When the “worst of creatures” do something that the “best nation ever brought forth to men” finds offensive, the “worst of creatures” have no rights that the members of the “best nation ever brought forth to men” are bound to respect. This holds true even of the dead, who died in unbelief and are thus being tortured in hell by Allah: “We shall certainly roast them at a Fire; as often as their skins are wholly burned, We shall give them in exchange other skins, that they may taste the chastisement. Surely God is All-mighty, All-wise” (4:56).
Ultimately the “worst of creatures” must submit to the rule and hegemony of the “best nation.” The twentieth-century Muslim Brotherhood theorist Sayyid Qutb declared: “If we look at the sources and foundations of modern ways of living, it becomes clear that the whole world is steeped in Jahiliyyah, and all the marvelous material comforts and high-level inventions do not diminish this ignorance. This Jahiliyyah is based on rebellion against God’s sovereignty on earth. It transfers to man one of the greatest attributes of God, namely sovereignty, and makes some men lords over others.” The way to restore Allah’s sovereignty over the earth is to impose Islamic law (Sharia), which mandates a subjugated second-class status for non-Muslims.
It was in this context that the graves were desecrated. Islam mandates a sharp dichotomy between believers and unbelievers, who in the Islamic vision of society can only live in harmony with one another when non-Muslims know their place and submit to the Muslims. The desecration of the graves in Libya was a direct consequence of non-Muslims not knowing that place, and not submitting.
As such, non-Muslim analysts would do well not to see these desecrations as isolated incidents. But given that willful blindness about the ways in which jihadists use the texts and teachings of Islam to justify violence and supremacism is now official dogma in Washington, never to be questioned, it is much more likely that these incidents will be brushed aside or ignored altogether in the continued quixotic and ever-fruitless effort by the leaders of the “worst of creatures” to win hearts and minds among those of the “best of nations.”
