Betrayal in Benghazi

Benghazi-attackThe combat code of the US Military is that we don’t abandon our dead or wounded on the battlefield. In US Air Force lingo, fighter pilots don’t run off and leave their wingmen. If one of our own is shot down, still alive and not yet in enemy captivity, we will either come to get him or die trying.  Among America’s fighting forces, the calm, sure knowledge that such an irrevocable bond exists is priceless. Along with individual faith and personal grit, it is a sacred trust that has often sustained hope in the face of terribly long odds.

The disgraceful abandonment of our Ambassador and those brave ex-SEALs who fought to their deaths to save others in that compound is nothing short of dereliction-of-duty.  Additionally, the patently absurd cover-up scenario that was fabricated in the aftermath was an outright lie in attempt to shield the President and the Secretary of State from responsibility.

It has been over eight months since the attack on our compound in Benghazi. The White House strategy, with the aid of a “lap dog press” has been to run out the clock before the truth is forthcoming.  The recent testimonies of the three “whistle blowers” have reopened the subject and hopefully will lead to exposure and disgrace of those responsible for this embarrassing debacle.

It would appear that the most recent firewall which the Administration is counting on is the contention that there were simply no military assets that could be brought to bear in time to make a difference… mainly due to the unavailability of tanker support for fighter aircraft.  This is simply BS, regardless how many supposed “experts” the Administration trot out to make such an assertion. The bottom line is that even if the closest asset capable of response was half-way around the world, you don’t just sit on your penguin *** and do nothing. The fact is that the closest asset was not half-way around the world, but as near as Aviano Air Base, Italy where two squadrons of F-16Cs are based.

Consider the following scenario (all times Benghazi local):

When Hicks in Tripoli receives a call at 9:40 PM from Ambassador Stevens informing him “Greg, we are under attack!” (his last words), he immediately notifies all agencies and prepares for the immediate initiation of an existing “Emergency Response Plan.”  At AFRICON, General Carter Ham attempts to mount a rescue effort, but is told to “stand down.”  By 10:30 PM an unarmed drone is overhead the compound and streaming live feed to various Command and Control Agencies… and everyone watching that feed knew damn well what was going on. At 11:30 PM Woods, Doherty and five others leave Tripoli, arriving in Benghazi at 1:30 AM on Wednesday morning, where they hold off the attacking mob from the roof of the compound until they are killed by a mortar direct hit at 4:00 AM.

So nothing could have been done, eh?  Nonsense.  If one assumes that tanker support really was not available… what about this:

·     When at 10:00 PM AFRICON alerts the 31st TFW Command Post in Aviano Air Base, Italy of the attack, the Wing Commander orders preparation for the launch of two F-16s and advises the Command Post at NAS Sigonella to prepare for hot pit refueling and quick turn of the jets.

·     By 11:30 PM, two F-16Cs with drop tanks and each armed with five hundred 20 MM rounds are airborne. Flying at 0.92 mach they will cover the 522 nautical miles directly to NAS Sigonella in 1.08 hours.

·     While in-route, the flight lead is informed of the tactical situation, rules of engagement, and radio frequencies to use.

·     The jets depart Sigonella at 1:10 AM with full fuel load and cover the 377 nautical miles directly to Benghazi in 0.8 hours, arriving at 1:50 AM… which would be 20 minutes after the arrival of Woods, Doherty and their team.

·     Providing that  the two F-16s initial pass over the mob, in full afterburner at 200 feet and 550 knots did not stop the attack in its tracks, only a few well placed strafing runs on targets of opportunity would assuredly do the trick.

·     Were the F-16s fuel state insufficient to recover at Sigonelli after jettisoning their external drop tanks, they could easily do so at Tripoli International Airport, only one-half hour away.

·     As for those hand-wringing naysayers who would worry about IFR clearances, border crossing authority, collateral damage, landing rights, political correctness and dozens of other reasons not to act… screw them.  It is high time that our “leadership” get their priorities straight and put America’s interests first.

The end result would be that Woods and Doherty would be alive.

Dozens in the attacking rabble would be rendezvousing with “72 virgins”… and a clear message would have been sent to the next worthless POS terrorist contemplating an attack on Americans that it is not really a good idea to “tug on Superman’s cape.”

