcreek1967 and Questions would stop going to Stormfront and go out into the real world where not every black person is a violent animal. Get with the 21st Century and stop the nonsense!

    • UCSPanther

It's not the race that is the problem. It is the culture, the culture of entitlement and victimhood that is being promoted by the race pimps and statists wanting to ensure a steady stream of dependency.

In the end, when it becomes unsustainable, the Dems will learn the hard way that they created a monster…

      • Questions

Race and culture can't be separated. Even an amateur anthropologist will admit as much.

News flash: I don't visit Stormfront or other neo-Nazi sites for inspiration. I consult social science literature and primary data sources. As an aside, I grew up in an area of suburban St. Louis where blacks moved in en masse. Oh, the stories I could tell you!

    • bluffcreek1967

Ghostwriter, part of your problem is that you don't follow closely to what I and others have said about blacks. You frequently engage in ad-hominem attacks ('idiots,' 'racist,' etc.) which does nothing to further the discussion. Moreover, you often miss the entire point at hand because all you can see is 'racism' and you ignore many of our points of clarification. You accuse us of making sweeping statements about ALL black people, yet I've made it clear repeatedly that I'm speaking in general terms and that NOT all black folks are criminals. It's these simple nuances that you have failed to discern in the discussion. Also, I do not visit Stormfront or Neo-Nazi websites. Lastly, I work with blacks each and every day in my employment, and I know them quite well after many years of constant interaction. Some are decent and kind people, but there is a very large segment of them that care very little for human life (as Chicago and other cities can testify). If you have not done so, I urge you to live among blacks in their communities, interact with them daily for several years in different circumstances, and then tell me if your opinions of them as a people has not truly changed. It will be true eye-opener, I can assure you!

2011 murder rates per 100,000 for some of the mentioned places:

    Colombia = 36
    South Africa = 31
    New Orleans = 24
    Detroit = 10
    Baltimore = 9
    Philadelphia = 8
    St. Louis = 8
    Chicago = 6

  • Asher

Chicago, the LIberal city, has the most gun violence and out of control gangland murders plus the greatest crime rate, the only way to change the violence, is to change the culture…that is what is sadly lacking. Generations repeat what has been taught to them, and they know no difference. In order to change culture, economy, prosperity, you have to be willing to get rid of those legislators, who are for big government, entitlements, and re-distribution of wealth….When a government keeps giving free things to people, who do not work for them, they create dependency, and lack of self-esteem…which only enables division and violence and more of them for the next generations.

  • Joel

Lets face it , you look look at the most dangerous cities in the USA and there is 1 common denominator .

Answer: Blacks are the majority in those cities.

Don’t call me a racist, I’m giving you a fact just like Men are generally taller than Women.

    • Rob

Would I be sexist if I were to point out that most of violent crime is done by men? Would I be condemning all men? If I were a cop, would it be terrible if I focused more on men (profiling) than women when looking for criminals? This argument is about being able to speak about facts vs PC, which says that we can't speak about facts if it might offend someone. As a man, I am not offended by the fact that most crimes are committed by men. It has nothing to do with me as an individual. I make my own reputation. If a woman is nervous when she encounters me on a dark street, I am not going to be offended and think that I am now a victim of sexism, I will simply know that she is scared because we both know that men are more likely to attack a woman. I would instead try to do something that would put her at ease. In the case of black crime, it is obvious to me that blacks are WAY more dangerous than any other race and that, sadly, when an area becomes more black that it will probably become more dangerous. Does it make me a racist to notice this? Ghostwriter would say 'yes, of course he is'. But my part black wife also notices these things. And never would I hold it against my black family members (or my wife) what many other blacks are doing. It is a painful thing to see and acknowledge but denial of facts and trends leads to worse problems.

      • Rob

Correction: As a man, I am not offended if a woman(or anyone else), points out the fact that most crimes are committed by men. It has nothing to do with me as an individual.

  • Ghostwriter

Here's another fact for you,Joel. Not all black people are criminals. You ARE a racist. Just like bluffcreek1967 and Questions.

