Communism for Kids: Teaching “A People’s History of the United States” to 10 Year Olds

10 year olds. That’s where we’re at now.

Howard Zinn is no longer just for washed up actors like Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. His Neo-Communist propaganda is being wedged deeper and deeper into the educational system, because teaching kids to hate America is the new education.

20 to 30 percent of students in my freshman composition classes say they have read Howard Zinn in high school.  Students now have eNotes to explain Zinn.  There is a teaching edition geared for college teachers, and at least one for high school teachers, especially those teaching Advanced Placement history. They assign his book in suburban Gwinnett County, Georgia, and in rural Hoschton, Georgia.  I have a large file of syllabi for such AP history classes.  Students who complete their college history requirements in high school do not escape Zinn.

Furthermore, an entire spin-off industry has developed for adapting Zinn’s version of history for the lower grades.   Publisher Seven Stories claims that Zinn’s A Young People’s History, for ages 10 and up, is their best-selling backlist title.  A plethora of lesson materials is offered to teachers through the Zinn Education Project.

At a Georgia State University College of Education-sponsored “teach-in” last February, I sat in on a workshop where students from area colleges of education learned strategies from teachers and education professors for using the Zinn version of history to teach elementary school students about Christopher Columbus’s “real” accomplishment–namely genocide.

Zinn’s version of history has been discredited by some historians on the left as well, like Michael Kazin, who said the book was suited to a “conspiracy monger’s Web site.”  The late Eugene Genovese told me he refused to review the book when it first came out during his own Marxist days because it was nothing more than “incoherent left-wing sloganizing.

Zinn contends that the Constitution was devised simply to formalize “the inferior position of blacks, the exclusion of Indians from the new society, the establishment of supremacy for the rich and powerful in the new nation.”

If you want to understand where Obama Elections come from, this is a start. The educational system is headed into dangerously nightmarish territory.

Instead of teaching Zinn's propaganda "book", the education system should teach the real book on American history, the one written by Larry Schweikart and Michael Allen. A Patriot's History of the United States teaches the truth about American history. Zinn's "People's History" teaches nothing but communist propaganda garbage.

The best one I have found is Paul Johnson's 'A History Of The American People'.

      • Bill

I adopted Johnson's book for American history for use at our small Christian college. There are a few places that it needs a bit of suppementation but overall it is an excellent work.

Joe McCarthy was right all along. Why does humanity always insist on crucifying the messengers?

    • Viet Vet

The only thing McCarthy really got wrong was that he greatly underestimated the number of communist spies in our government. The Venona Secrets, by Herbert Romerstein and Eric Breindel should be required reading in this country. This book is a compilation of the files of the Venona Decrypts, the secret surveillance program that the U.S. ran throught the 30's 40's and 50's. It names the communist spies, most of them American citizens, and their communist code names. It also documents much of the damage caused this nation by their actions.

Joe McCarthy was more right than wrong. He just didn't have a large enough cheering and/or demonetization section than the Progressives. Plus, to no ones surprise, the press/MSM wasn't any friend of his.

During the McCarthy era, our government was infiltrated by Communists, and today, those Commies of yesterday, have seamlessly morphed into the Muslim Brotherhood.

        • Viet Vet

They've morphed into the democrap party.

          • JacksonPearson

            For sure… :o)

  • Thomas Wells

Zinn's psychopathic assault on the history of America is his right to be wrong. We have the right to speak the truth-about Zinn, mad Mo, or anyone else, even if it offends them. Lock and load.

  • Mary Sue

we had some leftists up here treating Zinn's works as if they were Gospel As Revealed From On High™ and placing him on equal bearing with Chomsky (and people don't seem to realize that Chomsky's expertise in Linguistics in no way qualify him to make informed or intelligent comment on current and recent-memory US policies).

Calling Zinn a Historian is like calling Al Gore a Climatologist.

    • Bill

I really like your comparison. It speaks volumes. I teach historiography (philosophies, methods, and history of history writing) and Zinn is not the only offender. He is just one of the worst. Practically all the Progressive historians and certainly all of the New Left "historians" purposely distorted history for the purpose of moving a political agenda. Others have done similar. Of particular note in this regard were the Southern revisionists who smeared the Reconstruction governments and glorified the white racist Democrat network of the Old South and the KKK. A good book for those interested in historical philosophies, schools of thought and the history of history writing would be Ernst Breisach's "Historiography: Ancient, Medieval, & Modern."

  • Rifleman

This is what passes for Western Civ these days. Lol, the left condensed it down to one little "people's" (translation: "communists'") history book.

  • tagalog

Any school that wants to add Zinn's version of American history to its curriculum ought to be required to have a prerequisite of American civics before a student can take the Zinn course.

  • JCS

""Hey, hey, ho, ho Western Civ has got to go." Chant led by Jesse Jackson. Zinn's book is a scary start.
Also proof that parents need to become more involved in education. Of course our media would call Zinn, a "moderate centrist." Yeah, so was Stalin.

I tried to read Zinn's book "A People's History of the United States" once. I didn't get too far. I really didn't like it. Also, there's a biography out on Zinn and some of it deals with his book. It was mostly a hagiography of a "sainted" man who tried to get "the other side of American History." He could have done that far more objectively, without attacking America at all.

I've got a documentary meant to lionize the psycho and intelligent people who hear his words understand that he's confessing to being a liar and a bleeding-heart polemist trying to make amends for his "guilt" in carrying out orders as an air force pilot.

The seeds of evil Communism have Progressively pollinated across the United States….:

Even some leftists are smart enough to know not to try to package blatant lies as "a history."

  • JimJimsonJr

I stopped reading this article at "Howard Zinn is no longer just for washed up actors like Ben Affleck and Matt Damon." That's a shockingly inaccurate way to start an article, and lets me know that anything after is going to be filled with the same sort of biased lies. Damon is one of the biggest box office draws in the country, and Affleck is about to win an Oscar for Argo. Do you think you can express your disagreement with zinn's politics without resorting to dishonest rhetoric?

    • Viet Vet

Here goes Jim trying to kill the messenger. The only question Jim, is are you a communist or a useful idiot? If you are a useful idiot, you are obviously a low information type. Of course the hollyweird commies are good at patting their own on the back. If you are just hearing for the first time that the left is communist, that the democrap party is communist, you must be Rip Van Winkle.

  • god

    i like zinn's book

  • HS123

Yes this is true, how socialism is being forced into the educational system, but it is not exactly bad that students including me as a highschool student, are educated on communism and the other side of the argument because how could one argue against it with out being educated on both sides. its just as bad for someone to know nothing of communism and everything about republican democracy; resulting in unformulated arguments.

  • Steve K

    Define : Communism.

TRUE Communism, or the Russian/Chinese/Korean/et al perversion thereof, which are little better than Cult of Personality dictatorships?
