Alice Walker’s New Jew-Hating Lows

Alice WalkerPulitzer Prize-winning author Alice Walker has further burnished her anti-Semitic credentials. Her latest book, “The Cushion in the Road,” is replete with an abundance of anti-Jewish rhetoric, including 80 pages devoted to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in which she compares the Jewish State to Nazi Germany, bashes Jews and Judaism in general, and suggests that Israel should cease to exist.

Abraham H. Foxman, director of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), illuminates the thrust of Walker’s latest effort. “Alice Walker has sunk to new lows with essays that remove the gloss of her anti-Israel activism to reveal someone who is unabashedly infected with anti-Semitism,” said Foxman. “She has taken her extreme and hostile views to a shocking new level, revealing the depth of her hatred of Jews and Israel to a degree that we have not witnessed before. Her descriptions of the conflict are so grossly inaccurate and biased that it seems Walker wants the uninformed reader to come away sharing her hate-filled conclusions that Israel is committing the greatest atrocity in the history of the world.”

The ADL cites a dozen essays contained in a section of the book titled “On Palestine,” in which Walker makes the effort to justify terrorism inflicted against Israelis. She even rails against black churches whose leaders cite Biblical passages in which Jews emerge triumphant. “It amazes me, in these churches, that there is no discussion of the fact that the other behavior we learned about in the Bible stories: The rapes, the murders, the pillaging, the enslavement of the conquered, the confiscation of land, the brutal domination and colonization of all ‘others’ is still front and center in Israel’s behavior today,” Walker writes. She then compared the plight of Palestinians with the treatment of black Americans. “It is because I recognize the brutality with which my own multi-branched ancestors have been treated that I can identify the despicable, lawless, cruel, and sadistic behavior that has characterized Israel’s attempts to erase a people, the Palestinians, from their own land.”

Walker condemns Israel for its moral values, which are based on little more than a feeling of “supremacy,” further noting that Israeli settlements are based on the idea that “possession is nine-tenths of the law,” a lesson she claims she “learned from my Jewish lawyer former husband. This belief might even be enshrined in the Torah,” she contends.

Walker’s “Jewish lawyer former husband” was civil rights attorney Mel Leventhal. Apparently the reality that Leventhal’s parents fled the Holocaust made no impression on Walker, who takes a cheap shot at the man in her book. She describes a meeting with an elderly Palestinian women who accepts a gift from the author. “May God protect you from the Jews” the woman says. “It’s too late, I already married one,” Walker responds. Several paragraphs later she takes another shot at him, his family, and Jews in general. “These were people who knew how to hate, and how to severely punish others, even those beloved, as he was,” she writes.

Regarding an encounter with a young Israeli soldier manning a checkpoint, Walker is equally contemptuous. “I couldn’t bring myself to use the ‘N’ word, but I did say,  ‘Don’t you think this behavior — insulting, threatening, humiliating — makes you all seem rather Germanesque? I meant the old Germanesque of the late thirties and early forties, not the current Germanesque,” she explains. When she speaks of Israel’s treatment of the Palestinians, all of the typically libelous catchphrases are employed in the effort. Thus, Israelis are responsible for “genocide,” “ethnic cleansing,” “crimes against humanity,” and “cruelty and diabolical torture.” Walker also hammers the 2009 Toronto Film Festival, comparing it to Nazi propaganda festivals established by Hitler leading up to WWII, and conceived to “make the bully look more respectable.”

Comparing Israelis soldiers to Nazis no doubt enables her to rationalize Palestinian terrorism perpetrated against innocent Israeli civilians. Walkers believes it is “dishonest… that people claim not to understand the desperate, last ditch resistance involved in suicide bombings; blaming the oppressed for using their bodies where the Israeli army uses armored tanks,” she contends.

Walker’s latest anti-Semitic outburst follows a familiar pattern. In 2011, she announced her participation in the Freedom Flotilla II, the second attempt to break the Israeli naval blockade of the Gaza Strip. The effort, aimed at delegitimizing Israel’s determination to keep weapons from being smuggled into Gaza, ended in failure, one that even former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton labeled “neither necessary or useful.”

Walker even alienated radical leftist Rabbi Michael Lerner. Lerner had second thoughts about letting her give a speech on Yom Kippur, one he characterized as “so lacking in nuance and filled more with attitude than facts or analysis,” due in large part to Walker’s completely unsubstantiated claim that Israeli soldiers raped Palestinian women.

Lerner went further. “I personally experienced some of her remarks as offensive to me and her manner of talking to us dismissive and put-downish and her perception of the Jewish people seemed largely ignorant of the tradition of Jews that we represent and that has been growing worldwide,” he wrote. “So I want to apologize to our community for subjecting you to this talk.”