    • daniela metz

that is right not all blacks are racist, but the bottom line is many black leaders are racist and they preach hate for the devil white race, the panthers call for killin whites and their babies and many young blacks look up to those people, the black caucus will do nothing unless it helps only thier blacks race, if whites ddid the same things blacks do it would be called racist and always is
every thing blacks do is to suport only their race of blacks they could care less about the United States and it is the voices in the black leadership that are shaping the future of young blacks. just look at how blacks looked at the martin-zimmerman situation blacks hate whites so much they just had to make this into a white on black racist crime, black leaders immediatly called for pay back of whites but not one time called for payback for hispanics. blacks hate whites but they need to keep Hispanics on their side and they need to get every race to hate whitey as much as blacks do. they even have many whites hating whites

    • bluffcreek1967

Ghostwriter likes to engage in ad-hominem attacks because he's got nothing more intelligent to contribute to the conversation. Nobody is saying that ALL blacks are criminals, so again you have missed the point. Incidentally, in Larry Elder's book, 'Ten Things You Can't Say in America,' he has a chapter on how blacks are more racist than whites. And you know what? He's right!

In the years following prohibition, the gangsters became the refined citizens of the day. They became legal, had families, sold booze, paid taxes, and opened gambling casinos in Vegas. And of course Prostitution.
So, the next generation will do likewise, and become the next generation of politicians or lobbyists.

  • mike

This article doesn't deal with secular trends that account for some of the changes in murder rates. America's murder rate peaked over a decade-and-a-half ago, with about 23,000-25,000 dying annually. The reason for this was simple, a crack epidemic, and a culture of permissiveness that treated felony convictions as a revolving door where the criminal was in and out of prison, and criminals manipulated the system with plea bargains. The high rates of murder started to decline when a number of states instituted minimum sentencing, three strikes and you are out, and when forensics improved so that previously unsolvable crimes could be investigated using DNA evidence.

There was also a cultural change… if murder and other crime rates had stayed at the levels that they were in the early 1960's, then perhaps 400,000 or more lives would have been saved. Think about it this way, more Americans have been murdered in the last 53 years (without referring to govt stats I'm guessing over 700,000) than were died in two world wars, Korea and Vietnam.

One aspect that the media do not want to address, is that the high murder rate is concentrated in a criminal subculture of the Black community. While most Black Americans are law abiding, there is a criminal subset of that community which up until fairly recently accounted for perhaps 40-60% of all murders in America. Interesting also, is the media's failure to address that while most crime is intra-racial, most of the interracial crime and interracial murders between the black and the white communities is black on white crime, and not white on black crime.

Of course there are other factors, but that will have to wait for another time.

    • E

Saying that the majority of homicides in this demographic are facilitated by a criminal subset I believe, while tempting, is a ultimately fallacy and unintentionally weakens your argument. You are implying that the murder rate in that population is due to a premeditated choice to join the criminal class. While sometimes true, I don’t believe that that is the case for a large number of homicides in this demographic (half or more). I would wager that half or more of these homicides are impulsive, with no prior premeditation or very little of it. This alternative model could be loosely verified by cross referencing the number of prior convictions of convicted first-time killers, if any, to see if any were from premeditated violence or impulsive behavior. Prior crimes of impulse/anger or no prior record for convicted first-time murderers could likely be loosley correlated with no significant homicidal premeditation or, alternately, homicide for emotional reasons rather than for criminal gain or for reasons of inter-criminal competition. If true, think about what that important change in nuance means.

      • Really

You used the phrase ‘I would wager’ and ‘I don’t believe’ to go up against the FACTS of the argument withing the article. Facts are such a pest to those who deny the truth.

      • waltinseattle

  • simplulo

Strange that this article mentioned drugs in passing but not as the basis of the gangs' activity and raison d'être (stranger still in an article about Chicago, home of Al Capone, considering that the US murder rate fell by 50% the year Prohibition was repealed), and it failed to mention environmental lead at all:

Ignoring such causes just gives ammunition to the gun-grabbers. If conservatives were even semi-competent they could easily seize the moral high ground here.

  • Domus Canus.

