The High Cost of Defending Israel

Whenever I speak in support of Israel or in criticism of its enemies, the dogs of defamation are unleashed against me.  The attacks, all from the hard left, seemed coordinated, focusing on common ad hominem themes.  They accuse me of being a plagiarist, a supporter of torture, a right wing Zio-fascist, a hypocrite, an opponent of the two-state solution and a supporter of Israel’s settlement policies.  All these allegations are demonstrably false but this does not seem to matter to those whose job it is to try to discredit me.

Let me begin with the charge of plagiarism—a charge originally made by the discredited academic, Norman Finkelstein, who has falsely charged virtually every pro-Israel writer with the same academic crime.  In my case, the charge centered around a one-paragraph quotation from Mark Twain in my book The Case for Israel.  I cited the paragraph to Mark Twain, but Finkelstein said that I should have cited it to a woman named Joan Peters, because he believes I found the quote in her book.  But the truth is that I found the quote ten years prior to the publication of Peters’ book and used it repeatedly in debates and speeches.  When Finkelstein leveled his absurd charge, I immediately reported it to the Harvard University President and to the Dean of the Law School and ask that it be thoroughly investigated.  Harvard appointed its former president, Derek Bok, to investigate the charge.  After a thorough investigation he found it to be utterly frivolous.  But to the dogs of defamation this only goes to prove that Harvard must be part of the pro-Israel conspiracy.

The second charge is that I am pro-torture, despite my repeated categorical statements in my writings that I’m opposed to all torture under all circumstances.  I do believe that torture will be used, not should be used in the event we ever experience a ticking bomb situation. Accordingly, I have suggested that no torture should ever be permitted without a court approved warrant, of the type the ACLU has demanded in targeted killing cases.  But to the dogs of defamation, this distinction is irrelevant. Because I am pro-Israel, I must be pro-torture. This is particularly ironic, since both the Palestinian Authority and Hamas routinely torture dissidents, without their leaders being called pro-torture by the same hard left defamers who falsely accuse me.

The most recent unleashing of the dogs of defamation was stimulated by the position I took on a BDS conference at Brooklyn College.  Although I support the conference going forward, and oppose any attempt to censor it, I raise troubling questions about whether the Brooklyn College political science department should be sponsoring and endorsing that advocacy event, if they would not be willing to sponsor and endorse an anti-BDS event by an equally radical anti-Palestinian right wing group.  My position, of course, has been distorted, and I have been lumped with those who would censor the event.  I have been called a hypocrite because apparently the political science department at UPENN once co-sponsored an anti-BDS speech I gave there, despite the fact that I was totally unaware of this sponsorship and would have been opposed if I knew about it.  I was informed and believed until now that the event had been sponsored by Hillel and the Jewish Federation.  Along the same lines, two members of the political science department at Brooklyn College have claimed that my speeches there were sponsored by the department and were as controversial as the BDS advocacy event.  That is totally false.  So far as I can remember I have made three speeches at Brooklyn College:  One, the Konefsky lecture in the late 1960s or early 1970s which was a purely academic lecture focusing on the work of Professor Samuel Konefsky.  There was nothing controversial about it.  Second, a speech I was invited to give when I donated my papers to Brooklyn College.  Again not very controversial.  And third, a talk I gave in 2008 about my teachers at Brooklyn College and about a letter by Thomas Jefferson I had found in a book store.  This can be heard online at  Again, not particularly controversial.

Why then is there such a concerted effort to attack me personally and to question my integrity every time I speak about Israel?  It has little to do with me, because my attackers know that I can fight back and that my academic standing will not in any way be influenced by their attacks.  The attacks are directed at young academics, without tenure who would dare to speak up on behalf of Israel.  The message is clear:  If you support Israel, we will attack you like we attack Dershowitz, but you will be hurt much more than Dershowitz would.  We will damage your reputation, hurt your student evaluations and decrease your chances for tenure.  It should come as no surprise, therefore, that so many pro-Israel young academics refuse to speak up.  I know because they call and discreetly tell me about the fear they have that they will be subjected to the same kind of McCarthyite tactics that I am subjected to.

That is why I will continue to fight back and respond every time the dogs of defamation are unleashed against me.

