We Can’t Stop Iran by Stopping Iran

Where Iran is concerned, anyone involved with the Obama Administration seems to take logic, sanity and reason and throw them down the deepest darkest hole they can possibly find.

Neither the United States nor Israel is capable of wiping out Iran’s nuclear capability, former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates said, and “such an attack would make a nuclear-armed Iran inevitable. They would just bury the program deeper and make it more covert.”

Stopping Iran’s nuclear program will make its nuclear capability inevitable. As opposed to not stopping it, which will make the nuclear program even more inevitable.

Gates would have some credibility if he said that Israel couldn’t stop Iran’s nuclear capability, but is he seriously claiming that the United States couldn’t do it?

To follow the logic trail here, force can’t stop Iran’s nuclear program, but the same sanctions which failed to dissuade Saddam Hussein and Kim Jong Il over more than a decade will get the job done.

Destroying Iran’s nuclear program will just make Iran conceal it better, which means we should give up trying to stop it or they’ll find some way to hide it from us when they rebuild it.

There’s absolutely no logical thread to any of this. It’s the old arguments being unable to fight terror being mapped over Iran’s nuclear program which is an organic and unstoppable entity except through limited sanctions.

Gates went on to predict that ”the results of an American or Israeli military strike on Iran could, in my view, prove catastrophic, haunting us for generations in that part of the world.”

Like undermining the Shah and supporting the Ayatollah did? Or the Arab Spring? Funny how appeasement never haunts us for generations, but military action is always haunting us.

Iran could be stopped tomorrow,;not by a sanction, but by a button.

      Agree!

I assume you suggest nuking Iran. This would more or less result in the end of the world as all nations would oppose us and we can't be stopped. If Iran nuked Israel it would result in The end of Iran.

Either way, nuclear weapons are used as a deterrent. No nation is going to use them in this day and age and a nuclear Iran is inevitable. How many other nations built nukes under our nose? Pakistan, India, north Korea, Israel, china, south Africa and Russia. We're wasting our time.

I have to ask, if military violence won't work, what will? Does Gates want us to pay off Iran? Say good things about them? The English tried to bribe Hitler with 5 billion dollars to prevent WWII (and this was when 5 billion dollars was a lot of money). The English then tried kind words and Hitler, like the current Iranian leadership, laughed at England's PM for making a funny.

Gates can pontificate all he wants, let us see come concrete solutions as well?

"I have to ask, if military violence won't work, what will?"

Articles of liberal faith: Violence never works, and all you need is love. Ask John Lennon.

"Gates can pontificate all he wants, let us see come concrete solutions as well?"

Gates should be the chess equivalent of a rook, but he's just another pawn.

      " if military violence won't work "

containment deterrence between two nukes power ! a major and a small.

Gates is right military option will not work, and he is not alone to said that !

all highest ranking from US army and pentagon agree with gates !

military option can delay it, but will make it far more difficult to stop it after !

get it guys iran is very likely to get nuclear capability ! no matter what US and do let alone israel

The truth is that the U.S. could turn Iran into the proverbial glass-floored parking lot, let alone stop it from building nukes. So how exactly would we be "haunted" afterward? Muslims wouldn't like us anymore, boo-hoo!

If Iran doesn't give up after having their facilities destroyed, we should attack their infrastructure as well. If you can't generate electricity, you can hardly build a nuke. If that still didn't knock their nuclear program, then we should use our own nukes. Better we do so than wait for the savages to do it.

We have a hollow and tired military. Defense cuts in the midst of multiple wars, weary soldiers, and a nuclear arsenal reduced to a size comparable to that of Pakistan or India.

    • objectivefactsmatter

"Muslims wouldn't like us anymore, boo-hoo!"

Bingo. Remember, they're just victims. You need counseling from CAIR if you fail to shed a tear over the thought of causing any harm to an Islamic nation.

"Better we do so than wait for the savages to do it."

People who learned the wrong lessons from the US Soviet cold war think that nukes are no big deal.

    • natherex

if we hit them with nukes we would be the savages. Military intervention is one thing nuking a civilization is another. It would have terrible consequences on america's security. You have to remember we ae not the only ones with nukes.

    • http://twitter.com/undefined @undefined

Our constant wars is what extremists want. It's a rope a dope strategy. We will eventually bankrupt our nation by nation building and exorbitant spending. Use of nukes is not an option and we have a no strike first policy. Anyone who thinks we should use nukes on any nation first has zero knowledge or foresight to be able to even comprehend such actions and results.

It was heaven on Earth for the over 100 thousand Iranian Jews who prospered within the Islam culture for centuries. But they were unjustly accused of being Zionists and forced to leave their Synagogues, homes, and Iran. The Golden Era of Iranian Jewry is gone and all that is left is a pleasant memory.

  • truebearing

It seems to me that at some point, military action would leave no Iranians left to continue their quest for genocide. and world war. Maybe annihilation is the only answer…. or is it possible that just helping Iran's democracy movement with money, weapons, intelligence, etc is the answer?

Doing nothing is obviously NOT the answer, but that seems to be Obama's specialty…. Do nothing and enable evil to grow.

  • Gamaliel

Attacking Iran once to destroy their nuclear bomb factories would only work temporarily so keep bombing them Mr. Gates or even better support Iranian revolutionaries so they'll overthrow the government, oops it's too late for that.

  • flowerknife_us

If attacked, count on Iran going all in, What happens next depends on who Iran goes all in against, Will Iran make common cause with Arab Muslims or

  • flowerknife_us

Cause a bigger rift by attacking Our Interests in Arab Country's? Would Turkey cause NATO to splinter? Will our Forces in Afcrapistan be trapped? Will our own reaction depend upon who our President is?

Gates is gone so it is what Leon thinks now. Will Heaven help us?