I lived in London for many years and returned a few years ago for a short visit to see my brother. It resembled some African slum as the open borders assisted by the left had allowed people in who had no notion of ever integrating, would always be a burden to the taxpayer and had brought their own form of cultural baggage with them. This baggage includes guns, knives, drugs and gangs, subjugation of women via Sharia Law and living off the sweat of those who work for a living. With the left wingers and human rights lovies forever baying for more and more acceptance of what these people represent, it didn't take a genius to figure out why the UK ended up as a depositary for those from the third world, nor why we in the West are expect to toe the line on their rights lest we be referred to as racists. Frankly, I don't care anymore as I cannot accept that we are meant to capitulate to throwbacks from a world that has done precious little to enhance mankind through the centuries other than the endless killings, mayhem and begging bowl we are meant to fill each and every time they see fit not to work for their crust. Banning guns in the UK has not stopped these people from bending the law to get them. Meanwhile, and under no circumstances are the hunters and farmers who are law abiding citizens allowed to possess such dangerous weapons, only criminals have that privilege. Enough.

    • waltinseattle

    The main problem is this:

This is why the drug culture and the illegal guns and gang violence/murder that accompany it will never leave this country. The corporate elite, the gov't and the alphabet agencies all benefit from it.

  • Richard Cancemi

Banning drugs has never defeated drug use. In fact, it has spawned a plethora of drug Cartels that now rival governments. Killing is rampant.

The way to fight the drug war is to legalize and decriminalize all drugs. Emasculate the Cartels and take away the main reason Gangs exist today. The subject is the same as it was for alcohol which was banned and caused pandemonium.

Banning guns would only spawn more criminal gangs. Besides it would be a violation of the Second Amendment of the Constitution! Killings would increase as experience and history tells us.
Government "Bans and Regulations" are not about Correction. Thy are about Power and Control. They are instituted in the interests of people but rather for their own sense of power over people. They fear a righteous uprising against them by an oppressed public.

The Politicians and the wealthy have guards with guns to immediately protect them.
What will good people without guns have to immediately protect themselves from bad people?

Another isue that should be adressed with inner city murder rates is the astonishing number of repeat offender. There felons who haved been jailed two to three times for murder and yet they are still out prison to commit more crimes. Some thing is wrong with this picture. Most civilized parts of th country you go to prison once for murder and thats it you dont get back out.

Urban gang members are making a livable wage selling drugs and occasionally guns. It will be counterproductive if their source of income were curbed by narcotic squads; they would then turn to home invasion and mugging in order to survive. Narcotic cops should shift their attention to busting unaffiliated drug addicts who are on public assistance; their slovenly appearance makes them easy to spot.

  • Mark

Since most civillian gun violence and murders are committed by Obama supporters then maybe if we just keep guns out of their hands and everyone would be happy. We could look at the voting map and determine which districts are predominantly for Obama and ban guns from there. As they support Obama, they would be happy with his decision and we would see the murder rate drop. On the flip side, Conservative gun owners that don’t murder so much would get to keep their guns and continue to use them responsibly. The End.

  • margaret frank

Britain has a population of 50 million approx. They had approx 60 homicides by gun last year. We have a population of approx 300 million We had approx 12,000 homicides last year. They have drug problems and poor ethnic groups. We have to ask ourselves why there is such a huge difference in the amount of
killing. Do they have the same violent television programing? Do their children play video games where they get points for killing people? I dont think gun control will make any difference because no matter what laws had been in effect they would not have prevented Sandy Hook. We need to find answers.

I took a beating now and then, but I would not play into that gang stuff.
We get a lot of boohoo over things like poverty, poor education, etc, but so many haven risen above it and took their own life into their hands. A gangster is not tough, they took the easy way out. The person who fights there way out of that life is the tough one.

I really want to like this article but it has a major glaring problem.

You go on forever about the issue. You break out details and statistics (some of which aren't really comparable, since many of those countries you compared us too have in fact banned guns entirely).

And how do you end it? Not with identifying a solution. Or recommending a change of pace. Or recommending what we should be doing instead. But just with calling Obama evil and then saying "We need to talk about this!" You just did. For a full article. This is the issue – every time we have a conversation about a complex issue, it's never really a conversation. It's just like what you did – "This is a problem! Yep, it sure is a problem all right!" and absolutely no spoken solutions. Maybe THAT is why the media is so obsessed with occasional school shootings. Or maybe that's why politicians do something about it. Because they feel like they can because the conversations actually GO SOMEWHERE.

Ninety percent of all murders are committed by repeat offenders with lengthy criminal records. Contrast that fact with the violent crime rate of concealed weapon permit holders, which is measured in the hundredths of a single percent, and it easy to see where source of the problem is: Inner city gang and drug activity.

