The Still Unnamed Enemy

Daniel Greenfield, a Shillman Journalism Fellow at the Freedom Center, is a New York writer focusing on radical Islam. He is completing a book on the international challenges America faces in the 21st century.

As the sun sets over Manhattan, the cladding on the crown of the Chrysler building bursts into a reddish flame that quickly dies out. Lights wink on across the panorama of office buildings and condominiums to the north of the island. In the south there is an island within the island, a space of darkness hardly filled by the naked structure of the new Freedom Tower. Out of that darkness two beams of blue light rise into the sky.

September 11 is a broken moment in American history. Unlike December 7, 1941, there can be no closure for it. It is a loose end dangling in the sky. Time has passed and the tides of the river that flows both ways have washed against the banks of the lower western end of the island built out of earth lifted from the foundations of the World Trade Center. And still the day hangs in the air like moths within the blue light. A question waiting for an answer.

Obama has already delivered his usual speech pimping September 11 as a National Day of Service and turning a solemn memorial into an opportunity for some of his allied non-profits to score free grief labor. The National Day of Service spiel comes packaged with the usual exemption for Islamic culpability from Islamic terror.

“I have always said that America is at war with al Qaeda and its affiliates,” Obama declared, “and we will never be at war with Islam.” But that really isn’t up to him. What the left never seems to understand is that war doesn’t have to be mutual. No matter what you do or what defeatist foreign policy you adopt, the enemy still gets a vote. And the enemies of this country have voted with their bombs and bodies.

The left resisted calling it a “war,” describing the murder of 3,000 people as a criminal matter. Obama even attempted to try Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the mastermind of the attacks, in a civilian court in downtown Manhattan. But then Obama embraced the war and rebranded Rumsfeld’s Special Forces and drones operations as his own innovative technocratic “smart” war.

The smart war doesn’t look too smart in Afghanistan where American forces are dying because they lack air and artillery support. It doesn’t look all that smart when the Afghan soldiers that we are training to replace us are killing Americans at a steadily rising rate. These deaths are at odds with the image of the smart war that Obama has cultivated, where drones operated from thousands of miles away target terrorist leaders and then fly away.

We are at war with the unnamable and when you war with what cannot be named, then you are at war with yourself—your own fears and doubts, your own neighbors and co-workers, and above all else your own country. Every nameless war is a civil war and everyone fights in it without even knowing it. It is a war that can never end because it never began. It officially does not exist and unofficially cannot be won.

The unnamable is what killed 3,000 Americans on a warm September morning and it is still killing Americans in Afghanistan. It is plotting to set off bombs right now, because we cannot name it and even trying to watch out for it without naming it has gotten the NYPD in trouble.

The unnamable, in Rumsfeld’s terms, is not an “unknown unknown”; it is a “known unknown.” We know exactly what we dare not name and that is why we dare not name it for fear that naming it will give it life.

In Afghanistan, Obama squandered the lives of thousands of American soldiers on the long odds of winning the hearts and minds of the natives. Implicit in the crippling of American military might was the understanding that the ranks of our enemies could be refilled from the Muslim population of any given village. This has also been the argument used against profiling in airports, that to designate Muslims as the potential enemy would mean transforming them into the actual enemy, an admission that our politically correct tactics are being carried out on the assumption that any Muslim is just one bad airport experience away from turning terrorist.

“We will never be at war with Islam,” Obama insists, but who is this message really for? If it’s there for Americans, then why did he also feel the need to also say it in Cairo before the murderous rogues of the Muslim Brotherhood? Many Americans are convinced that we are not at war with Islam, but rather few Muslims are. The difference is in our contrasting allegiances.

"Out of that darkness two beams of blue light rise into the sky."

If I want to remember the dead I go to a place to do that. A terror beam people have to see every night is somehow 1984.

    1) Islam always attacks if it can, because it is its eternal agenda, in their books, for millennia.

