You are wrong about Marx (see his Wages (1847)) and I see no reason why you should set my political agenda. Capitalism cares not a whit for the fate of individuals including your MD friend who seems to think not taking unemployment insurance is the route to conservative sainthood. Also, as I recall, we weren't discussing interest rates. Wall Street is feasting off low interest rates while millions suffer. The place to march on isn't the Fed but on lower Manhattan. Perhaps you're finally ready to join Occupy?

Harry, I did not lie at all. Marx did not include the unemployed as part of the proletariat. Your phrase "These days" is convenient cover for a budding revolutionary, since you need to include the unemployed as part of the victimized class, which Marx did not.

Believe me, Harry, the middle class feels quite victimized these days as well given the government's mishandling of their health insurance. Even some of the upper-class folks feel victimized. I know a doctor who was just fired as a health care administrator. He is doing very poorly emotionally, but he has refused to go on unemployment. He has been out of work about a month now and will of course not be going on vacation this year. Rather, he is working around the clock to get back into the labor pool. Harry, everyone can be a victim if the Left and Right try hard enough.

You, as a responsible party on the Left, need to reframe the discussion so that you do not reduce the size of the pie available for dividing among the entire citizenry. Otherwise we will wind up killing each other over table scraps. Do you look forward to blood in the streets?

If you wish to work for a socially responsible goal, then march on Washington to encourage it to abandon its zero-interest rate policy. The individual saver, the worker who tried to save for retirement, has gotten blind-sided. The pennies going to savers in the form of 5% interest has now gone directly to the banks. As I child, I knew people who lived off the interest on their savings accounts. Zero-interest rate policies has redistributed the private money in this country so that the worker has been pauperized. It is leftist policies that have managed this slight-of hand. Think about the zero-rate interest policy as having created the opposite of a balloon - a negative balloon, if you wish. Negative balloons collapse as well, with resultant great suffering.

You can do better than stupid framing that creates unsolvable problems for everyone.

I'm not sure I should dignify this argument with a reply since it begins with a bit of legerdemain about "framing" and ends by misinterpreting Marx. (On the evidence of Mr. Yellow's post, it seems unlikely he's actually read Marx.) These days class warfare pits the corporate elites against the working class which includes the unemployed. Unemployment insurance is something workers want, especially in a depressed and unpredictable economy. Throwing unemployed workers off unemployment insurance and food stamps and claiming the moral or logical high ground (starvation strengthens character as Rand Paul would have it) is simply the Republicans latest ploy in their ongoing and very well-funded war against the poor and unemployed. Not that any of these corporate stooges/Scrooges--or Mr. Yellow for that matter--were ever compelled to skip a meal.

Your vision is clouded, Harry. It sounds like someone created your memes and then framed them for viewing. What is the consequence of not limiting unemployment insurance? Employed people paying people who are unemployed: When does that picture become ridiculous? Should 50% of the country pay for 50% of people who are not employed? How about 25% of the people paying for the unemployed 75%? Is it ridiculous yet? Not Yet? How about the top 5% paying for the 95% who are unemployed?

Everything is in the way you frame the question. If you insist on a small number of people paying for a large number of people who are not working, then you have improperly framed the question.

Let me state the problem differently for you. Wealth inequity can promote cooperation, while wealth equality between workers and non-workers enforced by government fiat does not. In short, class warfare is today between the workers and the non-workers, not between the poor and the rich. Even Marx did not include non-workers as part of the proletariat.

Actually, if you want a real life example of how oppression can damage someone, Eric Cheyfitz fits the bill.
After two millenia of powerlessness and oppression, many Jews have come to view power with distaste, even if it is employed for their own self-defense. They have not been able to get their heads away from victim-mode and adapt to a normal existence in a proud and assertive state like Israel. As a result, many embrace leftist dogma as a moral cover for their own retrograde ghetto mentality.