In 2012, Walker again stirred up controversy when she refused to allow her most famous book, “The Color Purple,” to be translated in Hebrew. Writing a letter to Yediot Books, Walker insisted that Israel engages in “apartheid” and must change its policies. “I would so like knowing my books are read by the people of your country, especially by the young and by the brave Israeli activists (Jewish and Palestinian) for justice and peace I have had the joy of working beside,” she wrote in the letter. “I am hopeful that one day, maybe soon, this may happen. But now is not the time.”

Last month, Walker, along with the Boycotts, Divestments and Sanctions (BDS) movement that advocates an economic boycott of Israel, turned their attention towards entertainer Alicia Keys, pressuring her to cancel a July 4 concert in Tel Aviv. In a personal letter to Keys, Walker warned Keys about “putting yourself in danger (soul danger) by performing in an apartheid country that is being boycotted by many global conscious artists.”  Walker urged Keys to visit her website where she can learn about the “unconscionable harm Israel inflicts every day on the people of Palestine, whose major ‘crime’ is that they exist in their own land, land that Israel wants to control as its own.” She tells Keys the information at that website will provide the singer with “a wonderful opportunity for you to learn about something sorrowful, and amazing: that our government (Obama in particular) supports a system that is cruel, unjust, and unbelievably evil.”

Keys wasn’t buying it. “I look forward to my first visit to Israel. Music is a universal language that is meant to unify audiences in peace and love, and that is the spirit of our show,” she told the New York Times.

In a piece entitled “The Conspiratorial World of Alice Walker,” Commentary Magazine’s Jonathan Kay reveals how far beyond the borders of reason Walker has traveled, noting that her “recent musings about world-domination plots still serve to disqualify her from the mainstream marketplace of ideas.” He refers to her effusive praise of a 2010 book,  Human Race Get Off Your Knees by author David Icke. Icke is a one-time professional soccer player convinced the earth has been taken over by giant lizards that have taken human form. Kay notes that Icke is a long-time fan of the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, and his book makes constant references to “Rothschild Zionists,” who control vast numbers of corporations, NGOs and media organizations, and who have inflicted vast amounts of misery on the Palestinians.

According Walker, the book is “amazing,” “stunning,” “magical,” “profound” and “the ultimate reading adventure.”

Thus, it should surprise no one that “The Cushion in the Road” represents little more than another brick in Walker’s ever-rising wall of anti-Semitism. Thanks to people like Alice Walker and others, anti-Semitism in America has become more “trendy” than ever.

This is clearly irrational projecting of her psychopathic hatred of her ex-husband.

  • OfficialPro

Too bad her ex husband jewish lawyer couldn’t teach her what “apartheid” actually means. You’d think she’d married a Palestinian Muslim, for crying out loud.

  • ElizabethMC

While Walker is defending Arabs, she’d be smart to accept the position of a second class citizen when she’s around them, considering that that’s how women are treated in that culture.

    • StanleyT

Not only that – she’s a Black woman, making her doubly inferior in their eyes.

Every ethnic group has their “gangs” but the Motorcycle gangs are a bit different. They form based on the love of motorcycles (and maybe influenced by Easy Rider), and crime comes after. They usually consist of middle aged men, and are patterned after the Mob in their criminal enterprises. Inner city gangs form because fatherless children want a sense of belonging, and they commit crime because they CAN because the neighborhood they grew up in practices “head in the sand” parenting: invariably the mother (or grandmother) will say when little Tyrone is arrested “My Tyrone is a Good Boy™” and do everything in their power to stonewall and deny and protect their precious budding thieving, graffiti-tagging, drive-by-shooting, crack dealing, rapist child. Denial, it’s not just a river in Egypt anymore.

Much as I decry the Arab view of non-Arabs, Israel was wrong to resettle any Ethiopian Jews. The “Jewish” lineage of those people is highly in doubt, and in any event, they’re blacks. As we all know, blacks don’t mix well in any non-black-majority country — including our own.

          • ML NJ

I don’t know that their lineage is any more in doubt than my own, and certainly of the Russians that Israel accepted as Jews. (About my own, I only know back to my great-great-grandparents.)

There are some incomplete texts which were found amongst the Dead Sea Scrolls for which the only complete version comes from Ethiopia. (E.g. The Book of Enoch)

As for problems, with the Israeli blacks, I’ve not observed any. I’ve been there four times since the Ethiopian airlift, most recently for two weeks back in 2010.

Israel has broad anti-discrimination laws that prohibit discrimination by both government and nongovernment entities on the basis of race, religion, and political beliefs, and prohibits incitement to racism. The Israeli government and many groups within Israel have undertaken efforts to combat racism.
Ya…and that sounds EXACTLY like the laws in Arab/Muslim states that alice walker defends.
        Steve, Get a life.

      • GymMom66

Let’s see – how are blacks treated in Israel? I see black men and women serving in the army, alongside their white and olive-skinned compatriots.

I see black students represented fairly at colleges and universities, in proportion to their representation in the general population.

I see black doctors and nurses, lawyers and businesspeople.