Erase those numbers from the murder rate, and we look a lot like Switzerland, where, by the way, nearly every household has a government-issued, REAL machine gun and a cache of ammunition. Switzerland's homicide rate is so low, it is difficult to design a crime chart on which it is visible.

When governments create legislation that targets primarily the law abiding group, they are not only completely failing to address the problem, they are revealing a combination of ignorance and malice toward the purpose, intent and utility of an armed, law abiding populace.

There is absolutely NO reason to trust or cooperate with a legislative body that proposes ill-conceived, disingenuous, and specious legislation that cannot possibly have anything to do with public safety.

  • Frank Turk

Stellar analysis. From your lips to the ears of anyone concerned about the future of this country.

  • Johnny Geetar

It is no secret that liberal-run cities are also the most CORRUPT cities in America. The politicians in these gang cities KNOW there’s a problem, yet fail to act. WHY? Conclusion; Gangs are buying them off with illegal profits to keep law enforcement out of their hair. The attacks on legal gun owners are nothing but deflection, and an attempt to protect their payouts and gravy train sources. Nothing else explains their lack of action. There are no more excuses to render, and no buck to pass…. the Chicago murder rates are out in the stratosphere, along with many other cities per the above, and STILL their politicians do NOTHING! Sorry, but someone is getting paid……
Same with the federal level politicians! We see ALL kinds of money disappearing from the public treasury. And concurrently, we see conservative politicians abide laws that both they AND the people they serve, KNOW are destructive. WHY? We petition them, and we’re ignored. Why? Republicans could have choked Obamacare out of existance 3 years ago, yet have failed to do so. Why? The 2012 election was an outright fraud from top to bottom, yet conservative politicians sat back and allowed the results to go unchallenged. WHY? Because they are being payed off to stand aside! There is no other explanation. That bogus 850 BILLION dollar Community Reinvestment Act of Obama’s vanished like a fart in the breeze and nothing to show for it remains as testament for it’s application and rendering. WHY? The money went SOMEWHERE….. WHERE? I guarantee you, as much as Marxism is abhorrent to conservative politicians, they have made MORE MONEY since Obama took office in payoffs and bribes than they have in their entire careers! This IS the Chicago way! Of COURSE they are only going to give lip service oposition! There IS NO other explanation, folks. Nothing else fits….
Do i have proof? No i don’t. But nothing else explains this political quagmire. There’s been no great catharsis amongst republican politicians toward accomodating the liberal ways….. No great personal revelations that conservatism is cruel and unjust…. so something ELSE is driving this destruction of our country and republican willingness to step aside.
I believe it was Sherlock Holmes who said, when all other possibilities have been discarded, the one possibility remaining, however outlandish, MUST be the truth. ( I paraphrase..) We are being sold down the river, people. And worse, we’re being sold out with our OWN money! Now i ask you; who are the bigger douches? Them….or US?
Yet here we sit, biding our time. Refusing to upset the matrix that we are all heavily invested in, from jobs to mortgages, from our favorite tv shows to little league sports ….. What is it we are waiting for? Someone ELSE to correct the problem while we sit home and watch Survivor and Big Brother? There IS NO political solution to full-on government corruption. Corruption can very rarely be solved politically. The voting booth, as a constitutionally guaranteed mode of redress, has been rendered worthless, and the results can never be trusted again. They will NOT uninstall themselves…. There is only one mode of redress left to us. We all know what that is, but until discomfort, pain, and political restriction becomes more prevalent and dominant in our lives than the benefits we reap of Americanism, perhaps THEN we will collectively find the impetus to finally act. Providing we are not then too weak to answer the call by then…..

  • BBop

    Money, manipulation, cattle-ization.

Our most famous standing rule is the right to bear arms and yet the media and ‘public opinion’ make guns a scary thing.

You could just as easily misuse a piece of at-home furniture to kill someone, or a number of people. Happens all the time. In fact, happens more often than firearm use in murders.

After guns, it’ll be knives, after knives, it’ll be glass and metal (bottles are not only capable of blunt force trauma, but also of laceration, stabbing and slashing), and after that we’ll probably have to empty out the National Treasury to charter the largest landscaping job in the history of the world and make sure no drop is more than a few feet anywhere in America so nobody can potentially inflict harm at all, ever.

