FrontPage’s Men of the Year: The Three Men Who Gave Their Lives in Benghazi

From left to right: Glen Doherty, Tyrone Woods and Sean Smith

In every war there are those we leave behind; buried in graves in the green fields or falling as ashes scattered on the desert floor. When soldiers die in war, they are honored and remembered, but when they die in a war that is not a war, then there is nothing to remember. All that remains is the cover-up.

There are many inevitable things in this world. The sun must rise, a weight must displace water and Time Magazine must give Obama his second Person of the Year cover. The watchdog poodles of the press can never find enough honors to drape around the neck of their skinny Caesar fresh from his glorious cover-ups on the fields of deceit.

Obama went on the cover and the dead of Benghazi went into the great white grave between the lines of print, the space where all the untold and unread stories go.  It is the job of the propaganda press to bury the dead in those wide white spaces while honoring the men who sent them to their deaths with swaths of spilled ink. And it is our job to open up those white spaces and remember what those in power would rather forget.

Three men died in Benghazi that day. They were not the first or the last casualties in the War on Terror. They were not even the first or last three men left to die by their own government to avoid offending the locals in a war that wasn’t a war. They did not make policy. They were sent to do a job and they tried to do it to the best of their abilities, above and beyond the call of duty, in a place that Obama had gone to war to defend, but that despite American intervention had a hatred of America and a love of Islamism that went deeper than blood.

Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty were former Navy SEALS. Sean Smith was an information management officer. Three men buried in the deep white spaces where government cover-ups fall and disappear into. While Time Magazine celebrates Obama; these three men are Front Page’s Men of the Year.

Charles Woods, Tyrone’s father, said of his son, “He wasn’t even there.  He was at a safe house about a mile away.  He got the distress call.  He heard them crying for help.  That’s why he and Glenn risked their lives to go that extra mile just to take care of the situation. “

The CIA told Woods and Doherty to stand down, but they chose not to listen. Whatever dirty games were being played in D.C., they were there to protect Americans first. The two former SEALS managed to evacuate twenty mission employees while under attack by as many as two-hundred Islamist militia members pounding away with machine guns, mortars and RPGs.

In another time and place, Woods and Doherty would have walked away with Medals of Honor, but instead they were denied air support and left to die. There will be no medals for them. There was, after all, no war, just as there was no war at Fort Hood, just another of those misunderstandings that ends in body bags and a wave of new efforts to resolve our differences with the Muslim world.

“My son was an American hero and he was going, he had the moral strength to do what was right, even if that was going to cost him professionally, cost him his job, even if it would potentially cost him his life,” Charles Woods said of his son. “He was a hero who was willing to do whatever was necessary to respond to their prayers for help.”

Unfortunately the heroism of Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty was not matched by the White House, the State Department or the Pentagon. While Woods and Doherty raced forward to save the Americans trapped in the mission, despite being twice told to stand down, all that the White House had to do was authorize aerial support for the beleaguered compound. Instead the help that Woods and Doherty were expecting never came.

Doherty and Woods were killed by a mortar on the roof of the CIA annex in Benghazi. There were reports that they died while painting the mortar with a targeting laser for a gunship in the area, but instead of air support, there was only death.

The first U.S. military unit arrived in Libya over 15 hours after the attack was over, after an extended comedy of errors, and 19 hours after Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta first ordered preparations for deployment. Despite nearby US air bases, assistance managed to take about as long and convoluted a route to reach Benghazi as was humanly possible.

“I believe that Obama murdered my son,” Patricia Smith, Sean Smith’s mother, has said. “I firmly believe this.” Tyrone Woods’ father has agreed with her saying, “They refused to send in those C130s. To me, I’m an attorney; this may not be the legal test of murder. But to me that is not only cowardice, but those people who made the decision and who knew about the decision and lied about it, are murderers of my son.”

The difference between murderers and politicians is that murderers get put on trial while politicians get Time Magazine covers. At the State Department a few officials have agreed to resign to spare those higher up the inconvenience and discomfort of an investigation. And it’s all meant to balance out. A few die in Benghazi and a few lose their jobs in D.C. And then it’s time for another Time Magazine cover and another outing in Hawaii where the golf courses are smooth and the drinks are even smoother.

“The first casualty when war comes is truth,” Republican Senator Hiram W. Johnson, who had been Theodore Roosevelt’s running mate, had said.

