Controversial broadcaster Alan Jones is under pressure to make a public apology after a court upheld a ruling that he incited hatred and vilified Lebanese Muslims
“If ever there was a clear example that Lebanese males in their vast numbers not only hate our country and our heritage, this was it,” Mr Jones had said. “They simply rape, pillage and plunder a nation that’s taken them in.”
In 2009 the tribunal ruled that the comments were “reckless hyperbole calculated to agitate and excite his audience”.
Clearly it’s reckless hyperbole completely unsupported by the facts. There’s no evidence whatsoever that Lebanese males hate Australia or that they rape, pillage and plunder Australia. No evidence at all.
The rate of serious crime among the Lebanese-born, many brought here as refugees in the 1970s without proper screening, is nearly double that of the rest of us
The assistant commissioner for counter-terrorism, Steve Lancaster, raised particular concerns about members of the Lebanese community, saying they were over-represented in the ‘’distorted Sunni Islamist ideology’’ in Australia. While they comprise 23 per cent of the country’s Muslim population, they make up 60 per cent of those arrested on terrorism charges, he said.
It’s like they hate Australia, its culture and its heritage.