For real people? You live in the wrong country to want to be bundled up and protected by some weird, twisted conglomeration of sociopathic old-school-tie and one-sided nihilism, based entirely on marketing and PR (people in ‘political parties’ are so god damned confused it would be comical if it weren’t important).

All of that is the whole ‘English’ thing we shot a bunch of synchronized-marchers for a little over 200 years ago, and before them the Roman Empire did the same thing.

The truly ‘new’ and ‘innovative’ idea was the one our Founding Fathers eventually got around to figuring out: to each his own. And that meant land, religion, family and RESPONSIBILITY.

  • UpChuck.Liberals

Quick stats for Commiefornia. 2012, over 850,000 guns legally sold. Homicide rate DOWN, accidental shootings DOWN. Homicides by Hispanics are 150% MORE than that of BLACKS. Thankfully, facts have never been a problem to the Democrats /sarc.

  • fsilber

Let me play the devil’s advocate. There is a way that suburban gun owners could be driving up the inner-city violence.

The problem is that middle-class America — white America for the most part, is refusing to provide its fair share of robbery victims. What inner-city youth would have any interest in exposing himself to gang violence if he could more safely get money by robbing white people? It’s the lenient self-defense and gun laws that are deterring all too many from doing this. So what is left for them to do but accept a somewhat lower risk of death competing for a share of the illegal drug market? (Where ordinary private citizens can legally carry guns, robbing them is going to be more dangerous than joining gangs.)

White flight (middle-class flight, actually), is also a cause. If middle-class people had remained in high-crime neighborhoods, their law-abiding nature would have diluted the criminals and thereby reduced those neighborhoods’ intensity of criminal activity. The murder rate would have been more evenly spread out across the countryside, and whites would account for their fair share of murder victims.

In 1965 riots broke out in many major cities. Because of the flight of the middle-class from the cities and their clinging to guns since then, rioters can now do little but burn their own neighborhoods, driving out the merchants they depend upon. You can blame white flight and the NRA for the fact that rioting is no longer a winning tactic for demanding social change.

So to tell liberals they’re barking up the wrong tree when they go after guns is naive. They know exactly what they’re doing.

  • joncody98

I agree with most of the author’s assertions: the majority of the shootings are gang related.
It’s a sad state of affairs we see being played out on the streets of America today.
A LOT of it can attributed to the failed “war on drugs”.
I’m glad to see some of the states starting to reverse the penalties for marijuana possession.
It’s only a start but I hope it catches on in more places.
This is step one on reducing the vicious cycle of catch, incarceration, release, catch, incarceration, release….
Of course while they’re incarcerated, they’re getting their graduate degree in criminality!
One story not getting enough attention is the DEMAND for illicit drugs on OUR side of the border.
Stop blaming the drug lords, not to defend them but they are SUPPLIERS meeting the DEMAND for their product. Just my two cents FWIW.

The murder rate is as a result of history of brutalization of this communities now they are murdering themselve also as a result of unemployment no opportunities people get stressed and end up killin this problems have to be solved coz any way gangs started being formed because of exclusion

Actually a figured it out first its not Obama it took years to get here the reason is because the us is divided there is us and them so they dont see the them as part of america so they deny them everything like an article i read on st louis about raw sewage flowing toxic chemical spills the companies doing this dont want to pay anything no taxes nothing because this is them not us but when people read that the whole usa is shamed this town is in their country

  • Ed Callender

The problem is NOT firearms. The problem is VIOLENT BLACK MALES. 13.8% of the country is black. 51% female, 49% male. 7% of the black males are over the age of 65, 35% are under 18, 40% of the nations prison population are black and did not get there being choir boys. The remainder of the black males make up our morning and evening news and create our fears and biases. Who is afraid, EVERYONE and for a very good reason, common sense. The FBI stats are available for everyone to read but our useless politicians will not discuss them. The problem is VIOLENT BLACK MALES and gangs are the other half of the equation.