People who call Alan Dershowitz a right winger clearly have no idea what they're talking about. It's then that you can tell that those are knee-jerk, Israel-hating (probably Jew hating too) radical Leftists who are so far to the left, they make Bill Clinton look like Glenn Beck.

    • EarlyBird

Mary Sue, granted the binary "left – right" continuum is pretty simplistic, but where would YOU put yourself on this spectrum. You don't think you're a "right winger" or "on the right"? I figured you'd be proud of that.

      • Mary Sue

This isn't about me, birdy, but since you asked, yes, yes I am.

    • RUI

Israel hating is ALWAYS Jew hating. It's just a flaccid way of saying the mantra "I don't hate Jews, BUT…"

  • AdinaK

There is definitely a high cost to defending Israel, but only because the PC police have decided that the Arab/Muslim narrative must be satiated at all costs. But it is not as if western academia is blameless. Far from it. In fact, if not for their deligitimization of Israel, the outcome would be much different –….

Not convinced? Fine. But the facts are on this blogger's side –

But it is not as if being a Zionist academic, in Israel, is a cake walk. The prices paid are very high, at least for those who deign to protect the Jewish home land. Dr. Martin Sherman is one such stalwart prof, even as he waded through their lion's den, while teaching at TAU. Here is a sampling to back it up –

Therefore, as chagrined as Alan Dershowitz feels, it requires placing one foot in front of the other. Dr. Martin Sherman is doing just that –

Kadima – and I don't mean the party!

    Adina Kutnicki, Israel –

I f'ully support Israel and always will, in spite of being persecuted. It is never wrong to want freedom and try to do whats best for the people. Israel has been persecuted for thousands of years, but the time is coming when Hashem, will redeem his people, and those who are loyal to the One True God. All cultic religions will finally set up and take notice, and God's wrath will destroy the enemies of Israel.

This freak calls a noted scholar Flinekestien discredited ….

Dershowitz calls occupied Arab historicPAlestine – ''the jewish homeland !!!"

He is a Islam basher and hater much the same as robert spencer:

Quran 5:82: "Strongest among men in enmity to the Believers wilt thou find the Jews and Pagans; and nearest among them in love to the Believers wilt thou find those who say: "We are Christians:" because amongst these are men devoted to learning and men who have renounced the world, and they are not arrogant. "

    • SHmuelHaLevi

      Just for fun…
Listen, you seem to eager to do something "final" against Jews and Israel and we are ready to deal with that. How do you intend to do it? Are you sure you are up to it? Remember what happened in fact every time the islamic tried.
I'll suggest you get down from the stupid soap box and go kill each other in Syria or somewhere else. That is the only thing you all know how to do.
I bet you'll run from either defending your country or in front of our military if your vermin attack us. I did see the valiant moslem troops take their boots off and run like shark sh… on the wet deck. That was in Mittla Pass and in Lebanon as well.

asim, I CURSE your false "prophet" of satan mohammed.

Your "noted scholar" was refused tenure by St. Paul University. Pretty much sounds discredited to me. But then the rest of your post isn't much of a credit to the "Religion of Peace", so I guess it's all the same. My only question is why you're stooping low enough to communicate with dhimmis. Better get back up on your camel.

"Qur’an has a total of 114 chapters called ”Sura’s” of varying lengths, and a total of 6,666 verses, called “Aya’s”…the total number of chapters or Suras in which direct and explicit references are made towards the Jews include over 50 out of the 114 Suras in total, which constitutes almost 44% of the chapters of the Qur’an. The following is a list of those 50 plus Qur’anic chapters, or Suras, where there are direct references to the Jews and Christians: Sura’s 1-12,14,16-34, 39, 40, 42-46, 56-64, 73, 98, 109, 113 and 114…"

      • reader

In total, some 4,000, or roughly 60% of the 6,666 Aya’s contain either direct or indirect issue of the Jews. Of the direct Aya’s, only 3% (around 200 Aya’s) of this total are somewhat neutral references many of which are later abrogated, leaving 7.5% (or around 500 Aya’s) as attributing some of the ugliest descriptions possible, singling out the Jews as the worst segments of humanity….were we to consider the above exegetically, taking onboard the implicit references as well as the explicit, it would constitute almost two thirds of the entire Qur’an – that is well over 4,000 versus, or 60-64%, which directly refer to the Jews and Christians in one way or another, and by a combination of induction and deduction, declare them to be in divinely mandated eternal enmity with the Muslims.” (Eternal Islamic Enmity & the Jews, Al-Maqdisi & Solomon)
So, yes, the Jews are enemies number one, and the Christian are enemies number two. I'm sure this is very comforting for the Christians.

