The New Leviathan: How the Left-Wing Money Machine Shapes American Politics and Threatens America’s Future

Pages: 1 2

This advantage means liberal groups far outspend conservative ones. On immigration, the 117 progressive groups identified by Mr. Horowitz and Mr. Laksin have 22 times the funding of the nine conservative groups. On environmental issues, the count is 553 liberal groups against 32 conservative ones, and the left has 462 times the funding of the right. A broad range of liberal groups thrive not because they have significant popular support, but because their big-donor funding stream is so massive and reliable.

This isn’t just a story of numbers. Mr. Horowitz and Mr. Laksin point out that much of this money is the diverted product of the free-market system progressives are trying to undermine. The left has employed a corps of philanthropic professionals to change the orientation of foundations established by capitalists. Oil tycoon J. Howard Pew, for instance, left a fortune to teach Americans the “values of the free market” and the “paralyzing effects of government controls.” Pew Charitable Trusts is now the largest funder of the Tides Center, a middleman funder of far-left-wing activists.

John D. MacArthur was a conservative who put other conservative Midwestern bankers in charge of his foundation. Now that those conservatives are gone, the foundation’s leadership and grants have become dominated by progressives. The same fate befell the Ford and Rockefeller fortunes and those of many other capitalists, who would be spinning in their graves if they knew what causes their money was now underwriting.

Left-wing activism’s advantage is even greater because all the money isn’t just going directly to causes. Instead, liberal activists use government as a force multiplier. They spend money to influence government not only to carry out policies they prefer, but to fund further liberal activism. Progressive politics has become a self-perpetuating machine funded to a great extent by American taxpayers.

It would be nice if there were an easy solution to this funding disparity, but the book’s primary goal is to expose a reality that runs counter to conventional wisdom. We are told constantly that money in politics is put there by businesses with conservative aims. The numbers tell a different story. There is a lot of money in politics, but, as Mr. Horowitz and Mr. Laksin write, “progressives are the power,” accountable to no one and deploying vast resources to significantly frame and influence the national debate.

Maybe just by exposing this, Mr. Horowitz and Mr. Laksin have taken the first step in making them accountable.

From now I'll anxiously be waiting for the second and third step. Are you optimist? Thank you for this interesting article.

  • Stephan

The leftist money machine runs with fiat money. Stop the helicopters which let rain fiat money and there will be justice.

Otherwise the future will be some kind of democracy where A (maybe Africa) will rule the world for four years, after that B (maybe Norway) will rule the world for four years, after that C (maybe Feminists) will rule the world for four years, after that D (maybe pedophiles) will rule the word for four years, and so on and on and on.

    • Not You

I'm afraid you missed the point. The Pew, MacArthur, Ford and Rockefeller foundations are REAL money. Real BIG money.

  • Ken

Which rich people are the big, bad meanies again?? Which people are the ones using big money to subvert the political process. Progressives!! Don't be fooled by their facade!! Uber-Leftists and their Progressive hacks DO NOT have this countries best interests in mind!!

      John Kerry Heinz.

  • DeShawn

Yeah, we’re not falling for it, this article is a’s the damn zionist jews controlling both parties. You people don’t care about this country, just lining your pockets with money so that you can continue to keep us goys in the dark. I urge anyone that reading this to go to to learn the truth about the jew parasites.the jew cries out in pain as he strikes you.

Wow!!! Anti-Semites are everywhere!! What a blatant racist remark!! I wonder if you have the intestinal fortitude to spout your sewage in public??

      • BS77

DeShawn has been posting his drivel from the rubber room in his mental ward for awhile now….no need to respond to him. Same rant every time. Tedious bore.

So what ELSE is new Youssef ? Egypts been persecuting copts for decades , someone's just taking notice now ?

Try 1400 years. It's about time someone started to notice.

      • Drakken

Yet you always side with the islamists and their leftist allies? Very interesting.

