Gabby Douglas Racism Hoax

Posted By Daniel Greenfield On August 28, 2012 @ 8:40 pm In The Point | No Comments

Victimhood has become a mandatory part of racial identity. In some circles to be properly black requires locating and identifying how you were oppressed. And Gabby Douglas did that on Oprah. Her teammates and trainers are calling her [1] a liar. While we will never know what happened for sure, it’s her word against theirs.

We have, indeed, provided an environment where all our gymnasts can thrive. Gabby’s remarks were hurtful and without merit.
We’ve had more African Americans in elite and on the national team than any other gym in the country (5, 2 of them in Olympic Trials or Olympic Team Camp). Her African American former teammates will answer this serious accusation. (1st statement untruth, she was not the only African American gymnast training in the gym) We are good people.

The power of the victim narrative is such that everyone unwillingly plays a role in it. White people worry that they are being racist and black people worry that they have been discriminated against. The myth becomes stronger than reality.

When identity is defined by a role as oppressor or oppressed, then it becomes hard to tell fact from fiction and truth from hoax. And what does it say about a country whose culture and political establishment trains its best and brightest to think in such ways?