Of course all this would depend upon a Commander In Chief who was more concerned with saving the lives of those he put in harm’s way than getting his crew rest for a campaign fund raising event in Las Vegas the next day.  As well as a Secretary of State that actually understood “What difference did it make?”, or a Secretary of Defense whose immediate response was not to the effect that “One of the military tenants is that you don’t commit assets until you fully understand the tactical situation.” Was he not watching a live feed from the unarmed drone… and he didn’t understand the tactical situation?  YGBSM!

Ultimately it comes down to the question of who gave that order to “stand down?” Whoever that coward turns out to be should be exposed, removed from office, and face criminal charges for dereliction of duty.  The combat forces of the United States of America deserve leadership that really does “have their back” when the chips are down.

Colonel Phil “Hands” Handley, USAF (Ret.) is credited with the highest speed air-to-air gun kill in the history of aerial combat. He flew operationally for all but 11 months of a 26-year career, in aircraft such as the F-86 Sabre, F-15 Eagle, and the C-130A Hercules. Additionally, he flew 275 combat missions during two tours in Southeast Asia in the F-4D and F-4E. His awards include 21 Air Medals, 3 Distinguished Flying Crosses, and the Silver Star.

  • dailyconstitutionalist

Someone messed up on his ETE times. It takes LESS that 1 hour to go 522 miles at mach.92. This makes the fact that they did not fly to defend our embassy even more absurd and criminal.

    • Asher

Absolutely….There could have been a rescue of our personel in short order. They could have shot the pants off of the terrorists too to disperse and kill them. We have some of the most skilled pilots in the world.

    • AnOrdinaryMan

Hey, I got an idea: Let's I-M-P-E-A-C-H Obama.

    • Pontotoc Bill

The actual ground speed is what is needed. At FL300 (30,000') and .9 Mach,, I have had ground spped as low as 350 knots. Also, a head wind or tail wind will affect the actual ground speed.

Ground speed is the only valid speed to use to determine arrival times. So, Col Handley is quite possibly correct since we do not know the weather conditions.

My two cents as a retired F-4E/.G backseater.

About 60% of Americans are only wondering one thing….why is President Obama and his Admin. allowed to continue in office???

    • tickletik

Thats an easy one, its because none of us are men. If there were still men in the US, this man would be impeached. Actually, if there were still any men, he never would have gotten into office either.

Well said, Colonel. It's interesting to compare your perspective with Hillary, Panetta, and Obama. None of them know a damn thing about defense, the military, or honoring oaths, and they really don't care. The only thing I can think of that they could possibly fly would be a hot air balloon.

    • Asher

They are dismantling this country, changing everything, destroying the Constitution. The laws have to be enforced by men, and men are not doing squat, except suing, like swating at a fly.

      • M. Demetrius

Asher, you are entirely correct. They know exactly what they're doing, and exactly what/how much the public will tolerate before moving for reprisal. Beck wrote about that theory in_The Overton Window_. Love or hate the author, the premise in his book is exactly right.

If the opposition presses too hard, an event will occur somewhere else to distract and divert. If the opposition does nothing, the next step will be implemented. These people are not stupid, and not acting erratically. The handlers know how to manipulate the Admin Marionettes.

This is the resume of any Leftist. . .whereby; that which is critical for authentic Leadership – is altogether missing in these people. I seem to recall reading something about procurement of new aerial refueling tankers for our aging tanker fleet being cut not too long ago. In the future, we'll probably see the excuse of "no refueling tankers available," a lot more. It's a sly way to hobble the US military, like the 'green' fuel requirement.

  • onecornpone

How much longer will our Congress dawdle over the issue of WHO gave the stand down order… ?

After all, that is really all we need to know, since we already knew the fabrication that "nothing could have been done" was nonsense.

    • M. Demetrius

…until just before the next election cycle, then they'll bluster and posture and pontificate, then once reelected, settle back down to inaction. This process will be repeated as often as necessary.

  • RebeccaJean

The "they wouldn't have gotten there in time to make a difference" argument is extremely week. I think the administration is throwing everything they have at the wall to see what sticks. This "argument" needs to be exposed every time they prance it out. How did they know how long the battle was going to continue? It could have lasted a few hours to days. The stand down command, in my view, was nothing short of murder on the part of the administration.

OBAMA: "Call 911. This is a police matter not terrorism. I'm going back to bed!"

WHY WAS THE TURKISH AMBASSADOR meeting with J. CHRISTopher Stevens? Did the terrorists wait for the Amb. to leave and then attack?

WERE WEAPONS given by Obama to the anti-Qaddafi forces used against these Americans sorta like another Brian Terry/Fast and Furious incident?