Norman Finkelstein, along with your false prophet Muhammad, are considered to be anti-Christs. In the end, there's only one place for them and whoever follows Muhammad to dwell, and that's in hell! Why? Because Biblical scriptures say so.

Israel is more than just a Jewish homeland, it's also the holy land of Jesus Christ, and Christendom. "Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me."

    • PAthena

Asim says that Israel is in "occupied Arab historicPAlestine," not in part of the historic land of the Jews. His history rewrite shows his bigotry and ignorance. First, the name "Palestine" always meant "land of the Jews" since the Roman Emperor Hadrian changed the name of Judea to "Palestina" in 135 A.D., after he had defeated the last Jewish rebellion under Bar Kochba. (Hadrian also outlawed Judaism and renamed Jerusalem, "Aelia Capitolina," "Aelius" being his gens name.) From that time on, "Palestine" was synonymous with "land of the Jews" and "Palestinian" with "Jew." That is why, after World War I, Great Britain was given the "Palestine Mandate" as "the homeland of the Jews."
Calling Arabs "Palestinians" is the consequence of Soviet propaganda, for Egypt under Gamal Nasser and the Soviet Union in Cairo in 1964 invented the "Palestine Liberation Organization" (P.L.O.), with all the phoney history Asim is appealing to. This organization came to fame when it massacred the Israeli athletes at the Olympic Games in Munich in 1972, and so the phoney identity of anti-Jewish Arabs as "Palestinians."
Arabs conquered the historic land of the Jews, "Palestine." The name "Israel" is ancient and the term "land of Israel" (Eretz Israel) is ancient, going back to Jacob who won the name of Israel after wrestling with God all night ("Israel" means "wrestles with God."

    • Indioviejo

Accusing prof. Dershowitz of being an Islam brasher is a badge of honor to be worn with pride. I consider any Arab supporter, any Islamic supporter to be an enemy of humanity. The quote from the Koran, the 5:82 is cited daily in Egypt as they deal daily with the poor Coptic Christians who lost a nation when Islam conquered them back in the VII century. Ever since then they have suffer 2nd class status in their own country, and lately, and in front of the worlds TVs, rape and murder in Tahrir Square. I stand with him and anyone ready to confront Islam anywhere. The Satanic Cult must be destroyed.

    • RUI

Trying to pit Christians against Jews. Pathetic and desperate. What a lazy little eunuch you are, trying to make others to fight your petty hatreds out, because you're too much of a coward to own up to it.

"historic palestine" has never been a sovereign state at any point in time. If so, can you name any one palestinian leader before Arafart? If palestine was a country, what was its official language? Its currency? What cities belonged to it? What culture and traditions (other than teaching Jew hatred to their children) were a feature of the palestinians?

      • Michael

In reply to the second part of your "argument", I would say that there have been, and still are stateless peoples in the world, such as the Kurds. That does not delegitimize their existence, nor should it afford them less respect.
To follow your logic, why don't you name me the Jewish leaders before Ben Gurion, since the Jewish tradition goes back so far.

  • @LibertysSpirit

Dershowitz is to blame for his situation himself. He along with his leftist Jewish cronies allowed the progressive movement to become virulently antisemitic and did nothing about it. They were so afraid of not being seen as politically correct that they sold out truth and now are reaping the rewards. Dershowitz has a nerve to complain about what happens to him. It's all his own fault. Jews like him and other liberals chose Obama, the most anti-Israel, pro-Islamist President in USA history to be their hero. I can't tell if Dershowitz and his ilk are simply stupid or suicidal. The problem is that these losers are taking the rest of us with them.

And as far as academia is concerned, did it ever dawn on any of you so called brilliant PhD holders that if enough of you stood up to the hypocrisy of the anti-Israel movement and filed complaints, stood your ground and demanded freedom of thought and speech you could get rid of the haters in your departments. But I guess that would actually taking concerted action and having some backbone. Better that you whine and try to get the rest of us to feel sorry for you. Which byt he way is not going to happen ever.

