After all the back and forth, and to no one’s surprise, “SEAL Team Six: The Raid on Osama bin Laden” isn’t just meant to remind voters of the Bin Laden raid, it’s an expensive infomercial for Obama 2012.
Airing two days before the election, Harvey Weinstein took special care to jam “SEAL Team Six: The Raid on Osama bin Laden” as full of Obama clips as possible.
Thanks to the magic of editing, President Obama will have a starring role in a television drama about one of his biggest accomplishments — the killing of Osama bin Laden — that will be shown just two nights before the presidential election.
“SEAL Team Six: The Raid on Osama bin Laden” — is being backed by Harvey Weinstein, a longtime Democratic contributor and one of the Obama campaign’s most vigorous backers. Mr. Weinstein bought the rights to the film for about $2.5 million at the Cannes festival in May.
After buying the rights, Harvey decided that what SEAL Team Six: The Raid on Osama bin Laden really needed is more Obama footage.
Mr. Stockwell, whose directing credits include the horror film “Turistas” and the surf drama “Blue Crush,” said that Mr. Weinstein, after buying the movie, “came into the edit room” and suggested a revision that “gave the movie context and helped root it in reality.”
And by root in reality, we mean add a lot of scenes about Obama.
The film has been recut, using news and documentary footage to strengthen Mr. Obama’s role and provide a window into decision-making in the White House.
Some of the Obama moments were added at the suggestion of Mr. Weinstein, they said, using material gathered by Meghan O’Hara, a producer who worked closely with the documentarian Michael Moore on politically charged projects like “Fahrenheit 9/11” and “Sicko.”
Let’s just pause here. The only things that Meghan O’Hara has worked as a producer have been agitprop documentaries, except for a Pulp Fiction retrospective. If you’re bringing in Meghan O’Hara, then you’re bringing in a woman who has been with Michael Moore since Bowling with Columbine.
Howard T. Owens, the chief executive of the National Geographic Channel, who joined the call, said his company had insisted on removing a scene that showed Mitt Romney appearing to oppose the raid. “We wouldn’t air this if it were propaganda,” he said.
Yup, there was a scene in which Romney opposed the raid. And this isn’t propaganda. It’s a completely apolitical movie about how great Obama is and how Romney singlehandedly tried to shield Osama with his body while bullying the cast of Glee.
The scenes featuring Mr. Obama include an opening with him at the annual White House correspondents’ dinner just a day before the raid (which was added by Ms. O’Hara); another that catches him on a long, lonely walk as he presumably deliberates his weighty decision; and — without getting too deeply into spoilers — another that finds him declaring at the end, “Justice has been done.”
Then there’s one where he mounts Bin Laden’s head on the wall as a trophy and drives away in a Prius while discussing the triumph of the auto bailout.
Just to thicken the propaganda stew, SEAL Team Six: The Raid on Osama bin Laden director John Stockwell put out an editorial claiming that his movie is apolitical and then proving it by trying to smear Romney with a long since discredited line of attack that Obama and his surrogates, like John Stockwell, keep lying about over and over again.
The one thing missing from Stockwell’s article are the people who actually did take down Bin Laden and risked their lives doing it. SEAL Team Six. But this movie really isn’t about them. It’s about the man who sat on his ass while they risked their lives, planning not to kill Bin Laden, but according to a Vanity Fair piece, to capture him and use him as leverage to force civilian trials for terrorists on America.
What a hero.