WAS OBAMA THINKING MORE OF HIS NEW MUSLIM FRIENDS around the world when he told our forces to "STAND DOWN?"

Was Obama thinking more of his Nobel Peace Prize and couldn't start any type of action that was not approved, or joined, by other countries?

WAS OBAMA STONED, HIGH, DRUNK and he couldn't meet with any group and will make up a cover story that he was on top of another event like "NORTH KOREA WAS ABOUT TO SHOOT A NUKE AT THE SOUTH," or another like on Iran, or monitoring WMD in Syria??? You can bet that when there are demands on his actions that night, he'll come up with a good lie and it will be repeated by the MSM and his zombies!

    • catherineinpvb

'WAS OBAMA STONED, HIGH, DRUNK' – the worst of possibiilities become the most reasonable.

The question would not still be begging an answer; if there was anything remotely legitimate. per explanation. Such a simple question. . .and drugged 'out'/high. . .with – or without – Reggie; can be the only reasons for a curtain to drop over this question; allowing a complete 'black out' re Obama's whereabouts. We have only to recall Obama's 'state' when he showed up – eventually – for his first debate with Mitt Romney. Clearly. . .bleary and worse, Obama; perhaps, now, totally addicted; by his own necessity.

  • slickdemetrius

I agree Obama and company dropped the ball and should be responsible for the deaths of our diplomat and security team, but the one problem with the F16s conducting the flyby and if the desired result failed, firing on the targets is easier said than done.
I'm not an aviator, but have been on the ground during cas and in some cases the pilots may not feel comfortable firing when their is no distinct enemy from the air. They would have a rough time determining who is who from the air and the fear they would have regarding a blue on blue may preclude them from firing. This was not a large open field with one uniformed group against another. Would our guys have been able to communicate with the pilots? Unlikely and there lies the problem.
Either way, those same jets should be used to destroy all Ansar al Sharia facilities today, but that joke of a "leader" is busy playing golf or smoking crack.

    • Sprinklerman

The author, Col. Handley is an experienced combat veteran. You admit that you are not an aviator. I'm more willing to accept his theory on how things would have occured than yours.

      • slickdemetrius

Except I have called in airstrikes (guess what, I am also a combat veteran) from marine pilots and know that aviators in general are pretty much the same mentality.
Do you see any problem with my logic in attempting to distinguish greens vs blues at 200ft while moving at 250 knots, especially at night? Even with night vision, it is very difficult, but I'm sure you know more about such matters.

        • Pontotoc Bill

Slick, I have to agree with you. I flew F-4 E/G Phantoms for the Air Force during the 1980s, qualified in Close Air Support, and know we were instructed to hold fire IF we could not POSITIVELY identify the target. Be it an assigned known target or a FAC given target one minute ago, we do not drop unless we see the target.

As for 250 knots, that was slow. We flew at 480 to 540 knots at 200 feet or lower.

      • EOD_McGee

not all veterans know the ins and outs of daily operations and training methods dude. an army major knows little about sub operations and while the colonel was an awesome af pilot, he was not there under those situations. the pilots would have had a hell of a time figuring out who was who if they did not have radio contact with the ground. use your head a little and read what demetrius said. the last thing i would want on my concience is being blamed for killing my own guys in a rescue op.

        • Roger

So would you ignore the entire situation and not even get support in there?

          That's what Obama did.

    • Drakken

Well to throw that theory right out the window and one who has called in airstrikes myself, the Seals on top of the compound were lasing the jihadist so the attack aircraft would have been able to see who to light up with either straffing runs or a bomb strike.

      • WilliamJamesWard

True, the fact that the Seals were killed because they were there marking targets
with a laser thinking the air support was above them and ready to go, why is this
being missed, it obviates the discussion. The seals exposed themselves as they knew
what they were doing, however they did not know the perfidity of the higher command.
The entire Obama regeme is responsible and culpable in malfeasance and will never
allow our Military to operate efficiently and will grow in thier malefaction……with Obama
the person in charge we are all in danger…………………..William

  • Sprinklerman

There is only one person who could have changed the order to stand down and the end result of Bengahzi; President Obama. He took an oath to uphold and defend the Constitution. He failed. He should resign. Impeachment isn't possible with the Senate in DemocRAT control.

Every American citizen needs to be aware of this critical failure, it's impact on our Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Airmen, and Coasties, and make a change in the Senate in 2014, so that articles of Impeachment can be brought against this rouge administration and be successful in it's prosecution.