    • AnOrdinaryMan

Absolutely right. And Dershowitz supported Obama AGAIN in 2012. A complex man he is–go figure him out.

  • WildJew

Professor Dershowitz, you and your critics should have a least one thing in common. Your support for Barack Obama. I would submit, this twenty year disciple of Reverend Wright provides an encouraging atmosphere for BDS advocacy and other anti-Israel events on campus.

  • Chezwick

I'm with the Liberty Spirit and Wild Jew. Dershowitz seems hopelessly unaware of the organic linkage between the liberalism that defines him and his far-left critics. The far left sets the agenda and, sooner or later, the liberals always fall into line. Those like Dershowitz who straggle behind on any particular issue are demonized.

There is no place on the liberal/left for defense of Israel….much less for the defense of human liberty. It's high time for Allen to admit he's been wrong all these years and to start embracing conservative policies and values.

  • theleastthreat

"It should come as no surprise, therefore, that so many pro-Israel young academics refuse to speak up. I know because they call and discreetly tell me about the fear they have that they will be subjected to the same kind of McCarthyite tactics that I am subjected to."

Time for them to pluck their own feathers and put on some armor then. The alternative is to submit anti-semitism. And the horse it rode in on.

    • Indioviejo

Do not demonize McCarthy. He did a thankless job for an ungratefull country. He was doind in the fifties what Robert Spencer and other heroes are doing now.

      • theleastthreat

I cited verbatim what Dershowitz wrote near the end of his article. Those were his words and not mine. People still like to say those kinds of things regarding McCarthy even when they don't know much about the history of that era and prefer to repeat popular sentiments about him. More recent scholarly work, such as "America's Most Hated Senator", tells a different story in light of the Venona files and concludes McCarthy was right far more than he was wrong.

  • Loyal Achates

Oh yes, Dershowitz sure has suffered for his defense of Israel, especially in academia…how's that endowed chair at Harvard treating you, Dershie boy?

Are you one of those "progressives" who never bite the hand that feeds them – the regressive Islamofascists who murder women over "family honor", execute gays, enforce dress codes for women, practice female genital mutilation, murder Hindus, Jews, Buddhists, Christians, the wrong kind of Muslim, that rape the entire world with $100 per barrel oil, hijack planes, bomb passenger planes like Pan Am 103, issue death sentences (fatwas) on writers and cartoonists?

If that's "progressive", I have FREE passes for tours of Hindu temples, Jewish temples, Christian churches in downtown Mecca to give you.

  • poetcomic1

Not all attacks against Israel come from the hard left. I am traditional 'Latin Mass' Catholic and note the high level of support for Israel among many others like me. The exception, of course, is Patrick Buchanan who has a 'thing' about Israel – while the entire Christian population of the Muslim world is under brutal assault of unprecedented proportions he reserves an extraordinary amount of bile for the children of Abraham. As for Jewish traitors and kapos and Obama-voters….that is another story.

    • slider 96

Buchanan is a long time anti-semite , who has expressed admiration for Hitler .

      • slider 96

BTW poetcomic1 , what's a " Latin Mass Catholic " doing condemning ANY jews ??Not to mention 162 million fellow Americans . When you attend Mass , do you think everyone in the church voted for Romney ?

  • bkopicz

Until one goes to a liberal website you don't realize how pervasive anti-Israel/antisemitism is the norm. I am not referring to extreme left but mainstream liberal sites like the Huffington Post were if you believe the existence of Israel is a good thing and has the right to defend itself you belong to a small minority, a site which Zionist are Nazis, terrorist are freedom fighters and moderators have a low threshold for tolerating your support for Israel.

Again, this is not a small fringe group of far left or right extremists but very much a significant body of main stream liberals which is very frightening.

    • Mary Sue

their posters are probably stacked with Muslim Brotherhood types.

    • Sound&Fury

Exactly. It has become fashionable for the Left to accuse Israelis of all sorts of human rights offenses. Their attacks are nothing more than a pathetic attempt at revisionist history.

  • @historyscoper

The trouble with Dershowitz is that he got OJ SIMPSON OFF, stinking himself up for any other cause he supports :)

If Dershowitz is for defending Israel, why does he say he supports a 2-state solution? There can only be a 1-state solution: the Jewish State of Israel, reaching from the Nile to the Euphrates, with the fake "Palestinians" told to hike back to the gigantic Arab Ummah and leave poor outnumbered surrounded Israel alone.