Truth died in Libya even before the war that was never officially named a war began. Its first American casualties fell in Benghazi, but as the shockwaves of the Libyan conflict expand into Mali, Egypt and Syria, it is all too likely that they will not be the last.

"The difference between murderers and politicians is that murderers get put on trial while politicians get Time Magazine covers."

Many people may not agree with me. Well they do not have to, but I believe the 2, Barack Obama and Hilary Clinton are murderers. As I said, people may not agree, but that is where the facts point to. And there was a huge attempt on the part of the Main Stream Media, so they too are murderers, because they helped reelect BO. As for Hilary, she may run for President yet again. America, do not forget their INCOMPETENCE.
    Have a nice day everybody.

    • Cassandra

I totally agree with you on this and add the word cowards and traitors to murderer and your statement is complete.

    • Herbster

Hillary has been nominated by the state run media as the next president – if she runs. The low information voters will put her into office. You think obambi is bad? Just wait.

  • KKKK

i LOVE this! Tyrone Woods was a born-again Christian and i will see him one day in Heaven. i agre with Greefield: if we had a REAL American Prez in the WH, we would be honouring these three brave men for thier ocurage and sense of duty in a crisis. instead, under the TRATIOr obama, they were left to die. such is the way with obaam…he doesnt care about Americans' lives.

    • Joe

Obama cares for his fans. Do you suppose the problem is he did not have any American fans in Benghazi?

  • Adam

And next time Hilary is scheduled to testify she will no longer be secretary of state hence, able to bring an attorney and able to plead the fifth.

  • Rifleman

From what I understand, nobody lost their job over this. They were just reassigned. There's no accountability if the president has a (D) after his name, we learned that with clinton.

    • Asher

They were all bogus resignations trying to fool Americans once again.

  • David

Even though he was a government appointee, the Ambassador, regardless of his dealings, was also killed. He didn't have to be there, either. And he didn't deserve to die suffocating on poisonous fumes from the fire.

    • NAHALKIDES

Agreed. I think Chris Stevens deserves to share the "Men of the Year" honor. He was a brave man whose only real mistake was signing on with the Obama administration, in which everyone but Obama himself is considered expendable.

      • LibertarianToo

I agree as well. I wonder what his final thoughts were, knowing he'd been betrayed by his own president. He may have been a benighted Lefty, but he knew enough to think that the Bengazi consulate should have as much security as, say, our embassy in Paris. God bless all four of them.

  • N.T. Riisgaard

I do believe that Hillary suffered a concussion due to the Benghazi casualties. I do believe that the West needs brave leaders, and I do believe that westeners are facing a deadly crisis. Amidst us roam freely a mighty fifth column lead by mainstream media, manned by progressive, antiwestern leftist traitors. Surely, another dark age is looming. It's about time to call the enemy by its real name. Or, rather names, i.e. Islam and its leftists allied. Sterner times must replace the threats ahead. Confrontation is the inevitable. The traitors among us must be warned and exposed. All this may sound odd in America but the enemy is
staring into your eyes, or rather glowering into. A declaration of war glow. Take the lead Americans, show us. We, the Europeans were confronted long ago. But the tyranny of guilt has weakened our hearts, and the will to survive may be dead. Now the new world must show strength, again, again (WW2, the Cold War).

Progressive (big P), the communist Progressive.

    Amen. They shine in glory.

    • Felice

Ditto. They will be forever remembered, if not here, then in eternity.

    Excellent article.

  • LindaRivera

Wonderful heroes, Glen Doherty, Tyrone Woods and Sean Smith; We are so proud of you! You showed the whole world what it meant to be true Americans! Men of courage and ethics!

How sorry we are that Obama, Clinton and their allies determined that you should be killed by their Muslim terrorist friends.

When you died, three lights went out in this world, but your lights will shine on forever in eternity!

    • Sandy

Thank you Linda, that was a nice comment.

  • Conniption Fitz

They will do the same in Afghanistan or leave a large human sacrifice to the demon gods of Islam when they leave.

This proves that the world doesn't need any more interactions by US. USA has become The World Police Force. Spare all the men and women that does the field fights for the comfortable politicians in the Senate and Kongress, by keeping them at home, back in US._But the War-Industries should probably disagree in what I write, it's they who makes the profit out of all this.

    • Viet Vet

Any real American would disagree with you dimwit.