  • Anonymous

At last, a real American speaks! Thank you, Colonel Handley. (Early reports had indicated that there had been more than one stand down order issued. Some said that three stand down orders were given — multiple times to different personnel. I believe this needs further investigation.)

    • AnAmerican

Just a theory, but What If BHO just wanted Ambassador Stevens Captured so they could exchange his life for a high ranking al-Qaeda member. When the 2 Marines, who were told to "Stand Down" started to fight back, that infuriated the attackers to KILL him. We'll probably never know since everybody is taking the 5'th. Does anybody else have a better explanation?

Barack HUSSEIN Obama and Hillary Clinton should both be put on trial for Benghazi. Once convicted, put them in orange jumpsuits and air drop them into the Arab Spring nation of their choice.

  • Chet H.

Great rundown by COL Handley. The one thing he overlooked was that no one knew at the time how long this attack would last. It may have only lasted a few hours, but they wouldn't have known that at the time. It could have gone on for days. They never intended on helping them and are now trying to cover theri tracks. Despicable.

    • Roger

Not without more supplies or support brought in for the defenders.

  • tanstaafl

Thank you for putting it right out there, Colonel. Charles Krauthammer says the same thing about Benghazi, viz., that the biggest scandal is where was the (Hah!) Commander-in-Chief during those hours after

There is only one person who can give stand-down orders or orders to go into combat…and we all know who that is.

Of Course Phil is right. We all know that. All the Obama BS coming out is exactly what we have all thought from the beginning.

No one will speak his name – such a shame.
Our gut instincts have been right all along. It is now time to communicate this to the voting populace.

  • Robert

    Thanks Colonel Handley
The problem is why didn't anyone call the administration on its LIE. I googled the USAF webpage specs on the F-16C and got the same data. Maximum Speed is Mach 1.2/915mph/1470nm and 2.0/1500mph/2410nm at altitude but cruising speed with tanks would be Mach .8/.9 as stated and the Colonel should know best. Also ranges given ferry range was about 2,000 miles and 2,600 with drop tanks. Where are the fact checkers? Of course the media will not point this out and go against and contradict its idol Prez (or should it be Prez idle?) . 20mm rounds would be devastating and overkill

  • Dave

Rifleman, you mentioned that there was talk about purchasing new tankers. There were 2 bidders for them one was Boeing and the other was Airbus which is a consortium of European countries unlike Boeing which is a US company. When you buy some equipment for our defense from a foriegn maker what are you going to do if the government of those countries decide that they will not sell you any repair parts. Are the jerks in this administration going to start buying our missiles from North Korea or Iran?

You recall when the cargo ship Mersk-Alabama was hijacked by Somali pirates.

According to a caller on Rush, back then, as the Mersk-Alabama crew was being hijacked, and while they were still in radio contact with the outside, they were contacted by somebody in the White House. They were warned/threatened that if any harm came to the Somali pirates that they (the Alabama crew) would be arrested and put on trial in World Court.

Unknown if the threat came from hussein soetoro himself, or from one of his Commie bosses.

This threat, along with the Benghazi (soetoro’s arms deal gone bad) act of cowardice, becomes nothing less than

How great to be welcomed home by loving hippies who are now our “leaders” or those whom they have brainwashed. That, Yike IS the TRUTH! They HATE the military…PERIOD!!!

        • disqus_tu7SEHpgGp

As a Viet. Vet, I can honestly state that no one spit on you. Your memory is gone, apparently.
Our activities in Vietnam were vile and hateful. You should hang your head in shame for your lies.

          • Goldminer77

Well,”viet vet” you have NO idea what happened unless you were one of the hippies doing the spitting and cursing at us. And you probably were. It HAPPENED!!! I was there; YOU weren’t, or were you doing the spitting?

