"I know people teaching classes of 40+ kids."

Is this the exception or the rule? I think the argument is for totals, not saying there aren't cases to be made where it could be true.

"The solution would be to open up the teaching profession. Get more linguists, mathematicians, scientists, and historians teaching, and fewer "educators"."

It's a real mess, and conservatives generally just want to opt out of failed programs rather than take time to try to fix it. Fixing it might save the rest of the nation from radical liberalism, so there is merit in trying in my opinion.

As a conservative teacher, i agree that we have a dumbed-down curriculum. I teach social studies, and often feel that I'm a professional swindler of the young and their families. Also, I believe that the Gramscian march through the institutions has shown its ugly face in the decline of our schools. However, I dissent about there being enough or too many teachers. I know people teaching classes of 40+ kids.

"No, America does not need more teachers. It needs less teachers and a..." NO. It needs FEWER teachers.
The problem is "teacher training." Those who graduate with a B.A. in "Education" are almost always illiterate and uneducated fools with little or no real education. The problem can be fixed.
1. Dissolve the Federal Department of Education.
2. Eliminate "Professional Teacher Training" programs from colleges and universities. Replace with mandatory 4 year Liberal Arts (Great Books) and Natural Scienceprograms for all prospective Elementary school teachers, emphasizing basic understanding of science, mathematics, and intellectual history. Mandate 2 years of Latin with Greek optional for those with talent. This one simple step will alone will do more for literacy than all the "Head Start" programs put together.
2. Encourage private initiative - allow those with science degrees (Physics, Chemistry, Math, Biology, etc.) to bypass "teacher training" courses by giving them "on-the-job-training" from experienced science teachers at the high school level.
3. Ease all current "Education Professors" into early retirement. Eliminate all such positions once retirement is in effect.

A "teacher of the year" a couple years ago, when interviewed said she wanted to do good, so she was torn between nursing and teaching. She choose teaching because she had off weekends and holidays, didn't have to work nights and had summers off. And then when they strike, for more money and better benefits, they have the nerve to compare themselves with nurses, who might earn more in a year, but have to work the whole year, summers, holidays, weekends, etc......