    2) Becoming a drawback in the 19-20 centuries, Islam could not attack then. However thanks to our mindless oil trade in the 20th century, we empowered our deadliest enemies by transferring them the enormous wealth, by making wrong alliances with them, and GROWING OUR OWN POLITICAL CLASS OF COLLABORATORS WITH THEM (dhimmi class).

    3) It is our own enemy collaborators which introduce and maintain taboo on even mentioning the REAL enemy (as though too big to ever confront it). So the former USSR and Islam were allowed and invited to spread their world influence and to penetrate into our home.

    3) Yes, islam will attack us because now they really CAN – http://www.resonoelusono.com/Imminent.htm

They have no choice, islam means submission.
And the teachings they submit to demand it.

9:29 Fight against such of those who have been given the Scripture as believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, and forbid not that which Allah hath forbidden by His messenger, and follow not the Religion of Truth, until they pay the tribute readily, being brought low.

Anyone that wants to understand why muslim activism always leads to violence needs to read surah 9. It has mandates that every militant and every muslim terrorist is using.

  • MikeWood

Blimey Daniel, this is epic! You have nailed it again and again and again. You have delved into the true heart of the matter; I especially like this insight, "Each side projects its assumptions on the other and then reacts to what it would do in the other’s place." These unexamined assumptions are killing us.

    • Alvaro

Yes, assumptions are the mothers of all mistakes.

      • tagalog

I bet you $10 that assumptions are NOT the mothers of all mistakes.

"I have always said that America is at war with al Qaeda and its affiliates,” Obama declared.

I bet he hasn't ALWAYS said that. I bet he's only said that since the fall of 2001, assuming he said it that early.

It's more likely that however long he's been saying it, it's been no sooner than since we invaded Iraq.

I wonder if he was one of those tattered souls who said that we shouldn't go to war with the Taliban in Afghanistan (who were the people who harbored bin Laden and encouraged him to do the 9/11 terrorist acts, not al Qaeda) in the fall of 2001 because Ramadan was coming and it would be an act of disrespect to go to war then.

There is blood on Obama's hands.

      • tagalog

My position has been, ever since the days of my youth in the Vietnam era, that once you say you're pulling out, you have to get the troops out of there right away, no fooling around. No residuary force or occupation troops. Bring in the transports and get 'em out en masse. If you're not going to fight, get the fighters out right bloody now! If we're going to be diplomatic, send the diplomats.

Yes, indeed there is blood on Obama's hands.

        • trickyblain

Yet not nearly the amount as his predecessor, who has the blood of 5,000 Americans on his hands and that of countless tens-of-thousands of Iraqis. And for what? Why should American troops still be dying over there?

          • Jim

I suppose you would also use that logic to say that Churchill, Franklin D. Roosevelt and all the other leaders of the free world at that time were guilty of the millions of deaths that ocurred during the second World War? Methinks that Freedom is NOT FREE and to keep it you must be prepared to defend it at all costs….
Employing pansy politics and appeasement tactics to a barbaric and backward enemy is a waste of time and serves to cause many more casualties than prevent them…As far as Islam is concerned, the whole of the freedom loving world should kick these Left-wing Liberals into touch and then get together and go after Islam and its murderers with a vengeance…War should be total or it should be left alone.

          • tagalog

President Bush's decision to send troops overseas to Afghanistan and Iraq had two virtues that declaring an end to hostilities without a victory doesn't: (1) President Bush and his staff came up with a credible response to the attack by Muslims on our airplanes, cities, and military facilities, and (2) they intended to put those troops where they were to WIN the battle.

Bush's biggest mistake was not in failing to win those battles; indeed he won the battles. The insurgencies proved to be the difficulty. Back in the time, the U.N. and "pacifists" all over the world were clamoring for the United Nations to be in charge. President Bush should have turned Iraq and Afghanistan over to the U.N. as soon as our troops successfully toppled the Taliban and Saddam Hussein. He didn't and that was too bad.

