Carter at Cardozo: It’s Not the “New-Anti-Semitism” — It’s the Older Kind

The Yeshiva University’s Cardozo Law School is facing a fire storm of protest for honoring former President Jimmy Carter because of Carter’s animus towards Israel. But who they indeed may be about to honor is an old fashioned anti-Semite.

As decades-old tapes from his Church Sunday school lessons reveal, former President Jimmy Carter’s bias against the Jewish state may come more from an old fashioned Christian animus toward Judaism than from concerns over the situation of Palestinians. Carter taught Christian students in Plains Georgia that Judaism teaches Jews to feel superior to non-Jews, that Jewish religious practices are tricks to enhance wealth, and that current Israeli policy toward Palestinians is based on these “Jewish” values and practices.

In a series of sermons Carter recorded between 1999 and 2003 that were published as a CD set by Simon and Schuster called “Sunday Mornings in Plains,” Carter attacks modern Israel by retreading ancient anti-Semitic tropes that go back to the early church fathers and the Judaism/Christianity schism that gave birth to a millennia of Christian persecution of Jews.

(For a thorough discussion of the emergence and analysis of these tapes, see Phyllis Chesler).

Here are salient examples:

[1] Jews hate and feel superior to non-Jews.

In the tapes, one hears — in Southern drawl — his ancient animus: Jews hate non-Jews.:

“…this morning I’m gonna be trying to relate the assigned Bible lesson to us in the Uniformed Series with how that affected Israel and how it affects us through Christ personally… It’s hard for us to even visualize the prejudice against gentiles when Christ came on earth. If a Jew married a gentile, that person was considered to be dead. … How would you characterize from a Jew’s point of view the uncircumcised? Non believer? And what? Unclean, what? They called them DOGS! That’s true. … What was Paul’s feeling toward gentiles in his early life as a Jewish leader? [Paul was not a Jewish leader. Ed.] Anybody? Absolute commitment to persecution! To the imprisonment and even the execution of non-Jews who now professed faith in Jesus Christ. … … We know the differences in the Middle East. But the differences there are between Jews on the one hand who comprise the dominating force both militarily and also politically and the Palestinians who are both Muslim and Christians. …”

[2] Jewish ritual sacrifice is a dodge that relieves one from taking care of one’s parents, while preserving one’s wealth:

“Corban was a uh prayer that could be performed by usually a man in an endorsed ceremony by the Pharisees that you could say in effect, ‘God, everything that I own all these sheep all these goats this nice house and the money that I have, I dedicate to you, to God.’ And from then on according to the Pharisees law those riches didn’t belong to that person anymore. They were whose? God’s! So as long as those riches were belonged to the person, that person was supposed to share them with needy parents right? But once it was God’s it wasn’t theirs and they didn’t have anything to share with their parents. So with impunity, and approved by the Pharisaic law, they could avoid taking care of their needy parents by a trick that had been evolved by the incorrect and improper interpretation of the law primarily designed by religious leaders to benefit whom? The rich folks! The powerful people! Because the poor man wouldn’t have all of this stuff to give to God. He would probably, in fact he might very well have his parents in the house with him or still be living with his own parents.”

[3] Carter ties this Jewish feelings of superiority and religious malevolence to current Israeli policy:

“One reason is that the Israeli government headed now by Netanyahu has to depend on the ultra-right or fundamentalist Jews to give them a majority in the parliament which they call the Knesset, and the recent resignation of foreign minister Levy has left Netanyahu with only one vote margin in the parliament. So the ultra-conservative Jewish leaders demand always that they have total control over anything that relates to religion inside Israel, in particular in Jerusalem. Well, I’m not here to condemn anyone but to point out that even within ourselves, there is an inclination for, I’d say, a feeling of superiority. Wouldn’t you think so? Would you agree? I know I have it.”

Carter’s beef with the Jews is not simply a disagreement over how Israel should treat the Palestinians. His is a deep theological hatred of the type that most Christians (including the Vatican in the 1960s Nostra Aetate) have long disavowed. This is not the “new anti-Semitism: it’s the old. All the more indefensible for an orthodox Jewish religious institution to give this man an award.

