What’s extraordinary here is that this is a bipartisan letter initiated by three senators. Joe Lieberman, Kelly Ayotte and Bob Menendez. One independent, one Republican and one Democrat is as close to bipartisan as it gets. And there really is nothing all that controversial in this letter, which has four points.
The first point states that the closure of the Iranian nuclear issue requires the closure of the Fordow plant and IAEA inspections. The second point calls for tightening sanctions. The third point calls for Obama to with European and Middle Eastern allies in an international coalition to stop Iran if it gets too close to achieving nuclear weapons capability. And the fourth calls for outreach to the Iranian people and support for democracy in Iran.
The letter was signed by 74 Senators. Nevertheless Kerry became one of only 26 Senators not to sign it. Other Senators who refused to sign were Harry Reid, Barbara Boxer, Dick Durbin, Diane Feinstein, Rand Paul, Daniel Akaka, Jeff Bingaman, Bernie Sanders and Sheldon Whitehouse.