The ultimate irony would be for a Muslim to get Obama and since he took credit for killing Osama Bin Laden there must be a dozen fatwas out on him. His efforts on their behalf won't help him. He helped Mursi get in, he helped the radicals take over most of North Africa but they look at him as a useful idiot but in the interim, he is destroying America.

    • trickyblain

I'm missing how that would be irony…

      • Jim

Tricky…….Having a president who pretends to be your friend while doing everything he can to help the enemy?? If he was got at by a muslim it would be like you getting a guard dog to protect your property then that same dog turning round and attacking YOU….It's called "irony"…..Doh….

Very wise blanket statement. You sound like James Carville when he declared that "the American people are TIRED of the attacks on Pres. Bill Clinton". The truth was, only he was tired of the attacks.

Islam is neither your enemy nor mine. But you have declared yourself to be an enemy of Islam. Now how do you intend to defeat it???

      • aspacia

Many Muslims do use Islam to attack and murder unarmed civilians. Since 9/11 there has been 19,000 Muslim terror attacks committed in the name of Allah.

Join Jasser's group and decry Islamism if you want to gain some credibility.

      • JoJoJams

If you converted (reverted – lmao!) – you are a fool – plain and simple. Since the "extremists", encompassing millions, and sponsored by nations, use your "holy book" and the examples and edicts of your prophet to do the terrorism they do, you really are the fool to think that islam is just another "peaceful" religion. And you know nothing of history either. If you converted, leave. If you were born a muslim – I feel very sorry for your brainwashing. Islam is a death cult – and it proves it by its actions around the world. yes, there are millions of decent humans who call themselves muslims and are still decent humans DESPITE the edicts and tenets of islam, and despite the example of your "perfect man", but that doesn't mean islam is anything other than an evil cult. Of course, if you leave it, you will be an apostate and should be killed, per mad mo's own words! And how do you feel about slavery and sex slaves? All part of islam and the example of your perverse "prophet". Please seriously think about it – and leave that gutter religion.

      • Drakken

How you defeat islam is very simple, complete and total war with no quarter. Islam has been an enemy of the west for 1400 years, it is finally coming to a head, it will be us against you.

On a previous anniversary of 9/11 I wrote an article about how that days events might have been reported by the BBC, CNN or the Guardian if they used the same approach as they used to reporting terrorist attacks against Israel. Considering how the main stream media in the USA has presented stories about Islamic terrorism against the USA since 9/11 by trying to cover up the Islamic angle, I think it is now the case that this is not much different to how the 9/11 story would actually be presented by the main stream media in the USA today:

  • Schlomotion

9/11 may be a intellectual caesura for Jewish nationalists and a big gaping hole in history that will never be closed until it is filled with Muslim skulls like the Khmer Rouge, but the rest of us normal people have moved on. We passed the 9 year mark. Now we passed the 11 year mark. I am still looking forward to the 49th sabbatical year jubilee commemorative and the Franklin Mint dishware with the planes crashing into a crying Eagle and American flag, but until that fine crockery comes out, Mr. Greenfield's elaborate portrait of Israeli drones crashing into unseen enemies will have to suffice.

    • Kufar Dawg

        • Drakken

Just curious, does people who openly side with jew hating muslims tire you out? Does it ever get boring not seeing what is happening and just opologize and grovel at the feet of savages in the hope they will spare you?

          • trickyblain

I'm not siding with Jew hating muslims and never have. I've always defended Israel's right to exist and right to defend herself. I've always recognized the wonder and splendor the Jews have offered the world. What I don't do is incessantly and impotently threaten people online. Just asking why you do that — over and over and over…?

    • Pontotoc Bill

Again, you attempt to smear Jews. You are a pathetic excuse for an American, if you are.

Islam is responsible for more deaths and massacres than any other religion or movement.