Jimmy Carter has an ignominious history of anti-Israel bigotry. Paul Ryan once quipped that Obama makes Carter looks like the ‘good old days.’

However, Carter is responsible for helping to mainstream the anti-Semitic notion that Israel is an apartheid state with his provocatively titled book "Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid", the publication of which prompted mass resignations from the Carter Center.

He has met numerous times with leaders of the terror group Hamas whitewashing their genocidal goals and undermining US efforts to isolate Hamas. And Carter's record of slandering Israel is so voluminous that both CAMERA and Alan Dershowitz have written books refuting his lies. source American Thinker.

However, there has never been a civilization or a nation referred to as "Palestine" and the very notion of a "Palestinian Arab nation" having ancient attachments to the Holy Land going back to time immemorial is one of the biggest hoaxes ever perpetrated upon the world!

There is not, nor has there ever been, a distinct "Palestinian" culture or language. Further, there has never been a Palestinian state governed BY Arab Palestinians in history, nor was there ever a serious Arab-Palestinian national movement until 1964… three years BEFORE the Arabs of "Palestine" lost the West Bank [Judea and Samaria] and Gaza as a result of the 1967 Six-Day War (which the Arabs started).

Even the so-called leader of the "Palestinian" people, Yasser Arafat, was EGYPTIAN! In short, the so-called Arab "Palestinians" are a manufactured people…a people with no history and no authenticity… whose sole purpose for existence is to destroy the Jewish State and the brother of Billy-Beer Carter has spent a career trying to accommodate the PLO.

    • EarlyBird

Carter sure had a weird way of showing his anti-Israel bigotry, considering he was the one to put together the Camp David Peace Accords, which not only got Egypt to stop attacking Israel, but required us to send Israel $3+ billion dollars a year to subsidized its security.

      • Mary Sue

          • EarlyBird

You seem to be confused again, professor.

The topic being discussed here is the Camp David Peace Accords of 1979, which has required America ever since to pay both Israel and Egypt billions of dollars per year to enhance their military security. Israel has been the larger of the recipients, in fact, the biggest recipient of US aid in history.

Let me know if you require any further clarification.

Retread who is probably confused by disclosures on car loans, the deal also included Israel giving up vast territory with significant mineral wealth. They were better off economically before the deal, especially now that Egypt is losing it.

The fact that American pitches in to bribe Israel to give in to Egypt is not evidence that Israel was or is the winner in the transaction Carter shoved down its throat unless you ignore all of the other facts.

          • EarlyBird

But a rabid anti-Semite would have done something like help Egypt attack Israel, not put together a deal which ALSO bribed Egypt to stop attacking Israel.

See? Even if you disagree with the deal, perhaps consider that Carter was just a well-meaning bungler. But in league with Israel's enemies? "Evil" as some are calling him? How absurd.

This hate site, and I don't use that term lightly, uses the most outrageous, hateful, overwrought rhetoric to describe those with whom we have even the slightest disagreement with – let alone genuine enemies. With So Africa, it's easier. Downtowns disintegrating, machinery malfunctioning, crime rampant, racism just as bad as before (but reversed), The only significant difference in So Africa is that whites are getting scr*wed now instead of blacks, but whites had the IQ to make things work. Particularly excellence is watching the Left here observe blacks dealing with outbreaks of witchcraft, raping virgins to avoid getting AIDS, and killing wildlife for food and foliage for cooking.

You're preaching to the choir here and you didn't answere the question. I agree that there never was a so-called Palestinian people and the ones claiming to be "Palestinian" are Arab rejects from other Arab nations… they are more nomadic and born to be troublemakers by their foster parents…those Arab nation which rejected them. Arafat was nothing but a lunatic front person for the radical Islamists seeking to destroy any vestige of Israel being a nation and eradicate its people. Shin Fet did an excellent job in its national security intelligence in taking out radical anti-Israeli terrorists until the Israeli government put a stop to their "tactical" mission.

Winston -I understand I am "preaching to the choir" with you. I am glad you recognize Replacement Theology's insidious grip on some of Christendom. I am also however, commenting here to a broader audience than one person.

            YOU professed "Biblical Christianity."