    • daniel

you are a racist motherfucker shat the fuck up if u don’t know the answer bitch]

    • Pacc Butler

As I respect your short-cited analysis based on numbers, you are mistakenly uneducated. There is not quite 13.8% of African Americans in the country. Of that total, the vast majority of them are law abiding. The prison population is over 40% African American, not because they are more violent, but because of documented disproportionate application of prison sentences of African Americans vs their white counterparts. The prison to pipeline abuse is not a secret and has been discussed in several FBI and CIA forums. Caucasians make up about half of all murders, and the majority of serial killings, and the majority of mass public shootings. Does that make them more violent or prone to violence….NO! Your mistake is in judging a whole by the sum of it’s parts. There is a lot of variables that go into murder; opportunity, means, lack of education, lack of parenting, socio-economic displacement, etc. I wish I had the time to educate you, but try learning more and stop leaning on numbers….GOOD LUCK

This is my favorite article. A gang attacked my house in Detroit and stripped it. This gang was ran by a lady calling herself Missionary Tracey Blair. The police refused to take a report. When i had to go in to make one they then refused to investigate or give it to the prosecutor. We lost everything including our heating system. I can see for a fact Wayne County and Detroit are protecting these gangs probably Chicago too.

    • HEidi PEterson

You can see it was international news story and they still deny it even happened that is how outrageous these criminally negligent governments go to protect their gangs? And why?

      • Gnowark

At least we can take comfort that police/prosecutors aren’t afraid of the gangs/ loss of gang support in their communities, otherwise there would be something the people of the community would have to do about it whether the police/prosecutors wanted it or not.

  • Factssss

Horrible comparisons. NEVER compare a city to a country related to crime. There are SO many cities in Latin America (San Salvador, Cali, San Pedro Sula, etc) that have homicide rates that no American city is even near too…

  • David Fredrickson Jr.

    Well written article.

  • Inner-city Bob

Most inner-city murders are carried out with letter openers and hand-grenades. We need to have a serious discussion about the mustachioed men of the inner-city who are destroying this country with antique stationary tools.

    This is a pity , disappointed .

  • Patrik Osborn

These statistics are exactly what I’m looking for, thank you. However, I’d like to know your sources, It helps with debates. In addition, how many of these gang related homicides were committed with an “Assault Weapon” or illegal firearms.

    • Spitfire

Patrik, I’ll check the database for the question about “assault weapons” & gangs. But I can tell you now that 87% of gun deaths are from handguns, which are NOT considered “assault weapons”. The DOJ has those stats, (but I’m not sure if that was 2012 or last year’s numbers).

Assault weapons are usually categorized in 1 of 2 ways. They either fire more than one round at a time (like a machine gun, which fires a “burst” of 3 rounds, or more, with each trigger pull being the action required to fire),

AND OR they fire a more powerful or penetrating cartridge. Like “armor piercing” bullets, which are often illegal (maybe every state now).

Just FYI, in Alaska, one would use stronger ammo to take down something like an attacking Grizzly bear. I’m not sure if those rounds qualified as armor piercing, but I know they were legal then.

Though I was raised a city girl, we lived in Alaska for the military. After a black bear assaulted & murdered a toddler in her backyard, in my neighborhood, I took a lot of shooting lessons.

The bear killed the little girl before the mother could respond effectively with a gun she had. (I really felt sick about that). Since we had an infant ourselves at that time, and Alaska was scary new to us, I took the whole “gun readiness / safety” very seriously.

You asked about gang members and their use of assault weapons, which is interesting b/c you’d think that it happens a lot, judging by the media. But that’s the point of this article, in my opinion. Assault weapons are NOT what kills the most people, or is used the most in shootings. Pistols are.

Gang members with prior records of felonies are NOT allowed to purchase or possess ANY weapons. Therefore, ANY gun they’d have is illegal, per se.

Since they are banned from using any guns, yet they commit the most murders I’d ask how many gang members used a weapon, LEGALLY? That number is much smaller.

The media is going for the headlines and its’ own agenda, and NOT going for the cure of what ails us. By far, most gun deaths are related to Gangs. Even with the mass shootings, gangs still account for exponentially more deaths.

The other shootings are for different reasons. But ALL mass killings are either terrorists (political/religious reasons/hate crimes really) or they’re the result of mental illness. In this nation, it’s been the latter (as opposed to bombings & shootings in Mali or London, which is just religious fanaticism and terrorism). We have a problem with mental illness in young adults who don’t want to be treated, but who are a danger to others and themselves.

Off the top of my head, I cannot think of ANY guns that were considered assault weapons, recently used in the mass shootings.