LOL……aside from the expected anti-semitic rants from DeShawn , the article is correct . Big Money is doinng the funding AND the legislating in this country . What the author SO CONVENIENTLY leaves out is , that big "Leviathon " on the right . LOL….good choice of words Ron Johnson [great for effect ] And look where Johnson hails from ? Wisconsin , where a classic battle of " Big Monies " [leviathons ] just took place . Where didvthat funding of the right come from ? Mostly out of state , Here we go again , more "look who's calling the kettle black " again . And all that mony will go far , on BOTH sides , because at the end of the day , the choice we will all have in November , is to choose between TWO LIARS . The best money can buy .

    • Judas

"What the author SO CONVENIENTLY leaves out is , that big "Leviathon " on the right . LOL….good choice of words Ron Johnson [great for effect ] "

Anyone who only read the tittle of the article would come to that conclusion. Page 1 shows a desparity between left and right with hard numbers. "Leviathon" comes from the book Sen Johnson was reviewing in this op-ed, not his own creation. Then again if you were interested in other opinions you would have known that by simply reading the article you so confidently Trolled.

    • truebearing

The only thing that exceeds your undeserved ego is your poor reading comprehension. Your writing skills leave a lot to be desired too, but lets work on your deeper issues first. Try rereading Senator Johnson's post….15 or 20 times and see if you can spot the flaws in your latest rant. It's better if you can find them without any help.

      • Amused

Read the above reply to Judas , and ditto goes to you too . Two typical airheads .

The Best defense against the Left-Wing Socialist Machine is factual information…Give people the truth, they will evntually see the light as their lives become less than desireable and Freedom flees their lives!

    • Amused

That's right Asher , the TRUTH indeed ! Not anyones "version " , nor anyones opinion , something both the right and the left should abide by .

  • flyingtiger

Since foundations turn left, maybe we should just eliminate foundations. Any opinions on this?

    • Questions

It will never fly — legally, morally or economically. Plus, there really are foundations that lean Right. Put your money where your mouth is: Support them.

    • Ecco La

No need to abolish foundations. Private foundations are the product of regulation. Just change the regulations to only permit them to exist for, say, 10 years after the death of their founder, upon which point they'd have, say, 5 years to spend down. This would make it much less likely they could get hijacked by the Left.

  • Questions

The libertarian journalist Martin Morse Wooster wrote a book back in the Nineties on how current foundation leadership often subverts donor intent. The Pew, Ford and other Left-leaning nonprofit philanthropies operate virtually 180 degrees contrary to the expressed wishes of their original benefactors. There are legal as well as moral issues here.

  • Johncdavidson

It is sad that these foundations set up to help Americans have been taken over by the Global socialists just like Andy Stern took control of one of the largest public unions unnoticed by main stream media; the supposed lookouts that the constitution had given them the expressed powers to do.

We are at the 'Y' in the road at this very moment, The only direction to go to save our freedoms is to make the right turn. No longer a question of politics: It is about an individual's freedoms or submission.

Organic, non-GMO avocado, fruit and nut trees and berries must be planted in all of our nation’s cities’ and towns’ parks to help the many millions of Americans who will soon be in a desperate struggle to survive because of the frightening, highly destructive economic policies of our government.

Perhaps a good start…. But let's not be too hasty in discrediting GMO's, that is unless you have discovered how to eradicate laurel wilt and citrus greening; both of which are at the moment incurable diseases that are poised to decimate Florida' avocado and citrus industries. Rumor is that a Plant scientist in Texas has inserted a gene from spinach into citrus that apparently provides resistance to citrus greening..hmmm.. food for thought.

    Is this REALLY our AMERICA??????

Know the TRUTH about the Government Health Care Bill H.R.3200 – Key Points

  • Linda Rivera

An inferior, IMMORAL health care plan that NO ONE wants and CANNOT afford to pay. The threat to jail and/or fine those who don't purchase the government enforced plan.

Massive spending as if there is no tomorrow. Fighting wars we have no money for. Massive borrowing.

The Massive giving away of Billions of dollars every year to other countries, including the OIL-WEALTHY Middle East, Hamas-controlled Gaza and the Palestinian Authority organization who fill their war chests, build mansions and LAUGH all the way to the bank with FREE infidel money. Whilst in America, homeless shelters are filled to capacity; tent cities have sprung up all over the U.S. filled with desperate, jobless, homeless Americans.

