While not a big fan of teachers unions, I do have to side with Phil. Every inner city school I've ever known has told me the same thing. The parents of the few kids doing well show up for parent/teacher conferences and back-to-school nights. The parents of kids not doing well don't show up at all. If parents aren't going to be involved with their children's education they're just cooking up a big old pot of failure for their kids.

Exactly right. Teachers is the states are overpaid, and the fact is that while not all teachers are stupid, all the stupid people get 'education degrees' because in most universities they cannot get into any other college on campus, hence the "education college" is generally considered the intellectual sewer. And if you must know the reality in the states, in Israel and in most places is that a high percentage of teachers are young, clueless girls who get a degree in education (the easiest degree to get) and really don't know that much, are not very academically gifted, and drift off to some other field or get married and leave after a few years. Most public school teachers don't deserve to make much because they are barely educated and aren't qualified to do anything really, including teaching.

Good comments... schools are broken because of tenure , unions and politicization .
But even private schools don't really teach many useful skills.
Teaching needs to become decentralized and anybody with a passion shld be able to teach. This is all covered by John gat to in his book" weapons of mass instruction" . Cheers from Australia .

Phil
"No matter how good a teacher is, the child still has to do homework and attend school regularly in order to learn."

There is truth there.

Still I was not impressed by students who were in college to be teachers. If they had the same skills as other college grad I would say pay them as much. But they don't. The union leadership shows that too many teachers are dolts.

Also make teachers work 11 months out of the year like in Europe.

Also, the schools are focusing more on the tests than on learning, and they are focusing more on "skills" rather than creativity, love of knowledge, analysis, synthesis, critical thinking, memorization of facts, etc....everything that used to mean that one was becoming educated (vague as that goal might sound). It's a debacle. My solution: less phony testing, more back to basics, more determination to master a "body of knowledge," more caring about one's fellow man, and more truth. Personally, I don't expect any of this to happen. Rather, we are going to see more and more decline. Where will it end? Probably I agree with William Butler Yeats, who was agreeing with the Bible...it will probably end with the Second Coming

It's never the teachers fault. Funny, they sound just like Obama. The education establishment either created stupid students or they created the stupid parents who don't care about education. Either way, its their fault. The education establishment owns kids for 35-40 hours per week from K-12. Assuming an hour before school and 4 hours after, the parents spend less time with their kids than Big Education. Throw in before/after-care, school activities etc and the time parents spend with their kids is negligible. Since the state is effectively raising kids in the public school systems, THEY are the bad parents.

Whats a depression got to do with the subject at hand. We havent started talking about the profligate spending of the big city schools. We are only talking about their performance.

So tell me, since you were an administrator, did you see or approve of, or help in changing schools test scores? Did you see how they may have dumbed down the tests in order to make themselves look good instead of making sure the children received a good education?
