Now before you jump to conclusions, remember Haitham al-Maleh is one of the “good guys”. He’s not an Al Qaeda Salafist or even a Muslim Brotherhood Salafist. He’s a good old-fashioned Arab Nationalist.
Not only that he served on both the original Syrian National Council and the new National Council for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces created by Obama and Qatar. The new National Council is the officially recognized government of Syria. Most Western countries, not to mention Gulf oil states, have recognized it as the sole representative of the Syrian people.
Haitham al-Maleh is the head the legal committee in the new National Council, which makes him the closest thing to the leading authority on the law in the new Syrian government. And this is his idea of the law.
Haitham al-Maleh, claimed, “Russia, along with Iran, provides Bashar al-Assad’s regime with weapons and ammunition, and supports it politically, therefore the citizens of these countries present legitimate targets for militants in Syria.”
Complicating the matter further, al-Maleh also stated that his interpretation of the Geneva Convention allows citizens who collaborate with an opposing side to be targeted for death.
Before going into the rebel leader business, Haitham al-Maleh was a human rights activist. Here endeth the joke and the only punchline is that the articles urging us to back the “moderate” Syrian rebels will still keep coming no matter what.
