Another Personal Attack Inspired By West

David Horowitz was one of the founders of the New Left in the 1960s and an editor of its largest magazine,Ramparts. He is the author, with Peter Collier, of three best selling dynastic biographies: The Rockefellers: An American Dynasty (1976); The Kennedys: An American Dream (1984); and The Fords: An American Epic (1987). Looking back in anger at their days in the New Left, he and Collier wrote Destructive Generation (1989), a chronicle of their second thoughts about the 60s that has been compared to Whittaker Chambers’ Witness and other classic works documenting a break from totalitarianism. Horowitz examined this subject more closely in Radical Son (1996), a memoir tracing his odyssey from “red-diaper baby” to conservative activist that George Gilder described as “the first great autobiography of his generation.”

yyI had decided three weeks ago, after responding to Diana West’s accusation that I am a book burner, that that would be the end of it. The storm she has created over a bad review of her book, American Betrayal, had reached a point where the controversy was no longer about the issues but purely personal and destructive. After five weeks of post after post attacking Radosh and me I hoped we had come to the end of it and if we just didn’t respond the furor would die down. I was wrong, the attacks have continued from her camp for another three weeks and the level of personal vitriol and slander directed at us has if anything reached new levels. Now, in the pages of Breitbart, even Vladimir Bukovsky, the great Soviet dissident, whose work we have previously admired in these pages, and will continue to admire, has joined her wolf-pack.

Vladimir Bukovsky is a formidable figure – the first to come to the support of West. I felt it necessary to respond to his attack in Breitbart. I hope this is the last time I will have to do this. My reply in Breitbart follows:

It grieves me to see a hero of the anti-Communist struggle, Vladimir Bukovsky, join the character assassins that Diana West has mobilized to attack Radosh and me because Frontpage posted a bad review of her book. It grieves me even more because he goes out of his way to defend her preposterous claims, e.g., that the division of Europe at Yalta was a Soviet plot when everyone knows the division was drawn by Winston Churchill, hardly a Soviet stooge. There are dozens if not hundreds of howlers like this in West’s 400-page, 900-footnote book, which is why we gave it a bad review.

West continually brings up her 900 footnotes as if that makes her book scholarly and factual. But footnotes do not protect an author from responsibility for the absurd conclusions she draws from them. Example: In writing about the proposed D-Day plan to invade France, which she opposes as a “Soviet plot” to give Eastern Europe to Stalin, West refers to the allied defeat of Hitler’s armies that would follow as an ethnic cleansing of anti-Bolsheviks. Here is the exact quote:

“Unopposed, unchecked, these Red Army troops would ride their Lend-Lease fleets of Jeeps and Dodges deep into a Europe that was being ethnically cleansed of millions of anti-Bolsheviks by U.S. and British troops.”

West’s invariable defense of ludicrous statements like this is that she never said them or they never meant what they meant. Bukovsky repeats this alibi, claiming that the Frontpage review by Radosh misrepresented her book. No it didn’t. Example: In her 22,000-word “rebuttal” to Radosh’s 8,000-word review West says it is “false” that she claimed that Washington DC was “occupied” by Communists and Stalin’s agents. Here is what she wrote in her book and actually quotes in her rebuttal:

“The vast and deep extent of Communist penetration, heretofore denied, had in fact reached a tipping point to become a de facto Communist occupation of the American center of power.”

Apparently she doesn’t realize that the Latin phrase de facto means “in fact.” It is impossible to argue with a mind as obtuse as this.

The fact that West’s book reports a lot of well-known facts about Communist infiltration and Soviet spies has led some people to believe that this makes her book worthwhile and important. If West had left it at that – as an accumulation of such already establish facts — I would agree. The problem is that she has a much greater ambition, which is to rewrite the history of World War II and the Cold War because everything written by historians before her are “fictions.” She therefore proceeds to weave these facts into preposterous and patently false theories (as in the two examples above) that will only serve to discredit them and the anti-Communist cause.

The worst aspect of West’s relentless personal attacks on Radosh and me are that they convert intellectual disagreements about a book and excessive complaints about a bad review into a political witch-hunt whose clear goal is to stigmatize us as communist apologists, inventing our histories in the process. One of West’s champions, Andrew Bostom writes:

“Bukovsky (b. 1942) spent almost a third of his first 33 years of life in Soviet prisons, labor camps, and psychiatric hospitals. Compare that experience to Ronald Radosh’s (b. 1937) and his colleague Frontpage Magazine owner David Horowitz’s (b. 1939) first 33 years of privileged existence in the U.S., and their perverse support, during that same period, for the liberty-crushing, Soviet Communist totalitarian system that imprisoned Bukovsky.”

