The Collaboration: Hollywood’s Pact with Hitler

pactIn his blockbuster new book, The Collaboration: Hollywood’s Pact with Hitler, Ben Urwand documents how the film industry went out of its way in the lead-up to World War II to help Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler. Scripts dealing with the German military, including All Quiet on the Western Front, were run by the German government for approval. Full scenes dealing with German treatment of Jews were cut from several movies. Entire projects were quashed because of actual or presumed Nazi disapproval.

After All Quiet on the Western Front, “every studio started making deep concessions to the German government, and when Hitler came to power in January 1933, they dealt with his representatives directly,” Urwand writes. The German government utilized what it called “Article 15,” which allowed the government to ban a company’s entire slate of films if even one of the films was considered anti-German.

In 1933, the German government went even further: they threatened to ban all American films in the country if Herman Mankiewicz and Sam Jaffe went ahead with an anti-Nazi film called The Mad Dog of Europe. The Hays Office, which ran the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors Association of America, tried to shut down the film. The picture eventually ended up being killed thanks to objections from Hollywood funders. “The episode,” writes Urwand, “turned out to be the most important moment in all of Hollywood’s dealings with Nazi Germany. It occurred in the first year of Hitler’s rise to power, and it defined the limits of American movies for the remainder of the decade.”

Nothing has changed.

Since September 11, 2001, the film and television industry has consistently refused to portray Islamists as enemies of the United States. As early as 2002, Hollywood was already cutting Islamic villains from mainstream films – The Sum of All Fears, based on the Tom Clancy book in which Palestinian terrorists gain access to a nuclear device, was altered so that the villains were now, ironically enough, neo-Nazis. That’s not atypical.

Even when Hollywood attempts to portray Islamist villains, it has to apologize for it. In 2005, Fox backed off the Islamic villains in its hit series 24 after pressure from the Council on American-Islamic Relations, and forced star Kiefer Sutherland to read CAIR-approved text: “Now while terrorism is obviously one of the most critical challenges facing our nation and the world, it is important to recognize that the American Muslim community stands firmly beside their fellow Americans in denouncing and resisting all forms of terrorism. So in watching 24, please, bear that in mind.”

Americans are typically portrayed as the moral equivalents of jihadists in film. In The Kingdom (2007), Muslim terrorists bomb a US military installation; the end of the film features the Muslim terrorists and US trackers mirroring each other in their xenophobic rhetoric, pledging to “kill them all.” Rendition (2007) portrayed American anti-terror techniques as the cause of terrorism across the globe. The Green Zone (2010) suggested that Americans invaded Iraq for oil.

As in the 1930s, the question for Hollywood isn’t merely principle, but money. Middle Eastern money now funds a solid share of filmmaking around the globe. Alnoor Holdings, based in Doha, began a $200 million film fund in 2010; Imagenation Abu Dhabi launched a $1 billion film fund in 2008. And regional potentates have invested a fortune in oil money in various US media entities.

The same holds true with China, which is the fastest-growing movie market on the planet. The communist regime pours hundreds of millions of dollars into filmmaking, and just as the Nazis did during the 1930s, pledges to cut off distribution for any films that are considered too anti-Chinese. That’s how the army which invades America in the remake of Red Dawn which was initially Chinese became North Korean after a re-do.

In some ways, Hollywood’s self-censorship today is significantly worse than self-censorship during the 1930s. During that period, at least, there were concerns about the rise of the Nazis; Carl Laemmle, who produced All Quiet on the Western Front, said, “”I am almost certain that [Adolf] Hitler’s rise to power … would be the signal for a general physical onslaught on many thousands of defenseless Jewish men, women and children.” He was right. But today’s Hollywood honchos don’t see the threat of Islamism; they see instead the threat of the United States. They don’t see the threat of China; they see the threat of US imperialism. Unlike their predecessors, they are ideologically aligned, in too many cases, with America’s enemies. And when finances and ideological interests are aligned on behalf of America’s enemies, American viewers are in serious trouble.

Don’t forget: When the book “World War Z” by Max Brooks was made into a movie, they cut out the part about the plague originating within China and about how it spread through China’s unethical organ trade, mainly as a way to appease Chinese investors and to avoid causing them to withdraw their funding.