I see a black, Jewish (Ethiopian background) winner of Miss Israel.

In operation Solomon, Israel RESCUED over 14,000 Ethiopian Jews whose lives were in danger in their home country. While other countries brought black people to their country to enslave them, Israel brought black people to their country to free them.

Speaking of “Germanesque,” I wonder what this peabrain thinks when she flies from anywhere in the USA. Actually I’ve been behind Arabs at checkpoints, even the random ones set up during the 2001 intifada. You see, I know firsthand about this, and you’ve only read propaganda about it. Yes, they got more than the cursory glance I got, but little different from the inspection I get when I park under the Metropolitan Opera House in NYC. I was just as delayed as the Arabs. I knew why and I didn’t mind.

As for the “Palis” needing to come into Israeli areas for jobs, markets and doctors, I guess I might ask why they don’t have these things in their own towns.

The Torah clearly states that when Jews forget their identity and try to copy their idol worshiping neighbors those neighbors will eventually reject the Jew. This may seem counter intuitive but it is the only argument that explains the long term consistent rejection of Jews by so many people. The bible is often counter intuitive but then again we are dealing with divine forces and not human logic.

Talent at writing and the wisdom and judgement to distinguish between good and evil do not necessarily come together.

Alice Walker is a talented writer. I won’t debate whether or not she is overrated, but she does have talent.

What she lacks is wisdom and judgement. She is using her talents to promote vicious, malignant propaganda lies. The fact that she has the ability to move people’s emotions, and sway them so that they believe her lies is very dangerous.

A quick study of history shows the fallacy of your lengthy screed.

After the initial establishment of Palestine, meant to be a homeland for the Jews, a division was made and the land west of the Jordan river, called Transjordan, was to be the much larger division of Arab Palestine while the land east of the Jordan was to be Jewish Palestine.

Truth is, no division of territory with the Jewish people is acceptable to the Islamists. They do not want peace; they want to destroy Israel and exterminate the Jews.

The core texts of Islam and the constitutions of their terrorist organizations state and mandate their hate for Jews, their barbaric violence, political and military aggression, terrorism (aka jihad) and numerous violations of human rights and justice.

          • Conniption Fitz

Islam IS a racist hate group that makes the KKK look like the Rotary Club.

        • Gee

So Ireland, Germany, Greece and Japan are apartheid states, right? They to have a right of return. It does not affect any citizens of Israel.

The Arabs didn’t own the land – they were colonists from other Arab regimes.

We don’t fund towns of non-citizens, as for Israeli towns they are funded by the taxes they collect. If the towns don’t collect taxes from their citizens they don’t get funded.

You are a moron that still doesn’t even know what apartheid means

        • OfficialPro

If I were them I wouldn’t let terrorists back in to Israel either…

BTW They GAVE UP GAZA wholly to the Palestinians. The Palefakians run the join in Gaza, no Israeli governance whatsoever. Can’t they be happy with that?

        • glpage

Did you do a cut and paste from the ISM web site? The right of return, if it were applicable to anyone, would apply only to the few Muslims who, for the most part, willingly left Israel prior to the attack by the surrounding Muslim states in 1948. So, that is a bogus claim. Many of the other issues are due to the PA and Hamas refusing to provide for their people. The rest is probably from Palestinian backed web sites. At best, most of you you posted is from unreliable sources. Did you know that most of what is now modern Israel was bought from Arab land holders who charged outrageous prices for what they thought was worthless land? They figured the Jews would not be able to survive and would leave and so they would reclaim what they willingly sold. Also, the vast majority of Muslims living in Israel when the Arab nations attacked in 1948 were migrants from those surrounding countries; they went to Israel to work because their home countries were so poorly governed there was either abject poverty or rich rulers.

Her ‘evil’ Jewish ex-husband married her in the 1960’s and took a lot of flack and hate mail etc. for it. He was an impassioned old style liberal and important civil rights lawyer committed to the movement for racial equality. Ten years later they divorced ‘very amicably’ as both agreed. I grew up with old style liberal Jews who were in the front lines of the Civil Rights movement. Nice payback!

Jews marched with Martin Luther King, for all the good it did them in the eyes of militant activists in the black community that have more in common ideologically with the Ku Klux Klan than anything else.

      • Steve Fair

Jews were also some of the biggest segregationists as well. Robert Levitt was a classic example.

Your favorite party, the Democrat Party, is the one that invented the Ku Klucks Klan.

          • Steve Fair

And your party, the Republicans, currently houses the KKK.

          • cptbman

Wrong. That would be the Democrat Party…your party.

          • Steve Fair

Yeah right. Seems to me that the Dems elected the first black President, are totally racially diverse and that the GOP is the White Citizens Council.

          • OfficialPro

Um, the Democrats demonize any Black that dares step off the “reservation” to espouse Conservative beliefs, thus making sure that over 80 percent of blacks vote for continuing food stamps and the idea that “The Man” is keeping them down, rather than the deliberate enslavement by liberal politicians and policies. Last I checked the GOP also had Indian, East Indian, Asian, and Black members.