I then benignly expected that you'd appreciate my Biblical acumen with a humorous answer. (that apparently missed.)

When I said, "That's a good question for Moses, nu? "

The significance: "When has Israel NOT rebelled?" (har-har….laugh track)

In Ephesians 2, Paul reminds us—he says,
“You Gentiles were aliens to the covenants of promise. You were strangers. You had no claim upon God as Gentiles. Those promises in the covenants were given to Israel. But now in Christ Jesus, you who were sometime afar off are made nigh by the blood of Christ. For he is our peace. He broke down this wall of partition that was between Jew and Gentile. And he made of two, Jew and Gentile, one new man.”

The reality is that there are leftists within every Western government who keep pushing Israel to give lands to their enemies of the West. Why is it that so many people continue to rebel against their God and Creator?

I'm not generalizing Christians. I'm generalizing about evangelical, right wing, nutjob Christians who show up on this site. If you're not a bigot, don't be offended.

How can any article about Carter's relationship with Jews and Israel, which purports to be honest and fair, not even mention his brokering of the historic Camp David Peace Accords?! He's by far been the best president in history for Israel, but because he's a lefty, he's some how evil.

No, I will NEVER let you live that down. You are a repulsive human being and in no position whatsoever to lecture anybody else on anything. You sicko.

Antisemitism is getting out of control on an international scale. Jews are being attacked and vilified in places like Sweden, France, Germany, Sweden, and Denmark just to name a few. Hatred of Jews has been used by the left which includes the Nazis as a common cause to solidify their evil intentions. The left will claim the position of being tolerant and then go after the Jews. I lived in Europe for 4 years and I remember a.German.telling me regarding the fate of the Jews during WWII that if they were not the way that they were these things would not have happened to them. This is called blaming the victim. Cater is a prime example of this hatred.

    • bklyn_farmer

      Extremely well said, Thank you

  • Winston

Carter's anti-semitic attitude towards Israel makes one wonder if he has ties to the KKK from his youth. Carter, as a professed "Christian" and teacher of the Bible to his Church groups, should know that he is cursed by not blessing Israel (Genesis 12:7)."I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” Apparently Carter's apostate version of Christianity (replacement theology) is that he believes that the "Church" replaced Israel in getting God's blessing but that is erroneous teaching. Jesus, himself, said, "I did not come to replace the law, but to fulfill it."

Personally, I wish the Iran-Iraq war had gone on a lot longer. Because muslimes killing muslimes is something I never interfere with.

    • EarlyBird

Linda, you are missing information and morals.

Carter didn't "lose" Iran. The US lost Iran in '53 when it overthrew Mossadegh and installed an evil, brutal man, our "ally," the Shah. By the time the revolution came around in '79, the US couldn't keep the lid from blowing on that boiling pot.

UNLESS you're suggesting that we should have helped wage a massive, brutal war against the Iranian people so that we could keep a horrific tyrant in power.

The Shah may have been our "best ally" but he was a nightmare foisted upon a completely, innocent, formerly pro-Western and secular nation, for nearly 30 years.

      • LindaRivera

I absolutely don't agree with the U.S. and other Western countries waging war against other countries. I'm against it. We should have a strong defense and be ready to defend our country in the event of an attack. The Founding Fathers were against being entangled in foreign wars.

As I'm not familiar with Mossadegh (do you have a link?), I cannot comment on that. Years ago, at work, I mentioned the Shah of Iran to an Iranian Muslim. He told me "Those were the good days".

        • EarlyBird

Linda! I will share a link with you. Please understand what we did to Iran to create such rage against us. I'm working on an I pad right now, and it is tough to link, but I will.

But he absolutely, positively blames the entire Islamic Revolution on the coup to unseat Mossadegh. You don't have to be an expert in foreign affairs to figure out how coups and installation of strong men radicalize the societies who experience that against the nation which committed the coup.

Yes, children, even our government can make mistakes. Stop being so infantile in wondering why they hate us so very much.

That's fine and he's entitled to believe that. But do you realize how difficult it is to find unbiased research on the history of any non-Western sovereign? It's not even that easy these days in the West. People are often deceived by events seemingly close to them. They were not eyewitnesses. There are plenty of pro-Iranian Americans and it would be nice to think they are among them. That doesn't mean they were able to decipher all of the propaganda they were taught.