EXCELLENT! "Obama went on the cover and the dead of Benghazi went into the great white grave between the lines of print, the space where all the untold and unread stories go. It is the job of the propaganda press to bury the dead in those wide white spaces while honoring the men who sent them to their deaths with swaths of spilled ink. And it is our job to open up those white spaces and remember what those in power would rather forget." Mr Greenfield's haunting words have captured the essence of what America's press does nowadays for a livinng. These so-called journalists are evil propagandists, not the protectors of liberty, just wannabe government hacks. Until they are totally exposed to American society for what they really ARE, we are on a course to a vile dictatorship.

  • http://CrossChek.wordpress.com D.D. Edwards

Well stated Mr. Greenfield, well stated

  • Donald DaCosta

On FOX News this AM it was reported that the four State Dept. employees who resigned or were fired are back on the job. And where is Hillary?

    • Viet Vet

The Hildabeast is still in hiding.

  • Barbara

These men saved the lives of 30 people. Why are they not speaking out about what happened? Why are they still at the US hospital in German with no contact with their families or the senate?

  • Johnconrad

    Mr. Greenfield,

Obama is hiding the people these heroes saved.

Find them. If anyone has the passion for this fight, it's those aligned with David Horowitz. He's been telling the truth longer than I can remember.

We must hear the eyewitness stories from that night.

  • Capt_Z1

I truely believe that there are as many Clinton fingerprints on these men left to die as there are on the men left to die in Somolia during the Blackhawk down incident.

  • mlcblog

I am sad to be living in a time and under an administration that will not allow us the means and support to protect ourselves. I know that guns in every school, preferably stealth guns held by unidentified civilian personnel (teachers, principal, guards who are qualified) on a local level and certainly a gun in every holster of our military personnel!!! (who could have imagined that Fort Hood could take place? our soldiers surely must be able to defend their own selves). It is worse than alarming. I hope we snap out of it.

  • JacksonPearson

Hillary Clinton knows how to play the game. Like "Fast and Furious," Benghazigate will be drug out, and eventually fall into the proverbial, congressional-black-hole.

  • gus owens

Bravo, Mr Greenfield! I do think that Ambassador Stevens should have been included too. He gave his life and he was just as much screwed as the other men. I just tried to e-mail Time to tell them that Malala
Yousufzai should have been the selection but I' give it to all of them. I couldn't find Time's e-mail address.
What moral scum-bags Obama and Hillary are compared to those noble souls.
We cannot let them get away with this.

  • Mary Sue

Maybe Hilary is going senile and trying to blame it on a "Concussion". Then again, she has a history:

"I can't remember, my brain's in a blender, it's JELLO!~" – from a parody on Rush Limbaugh about 15 or so years ago

  • Ray Revette

I don't understand why Ambassador Stevens was not included in this presentation. He is an American and he too was left swinging in the wind along with the three mentioned men. This is a very good and well written article and it puzzles me why the Ambassador was not included.

    • Viet Vet

Stevens was the one being rescued, he didn't go a mile through Benghazi to try to rescue any Americans.

      • Gabrielle

Ambassador Stevens is under a cloud of suspicion as far as I am concerned. Was he in Benghazi arranging for an illegal weapons transfer? Until that question is thoroughly investigated and he is declared innocent I don't believe he should be mentioned in an article meant to honor the heroes of that night.

        • W. C. Taqiyya

Sorry guys, Ray makes a good point. Stevens, for all of his flaws, was doing a dangerous job and he knew it was dangerous. If the other guys deserve credit for going into harms way, so does Stevens. They were all brave. On the other hand, they were all working for a State Department run by commies working for a commie muslim president whose every waking moment is occupied with destroying America. Consequently, I'm having trouble summoning much sympathy for mercs working for the bad guys. Sure, they were brave, misguided hired guns, with limited responsibility. But, since I cannot, in good conscience, even justify paying taxes to this treasonous government, I cannot join in this faux patriotic parade. I will keep my flag folded. My message is simple, don't work for the commies.

          • Gabrielle

I disagree. These three heroes served their country, while Stevens served Obama and Obama's agenda to empower his Muslim friends. If I am wrong I will be the first to say so and apologize, but I see a great difference between Steven's actions and those who willingly rushed into danger to answer a call for help from fellow Americans.