    • poppakap

Once again the anti-semitic troll-in-chief opens his ugly piehole. There is no end, rational or otherwise, to his ugliness when it concerns Jews or Israel. Tattooed the swastika to your forehead yet slow one?

The rest of us normal people still remember 9/11 because innocent American citizens of all religions, races, and sex were murdered in cold blood by your dhimmi-loving friends from the religion of peace. That we insist on continuing policies to avoid this event from reoccurring in any context is worthy of the exercise until long after you are worm food.

      • Schlomotion

I bet you spend a lot more time thinking about Islam than I do.

    • Ghostwriter

Unbelievable,Schlomotion! Your repeated idiocy proves that you're a heartless monster as well as a complete idiot.

    • advocatus

You're a smug, pathetic nonentity, Flippo, but your ignorant posturing of intellectual vigor and superiority continues to grate on my fine sensibilities so I can't help but address your rant yet again. Ah the horror! Ah the pain!

      So here goes:
      1) Learn your history, as I've pointed out to you on numerous occasions. To wit: there are no mounds of Khmer Rouge skulls in Cambodia, as you would have it. It was the communist Khmer Rouge that did all the killing. So the skulls on display at a memorial in Phnom Penh belong to those of their erstwhile victims.

      2) Learn English. Stop trotting out 5-cent words at random after looking them up in a thesaurus. To wit: define "intellectual caesura." More prosaically, also define "Jewish nationalists" in the context you're using the term.

      Carry on.

      • Schlomotion

Per usual you are splitting a hair based on something I didn't say. I know the Khmer Rouge did all the killing. Secondly, buy a dictionary if you are lexically challenged.

Incidentally (that means "by the way"), the money is not in the five cent word but rather in the quantity of words used. I think you meant 25 cent words.

        • advocatus

If you meant the Khmer Rouge, you should brush up on your syntax and grammar, Flippo. Maybe English is not your first language, though, in which case my apologies.

Don't try to dodge the point I raised by hissing like a peevish schoolgirl. Try to do better if you can. Again: define "intellectual caesura" in the context of your rant. And no, "caesura" is hardly a 25-cent word; it hardly qualifies as a 5-cent one, but I wanted to sound generous with you.

    • Omar

Enough with your anti-Semitism, Schomotion. Atrocities committed by "Jewish nationalists" have always been condemned by the Israeli population and the worldwide Jewish community. Meanwhile, Islamists terrorists get cheered on by Hamas, Hezbollah and the Islamist regimes in the Middle East. That's the difference. While Israel condemns atrocities by whoever committed the crime, its enemies glorify the perpetrators if the perpetrator is an Islamist.

    • Beretta

Shlomotion is a Muslim. The linguistic analysis of his sad, pathetic essays leaves no doubt that this is a small man with an equally small mind who found a cover behind a distinctly Jewish name to conceal his real identity. All the bs about being a home-grown US libertarian is just that – bs. Unreal.

  • Questions

The Muslims stick their asses in the air five times a day to an invisible man in the sky called Allah, who in turn will give them the strength to kill as many people as possible whose only "crime" is not sticking their asses in the air giving praise to Allah. This religion gives me the creeps.

  • flowerknife_us

The next one will be by professionals. Trained by Nation States for the job but kept under wraps. Their track record over time has been to escalate the impact. Most "Terror attacks" are small, localized events compared to 9/11.

The next one will be a bit more technical and problematic. Multiple in scope to insure success. With all participants willing to martyr themselves.

The first World Trade Center bombing shut down NYC for a day.

9/11 shut down America for several days.

Who is to say they would not go for long term shutdowns of North America/Europe/Japan.

Question to Mr. Greenfield (I already know the answer from most of the keyboard warriors that post here). I doubt I'll get a reply.

FPM authors are, in general, very slippery when it comes to the question of "all" Muslims. and even as you slam the administration for not naming the enemy, you don't specifically do so, either. You lead and suggest and you whisper. But you don't come out and say it

So, in one word, who is the enemy, Mr. Greenfield?

