Yes there was an apocalypse in the area last week, but it didn’t seem nearly that apocalyptic. A week ago I would have said that the probability of the Daily News and the even leftier Newsday endorsing Mitt Romney was up there with Jimmy Carter giving the nod to Mitt. But now the impossible has happened.
Every New York City newspaper, besides the New York Times, has endorsed Mitt Romney. That’s a clean sweep of the working class and suburban tabloids, the New York Post, the Daily News and Newsday, and the uptownier New York Observer.
The only city holdout is the stiff New York Times and I can’t imagine what Obama would have to do to lose its endorsement, except wear white after Labor Day.
To understand just how unlikely this is, the Newsday endorsement of Mitt Romney hits Obama for authorizing drone strikes, failing to enact amnesty for illegal aliens and failing to act on Cap and Trade. And then it endorsed Mitt Romney.
In both the Daily News and Newsday nominations, the economy played the leading role. Romney never said, “It’s the economy, stupid”, but the message has come across anyway. Team Big Bird flopped. Team Staples won.
Newsday’s killer line is its opening line. “Had Barack Obama done the job of president with the same passion and vision he displayed in seeking it, he would likely deserve another term. He did not.”
Romney has managed to sell himself even to people who could never conceive of voting for a Republican under normal circumstances. The economic apocalypse is here and even the New York media is waking up to it.