–Cho, the VA Tech shooter, was mentally ill and had been Involuntarily committed a few weeks earlier. He was able to buy the guns online because the laws that existed then, were NOT ENFORCED!…they were there on the books, and Cho should not have been able to buy those guns. But he was able to. So, Instead of saying “More laws” I say “more enforcement” (although there is also a need for more thorough background checks for mentally ill patients).

–Adam Lanza (Sandy Hook) had a long history of mental illness that got his mother to quit her job to focus all her energy on him. He’d never threatened anyone (as of last time I checked) and his mom was very attentive. But she also loved to target shoot…it was HER weapon he stole and her weapon with which he murdered his own mother, and then took the lives of children….but the gun was legally owned by her.
It only fired one round when the trigger was pulled. It’s used for medium sized animals and it was specifically listed as approved by the Connecticut statute —ie, NOT an assault weapon. (I think it was a .223. in Alaska that’s considered adequate for small to medium sized game. Not bears!).

He took it “illegally”, but the media kept harping, irrelevantly, about the “assault weapon” when it was NOT one, nor did HE own it. Stealing someone else’s gun is not a crime you can prevent — by making it harder to legally buy one.

And, since he stole it from his mother, I’m guessing he did NOT care that it was illegal…so unless you ban ALL weapons, AND enforce that, this can happen. Only treating mental illness, and or INFORMING the public about a danger (like registered sex offenders??) might prevent ALL of these crimes from being repeated.

What is frequently confusing to people who are ignorant on this issue (a al Pierce Morgan types, who carp about guns but continue to lack information) is the term “semi-automatic” which THEY think means assault weapon. It does not.

ALL hand guns are in effect, “Semi automatic” b/c each time you pull a trigger, the next round comes up and you can pull again. You don’t have to “pump” it the way you would with a pump action rifle or shotgun.

With rifles, you may have a bolt action rifle, which shoots one round per pull, BUT then, instead of pulling the trigger to shoot again, you have to pull the bolt back, eject the shell casing, chamber the next round and THEN, fire your next shot…which is time consuming and for some people, physically difficult (the bolt actions on large rifles can be hard for small handed people like myself).

Plus, in a panic, a bolt action can be daunting. (See every film made with a woman and a rifle, to get an exaggerated example).

So a semi – automatic means you pull the trigger and it fires a single round. Then you pull again, and it fires another SINGLE round. NOTE: The revolver is a classic example of a semi automatic, in the sense that you pull a trigger for each round. No one calls those an “assault weapon” however.

**in the USA, pistols kill more people than all rifles, combined. There are lots of reasons why…

And, SIDENOTE: If your attacker in on Meth or PCP, you need something with stopping power. That could mean a weapon with armor piercing capacity, which is usually (always?) illegal. OR a lot of accurate shots fired rapidly, like with a semi automatic Glock or a revolver.

Check the Dept of Justice on “Gun violence” for statistics. But know that there are agendas in the numbers.

Sometimes you have to wait a few years, to get the least biased numbers.

    • Glenn Eric Johnson

Rifles are used in less than 1% of murders my source? the FBI, hope i helped you out friend.

Is it just me, or is everyone missing the point? The US Government has been working on taking away your guns because they want to be in control of weapons, and use them against whomever they see fit to. It will start with the government coming in and taking away all the weapons. Then they’ll get rid of the gangs. Then they’ll come after the rest of your liberties and rights, or what little of those you have left. Guten Tag, Bürger. Papiere, bitte.

This article was written by a racist ding-bat who’d like to scapegoat all nonwhite people of the US with all the ills of the world. No mention of the drug war which fattens the pockets of rich white men. No mention of the many, many mass shootings in our schools mainly perpetrated by white people. No mention of the absolutely gigantic privatized prison system that makes huge profits through funneling young people of color into prison cells. Just a long, racist tirade.

The numbers don’t lie. Yes, If you do dig deeper you’ ll see disproportionate numbers when it comes to single parent homes and lack of education in the black community…that are contributing factors to violence and crime… which is also proven by stats. As for the the disproportionate numbers of incarcerated blacks…you forget that the majority have multiple arrests under their belt…also proven by stats…which translates into harsher/longer sentences compared to a person doing the same crime with no priors.

The numbers have meaning…and it doesn’t take much research to see why those numbers are so disproportionate. But any time a person brings them up in an attempt to show what the real issues are…they’re labeled racists…effectively stopping any attempt in having an open honest dialogue on the subject.
