Would You Vacation in Sunny Benghazi?

Benghazi has some nice beachfront property, but it’s also overrun by Islamist militias who want to implement Sharia law and stone a whole lot of people to death. Their welcome committees, affiliated with Al Qaeda and the Muslim Brotherhood, pack RPGs and mounted machine guns.
But minor problems like that aren’t holding back the Maltese Corinthia Group from its plans to build a five-star Corinthia Hotel with 338 rooms, including a number of executive bedrooms, suites and a presidential suite, for when the newest dictator comes calling, along with “a coffee shop, an executive lounge, a business centre, a spa, a gymnasium, a swimming pool and underground parking for over 200 cars” which will be perfect for car bombers.
The Corinthia Group, 30 percent of which is owned by the American Wyndham Hotels Group, already has a hotel in Tripoli, Libya’s capital, and another in Khartoum, where you can watch Sudanese genocide taking place from your window.
IHI is headed by a Pisani, but its board of directors includes a large number of Muslims which may explain its growing focus on building hotels in trouble spots. Notably present is Nagmeddin Hemali Mokhtar, who serves as a non-executive director and a Managing Director of the Libyan Foreign Investment Company which was/is Libya’s sovereign wealth fund.
Until the Benghazi Corinthia Hotel takes off, local travelers will have to make do with the Uzu Hotel, rated by travelers as, “UZU is closed for maintinace” and “Could do with a facelift.” As well as, “Due to instability in the country at the time, the lobby was swarming with men clad in army fatigues” and “the smell is unbelievable – if your balcony faces the lake then just leave!”
Alternatively there’s the Tibesti, which reviews describe as “A Great 70’s Socialist Vibe” and the Al-Wahat Hotel which is rated as, “Oh Dear!” and “Le nostre stalle sono più pulite”, which appears to translate as “Our stables are clean.”
Discerning travelers are advised to avoid Benghazi as there is a high risk of being murdered either by Islamist terrorists, bandits or heavy odors– to be followed shortly by the obligatory cover-up.
