US to Spend $16,000 on New Hands for Abu Hook

It’s just another day in the life of a terrorist in the civilian justice system that Obama is so enamored of. Want to keep a terrorist from bringing in weapons, in the form of his metal claws? Then you’ll have to spend 16 grand to buy him a new set of hands [2].

Al-Masri’s metal hooks were removed from his forearm stumps Friday night after he was handed over by the Brits to face terror-related charges in Manhattan federal court.

The move capped an eight-year extradition battle during which al-Masri whined repeatedly about the “oppressive” conditions he expected to face behind bars in America.

But because depriving al-Masri of a “reasonable standard” of medical care in jail would violate his civil rights — and provide grounds for an appeal — he’s expected to be outfitted with a pair of no-frills, cable-operated rubber hands.

“Passive,” non-electronic prosthetics retail for between $5,000 and $8,000 each, while higher-tech models that feature electronics and sensors can cost up to $50,000 each, depending on how many fingers are functional.

But the federal Bureau of Prisons’ official policy states that while inmates “deserve medically necessary health care,” all of their services “will be obtained at the lowest possible cost.”

If we’re going low cost, let’s put out a bid for the lowest possible price out of Shanghai. I’m sure the ingenious folks there will come up with some great replacement hands for Abu Hook for under 10 bucks. And if that fails, we can always see about getting him a seeing eye pig.

Pot-bellied pigs [3] are increasingly being used as service animals and show great promise in helping the handicapped as well as the emotionally disturbed.

But the real story is that civilian trials provide endless room for this kind of nonsense. During WW2, Nazi saboteurs were not given expensive hands, they were given a brief trial and a firing squad. But what was good enough for FDR isn’t good enough for Obama.
