The problem is that with freedom of the press comes scrutiny, scrutiny reveals truth, truth demands accountability. Nothing about the way the E.U operates implies that they wish to be accountable to anyone, they have a parliament but until the U.K Independence party arrived there it was basically a mutual admiration society, and the E.U parliament runs nothing, the European Commission does, and nobody can explain how the members of the European Commission got their jobs or who they answer to.

"However they do have a legitimate point regarding the plethora of ill- informed online comment on the Internet and other social media; professional journalists do at least have a duty to inform themselves about the matters on which they report, even if some (on all sides of the political spectrum) pick their facts to suit an agenda. "

It's a point for you to argue in context. It's not a justification to grab power and allow the state to decide which lies to peddle. That is the point of the article, not to defend silly statements and trolls on the Internet. If you think some of these lunatics on the web are full of BS, you really want the state to now take over the media and regulate what can be said? This won't even address the root problem. It adds a bigger one to worry about. They need to take away your freedom to express your opinions to address the root problem you mention. They'll do that after they show controlling the mass media wasn't enough to stop "Islam-o-phobia" or "anti-diversity hate speech" or some new Orwellian phrase yet to be invented.

As a British citizen who is, I suspect, well to your left on many issues, I nevertheless share Mr Bawer's concerns about the EU's apparent new power grab.

Which is not to endorse any proposals the HLG may come up with, but I think it's worth bearing in mind.

It seems to me that the HLG crew has quite a famous teacher: in his 1935 book 'Kampf um Berlin" the Reichspropaganda chief Dr. Goebbels has enlightened the German journalists: "Your reader should get the impression that the writer is in reality our speaker standing beside him" and, my, isn't it a dream of all the next Big Brothers, be they from the USSR, the EC or Obamerica!
"So in order to protect real journalists’ rights, it’s crucial to define who is and who isn’t a journalist – and this, too, the report suggests, should be among the powers exercised by the EU."

And we sure can't let the reader make those distinctions. Why citizens can't even arrange their own healthcare or job assignments for that matter. Good thing the government has a plan for all these modern problems.

What this will really do is make an even bigger joke out of the mainstream media who we will all know have clearly become censored. Maybe this is a good thing, as scary as it is. At least they're now admitting they want to control and censor the press to whatever extent they can get away with.

The leftist radicals have emerged for all to see.