Massive debt. The massive printing of paper money out of thin air to DELIBERATELY create out-of-control inflation. There is no question that the total DESTRUCTION of America's economy is planned. The results will be horrifying. In the once wealthy and great nation of America, millions of Americans will become destitute, hungry and homeless with no money or resources to help them.

    • scum

When the health care plan is shot down, health care expenses are expected to rise beyond the catastrophic current levels, with 40 million going without. It's going to get worse.

Obama's "backers" brushed aside the Clinton machine like a mosquito. Pesky informed voters could throw a monkey wrench into Obama's workings, maybe, if it's not already too late. I'd guess that Obama will not leave office peacefully if there is any a close or controversial election.

nearly all federal, state, and local city employees belong to the SEIC There are as Full-Time Federal Employees – 2,518,101, as Part-Time or Seasonal – 250,785 Full-Time State – 3,818,577 Part-Time – 1,451,002 Full-Time Local Unionized – 11,039,250 Part-Time – 3,383,976 That is about 21 milion people paying at least $5 a month or $100 million dollars a month which is $1.2 billion dollars a year to support the Democrats and keep them in office for the overpaid and over benefitted public unionized employees.

"It would be nice if there were an easy solution to this funding disparity,"

I'm sorry, but did I read that this article was written by a Senator? Perhaps an easy solution, Sen Johnson, would be to grow a pair and author a bill to stop OUR MONEY from being spent on these causes. Just say'in.

  • scum

uh… LEFT WING? And I just read that Glenn Beck signed a 5 year, $100 million deal. Imagine if we gave that money to our schools instead of a loony. World Updown Side.

    • truebearing

We already spend more per student than any country on earth. Money isn't the answer, obviously. Look at you. You can't think and call yourself "scum," not that I am disagreeing with you on that particular point. what does that say about our education system? We don't need money,we need morals. i'm guessing you're bankrupt in that category too.

Beck is putting his money to good use. He's spending everyday of his life warning people about this leftist leviathan.

Apparently Ron Johnson hasn't heard of Citizens United. Time for an education, bro!!

Apparently you don't understand Citizens United. Time for de-programming, comrade.

Horowitz and Laksin may reference it in their book, but there is a worthwhile book called “The Great Philanthropists and the Problem of Donor Intent” by Martin Morse Wooster; the title is self-explanatory.

Horowitz wrote an excellent article a few years ago in which he started on this topic, the article was “Intellectual Class War”. I have been quoting it frequently ever since. It is good that he has written a whole book on this subject now.

Ron Johnson, another one of Wisconsin's embarrassment of riches when it comes to political leadership. It is significant that people like Senator Johnson, Scott Walker, and Paul Ryan all come from the crucible of Progressive politics in Wisconsin. They have grown up watching what the Left has done in Wisconsin and it has given them clarity and resolve. It is no surprise that a successful businessman, senator, and patriot like Ron Johnson would champion David Horowitz's exposure of the Left's insidious infiltration into America's wealth. I hope it helps get every American to read it. We are outgunned.

    ….and nobody's heard of ALEC , right ? Riiiiiiight . Hypocrites All !

  • Jim_C

Ho hum…yet another “Start with a foregone conclusion and parse the facts until they fit our picture” political hack job. I am amazed people are paid to even write this stuff, when the end result is not truth-seeking but bias-confirming.

Seriously–how easy do you think it would be to write a book with the exact opposite viewpoint? (I’m sure it’s been done).

Is it really a revelation that big money and big donors hold the reins of our democracy? Are we supposed to be shocked that democrats have major capital behind them, too? Is that really supposed to be “contradictory?” Would this information be likely to change a Democrat’s mind? Would similar info on the Republicans be likely to change a conservative’s mind?

It says a lot about our electorate that we’d rather hear this sort of pseudo-political claptrap than address the influence of money on the political process in a comprehensive, mature way. First question to ask: Is it even “bad”? Certainly, it’s the way politics have worked since the dawn of politics.

What a bunch of right-wing, facist drivel. These racist, sexist, Bible-thumping, paranoid, plutocratic right-wingers make me sick…their ideas and actions are what's tearing this country apart.
