Since this crime was committed on a military base, Hasan has to be charged under Article 118 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice... as such, there is no distinction/option to categorize this as a terrorist act.

In order to charge him as a terrorist, the case would have to be transferred to a civil court... which would probably cause many more problems than it's worth including a public "show trial", endless appeals, etc.

I'm no fan of Obama or his administration, but I believe the right thing is being done here to seek justice.

"The Iranian people ... also clearly know this difference."

When I was deployed to Iraq 2009/2010, a local Iraqi interpreter was telling me that when his father was visiting relatives in Iran, they were hoping that the US would invade Iran to drive out the current regime.

Even many Iranians can see that we are not the "Great Satan" that we are "cracked up" to be.

Of course, that'll never happen. (Its time for someone else, perhaps Israel, to step up to the plate.) Just as well. We're too war weary.

In contrast to your perspective, Canadians don't seem to like either the US or any Americans. I lived there for 7 years, in the Atlantic Provinces. They still adore Obama. So I guess they do like one American. So-called. ;-)

The sad thing is the Republicans are so pathetically stupid and spineless they learned nothing from this.

Yep, it's the logistics that are hard.

Because the number one enemy of Saudi Arabia is not Israel but Iran the Saudis appear to have indicates that Israeli strike aircraft would not be prevented from usinbg Saudi Airspace. Of course, the Saudis will howl in the UN, but they will not lift a finger to stop the IDF.

The Israelis used to have an option going through Turkey, but that has shut down. Otherwise a long flight over the Med, through Turkey and through the north of Iran would have worked. Refueling probably in Azerbaijan (which, like the Saudis, fear a strong Iran).

The irony is that Israel cannot fly through Iraqi airspace, because US aircraft would probably stop them.

Then we have the robotic options. Strikes using drones from Azerbaijan (which the US disgracefully leaked information about; this Democrat Administration really really hates Israel) or cruise missiles from Israeli submarines in the Arabian Gulf.

It is also worth noting that Israel has been acquiring deep penetration bombs and has permission to buy US tanker aircraft (which would greatly aid the logistics for such a mission). In order to get these aircraft Israel appears to have made a few concessions to the relatively hostile (and clearly ideologically deluded) Obama Administration. The Israelis are playing the Long Game and making concessions where they have to in order to be able to act independently. What you perceive as crazy tatical concessions by Netenyahu are actually necessary evils for eventually strategic victory in the face of an idiotic ally (the US).

Through the appeasement of Kerry and Obama the Israeli Government has actually been very shrewd in its decision making. They have been doing the best they can despite some arm twisting and duplicitous leaks from their US "allies". Please don't confuse that with Israeli weakness. Consider the Long Term (strategic) view.

Of course Israel can stop Iran. Want to know why? Because Israel shares a common trait with Russia. When they go to war, they GO TO WAR! They go to win. They know there will be casualties, and they try and minimize them, but they know that the first rule of war is to win.

These days, when the US goes to war its professional military GOES TO WAR! it's leadership (including the senior Pentagon "flag" officers, who are "political animals") hope to obtain favourable conditions for a negotiate peace - without burning too much political capital to do so.

See the difference between countries? the difference is "the will to win".

Israel has the will to win - it has no choice. Especially on the nuclear armed Iran issue.

Because Israel must win, it will win - or die trying (unlikely, given the terrible state of the Iranian military). Only a fool would underestimate Israel's resolve and the significance of this as the determining strategic factor.

I'm from New Zealand. We love America (and Israel, and plenty of other civilized countries too). We also had great hopes for Obama. But now we see his deeds do not match his soaring promises nor stand up for the Constitution and the Enlightenment Values we share. Please realise that even foreigners are smart enough to distinguish the courage, decency and generosity of the American people from the corrupted poltiical parties that govern you.

The Iranian people and Egyptian peoples also clearly know this difference. When America stands for democracy and justice we all support it - when America's leaders act like tyrants then we make the distinction. We can see how the political Left and left-leaning media are ruining America, and Norway, and Sweden, and Germany, etc through Cultural Marxism and Marxist Political Correctness.

Since the rest of the World wants to see the US strong, doing the Right Thing, and acomplishing what only America has the strength to do then we too long for the US to get rid of the parasites that now lead it.

Please don't mistake our disgust and exasperation with US political 'leadership' with a hatred of US ideals or its people. We're hoping enough citizens get mad enough that you actually vote out the politicians who been letting you down and put in more solid folks like David Dewhust and Ted Cruz.

No my friend I believe you are wrong. Israel has the Sampson option. From the death camps of WWII. The Jewish national identity has collectively said never again. Meaning if they feel their nation is going to have to suffer as the Jews in Europe did in the 1940s. They will use nukes to take down every enemy with them. Without giving a damn to world opinion.

Another very real prospect is Syria, pick a side in the civil war it matters not, launches chemical weapons on Tel Aviv. Israel would nuke Damascus in response. Iran would then be forced to attack. Israel knowing this would strike first. Taking out any Iranian nuclear processing facility to limit the Iranian response. The other Muslim nations will be outraged and attack with the aid of the terrorist groups and Palistinians. Just like in 1948, 67, 74, 2000 and 2006 they will get their asses handed to them by the IDF. The Israelites will likely use tactical nukes knowing they cannot afford to loose. Once the dust settles Israel will take over land currently held in Syria, Egypt, Lebanon, and Saudi Arabia.

This will transform Israel into on of the largest holders of oil and natural gas. This will shift the world balance of power and severely alter Russia's position in the middle east. Not to mention the Russian strangle hold on their natural gas manopoly to eastern Europe. As Israel would be fully capable of supplying it.

Once the dust settles Israel will take over land currently held in Syria, Egypt, Lebanon, and Saudi Arabia.

This will transform Israel into on of the largest holders of oil and natural gas. This will shift the world balance of power and severely alter Russia’s position in the middle east. Not to mention the Russian strangle hold on their natural gas manopoly to eastern Europe. As Israel would be fully capable of supplying it.

Sigh. Israel can't stop Iran's nuclear program. There are only two ways to do so; a nuclear attack or repeated attacks with conventional weapons. An 'unprovoked' nuclear attack against Iran by Israel is a political non-starter. That is because of the repercussions. There would be nuclear retaliation by Muslims against Israel. Most likely against Tel Aviv. Israel cannot survive a successful nuclear attack upon Tel Aviv, it's governmental and cultural capital and most populous city. The other repercussion of a nuclear attack by Israel is that it would provide the perfect excuse for Obama to end support for Israel.

That leaves conventional ewapons, which in order to be effective would require an air campaign, which is beyond Israel's capabilities and would also provide Obama the excuse he needs in order to end American support for Israel. This is why Israel hasn't and will not attack Iran.
