Planned: A $10,000 Carbon Tax for Every American

Daniel Greenfield, a Shillman Journalism Fellow at the Freedom Center, is a New York writer focusing on radical Islam. He is completing a book on the international challenges America faces in the 21st century.

Do you want class warfare? Just spell “Class” as “Carbon” and then you’re going to find yourself halfway there.

Let us consider the effects of this policy. A ton of carbon dioxide contains 248 kilograms of carbon, so a tax of $300 per ton of CO2 would be equivalent to taxing carbon at a rate of $1.21 per kg. Since there are about 2.5 kg of carbon in a gallon of gasoline, this would increase the cost of a gallon of gas by $3.02 per gallon, or just a little more than Frank says. The average American driver uses about 730 gallons of gasoline per year, so this tax would represent a cost of about $2,200 per driver. This would be a serious hit for the average American worker, whose before-tax income is about $45,000 per year, and devastating to those making less than this.

…. and remember that it would come on top of Obama’s new mileage standards which will already add 15,000 dollars to the cost of a car. If these people get their way, then by 2025 a car will be a distant luxury that few ordinary Americans can afford. And that’s exactly their goal.

Under America’s current tax system, the top 5 percent of income earners pay 59 percent of all federal income taxes, the next 45 percent pay 39 percent, and the bottom half pays next to nothing. But because basic commodities such as food, electricity, and fuel are bought in similar amounts per capita regardless of income (i.e., a working-class family living on $30,000 per year in Harlem uses about the same amount of electricity and food as the family of a money manager living on $30 million per year on Park Avenue; and rural Americans, of whatever class, spend much more on gasoline than either), the $2.78 trillion green tax would be spread nearly evenly on all Americans, not as a fixed “flat tax” percentage of income, but as a fixed cost regardless of income.

Divided evenly among 300 million Americans, the green tax works out to a burden of $9,270 imposed on every man, woman, and child. While this would be a pittance for the most affluent Americans, it would take away 40 percent of the total income of a family of four supported by two wage earners making the average U.S. salary of $45,000 each, and it would be a virtually fatal burden for the poor.

Again not a problem for the Green crowd which keeps saying that we should be looking to Indian and African slums for guidelines on how to live a less materialistic life.

The left would try to even this out with subsidies that would flow into a planned economy where the price of goods would be controlled by the government based on class. That goes even further than Soviet Communism did, but it’s the only way to avoid the logical effects of a carbon tax, discussed above, that would make life unlivable for tens of millions of Americans.

The left’s preference for trickle down taxation requires an invisible hand. The government promises to crack down on corporations and the rich and the regulatory costs are passed down to everyone.

Was ever a more regressive tax policy proposed? And has anyone ever demanded that the United States launch a trade war to force other countries to impose such oppressive policies on their own people, most of whom can afford them even less?

The idea of this particular tax would go a long way toward Obama's idea of a redistribute of American wealth to the countries of Africa, South America, Asia. The capitlalists would, at last, be paying for the sins of their colonial ancestors. The exploitation would indeed be at an end. It should be pointed out that our poor are wealthy by the standards of measuring poverty in the rest of the world. This would go a long way to leveling the playing field in Obama's mind. As for the idea of a GREEN tax, it is not because Obama believes in the environmental cause. If he did, he would not have given money to Brazil, Colombia and Mexico to drill for oil. This is a tax that CONFISCATES wealth, money that can be used for all of Obama's schemes.

Iyt's inevitable . It's necessarry , and it's gonna hurt . No one's gonna get out of this hole without raising taxes , something neither candidate has the cahones to come out and say . It takes two to Tango and as for the economic recession , it is the direct result of GREED , by politicians who changed the banking laws , Wall Street who realized big profits , Banks who abandoned ther fiduciary responsibilities , and millions of American skimmers and scammers who gave phony financial statements to get mortgages , to brokers who knowingly lied to get those mortgages approved , by dishonest bankers who knew damn well what was going on . So did investors … we all will pay .Forget that bullshiit story about "paying for sins " 'cause that's all it is ./

So you want to give all this money to your Uncle Obama so that you have no choice but to stay home? Then what? Amuse yourself in the bathroom? That kind of activity has a reputation as being unhealthy. Making it fall under the Obama health care bill. Where unhealthy activity will be outlawed.

Your future is so bleak you better take off the shades.

The point is to get this out to the general public and relate it to everyone so they can understand.
why is everyone so timid about the costs for illegal aliens who are breaking the law? Why isn't the Czar issue ever raise? The actual numbers of the increase in government? The amounts of the congressional pensions and those working in the government? what about the thousands in government who are income tax evaders? Why do they still have their jobs and why aren't they being prosecuted? or why isn't Romney stating that?
There is just too much that is going unsaid, and the Republicans had better run ads explicitly explaining about Medicare, restoring the monies stolen by Congress and Obama to pay for Obamacare. Talk about the panels.again and again. The Democrats are already lying fast and furiously. See if Romney , or Ryan, will come to the Freedom center to give a speech,

This Green nonsense will be the death of us all. A modern high tech society cannot survive in an Al Gore world. Besides, what does paying carbon taxes to government have to do with the level of carbon in the atmosphere. (Does anyone still seriously believe that man made carbon is a determining factor in global warming, or cooling, or whatever?) Carbon taxes will not force a modern society to voluntarily adopt an 1880's lifestyle. That genie is well out of the bottle. Carbon taxes can only impoverish the private sector and enrich government to the point where the economy just collapses..