The first black president is a meaningless thing given that voting based on race is stupid (rather than based on policies). Would I elect a white pro abortion man who is anti gun and militantly legislatively vegetarian, just because he is a white man? HELL TO THE NO. Don’t be a sheep, man. Only Sheep vote for Obummer. Would you vote for Allan West?

          • OfficialPro

steve unfair, the Republican party isn’t “un-diverse” (well actually it is diverse) because of “racism”. It’s “un-diverse” because Minorities were sold a bill of goods by the Left. And y’all continue to buy into the lie that only the Democrats can save you from The Man, when they ARE “the Man”.

          • EarlyBird

The GOP would be diverse if more minorities were wealthy business people. The leaders of the party are not racist per se, but at best they just don’t care about the issues that affect non-whites, particularly black people.

Sadly, rather than expanding opportunity Jack Kemp style, both parties have been quickly consolidating an oligarchy, but especially the GOP.

          • Steve Fair

Most blacks are Democrats because we know the GOP caters to ignorant rednecks like you. That’s no place for any black person with pride and intelligence.

          • OfficialPro

I’m not a redneck, there are no rednecks here, rednecks do not even EXIST here. What do you mean, caters to rednecks? In what way? What is it about GOP policies that are of necessity anti-black? Can you even articulate that in a way that makes empirical sense (rather than propaganda you’ve obviously bought into because you do NOT question at all the racism inherent in the Democrats’ position)?

          • OfficialPro

Would you vote for Allan West? He’s black!

          • Gee

And Abraham Lincoln was a Republican. The Southerns that created segregation were Democrats.

Just a couple of real facts for your ignorance

          • EarlyBird

Yes, and how is this relevant to 2013?

          • cptbman

Obama is half white with no slave ancestry, so he is not the first truly black President. Or did you ignore that fact again out of desperation?

Yeah, the Dems are so racially diverse that they have no blacks in the Senate (the GOP does, Tim Scott) and no Indian-American governors (the GOP has two, Jindal and Haley). All three were proudly voted for by white conservative Republicans and opposed by White Citizens’ Council Democrats, who voted against them because they were not white. Black Democrats voted against them also because their white Democrat masters told them to.

Yeah, there sure is a lot of diversity in the KKK Dem party (racial AND political). /sarc off

          • Steve Fair

Actually there is a black Democratic US Senator. Mo Cowan of Massachussetts. A black Governor from one of the whitest states in America, Massachussetts, Deval Patrick. Haley looks mighty white to me. Scott was appointed to the Senate and will probably lose the general election because a black Republican can never get elected at the top of the ticket because the GOP has too many racists. Meanwhile the Democratic party has SCORES of black and hispanic elected officials as well as whites. The GOP remains the white people’s party with a few colored tokens.

          • OfficialPro

That doesn’t make any sense. The GOP does not have “too many racists”. Otherwise people like Allen West or J.C. Watts would never have been elected. And J.C. Watts was elected in FREAKING OKLAHOMA!!! So don’t give me that old sack of corn pone. Herman Cain nearly made it but the Democrats destroyed him the way they tried to destroy Clarence Thomas. Do you deny that Blacks that are conservative Republicans face a HUGE stigma from the Black Community at large, preventing many of them from even considering stepping into the political arena? Being called an Oreo, an Uncle Tom, etc? Because the “Black Community” bought the goods and drank the grape koolaid a la Jim Jones, and are living in the failed results of voting Liberal Democrat. Just look at the inner cities. Guess who runs ALL of them? FREAKING DEMOCRATS MAN! They don’t help you! They just pat you on the back and give you enough food stamps to BARELY survive so you’ll vote for them one more time!

          • Steve Fair

Where are Watts and West now? Cain got gundecked by his fellow repubs. You can’t blame black Republicans not getting elected on blacks because most blacks don’t vote Republican. Black Republicans can’t get elected because to many Republicans are anti-black and won’t for a black not matter how much they grin and tapdance. And your prving your racism right here by suggesting the Dems get my vote by giving me welfare. I’ve been a taxpayer since I was 17 you pathetic racist. And most black people do not live in the hood but are working to middle class. YOU are the reason why blacks vote Democratic. We know what the GOP represents. The racist vote.

          • OfficialPro

J.C. Watts retired. He actually believes in term limits, you know. Or weren’t you aware of that? Allen West had a very hotly contested seat and may have been a victim of voter fraud.

I’m not talking about blacks not getting elected for the Republican party. I’m talking about blacks RUNNING for the Republican Party in the first place. Who wants to go through that media rectal exam? Republicans have a hard enough time with that proctology in general, but the non-white ones have the added pressure of being accused of being race traitors.