    • Drakken

Here, I'll help you. Islam is the enemy period, end of discussion. If you cannot see it, your deaf and blind to reality.

      • trickyblain

Yeah, that's kinda obvious from my question, genius. Why do you think Greenfield and FPM won't come out and say it?

        • Drakken

Well sunshine that is easy to answer, never give the left ammo for them to use against us, but with current events spiraling out of control there will be war soon and it will spill over to our western countries. In order for America, Britain, Israel and the rest of the free world to emerge victorious in the global conflict against the unholy alliance of the far-left and the Islamists, they must identify properly who are our friends and who are our enemies, both at home and abroad. I will identify who are our friends and who are our enemies domestically in the United States, the United Kingdom and Israel (for each country, since these three countries have the best democratic systems in the world), while I will identify the three countries' friends and enemies internationally. In the United States, our friends (organizations) are AIPAC, Stand With Us, the Tea Party, the GOP, YAF, the Heritage Foundation, the Media Research Center (which operates NewsBusters), Citizens United, Fox News and other patriotic organizations. Our other friends (individuals) are Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum, Herman Cain, Richard Pipes, Humberto Fontova, Allen West, Marco Rubio, Susana Martinez, Larry Schweikart, Michael Allen, Ann Coulter, Michael Medved, Dennis Prager and other patriotic politicians and pundits. Our enemies (organizations) are MSNBC, Media Matters, Communist Party USA, ACORN (or whatever remains of it, since it is technically defunct), the National Action Network, the Nation of Islam, the Black Panther Party (both original and New), Pastors for Peace, the Workers World Party/International Action Center, the Revolutionary Communist Party, the Democratic Socialists of America, the former Weather Underground Center for Constitutional Rights, Occupy Wall Street, October 2011 (O-2011) organization, Adbusters, CAIR, the Muslim Students Association, the Islamic Society of North America, the (now defunct) Holy Land Foundation and other radical leftist and Islamist organizations in this country. Our other enemies (individuals) are Bill Ayers, Al Sharpton, Jeremiah Wright, Ed Schultz, Rachel Maddow, Lawrence O'Donnell, Tom Hayden, Ramsey Clark, Leslie Cagan, Medea Benjamin, David Brock, H.Rap Brown, Bob Beckel, Bonnie Raitt, Brian Becker, Luis Gutierrez, Leonard Weinglass, Kalle Lasn and other radicals. In the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico (yes, Puerto Rico is a domestic topic since the island is a U.S. territory), our friends are pro-statehood organizations like the New Progressive Party, the Island's Republican Party, the Puerto Rico Statehood Students Association, the U.S. Council for Puerto Rico Statehood and any other pro-statehood organization. Our other friends (individuals) are Luis Fortuno, Thomas Rivera Schatz, Jennifer Gonzalez, Jorge Santini and other pro-statehood politicians on the island. Our enemies in the island are all the separatist groups (since all of them are Marxist and hate the United States) and all the separatist politicians like Juan Dalmou. In addition, the Popular Democratic Party (which favors the current "Commonwealth" status) and its politicians like Alejandro Garcia Padilla can also be regarded as enemies as well, though the PDP isn't anti-American and pro-totalitarian the way the separatists are. In the United Kingdom, our friends are pro-Unionist individuals (like David Cameron) and organizations (like the Conservatives) as well as the British Royal Family. Our enemies are separatist organizations (like the Scottish National Party), leftist individuals like George Galloway and Neil Clark and organizations like the British Communist Party and the Scottish Socialist Party (which is also a separatist organization) and influential Islamist organizations. In Israel, our friends are Caroline Glick and other pro-government individuals as well as organizations like Stand With Us Israel. Our enemies are those individuals and organizations who falsely blame Israel for atrocities that its enemies have committed. The U.S., the UK, Israel and the free world allies are friends in the struggle for freedom, democracy, peace and stability in the world. Despotic regimes like China, Cuba, Syria, Venezuela, Zimbabwe, Sudan, North Korea, Iran and other repressive regimes are our enemies and they must be confronted and defeated in the free world's struggle against tyranny and terror. Hopefully, the free world be victorious in the struggle.