          • W. C. Taqiyya

Opinion noted. It's not exactly mathematics, so i don't think your opinion can be proven wrong. Anyway, no need to apologize, even if you change your mind. However, i am confused a bit by how you separate the employment status between Stevens and his bodyguards. I'm pretty sure they were all paid by the U.S. government. In other words, their employer was the same. Unless you meant to say the intentions of the bodyguards were pure and those of Steven's less so? Maybe his intentions and agenda were impure in comparison because he was appointed by a bad man and doing some bad things? I can actually buy that, to a certain extent, I suppose. But, if the road to hell is paved with good intentions, those bodyguards still have something to answer for. Unfortunately, they also worked for bad men and women.

Remember the twenty people that were saved were twenty people abandoned to death at
the hands of the jihadist murderers, if not for the brave men who sacraficed thier lives the
death toll would be twenty plus. When considering what happened and that someone on
top was not doing thier job it can only be criminally neglegent homicide, if not doing your job
resulted in the death of another, you would be jailed post haste. This entire event is much
bigger than the media plays it up to be, twenty left to die but for the brave hearts of a few.

That so-called Media is a big part of the radical-Left problem plaguing America. That Media is so invested in the counter-'racism' that Obama's presidency represents that nothing else matters. Nothing.

  • Ken

Doherty, Smith and Woods were killed by Islamic terrorists, and that is an indisputable fact. Let's remem-
ber that Islamic terrorists are, frirst and foremost, butchers who torture their victims befpre killing them. I
think all or most of these three were tortured, something that is never mentioned in the MSM. Proof
could be provided by autopsies which BHO would never permit if there still are bodies and not just
ashes. If all three were cremated, we can be sure it was to cover up.

  • Maxie

The BeghaziGate fiasco and the sacrifce of our men there went down as it did solely to insure Obama's re-election. The Media went into full complicity to aid this effort just as it has done everything possible to turn a blind eye to Obama' s incompetence, his invisible resume and complete lack of qualification for the job he holds. America goes down the socialistic sewer while the smug, arrogant NYT-led Media practice affirmative action and social engineering while destroying the integrity of the country. Shameful.

Putting Barack Obama on the cover nof Time Magazine isn't too much of a suprise to me . After all in 1939 they put Hitler on their cover and then again i 1959 they had Castro o the cover. So I think OB is in good company

    • Viet Vet

Gorbachev must have made their cover.

  • Asher

They fought valiantly to the very end, especially Tyrone Woods who painted a target on the building he was defending..waiting for help from the US government which never came…Outstanding heroes and soldiers…Sean Smith and Glen Doherty. Stevens was in cohoots with Islam and gun running, thats why he was there on 911. Obama will never ever measure up to American heroes, no matter what he does or who he tries to bluff…he doesn't have the right stuff!

Senator John McCain and Linsey Graham ought to spearhead a formal day of memorial for these brave men. These are TRUE men, not like those who lampoon others for laughs. My heart swells with pride to know there are people like them who serve our country, but I am sick to my stomach of the social darlings our pathetic media foists on we and our children.
The Lord will have the last say about all of this; we can take comfort in that.

Indeed Maxie , that's what this is all about . All your theories as well as Geenfield's are all a load of bunk . Benghazi was a tragedy , brought about by underestimation , both on the part of the CIA and State Dept. – end of story. Hatemongers like yourselves are deluding yourselves with your pipedream .Greenfield is nothing more than a dogwhistle blower asserting his biased opinion , devoid of facts ,as is with most of what he writes . His material is written for suckers like you Maxie , and as you replied to my post :
"Good! the more the better " .
Hatred's a great motivator ,especially amomg the ignorant and uninformed.

"Greenfield is nothing more than a dogwhistle blower asserting his biased opinion , devoid of facts"

This is quite rich – from somebody, who's rebuttal boils down to accusing the author of hate. Talk about Orwellian. And no, it's not the end of story, slick. We refuse to stay as ignorant and uninformed as the drones who support obama.

    Stevens was enthralled with Islamists.

I am truly saddened about the deaths of those lovely guys. America should be so proud to produce people like that. Mr Obama and Ms Clinton should be ashamed of themselves for their behaviour. If there was any justice in the world, these two would be brought before a court to answer for their crimes, along with Tony Blair and his cronies. We in the West are being duped by crooks, thieves and liars, who have no morals and no shame for their actions. I can only conclude that they are instruments of satan and as such deserve nothing more than to be sent to the depths of hell.

Finally, you want social and living proof that the machine actually does what it does. You want to hear good and bad things about it to get a better view on what to buy.