Republicans not voting for a black man because they are black does NOT make ANY sense WHATSOEVER. Do you seriously think a white Republican, allegedly racist, would pick Bill effing Clinton or John Kerry or Nancy Pelosi over a Herman Cain, a J.C. Watts, or an Allan West?

You’re not on welfare, great, but doesn’t the promise of Government GIVING you things, and your fellows things, encourage you to vote Democrat? Isn’t Government Largesse what you believe is basically reparations or something? And I was using the general “you”, not the specific you. I told you before, I’m NOT GOP, I don’t even live there, I douldn’t vote GOP if I wanted to. There are no black people here (well ok not NO black people, but strikingly FEW), but I don’t assume they’re all on welfare. However I do know why the ones who ARE, vote Democrat.

You don’t even know what racist means, if you’re calling me that. I do not believe blacks are inferior. I do not believe whites are superior. I do not believe a person should be treated unfairly based on the color of their skin. The minorities I have frequent contact with are not black, but rather Indian, east Indian, and various flavors of Asian (mostly Chinese and Korean, but a few vietnamese as well).

Lemme guess, you either learned your poisonous ideas at your grandpappy’s knee, or at the knee of some liberal leftist college professor. Or both? Communists in the family perhaps? It’s Republicans that helped LBJ pass the Civil Rights Act, didn’t you know?

          • Steve Fair

And those Republicans who supported Civil Rights were LIBERALS. Those animals don’t exist anymore. All the modern leaders of conservatism…Goldwater, Reagan and Buckley were ANTI-CIVIL RIGHTS. The GOP is a anti-civil rights racist party today that has become a refuge for the former southern segregationists. Didn’t YOU know?

          • OfficialPro

Well, guess where Goldwater is now. He never got much traction. Reagan anti-civil rights? What, did he repeal the Civil Rights Act? No, he did not. So what did he do that you’re complaining about?

Or are you just complaining about them being against (gasp) Affirmative Action and calling that “anti civil rights”? News flash, that’s NOT “anti civil rights”. We have affirmative action here, only it’s not for blacks. It’s for Natives (Indians). There’s actually been federal job ads for positions within the bureaucracy which basically read NO NON-INDIANS NEED APPLY. Considering there is an incredibly TINY pool of qualified applicants that are Native, shouldn’t the job go to the best qualified person, rather than “x person of race whatever because we need to fill a quota”?

I’ve heard that some former segregationalists joined the Republican Party, but that’s not as big a problem as the Democrats pandering to people who want the Government to take care of them. You know what happens when the government takes care of people? They learn not to take care of themselves. Indians make up the exact same percentage in jail HERE, as blacks do (as a proportional amount of inmates) in the US. This isn’t a racial thing. This is a Government Taking Care Of You RUINS YOUR CULTURE.

          • EarlyBird

Bubba, “half white” or not, you’d run just as fast from Obama if he was passing you in the street as any other “real” black person. And most black Americans have plenty of white in them too, from their ancestor’s former white owners. So Obama is as “black” as we’re gonna get. Or did you ignore that fact again out of desperation?

The reason the GOP is considered a very, very white party is because it doesn’t pander to minorities. It panders to white people and wealthy people of all colors.

          • OfficialPro

Pandering is a bad thing, dude.

          • OfficialPro

Au contraire. My party is not the republican party, mainly because I’m not in America. My party is the Conservative Party, which has never ever been KKKish. And no, the Republicans never have housed the KKK at ANY time. Whoever told you they did, was smoking way too much crack.

          • EarlyBird

Are you a member of the British Conservative Party, or some such party in the US?

          • Steve Fair

I bet that you care that Al Sharpton called Jewish storeowners “interlopers”. You never heard of the “Levittown” housing developments up and down the east coast states bankrolled largely by taxpayer money and up until the late 70s totally off limits to blacks at the edict of the developer, one Robert Levitt?

  • Charles Martel

When will the black community at large realize their group was not the only to be brutalized and enslaved. European people were enslaved and thrown to lions. The Vikings and Vandals terrorized people surrounding them. None of these groups have chips on their shoulders. Get over it.

    • EarlyBird

The difference is that black people are still kept down. Just on a day to day basis, your life is a lot easier by virtue of being white (I am assuming) than being black, in the way that everyone encounters you, from your boss, the cops, the taxi driver, etc. I’m not saying that a black person can use discrimination as an excuse for failing in life, but it does exist and it’s easy for you and me to just blithely say “get over it.”

