Chicago Police Head Raises Money for CAIR

The Islamist pressure campaign against major law enforcement agencies is bearing fruit. They have put the NYPD on the defensive, thanks to some help from deceitful articles in the New York Times. And now, Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy has even agreed to speak at a fundraiser for the Council on American-Islamic Relations, a group that the FBI has officially cut ties with over its links to Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood.
The Investigative Project on Terrorism broke the story that McCarthy met with officials from the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), where he promised that the Chicago Police Department would not use the surveillance tactics that CAIR has lashed out at the NYPD for using. Outrageously, McCarthy even agreed to speak at a fundraiser for CAIR’s branch in Chicago. The event will honor Kifah Mustapha, an imam whose bid to become the Illinois State Police’s first Muslim chaplain was torpedoed when his links to Hamas came to light.
CAIR was labeled by the federal government as an “unindicted co-conspirator” in the trial of the Holy Land Foundation, a charity found to be a Hamas front used for fundraising. In 2007, the said that , “From its founding by Muslim Brotherhood leaders, CAIR conspired with other affiliates of the Muslim Brotherhood to support terrorists” and “the conspirators agreed to use deception to conceal from the American public their connections to terrorists.”
In 2009, the FBI stopped working with CAIR on outreach to the Muslim community. CAIR lost its fight to have its designation as an “unindicted co-conspirator” lifted and on July 1, 2009, District Court Judge Jorge Solis ruled that there was “ample evidence” tying CAIR to Hamas to justify the label.
This did not stop all law enforcement agencies from working with CAIR. In October 2010, the FBI field office in New Haven, Connecticut used the Muslim Coalition of Connecticut, led by a former CAIR spokesman, to train its personnel in “Islamophobia.” CAIR helped organize the event.
Yet, CAIR still is able to influence the media, politicians and agencies involved in counter-terrorism.
In 2007, the Los Angeles Police Department caved to CAIR’s pressure over its plans to use mapping to analyze the threat posed by different areas of the Muslim community. A spokeswoman said, “There was a clear message from the Muslim community that they were not comfortable with it. So we listened.” Today, Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca is among the most prominent defenders of CAIR and speaks at its fundraisers.
The pressure campaign against law enforcement, especially the NYPD, went into high gear in early 2011 after reports were published allegedly exposing the influence of “Islamophobes” on counter-terrorism training. By October, the FBI Director was ordering a cleansing of all “offensive content” from training materials with the help of unnamed outside organizations. The same orders were given at the Pentagon and the Department of Homeland Security.
It soon became apparent that the outsiders helping the U.S. government edit its materials included the Muslim Public Affairs Council , a group founded by Brotherhood ideologues and a close ally of CAIR. In October, the Department of Homeland Security and the National Counterterrorism Center distributed a document to all law enforcement agencies about how to craft its training programs. MPAC and Sheriff Baca were cited in the report. Words like “jihad” and “Islam” did not appear in the text.
In January, CAIR called for the resignation of NYPD Police Commissioner for his department’s showing of a documentary titled “The Third Jihad” to about 1,500 police officers and for appearing in it. The film exposes the Islamist threat within the U.S. and exposes CAIR. The New York Times piled on, publishing articles that falsely quoted from the film and told its readers that it is a “hate-filled film.” The film is narrated by Dr. Zuhdi Jasser, a devout Muslim and has been endorsed by the American Islamic Leadership Council. The film’s producers released a rebuttal video. The NYPD decided to stop using the film.
On February 8, the FBI Director held a meeting with groups that included MPAC and the Islamic Society of North America, the latter of which was (like CAIR) designated as an “unindicted co-conspirator” in the Holy Land trial and tied to Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood by the federal government. The FBI said it was considering having these groups review the agency’s counter-terrorism training materials.
The Investigative Project on Terrorism reports that over 1,000 presentations on radical Islam were removed from training materials with the assistance of groups like these. The IPT states:
“The February 8 FBI meeting was the culmination of a series of unpublicized directives issued in the last three months by top FBI officials to all its field offices to immediately recall and withdraw any presentation or curricula on Islam throughout the entire FBI.
In fact, according to informed sources and undisclosed documents, the FBI directive was instigated by radical Muslim groups in the US who had repeatedly met with top officials of the Obama Administration to complain, among other things, that the mere usage of the term of ‘radical Islam’ in FBI curricula was ‘offensive’ and ‘racist.’”
The good news is that CAIR’s offensive against the NYPD spurred anti-Islamist Muslims into action. On Monday, a coalition of about 25 Muslim-American leaders and organizations held a rally to support the NYPD. They condemned CAIR, the Muslim Brotherhood and Islamism in general. This was the most direct challenge to the leadership of CAIR, MPAC and similar groups from within the Muslim community to date and it received significant media coverage.
Speakers at the rally also supported the NYPD’s investigations of the Muslim Students Association, a Muslim Brotherhood front. The NYPD is under fierce fire for its surveillance of some of its members and chapters.
“To CAIR, I say: We are Muslims, too. Who gave you the right to speak on our behalf? The Muslim Students Association keeps turning out terrorists like Aafia Siddiqui and Anwar al-Awlaki. They should be investigated,” said Tarek Fatah of the Muslim-Canadian Congress.
Dr. Zuhdi Jasser, president of the American Islamic Forum for Democracy, said, “If you look at arrests for terrorism, over the last 200 arrests, over 80% have been of Muslims and yet we are only one and a half percent of the population.” He ridiculed those who charge “Islamophobia” whenever the problem is confronted aggressively and appropriately.
The controversy over the NYPD has given an opportunity for law enforcement agencies to see the Islamist and the anti-Islamist leadership in the Muslim community. Unfortunately, there are still officials like LAPD Sheriff Lee Baca and Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy who choose to embrace, and even help finance, the wrong side.