Fro my study of history I'm forced to conclude that a thousand years from now the existence of Israel is far more likely than the existence of the U.S.

Take the Historyscoper's free online course on the 3K-year history of Jerusalem and Israel and arm your mind with the facts to fight for Israel:

      Dershowitz didn't get OJ off.

It was the GREAT Johnny Cochran.

I disagree with the verdict by a jury of OJ's peers – congenital MORONS, like it or not but Johnny Cochran got his client off.

I don't blame Cochran, I blame the brain damaged jury which the prosecution accepted.

      • slider 96

NO , blame the dumbass cops , who did sloppy work .Suppose it wasn't OJ on trial , and there was no history of violence or abuse or a nasty divorce , the broken inexplicable chain of custody regarding the blood evidence opened the door for a defense based on evidence tampering . Your a detective in a high profile case , youhave gathered blood evidence , so you decide to drive around with it in your car , leave the car , then deliver the evidence hours later ? Then have another cop whose record of remarks allow the defense to play the race card .
The inompetence of the prosecution added to it .Anyone who's ever worn leather gloves in winter and then got them soaked in any liquid would know they will shrink .Add a jury that was most likely going to be partial and needed a reason , and you wind up with an aquittal .
How many times have we all heard a jury after a trial say ," we knew he was guilty but could not convict based on the evidence presented " ? The Defense need only raise doubt in the mind of ONE juror , to start a cascade with the rest .

    • Ittamar bkk

Correct. Alan thinks he is the greatest supporter of Israel yet he advocates land for peace. 12 million Germans were thrown out of Easter Europe after WW2 with no compensation. 50million were thrown out ofIndia/PAKIstank. So why is land for peace the only solution for Israel? Why is land for security not an option? Israel keeps all the land and compensates the Arabs when throwing them out to the Kingdom of Trans paleSTINE. Israel will thus have its rightful Divine Land and have security assured. Who wants or needs peace with Arab savages? Its worthless and therefor meaningless. All Alan does is damage the hard work of those who truly are trying to save and protect Israeli's. We are better off without the likes of Alan.

  • BS77

Israel is NOT the problem in the Middle East. Just look at Syria, where some 40 000 people have been slaughtered in two years of barbaric violence. Look at Somalia, Sudan, Libya or Afghanistan where people are killed like flies, where women and children live in horrible conditions, slavery, ignorance, filth and unbearable poverty. Only brainwashed leftist idiots ignore these facts.

According to the UN it's 60,000+.

      • BS77

Is it 60,000? That is terrible. What a catastrophe. I cannot imagine the suffering of the average man, woman and child over there…the cities are in ruins, the water, electrical power and food situation is dire….there are tens of thousands of refugees attempting to get into Turkey and Jordan. The UN has done nothing.

    • EarlyBird

I don't think even brainwashed leftist idiots blame Israel on the horrors in Syria, Afghanistan, Libya, Somalia or Sudan, do they?

What the left does, instead, is point to the horrors being done in the name if Islam and then cast aspersions on ALL religions, as if there is no difference between the values and behavior of Muslims, Buddhists, Christians, or Jews.

  • Aisha2

Alan Dershowitz is a treasure to the Jewish people. We are so fortunate to have him as our son and brother.

    • Ittamar bkk

Alan is no son or brother. He defends Israel as he would any other country's right to exist in peace. He sees Israel as he does any other nation. The fact is that Israel was give by Elohim to his people and it is not for Alan to dictate that land for peace is the only option. All Alan does is weaken those who are truly sons and brothers by agruing against them just as he does against the extreme left. As someone wise once said: land for peace: we'll keep the land and give you peace.

  • Choi

Despite Alan Dershowitz's OUTSTANDING record of SUPPORT for Israel,he could /should have OVERCOME his genetic loyalty to the Democratic Party, and NOT helped them keep that" ROTE' Jewish vote.
WHY Dershowitz ,a BRILLIANT person,if ever there was one, could Support Obama and HIS Democrats is a GREAT MYSTERY.
Dershowitz ,OPENLY REPUDIATING O and HIS party could have been a GAME CHANGER re: "The Jewish Vote" but he chose to remain "loyal" to the word(s)'Democratic Party" ,even after that Platform Fight at their Convention PROVED beyond ALL doubt ,that the Democrats are NOW Anti-Semitic and HATE Israel.