  • DeShawn

Man, this article is just another example of JEWISH RACISM. You jews can’t stand the fact that intelligent black folks no longer stay on the plantation you created for them. • tyke007

Steve Fair, I know where you are coming from, but you need to realise you are being used by the Far Left as a means to bring down the capitalist system.
The Left doesn’t care about truth or facts, it’s aim is to destroy capitalism and it uses Black victimology to help it’s cause. Jews have always been blamed for capitalism because despite their small numbers and history of being persecuted, some have been very successful.
Feminism also is not about womens rights, it is about women being used by the Left as another ‘victim’ group to help in the fight against capitalism.
Please educate yourself and free your mind, read the section in ‘Discover the Networks’ on this very site which explains how the Left have kept Black people down by encouraging a victim mentality.
No one suggests capitalism is without flaws or that the right wing has all the answers, it’s more about understanding how the Left has brainwashed so many of us for so long, and used us to attack capitalism for its own ends. Having said that, I live in the UK where free healthcare is an amazing institution and one I am happy to pay taxes towards, trouble is our welfare systems are being abused now and do need regulating.

People who get married to make some kind of political statement rather than for love and shared goals and values, have terrible marriages and produce unhappy, angry and confused children. When they divorce, there is a lot of anger and bitterness and even hatred. Children of Holocaust survivors often have a need to make some kind of penance for what THEY did not suffer. So in this case, Mel Leventhal married a black woman who hated him and his people. So much for his great fight against racism. He ended up marrying a devout anti-Semite and producing another one — his daughter. Way to go, Mel!

Black Republicans don’t demonize the majority of the black community for the pleasure of the white bigots they work for?

    • OfficialPro

Lemme guess, you don’t criticize gang activity? Why would someone not criticize criminal activity? What exactly are Black Republicans demonizing? Single parenthood? BTW who did you learn this nonsense from?

      • Steve Fair

Are you accusing the “black community” of gang and criminal activity????? All of us? Most of us? What percentage??? Keep talking racist. You make my point every time.

        • OfficialPro

No, I am NOT accusing the black community in and of itself of the actual gang/criminal activity. Please learn how to comprehend what you are reading. I know every American learned how to read WITHOUT Phonics, but seriously, this is ridiculous. What I AM accusing a good percentage of the ghetto community (this would of necessity NOT include middle/working class blacks who do not live in the hood) of, is being the three see-no-evil etc. statues, one that covers their eyes, one that covers their ears, and one that covers their mouth. For whatever reason, they either do not report criminal activity from the gangs, or engage in denial, or actively protect the gang members. It’s most likely because they’ve been taught that The Man just goes around arresting black people whenever they feel like it, so that ANY time a black person is under an arrest warrant, even if the person in question is pretty much guilty, they’ll hide them, say they never saw them, etc. Or maybe they’ve been threatened and are too scared to come forward. This has been going on for so long, the problem is nearly unsolvable. The cops are every bit as much at fault, btw, as either political correctness or just plain fatigue render them disinterested.

You know where they find the most bigots? In places where there people experience crime that just happens to be committed by black individuals. It’s a well-known psychological effect. If the only black person(s) they really had contact with mugged them, why wouldn’t they start to go racist? If the only contact a black person had with a white person was a white person robbing them (or hell, just yelling racial slurs at them), I would guarantee you that black person would be VERY likely to just start hating white people in general.

Calling me a racist doesn’t make me one, given you don’t even know what the term means, obviously.

    Alison Weir
Washington Report on Middle East Affairs
    November 2009, Pages 15-17

In August Sweden’s largest daily newspaper published an article containing grisly evidence suggesting that Israel had been taking Palestinian internal organs. The article, by veteran photojournalist Donald Bostrom, called for an international investigation to discover the facts.1In this photograph taken March 22, 2007, Vasile Dimineti holds a picture of his 24-year-old son, who died a year after selling his kidney. The family lives in the impoverished Moldovan village of Mingir, where about 40 of its 7,000 residents are thought to have sold a kidney. AFP photo/Daniel Mihailescu/Files

Israel immediately accused Bostrom and the newspaper of “anti-Semitism,” and charged that suggesting Israelis could be involved in the illicit removal of body parts constituted a modern “blood libel” (medieval stories of Jews killing people for their blood).2

Numerous Israeli partisans repeated these accusations, including Commentary’s Jonathan Tobin, who asserted that the story was “merely the tip of the iceberg in terms of European funded and promoted anti-Israel hate.”3 Others suggested that the newspaper was “irresponsible” for running such an article.4

The fact is, however, that Israeli organ harvesting – sometimes with Israeli governmental funding and the participation of high Israeli officials, prominent Israeli physicians, and Israeli ministries – has been documented for many years. Among the victims have been Palestinians.

Nancy Scheper-Hughes is Chancellor’s Professor of Medical Anthropology at the University of California Berkeley, the founder of Organ Watch, and the author of scholarly books and articles on organ trafficking. She is the pundit mainstream media call upon when they need expert commentary on the topic.5

While Scheper-Hughes emphasizes that traffickers and procurers come from numerous nations and ethnicities, including Americans and Arabs, she is unflinchingly honest in speaking about the Israeli connection:

“Israel is at the top,” she states. “It has tentacles reaching out worldwide.”6

In a lecture last year sponsored by New York’s PBS 13 Forum, Scheper-Hughes explained that Israeli organ traffickers, “had and still have a pyramid system at work that’s awesome…they have brokers everywhere, bank accounts everywhere; they’ve got recruiters, they’ve got translators, they’ve got travel agents who set up the visas.”7

Lest this sound simply like a successful international concern, it’s important to understand the nature of such a business.