Take a look at the map and see where Iran sits. Is it closer physically to the USA or to say, the former Soviet Union? What was going on in the early 1950s? The Iranians did not just get caught in the crossfire. They like many other sovereigns were trying to choose which gravy train to jump on to. And jumping on the Soviet gravy train meant making accusations against capitalism and seizing private property.

There are malicious people everywhere. Whatever concerns Iranians had about getting a better deal from Western businesses than what they had arranged does not legitimize what they in fact did.

Actually, George Washington made the "avoid foreign entanglements" speech at a time when the United States was still a new country. That was 1796, only 20 years after the United States formed. America was still underdeveloped at the time. Today, the circumstances are different. The United States needs to have a lead role in promoting democracy, human rights and the free market around the world.
As for Mossadegh, he was a Stalinist/Maoist puppet who was appointed by the Iranian parliament and the Shah approved and ratified the choice. The coup formed when Mossadegh got into a power struggle with the rest of the government, suspended civil liberties and abolished all elections. In 1999 US/NATO waged ruthless war for the KLA Muslim terrorist organization against Kosovo's Christian Serbs, winning the war for Islam.

In Libya, US/NATO waged war for Al-Qaeda. In Syria, the U.S. is supporting Al-Qaeda and other terrorists who are specifically targeting Christians for attacks and murders.

What has been achieved in Iraq and Afghanistan? Only bad stuff. We should never have gone to war in any of these countries.

Here is a quick link to "Operation Ajax" which was the CIA's coup d' tat in Iran in '53 which overthrew a popularly elected democratic leader of Iran, and replaced him with the Shah, a dictator.
          http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1953_Iranian_coup_d&…

And a cleaned up version by the CIA itself:
          https://www.cia.gov/library/center-for-the-study-

Also, "Legacy of Ashes" goes into considerable detail on this mission, based on declassified CIA documents.

At the time, Iran was a secular, pro-Western, and cosmopolitan ME country. The Brits wanted to re-obtain power of Iran's oilfields (which it had lost during WWII) and tried to convince Ike to have the CIA overthrow Mossadegh. Ike was very against it, until the Brits lied about Mossadegh's Soviet leanings – a complete falsehood – also admitted to in those declassified papers. So Ike put in the coup.

The rest is history. It is a tragedy for Iranians and Americans.

EarlyBird, you are ignorant of historical facts. The Shah was already in power before Mossadegh was toppled. The Shah was the head of state, while Mossadegh was Prime Minister who was appointed by the Iranian parliament and the Shah approved and ratified the choice (the appointment and approval is similar to how U.S. senators were picked prior to the 17th Amendment. Mossadegh was a Stalinist/Maoist who had connections to the Soviet and Chinese Communist dictatorships. The coup came when Mossadegh got into a power struggle with the Shah and the rest of the Iranian government, suspended civil liberties, and abolished all elections. The link is here: http://townhall.com/columnists/dineshdsouza/2007/… The Shah may have ruled Iran autocratically, but he was much better than the Islamist mullahs running it now. Why don't you talk about what happened in Grenada in 1979 when the KGB and the Cuban intelligence financed Maurice Bishop's New Jewel Movement to topple the democratically-elected government of Eric Gairy?

        • EarlyBird

American Thinker: August 1, 2010 The Islamic Republic Is Not Iran

In 1979, the U.S. government (notably Jimmy Carter and the Company), with the help of its allied forces, created the greatest Islamic terrorist nation on the face of the earth and the spurred the rise of Islamofascism elsewhere. In fact, Jimmy Carter, by his interference in another country, betrayed the most valued friend to the West, the late Shah of Iran. Carter is perhaps responsible for the formation of Islamic terrorism — not only in Iran, but around the world, including in the United States. There have been more than 10,000 Islamic terrorist attacks since 9/11, with 60,000 dead and 90,000 injured. http://www.americanthinker.com/2010/08/the_islami

Perhaps there are overtones in the speech you report, that are not obvious to those who didn't hear it. I couldn't see much to get very upset about in those extracts. Especially since most of it was a history lesson, possibly not completely accurate, rather than current comment.
I did have one question, though. You said Paul was not a Jewish leader. Paul was a Pharisee of the Pharisees. Were the Pharisees NOT the Jewish leaders in the early first century? If not, who were?