    • Mary Sue

Probably because issues like Gay Marriage are at least as important to him as Israel, but politically he has to really choose between one or the other…thus he supports Obama.

  • slider 96

Yea, throw him under the bus because he's a Democrat .He's forgotton more wisdom and intelligence than any 20 of you . This is why the Tea party conservatives [misnomer-conservatives ] will be minimized and marginalized into meaningless ranters in the next few years . Teabaggers broadbrush the other 3/4 of America who do not hold their views and think them to be right wing morons . The Palestinians have nothing to do with the name Palestine.
The name Palestine is named after the Philistines, not the Palestinians or any Arab group.
The name Palestine was applied by the Romans, as a chagrin against Israel.
It was certainly not directed or bestowed to the Arabs in this area.
The Philistines were from Crete and came to Israel 3000 years ago and were not Arabs or Muslims. Delilah and Goliath were Philistines. (Philistines died out.)Philistine is the name the Romans renamed Israel as a chagrin against the Jews.
Yassir Arafat was not a Philistine, but an ARAB born in Egypt. Philistine originates from the Hebrew verb Palash, which means to invade. So the Arabs who started to call themselves Palestinians in the late 60's are invaders and they want to create an Invadia state.

  • Doug Mayfield

As a non-Jew who supports Israel, the issue to me is freedom and individual rights, for which there is respect in Israel, versus rape, murder, slavery and other atrocities, which are endemic throughout every Islamic country around the world.

While supporting Islam in general and the Palestinians in particular, the Left in America is not bothered by such evil acts because they have long ago abandoned any support for freedom and individual rights in favor of dumping their Socialist nonsense into the law books.

Professor Dershowitz is on the receiving of their bile because he dares not to go along with their plans for tyranny and the destruction of any country which favors freedom and individual rights, including Israel.

  • Ghostwriter

Oh yeah,EarlyBird. You're such a "great" defender of Israel. You and slider 96 blame Israel every chance you get. The Israelis aren't screaming for the deaths of Americans. They're pro-American. I'll wait for your reply Ghostwriter , you lied about me blaming Israel for anything . So prove it .

Liberalism is mental disorder and even such talented people like A. Dershowitz have that disease. It is impossible to seat simultaneously on two chairs: to be Democrats and to be against hard leftists line against Israel. Democrats=leftists=neo-commies, etc. They have much with Islamo-nazis ideologically but tactically they position still as Israel supporter. With Obama triggered ME radicalization by his Cairo speech and further activity in foreign affairs and his hostility against Israel, his open arrogance ageist only one real ally of our country, only one democratic state in ME to be his supporter…. Mr. Dershowith you should choose whom you with or expect to be on sidewalk .

Both parties have moved to the left.

The once sane, liberal, pro-America Democrats have become leftists, and the Republicans (excluding Moron Paulians) have moved to the Center.

  • @TophStewart

Alan, they only attack you and others like you personally, because they have no political or academic argument that can even come close in debates against yours. You are an inspiration to many.

  • Ittamar bkk

Alan is self righteous. He should do some deep soul searching and understand that religious zionism is greater than him and his religious humanism.. Rabbi Meir Kahane is Alans true nemesis, not the extreme left. The debate between Alan and Rabbi Kahane is a black stain on Alan. All the books he can write and all his op eds and speaches will never fill that black hole. The only way Alan will truely be content with himself is if he acknowledges his arguments against the greatest Jew of our lifetime were completely foolish and based on utter nonsense.
Watch their debate on youtube and see Alan for who he really is. Alan, your op ed here has no meaning. The extreme left are not worth the effort. Fight for the truth, Elohim's truth.
Of all 613 commandments only 1 is dangerous to life. That commandment relates to war and WE are commanded to not compromise an inch of our devinely given land. Anyone who ascribes to anything other than war, such as compromise, is a traitor. Not only is Alan a traitor for willing to compromise with a people who are uncompromising, he seriously believes those same people have some kind of "case" or "claim" to our devine Land and he bases it not on history or truth but on emotion and the respect of others opinions.
I do not have to respect others opinions when they are baseless and horrid. Doing such only weakens my possition and damages my chances of gaining respect of decent people. Alan, you are 1 step forward and 2 steps back which means Israel and Jews would be better off if you shut up and teach classes or defend murderers in court.