As Scheper-Hughes describes it, organ trafficking consists of “paying the poor and the hungry to slowly dismantle their bodies.”

Organ traffickers prey on the world’s poorest, most desperate citizens – slum dwellers, inhabitants of dying villages, people without means or hope. Traffickers promise them what seem like astronomical sums of money (from $1,000 to $10,000) – which they frequently don’t even deliver – in return for vital internal organs.

For traffickers, human body parts are commodities, to be cut out of the bodies of the poor and sold to the rich. The organ “donors” receive no follow-up care and end up worse off on many levels – physically, financially, psychologically, socially – than even their original tragic situation. Sometimes they are coerced into such “donations.”

Organ sales have been illegal in most countries for years. The United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime, which covers prevention, enforcement and sanctions in trafficking of humans, includes in its definition of human exploitation the extraction of organs for profit.8 Israel finally passed legislation against organ trafficking in 2008.9, 10

In her Forum 13 lecture Scheper-Hughes discussed the two motivations of Israeli traffickers. One was greed, she said. The other was somewhat chilling: “Revenge, restitution – reparation for the Holocaust.”

She described speaking with Israeli brokers who told her “it’s kind of ‘an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. We’re going to get every single kidney and liver and heart that we can. The world owes it to us.’”

Scheper-Hughes says that she “even heard doctors saying that.”

For many years Israelis in need of an internal organ have gone on what experts call “transplant tourism” – traveling to other nations to obtain internal organs. Sometimes body parts are obtained from those freshly dead; more often from the desperately needy. While affluent people from numerous countries and ethnicities engage in this practice, Israel is unique in several significant ways.

First, Israelis engage in this at an extraordinarily high rate. According to a 2001 BBC report, Israelis buy more kidneys per capita than any other population.

Second, Israelis have the lowest donor rate in the world – one-fifth that of Europe, according to BBC. This is in part because there has been a widespread impression that Jewish religious law prohibits transplants as a “desecration of the body.”11 The Israeli news service Ynet reports, “the percentage of organs donated among Jews is the lowest of all the ethnic groups.”12

Third, the Israeli government has enabled the practice. For many years the Israeli health system subsidized its citizens’ “transplant holidays,” reimbursing Israelis $80,000 for medical operations abroad. Much of the remaining costs could often be obtained from government-subsidized13 Israeli insurance plans.14 In addition, Israel’s Ministry of Defense was directly involved.

Scheper-Hughes discussed Israeli organ trafficking in detail in 2001 in published testimony to the Subcommittee on International Relations and Human Rights of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.15 In her extensive testimony, Scheper-Hughes stated that although Israel had become a pariah for its organ policies, Israeli officials exhibited “amazing tolerance…toward outlawed ‘transplant tourism.’”

She described an international syndicate which was “organized through a local business corporation in conjunction with a leading transplant surgeon, operating out of a major medical center not far from Tel Aviv,” and which had forged links with transplant surgeons in Turkey, Russia, Moldavia, Estonia, Georgia, Romania, and New York City.

The Israeli Ministry of Defense was directly involved in what Scheper-Hughes called Israel’s “‘illicit [in other nations] national ‘program’ of transplant tourism…Members of the Ministry of Defense or those closely related to them” accompanied transplant junkets.

In her Forum 13 lecture, Scheper-Hughes said that investigating Israeli organ trafficking over the past decade had taken her “from country to country to country to country.”

One of these is Moldova, the poorest country in Europe – and homeland of Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman – where 90 percent of the people earn less than $2 a day. A 2001 BBC report on organ trafficking described the situation: “Hundreds of Israelis have created a production line that starts in the villages of Moldova, where men today are walking around with one kidney.16

Another is Brazil, where a legislative commission found that 30 [it may actually have been as high as 60] Brazilians from impoverished neighborhoods had sold their kidneys to a trafficking ring headed by Israelis, with Israeli citizens receiving almost all of the organs, and the Israeli government providing most of the funding.17

The ring had also begun inquiring about buying other vital organs from poor residents, including lungs, livers and corneas.18

An Inter Press Service (IPS) news story from the time reported that Scheper-Hughes testified to the commission that international trafficking of human organs had begun some 12 years earlier, promoted by Zaki Shapira, head of kidney transplant services at Bellinson Medical Center, near Tel Aviv.

Scheper-Hughes reported that Shapira had performed more than 300 kidney transplants, sometimes accompanying his patients to other countries such as Turkey. The recipients were very wealthy or had very good health insurance, and the “donors” very poor people from Eastern Europe, the Philippines and other developing countries.