Money talks, and Hollywood listens. Nothing has changed since WWII and earlier…

      Bury the Hollywood propaganda machine.

Film is a very powerful medium – able to influence people more than books or radio.

The thesis of this book is without merit.

The film industry was subject to pressures from the US government (Roosevelt administration) – the Hays office, and various groups in the US which were isolationist, FAKE anti-war and antisemitic as they were anti-black, anti-Catholic, proto-fascist / pro-nazi-Germany.

Columbia Pictures and The Three Stooges made two films which lampooned national SOCIALIST Germany. One of which included Uncle Joe Stalin as one of the villains!

The Three Stooges – You Nazty Spy

The Three Stooges – I’ll Never Heil Again
The above is the one which slams socialist “Stalin” – clearly seen at 14:35 – along with Moussolini, Imperial Japan and a “Turk”.

And if any shameful history needs to be explored, book length, it’s the New York Times, which buried the extent of the Holocaust in the back pages of the paper.

I wonder if the NY Times would review such a book – or bury such a review in the back pages.

Joseph Kennedy, while ambassador to Germany and a pro-German to boot, warned a large gathering of Hollywood moguls to lay off Nazi Germany. Hollywood movies are show business, and their profits in foreign countries were threatened. The Warner brothers had defied Kennedy, Hays, and Breen in their I was a Nazi Spy movie (1939). The relations of Hollywood to Italy under Mussolini are much more criticizable.

Ah, yes. National SOCIALIST Germany. See? Nazism was “Leftist.” Actually, “socialist” had a very different definition in the mind of the radical Right than in the mind of the Communists. Of course, Nazism has everything to answer for. But the notion that it’s simply another example of progressivism is absurd.
I’m a big fan of the Three Stooges, including the Farrelly brothers movie of last year. But the notion that opposing Nazism automatically makes one a “conservative” is way off base. Hollywood producers back in the Forties overwhelmingly were as much on the Left as they were Jewish. It was as Jews, not as “conservatives,” that they opposed the Hitler regime.

Don’t forget Charlie Chaplin’s “The Great Dictator”

John Wayne talks to Michael Parkinson, 1974. The Duke talks about Hollywood’s use of “Critical Theory” to depict Americans as cowards. Who Blacklisted who?

    Hollywood And Communism/Socialism 6/2000

    • TheOrdinaryMan

Duke Wayne was right about High Noon. So why did Gary Cooper, a patriotic American, make it?

      • Seek

Did you not see “High Noon?” Some of the townspeople joined Cooper in the end.

        • TheOrdinaryMan

No, they didn’t. The only one that helped Cooper was his wife(in the movie), played by Grace Kelly.

  • silvergonzales

America is a great country for Americans but for much of the world’s dreamers of an American type democracy, Anglo government and corporate leaders are their biggest enemy.

      They fear success.

History is repeating itself! Maniacle dictators are at it again!

There is no such thing as Islamism. There is only Islam. The Islam of the Koran. The Islam of Mohammad. The Islam of the terrorists. It’s all one and the same.

  • Paul of Alexandria

I like watching Criminal Minds and the CSI shows, but I’m getting rather tired of the bad guys always being white, right-wing fundamentalist terrorists. They have NEVER had an actual Muslim terrorist on any of those shows, much less an “unsub” who was black.

    • jgeorgia2000

Agree on CSI’s mostly, but CM is based on serial killers usually so not so many blacks there. However all avoid Jihadists. But allow ‘demos tic’ terrorist that are always white not arab.

      • A. C. Bend

Actually, African -American males are over represented by a factor of 3, relative to their percentage of the population, in the ranks of American serial killers.

        • Edward

Can you provide a link to support that statistic?

          • chet

Don’t know about 3 to 1, but there certainly are enough of them.

          • A. C. Bend

Sure. Google Justin Lee Cottrell’s book, “Rise of the Black Serial Killer.” Also, “African Americans and Serial Killing in the Media” by Anthony Walsh of Boise State University. Cotrell’s work is more detailed and definitive, but you should be able to find Walsh’s article online.