      Great comment, Ittamar!

    • @TophStewart

Don't you realise that any religious belief is a. Danger to freedom. The Orthodox Jews are disgusting in their behaviour towards work, women etc. I abhore Islamists but Orthodox Jews are Also very backwards…. A nd I am among the strongest israeli supporters you will find

      • Ittamar bkk

I do not subscribe to the view that religions are bad, just as I do not believe guns are murderers. What people do with religion (or guns) is either good or bad. Your comment is based on strong arguments but is not an end in itself. Your support of Israel is based on natural truths that are clear to you, such as paleSTINE having never existed as a country or culture or race and that the Arabs of that region use lies to acheive an evil quest of dominance. I value support such as yours. I expect nothing more than the simple backing of truth over lies, good over evil. These opposites are not on a level playing field and do not change according to opinion or perspective. Yet, far too many cannot understand that. Hitler believed he was doing good, so does that mean he was good? Of course not. Yet what tool allows us to make the distinction of good and evil irrespective of perspective? The Jewish Bible. This rational can befully appreciated if time was taken to study the Jewish Bible. I cannot and will not attempt to do this with you as it requires will on both our parts, and in any case you seem to already have the teachings ingrained into your being so there is not much point.
As for Orthodox Jews, there is good and bad like all sections of ssociety. My hero and life teacher is the great Rabbi Meir Kahane. He loved life, innocent life. He understood how valuable innocent life is and how evil mass murderers are. He understood that fighting evil for the sake of good is part and parcel of being good. This resonates with my beliefs that I have held since my earliest memories. i will not compromise with wrong over right. If its right its right and if its wrong its wrong. Listen to Rabbi Kahane speak. Listen to Mark Stien and Robert Spencer and Pat Condell. All are modern day heros and all come from different backgrounds.
Dont loose sight of what really matters by giving too much thought to meaningless issues such as problems within the Orthodox Jewish community.

@LibertysSpirit —- 'And as far as academia is concerned, did it ever dawn on any of you so called brilliant PhD holders that if enough of you stood up to the hypocrisy of the anti-Israel movement and filed complaints, stood your ground and demanded freedom of thought and speech you could get rid of the haters in your departments. '

Very important point. If those in academia stood together and articulated the fact that if Israel's surrounding Islamic neighbors are successful at wiping it off the map, not only would this result in another holocaust, it would be the catalyst for the entire ME to turn into one long and bloody orgy of Islamic infighting over stricter and stricter enforcement of sharia law.

  • Omar

Sharia law is the law of Allah. Although both sharia and Allah are clearly evil, unfortunately only the latter is fictitious.

  • Thomas_h

Had Dershowitz been a gentile, he would have been busy engineering Obama's Israel-hostile policies the way he had engineered the strategy for successfully defending OJ Simpson.
OK, at least he is not a Kapo like Chomski, Finkelstein, Bloomberg or Soros, and almost entire left Jewish intellectual establishment.

Prof. Dershowitz, welcome to my world. I once was a student who had been bathed in the water of liberal thought. Events happened to me that would enlighten my paradigm. I became a pariah because I bought a gun. I was outcast because I became a decent Christian who believed that Jews in Israel were responsible stewards of Palestine, considering their charge. I watched the news and read the 'papers and came to the conclusion that there was much slanted reporting and editorializing. I am seeing your precious religion/ ethnicity torn asunder by its very own persons. I am also sorry that this injustice is happening to you personally. You have the resources a la Howie Carr's wife, the story of which your detractors have not lowered themselves to check. Don't get mad, get even.

  • Independent

Prof Dershowitz, I appreciate your defense of Israel. I appreciate it very much.

But you voted for Obama and Obama is the most anti-Israel president I've ever seen. Obama's advisers and buddies are anti-semites and Israel haters.

So why did you support him?

You could have influenced others to not vote for him but instead you supported him.

I suppose, it's because he is a law professor by trade and an Israel defender by recreation. I don't believe that he did not realize that Obama reelection would endanger Israel, as it would the United States. But the lawyers are probably better off – on the whole.