The chairman of the Brazilian commission, physician Raimundo Pimentel, was outraged at Israeli policies, pointing out that trafficking can only take place on a large scale if there is a major source of financing, such as the Israeli health system. Pimentel charged that the resources provided by the Israeli health system “were a determining factor” in enabling a network that preyed on society’s poorest populations.

In 2004 there were reports that Israeli traffickers had added China to their target donor populations.19 In one recent case an Israeli paid an organ broker $100,000 for a kidney transplant in China from an 18-year-old Chinese girl. She received $5,000 and died following surgery.20

New York Times reporter Larry Rohter pointed out that allowing brokers to operate with few restrictions benefited Israel “by exporting Israel’s organ shortage overseas.” Rohter cites a kidney specialist at Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem who explained that patients who go abroad “‘save the country a lot of money; not only in terms of what doesn’t have to be spent on dialysis, but also by opening places for other people who are on the list.’”21

Many people find governmental complicity in organ trafficking deeply troubling on moral and philosophical grounds.

As Scheper-Hughes testified: “The sale of human organs and tissues requires that certain disadvantaged individuals, populations, and even nations have been reduced to the role of ‘suppliers.’

“It is a scenario in which only certain bodies are broken, dismembered, fragmented, transported, processed, and sold in the interests of a more socially advantaged population…of receivers.” She believes that the risks and benefits of organ transplant surgery should be more equally distributed among nations, ethnic groups, and social classes.

    Organ theft

It is difficult to know how often Israeli trafficking involves outright theft of vital organs from living human beings.

It is not rare for the “donor” to receive little or none of the compensation promised. For example, in 2007 Israel’sHaaretz newspaper reported that two Israelis had confessed to persuading Palestinians “from the Galilee and central Israel who were developmentally challenged or mentally ill to agree to have a kidney removed for payment.” According to the Haaretz report, after the organ had been taken the traffickers refused to pay for them.

On occasion, people are coerced into giving up their organs. For example, Levy Izhak Rosenbaum, the alleged Brooklyn trafficker recently arrested in an FBI sweep in New Jersey, reportedly carried a gun. When a potential organ seller would try to back out, Rosenbaum would use his finger to simulate firing a gun at the person’s head.

The Rosenbaum case, reportedly part of a ring centered in Israel, is the first case of trafficking to be prosecuted in the US. His arrest and the substantial evidence against him may have surprised State Department Countermisinformation Director Todd Leventhal, who had characterized organ trafficking as an “urban legend,” stating, “It would be impossible to successfully conceal a clandestine organ-trafficking ring.” Leventhal called such reports “irresponsible and totally unsubstantiated.”

More often organ theft involves dead bodies – or those alleged to be dead.

Israel’s very first successful heart transplant, in fact, used a stolen heart.

In 1968 Avraham Sadegat unexpectedly died two days after being hospitalized in Beilinson Hospital in Israel’s Petah Tikva for a stroke. When his family finally was able to retrieve his body (the hospital initially refused to release it) they found his chest covered with bandages; odd, they thought, for a stroke victim. Upon removing these they discovered that the chest cavity was stuffed with bandages and the heart was missing.22

During this time, the Israeli press was heralding the historic heart transplant, performed by a team of surgeons who were to become some of Israel’s most celebrated physicians, among them Dr. Morris Levy, Dr. Bernardo Vidne, and Dr Jack Solomon, who harvested the heart.23

When the family began to ask questions, the hospital denied any connection. After the man’s wife and brother had raised a media furor, petitioned three cabinet ministers – and agreed to sign a document that they would not sue – the hospital finally admitted it was Sadegat’s heart that had been used.

Haaretz quoted Sadegat’s tearful wife: “They treated him like an alley cat. From the moment he entered the hospital, they apparently saw him only as a potential source of organs and not as a man in need of treatment. They only thought about how to do the deed without us knowing.”

Sadegat’s medical condition before his heart was removed has not been made public. It is possible – perhaps probable – that up until his heart was removed it was still beating; according to an Israeli media report, “once a heart stops beating, it is no longer fit for transplantation.”24

Even if he was what is now termed “brain dead,” the general view is that family members should at least be a party to decisions regarding the patient: first, whether to “pull the plug,” and, second, whether to donate an organ. At the time, however, Israeli law allowed organs to be harvested without the family’s consent.

Forty years later the hospital held an anniversary celebration of the transplant, despite the fact that, according toHaaretz, the heart had been obtained “through deceit and trickery.” The festivities, which honored surviving members of the transplant team, featured balloons and a red, heart-shaped cake.

In this incident of organ theft (and from a possibly living body), the family was Israeli. Had the wife and brother been Palestinians from the West Bank or Gaza, they would not have possessed the power to force a confession from the hospital, and it is likely that those individuals today calling the Swedish article a “blood libel” or “irresponsible journalism” would have applied the same epithets to journalists reporting questions concerning the historic Israeli heart transplant – if any reporters even bothered or dared to do so.