        • Nabuquduriuzhur

The problem with that is that 8 of 11 homicides are by black americans. If you count gang members who kill for years, then most serial killers are black. If you make it an arbitrary category designed to include only whites, then you can say it’s almost exclusively white.

        • aquataine

Nope, only one to date; the rest are/were white. Just a fact.

Boycott TV as long as they unjustly demonize whites.

Demonizing whites without cause. Turn off the tube.

    • Clare Spark

It is true about the villains on these shows. See “Criminal Minds and the pathology of rural America.”

      • aquataine

        Daveed was IDF/Mossad

Which is a propaganda lie. NCIS is spewing nonsense.

    • Nabuquduriuzhur

i used to watch it, but when it got sicker and sicker, I started wondering what kind of a mind could write this kind of thing. That was 2010 and I quit watching CSI and Criminal minds.

I quit watching CSI New York when they had a group of Satanists they called Vampires, and sanitized it, making it seem they were the good guys. The clincher was when a girl was possessed by a demon and they made it seem like a good thing.

Here in the northwest, we had an occult invasion in the 1970s and 1980s and believe me, when you meet someone who is demon-possessed, it’s not a good thing for them. One woman moved like a snake with impossible fluidity. Her eyes were weird and not from drugs (which was also very common).

Which is why I stopped watching TV altogether. I will not patronize crap demonizing whites without cause.

  • WinstonC

Jonah Goldberg’s book “Liberal Fascism” is an excellent detailed study of the similarities between European Fascism and the American Progressive movement. National Socialism was widely admired by the American Progressive/Lefist elites…at least until the Nazi death camps became widely known. Of course some on the Left has already turned on the Fascists when Germany attacked Communist Russia.

  • Melvin Polatnick

Blacks are portrayed in higher social positions by Hollywood.
A white criminal is often in handcuffs as a black judge scolds him, the black
cop drags the weeping pale faced punk into a jail cell.

The Klan with a Tan, Jim Crow in reverse. I don’t watch TV these days-nothing but crap.

    • Seek

Oh, really? Could you give some examples? I mean, aside from where Morgan Freeman plays a judge.

      • Melvin Polatnick

Judges are almost always black in movies and TV. Others who are often black: police chief, doctor, lawyer, and computer wiz.

Hollywood should be shut down. Anti-white, anti-male, anti-Christian, anti-Western, heterophobic propaganda machine.

  • Omar

U.S. “imperialism” doesn’t exist at all in this world. American “imperialism” is a lie invented by the left in order to discredit American foreign policy and its efforts to bring freedom, democracy and stability in the world. There is Russian imperialism (which includes the former Soviet Years), Chinese imperialism (which has been around since 1949 and which is currently occupying a sovereign country, Tibet), Cuban imperialism (which since 1959, has tried to conquer all of the Western Hemisphere and the world, and is currently dominating the political system of Venezuela), Iranian imperialism (which is an Islamist neo-Nazi movement which seeks to eradicate Israel, destroy all of its political opponents [both domestic and foreign], impose Sharia law and conquer the world), Communist imperialism and Islamist imperialism. Bottom line: America is currently confronting the imperialist Unholy Alliance of leftists and Islamists, both at home and abroad.

  • pupsncats

Clearly, no sane person would ever waste one single dime of their hard earned money to support Hollywood. What Hollywood produces is simply trash. It has no value and like our public education system, is merely a conduit of leftwing propaganda and brainwashing.

  • Steve Burstein

I thought conservatives were smarter than to fall for manipulative rubbish like Urwand’s book. Warners help up the release of “Devils Island” with Boris Karloff over complaints from the French Government, releasing it about a year after it had been made. Did that make Warners complicit in the horrors of the French justice system? Don’t think so. Hollywood didn’t make PRO-Nazi movies either, despite Urwand’s misinterptrtation of known Hollywood classics as such. If one goes back to look at 30s-40s Hollywood films, I think one finds that It’s favorite country was England, even before the war! But Urwand would probably argue that Hitler originally liked England too-Damn!

  • Steve Burstein

I forgot-Hollywood phased out Horror films in the late 30s, in part due to the British Horror ban(but brought them back in 1939).The BRITISH ban! One has to see things in context.
