Then Start Your Own Damn Twinkie Company

Daniel Greenfield, a Shillman Journalism Fellow at the Freedom Center, is a New York writer focusing on radical Islam. He is completing a book on the international challenges America faces in the 21st century.

AFL-CIO union boss Richard Trumka is blaming Wall Street for the collapse of Hostess Brands, makers of Twinkies, among other things.

“What’s happening with Hostess Brands is a microcosm of what’s wrong with America, as Bain-style Wall Street vultures make themselves rich by making America poor,” Trumka said in a public statement. “Crony capitalism and consistently poor management drove Hostess into the ground, but its workers are paying the price.”

So here’s a modest proposal. If Wall Street sucks at running a Twinkie company, then start your own damn Twinkie company.

Hostess’ assets will be on the chopping block soon enough and the AFL-CIO can afford to buy. The AFL-CIO election war chest runs anywhere from 300 to 900 million just for its political activities. That’s more than enough for Trumka and his thugs to buy up Hostess, a company with negative revenue, and show us how it’s done.

Sure Trumka’s thugs are better at assault and battery than at running things, but how hard can it really be? Wall Street can’t do it, so it’s time for unions to show us how well they can run things… besides the government.

And I bet Trumka will eat all the profits, in more ways than one.

This is a shame, every child and Adult really loved the Hostess products…Everything thats good in America is disappearing because Greed destroys everything!

      Whose greed?

blame it on then ignorant, stupid and badly educated public who believe that crap from Trumka and Obama. If they don't like it, they should do it and put their money where their mouth is. But the reason they don't want to do it is that for them to run a company that makes a profit, they need to deal with their own rank and file and then the s— will hit the fan, because their rank and file will revolt against them. I hate to see Hostess go, but Mexico is not too far and labor unions don't exist over there, people are nicer, hard-working and respectful of what the company owners have to put in to invest in the company, not only in monet but in effort, worry, blood, sweat and tears. And shipping the stuff from Mexico is a breeze by truck. I hopw they do it and screw the stupid union's employees who actually voted to terminate their jobs. What a bunch of dodos. On the other hand, there is always welfare, food stamps, subsidized housing, free healthcare, What a country this one has become.

Stop the blathering, Greenfield, and highlight the facts. The union wasn't fighting for a pay raise. They were simply trying to stop draconian pay cuts. Workers were losing benefits, asked to accept 27% pay cuts, and the 8 hr day was eliminated. After 2004, the company closed multiple plants and GUARANTEED that the savings would serve to rebuild the company. Instead, in 2011, executives voted to increase their own pay by 80%, and the CEO even higher. Stick to the facts, Greenfield.

Fella, there are other things at play, yes. We may never know everything. Especially with today's mainstream media, and public indifference. However, what this piece is mainly saying is, if unions think it is so easy to run a company, why don't they prove it? Liberals think money grows on trees. Apparently, they think Twinkies do too. And too bad there are no pictures of Obama having a Twinkie like him smoking. Wait, maybe there are.

Anyway, since all liberals hate Twinkies by definition, you should celebrate their demise, while calling Twinkie eaters fat, poor, racist, white trash losers, who work for minimum wage, because illegals refuse to, and are better off without those jobs anyway, and should sign up for those racist food stamps, so Obama can not tell them not to buy beer, or hotdogs, or lottery tickets, or pizza slices and diet pop, while never pointing out union boss Richard Trumka is even fatter than they are, or Obama's "health czar", Regina "give me a Twinkie" Benjamin.

What do you expect when other high costs cut into a company's ability to pay its workers? Should it borrow money?

  • vegasdave

its the shareholders money, douchebag. they can do with it whatever they want.

If hostess were allowed to hire workers without govt. interference, the application line would be out the door for $10/hr jobs. why should hostess be forced to pay workers $20+/hr. plus benefits. Do union members have to pay $7.00 per gallon for gas? Then why should hostess pay more than the free market requires?

One of the TV stations in Canada that used to be linked to CTV was having problems and was going to close down. The employees of the station got together and bought the station. Now it still runs, and it is very successful.

There was a mill in Canada that was going under. The management was having too much trouble and was going to shut it down. The employees (ALL unionized) got together and bought it. That mill is still running.

I propose that the Union member employees buy out Hostess, or at the very least buy the bakeries they were working at. That'll actually save jobs. Then they can run it however they wish.

Try a deep fried Twinkie with butter and sugar on top, add lots of maple syrup and candy corn….This is an item on the Idiot Diet.

"Crony capitalism and poor management drove Hostess into the ground." That's what the unions said about the American steel industry. Why did the U.S. steel industry lose its share of the world steel market? The answer, in two words: Labor unions.

    • Mary Sue

The unions seem to think that there are buckets of money somewhere that the companies are keeping secret/hidden/hoarding that they could be getting.
