Obama has claimed that nothing changed with the Arab Spring. Apart from Egypt being run by the parent organization of Hamas and lots and lots of leftover weapons from his Libyan War getting shipped to Hamas.
Security sources said a gang had smuggled the consignment – consisting of 108 Grad rocket warheads and 19,646 rounds of ammunition – into the seaport of Marsa Matruh, according to Egyptian daily Al-Masry al-Youm.
The consignment was most likely destined for Gaza but could also have been en route to buyers in Egypt’s increasingly lawless Sinai.
According to a report in The Washington Post last year, large caches of weapons have flooded into Egypt from Libya, including surface-to-air missiles, rockets and anti-aircraft guns. The missiles are smuggled into Sinai and then into Gaza via networks of tunnels.
In addition to Libya, weapons are also being smuggled into Gaza and Sinai from Sudan and from Lebanon, via Iranian proxy Hezbollah.
A top Israeli defense official says Gaza is being flooded with sophisticated weapons from Libya and that the anti-aircraft missile fired last week at an Israeli helicopter likely originated there.
Yossi Kuperwasser, who directs the Ministry of Strategic Affairs, says “significant” numbers of weapons have been smuggled into the territory from Libya since the overthrow last year of dictator Moammar Gadhafi. The country is awash in weapons after the eight-month civil war and has weak central authority.
Palestinian militants in Gaza launched a shoulder-fired Strela missile at an Israeli helicopter last week but missed. It was the first such launch from Gaza.
Mr. Kuperwasser said Wednesday that Israel has long assumed that Gaza militants have kept such weapons, but probably only fired them after they amassed a large enough stockpile.