Islam is an aggressive totalitarian ideology disguised as a religion. Refusal to identify Islam as an enemy of of the United States is as unbelievable as it is suicidal. Today's news from Egypt and Libya highlights the love Islam has for us and proves the Arab Spring idiocy is turning the Islamic Mid-East into a base for the Muslim Brotherhood. I'm sure the Obama Administration will take all this hate and violence in stride by shoveling more billions into the cauldron to help it succeed.

Exactly. It's a form of anarchy where almost anyone can incite believers to attack. We are being blackmailed in the end out of the fear of incitement. That empowers the anarchist attackers and fomenters.

In a different cultural framework, this is the mindset of both the Hells Angels and the Italian Mob. In the Mob, if you kill a 'made man', they will kill you in return regardless of what your motive was. In the Angels, all Angels are expected to take the side of any Angel.

      Dear 'US Muslim',

The problem is that when it comes to the important things, all Muslims DO think alike.

All Muslims profess the shahada, consider the Koran the direct, immutable, unalterable word of Allah, and uphold Muhammed as an excellent model of conduct and al-insan al-kamil, the perfect man. This is true of the friendly Muslim down the street, a murderous traitor like Maj. Nidal Hassan MD, or the terrorist jihadist Osama bin Laden.

So essentially, all Muslims believe the same thing, and when the terrorist Muslim pressures the friendly Muslim down the street to submit to Islam, we get the same result – beheadings, bombings, airliner attacks, murder and terror.

You see, there is no reliable way to discern a peaceful Muslim from a jihadist, because they believe the same things. And, the 'peaceful' Muslim, just by being a Muslim, aids, abets and facilitates the expansion of Islamic ideology, which leads inevitably to death, oppression and subjugation.

"to the shores of tripoli"——i wonder where they got that phrase. is it possible that americans of an earlier age recognized that we were at war with islam? only in our soft age when "going to war" means winning the hearts and minds of our most determined enemies, blaming ourselves for everything the enemy does, and turning treason into a national pastime is it possible to think, against all the evidence, that we are not at war with islam.we did not chose to be at war with islam, but we are.

  • curmudgeon

there are two ways to end the war with islam. one–destroy islam. eradicate it from the earth. ridicule the criminal prophet, his crime manual, and his evil invention, allah. the other way to be at peace is to accept islam. embrace it. become as evil as the prophet. rape, murder, rob, enslave, and torture, but always venerate the prophet (pbuh), and worship the god of pure evil. dont ask when we are going to choose which way to end the war with islam. we have already decided. we have already chosen option number 2–submission. our grandchildren will despise us for our cowardice, but what's a little cowardice when we can have peace in our time?

The author tells us that Muslims will attack us again to "show us that they still can." Well, they're certainly taking their time about it. Meanwhile, the actual terrorist threat is so miniscule that the FBI has to manufacture terrorist plots just to keep itself busy. Every few months I hear of another motley crew of schizophrenics and intellectually challenged individuals that the FBI has persuaded to attempt a terrorist attack, just so it can say that it prevented one.

    • curmudgeon

the threat from islam is not terrorism. we will defeat the terrorists. the threat is muslim immigration and breeding, and they are winning that battle on all fronts, with unlimited aid and comfort from treasonous western governments. it would not help civilization at all if we could eliminate all the violent jihadis, if their nonviolent brothers in arms breed themselves into a majority, declare sharia, and genocide everyone who doesnt conform to their evil religion.

  • Mr. Polly

    That's government logic.

Bill Clinton & Barack Obama defined: what IS is & what ISLAM is !