          • Gene

I am a Vietnam Vet and I am pleased to say that no one ever spat on me. But, it certainly did happen. My good friend lost both legs in Vietnam and spent months at Walter Reed. When the Old Ford Theater reopened after renovation, he and some of his fellow wounded vets were invited to attend the opening. He told me that as they were being taken from the bus to the theater, a crowd of anti war demonstrators formed and jeered at the wounded soldiers and spat on them. My friend’s brother was spat on when he returned from Vietnam and got off his flight in California. He went to the nearest clothing store, took off his uniform and changed into civilian clothing. Recently I met a man who had served with a Marine Infantry Battalion in the northern part of Vietnam the same time I was an advisor there (1968-69). He told me about a firefight his Infantry company had with what later turned out to be an NVA battalion. After his company took care of business, killed or ran off the enemy, he and his fellow Marines cleared and destroyed the tunnels. One cavernous tunnel was full of bags of rice. Each bag had a label with the words: “TO THE ARMY OF NORTH VIETNAM FROM THE STUDENTS OF UC BERKELEY”. This man told me that they had lost some of their friends in that battle and the sight of those labels angered them and brought them to tears. My best buddy in Vietnam told me he was on combat operations there and they sometimes discovered bags of rice from cooperatives (farms) in the U.S. All this sickens me because I lost some of my best friends in that was and I am lucky to be here today, alive and in one piece. I am very upset, more than I can bear, even now as I write this. I can assure you that my memory is very good. My buddies and I delivered aid to poor Vietnamese and 50,000 gifts and cakes to children on National Children’s Day in II Corps Tactical Zone. War is hell, but to characterize “our activities there” as “vile and hateful” is wrong and to tell another vet to hang his head in shame for his lies is, well, vile and hateful. Wwhat the Communist Government in Vietnam is doing to the religious there IS what I would call vile and hateful. I pray for the oppressed people of Vietnam and I pray for my fellow Vietnam vets who still suffer from the effects that war had on them and their families. I pray for the 50 plus thousand dead Americans who went there on orders from our government and for all the others of all nationalities who suffered and died in that war. Finally, I do believe many of those who demonstrated against the war (Question: Really, who if not against war?) were not anti war. Rather, they were anti-U.S. and many of those are America haters today.

      • Robert L Nipper

The Pseudo-President has fired two hundred plus of our Admirals and Generals for “lack of confidence”. The military budget has been cut back to pre-WWII levels. The mismanagement of returning wounded veterans and how they have been treated by the VA under Obama’s incompetent watch. Recently trading five Taliban commanders for one marine deserter. What more substantiation do you need, Nimrod? Obama said, “In times of conflict I will stand with that of my Muslim brothers.” And, that is exactly what he is doing. It’s morons like you that keep supporting an obviously anti-American traitor that currently is infesting the White House. Are you prepared to convert to Islam or die? I ask that because many of you Liberals don’t get it that you will be a target too.

  • Citizen Right

Very conservative times. The F-16s would have been there sooner than the estimate.

But, what about Ty Woods? Do we know the drone was unarmed? The CIA, which is a military organization where everyone wears civies, would have had assets to fight back and defend the Annex, if not at the house or Consulate, or weapons storage warehouse, whatever the hell it was, where Amb. Stevens was killed.

I heard Paneta say, “all available DOD assets”, not “all available assets.” I thought his words were too precise.

Woods, an ex-SEAL, would have known every weapon in the inventory and would NOT have painted the enemy mortar crew unless he was sure something overhead was in position to fire: An armed drone, AC130 with copperhead 105mm shells, F-16 with a laser guided bomb, anything with a Hellfire missile to home in on the target he was lighting up.

I believe Woods was in radio contact with the air support, was told they were ready to fire and painted the target only to have the pilot of the aircraft, whatever it was, be told to not fire. Otherwise, why was Woods painting the target, knowing that it also made him a target?

    • Meathead

Precisely. Woods would not have been stupid enough to paint a target knowing that it gave away his precise location. There are several in the White House that evening who have blood on their hands.

  • Mike Bromley

    • Djuro Jebi

No, I don’t think we leave Nimitz-carriers there. Med is vulnerable. But we may have had an 844 foot Wasp-class amphibious assault ship that would have had Harriers or Ospreys. Harriers with a range of 1400 miles, and a combat radius of 350 miles. Ospreys with ranges of 1000 miles and a combat radius of 426 miles.

I hope you know, Colonel, that people are still passing on your indictment of the traitors in what used to be the American federal government, including obama and hillary. True Americans will never allow this treason to be forgotten.

The prison who disobeyed Tyrant Obama the Liar’s orders to do everything possible to save our people in Benghazi, right before he went to bed, is guilty of treason for violating a direct order from the CIC during wartime. I expect the the Tyrant was lying about his order because no one has been punished for this crime.

The ex-seals who saved nearly thirty consulate employes in the face of orders and odds of a over a hundred to one should receive the Congressional Medal of Honor.

The ‘charge of treason’ belongs directly on President Obama who is a racist bigot. Leftist will deny reality until their head is rolling on the floor and most support ISIS without even knowing what it means.