    • Ilya

      1. The Saducees, not the Pharisees, were the Jewish elite of Jesus's time – the Pharisees only became prominent after the destruction of the Temple. Jesus, a Pharisee himself, got in trouble with the authorities in the first place because he argued against the Saducee ideology.

      2. The Pharisees were more numerous of a sect but being a part of a majority is not the same as being a leader in the majority. The fallacy is like saying one Paul Ginsberg is a reform Jew in today's America, therefore Mr.Ginsberg is an American Jewish leader. From what we know of his life before conversion, Paul was a tent maker by trade.

      • Mary Sue

and don't forget, Jesus also gained the ire of the Pharisees for criticizing them for their "Laws made by Men".

        • Toni

Mary Sue, Judaism and its teachings are not exactly how Christianity presents it. Keep in mind that the New Testament was not written by Jesus, a Jew, or even by those who knew and heard him directly, and that includes Paul.

We, Jews, have suffered for centuries because how others defined our religion and not what our religion actually is.

Carter was voted into Presidency because nobody knew what he was preaching in that church of his. Also, Ford, while an honest and decent man, sounded like a total simpleton in the Presidential debates, claiming that the Soviet Block countries were totally independent of the Soviet Union.
Carter on the other hand was well prepped for the debate. Only when he became a President did we realize what a moron he was, hence one term Presidency, complements the Democrats for Reagan voters.

Now, electing Obama to the second, that's the real America's shame.

I think the tens of millions of dollars that Carter's foundation and library have received over the years from Islamic and Islamist sources may shed a bit of light on his motivation as well. Obviously it nearly spilled out in to a larger war. However, that doesn't change the fact that even though the superpowers intervened Israel ended up clearly with the upper hand in land possession and control of the enemy's army, or most of it's forward resources. Jimmy Carter is, indeed, an old fashioned antisemite. But from what I have read YU is not the one giving Carter a peace prize, nor the law school. It is a student run journal (Journal of Conflict Resolution) which wishes to give Carter the prize. (And some fear that protesting or shutting down the event would be contrary to academic freedom. What I would like to see happen is a debate — say, Dersh arguing against giving carter the prize vs editors of the journal arguing for Carter getting the prize).

Remember the contention that Jimmy sold out to the Arabs predates his campaign to become President when a bank controlled by Arabs saved his peanut farm from bankruptcy. Bert Lance arranged the loan.

OK, but he also reports millions of dollars from the Saudis. Clinton and Bush also took in similar funding but Bush is clearly not in the same league in terms of returning value on the funds.

One might even wonder if Bush did not double-dupe the Saudis. I don't think he's that smart but at least his actions could be plausibly rational given that he had access to information that we don't have.

No such excuses could ever be plausible for Carter, Clinton, or 0'Bama.

It's up to the reader to decide of party affiliation is merely a coincidence. It doesn't matter much until you have to elect someone again and wonder what the odds are you'll get a sane representative.

      Good luck on that.

This idea of Jews as "Christ killers" is nothing new. As a kid I was persecuted by a son of Nazi German immigrants. What's the point? The anti-semites think that because Paul (Saul of Tarsus) persecuted the early Christians it's ok to be against the State of Israel? It's sickening and illogical. So is Jimmy Carter.

There are many nonsensical pretexts and of course the texts must be twisted by the evildoers to justify their evil.

If Carter, in fact, said these things teaching Sunday school they are proof positive of anti-semitism. Not only are the things he said wild and crazy- some of which I have never in my life heard before- what possible place do they have in a Sunday school lecture except to incite hatred towards Jews. And to top it off when he relates his wild tales from ancient times to explain current Israeli policy- he sounds like a mad man. It's funny. You would think. if the man had a bias is would be against Muslims. They destroyed his presidency and his legacy when they took the hostages in Iran and Carter did not react. Nope. He hates the Jews. Go figure.