I have spent 30 odd years fighting for the anti-Communist cause. Yes I was born into a Communist family. I wrote a book about it. I am not going to make apologies for my political views as a five-year-old. But both Radosh and I became New Leftists when Bukovsky was only 14, and never supported the Soviet totalitarian state or Bukovsky’s jailers. Nor do I “own” Frontpage, which is a non-profit entity that has no owners. This is the kind of garbage West and her followers have been flinging at us for the last two months.

If Bostom and crew follow West down the path of the political purge, treating intellectual critics of her work as enemies of liberty and supporters of Communism, it is West that set the standard and gave the marching orders. This zeal in demonizing intellectual opponents and attempting to expel them from the anti-Communist ranks is characteristic of her mentality, and what makes the accusations in her book untrustworthy and self-discrediting. It is why I removed an endorsement of it that appeared on Frontpage and published Radosh’s accurate critique, which despite 22,000 words of abuse she has still failed to answer.

One final note. In the kind of projection that is typical of demonizers, West has accused Radosh and me of attacks on her character. Her evidence? I called her “incompetent.” I did, but in a private email which she chose to publish in order to play the victim. I have written two previous posts about West – both in response to vicious attacks on me personally by her, as a “totalitarian,” an “anti-anti communist,” a “commissar” and a “book burner.” I had resolved not to engage this dispute again, but the personal attacks on Radosh and me have forced me to explain myself again. I hope this is the last time.

Pathetic, David. Just like your whole conduct from the beginning in this in which your slavish devotion to stroking Ron Radosh’s ego took precedence over all other things, to the point where you (1) suppressed a favorable review of West’s book (2) declared she should not have written her book (3) impugned the integrity of not just West but of all others who find value in what she has to say and the questions she raises even if we don’t automatically agree 100% with it and (4) dishonestly characterized what she wrote, whether it was on the matter of Harry Hopkins or how she characterized Churchill. Now you continue the suppression game by declaring that you would not run Bukovsky’s piece at this place. Thanks for flushing away 25 years of goodwill you once had with me on the subject of academic freedom because I wouldn’t trust anything you write ever again.

And my oh my, you say before Bukovsky no “formidable” figures defended West. What about Ann Coulter? What about M. Stanton Evans, the man whom your pal Radosh lied about in the past in his dishonest review of “Blacklislted By History?” It’s amazing how you choose to engage in a rewrite of the facts to push this hate-West agenda, even to the point where the matter of how you precipitated this with the suppression of the Tapson review and putting up a sewer-laden attack-dog piece that Vladimir Bukovsky rightly denounces, gets lost in the shuffle. Face facts, David, you got sold a bill of goods by Radosh and now you’re having to learn the true meaning of what “as you sow, so shall you reap” means.

For somebody who doesn’t trust anything written here, you sure spend a lot of time trolling the site. Maybe you can get on your knees and write some more lickable comments about Boris Badsky, or Vlad Jackoffsky, or whatever his name is. Chomo.

You acknowledge that the Allies invaded Europe on the west coast of France, and as we all know, they fought their way east until they met the Red Army at the Elbe (near Torgau). And they went no further.

At the same time, you assert that the “impotent” Soviets only “temporarily” occupied territory the Allied had already conquered. (see link)

  • Michael McCann

Why, then the visceral, personal attack on Diana West by Frontpage Mag? The
revelations of her powerful narrative seemed to have rocked the boat.
When I read David Horowitz’s initial editorial response, I honestly
wondered if he read the same book I read or if he had, indeed, read the
book at all. After attacking her competency, Horowitz writes, “West has
already shown herself to be a very angry, very self-centered and a very
reckless partisan, with a paranoid streak and a disposition to think in
extreme terms that have only a tenuous and deceptive relation to the
truth.” With effort, I can think of a few people who might fit this
description but the least likely is Diana West.

I categorically reject his statement, word for word, as having no
basis in truth. Such a statement cannot be surmised or even remotely
construed from her recent book or from any of her many articles with
which I am familiar. Where, how and why did Horowitz come up with this?
As regards to competency, her work speaks for itself. This is not the
problem. But when he says, “It’s not about our desire to suppress
West’s ideas…”, I would say, it is exactly about suppressing her ideas
and doing so immediately before they gain more traction. Moreover, the
venom and stridency of this unwarranted attack goes beyond all bounds of
decency. How does one characterize the attempt to destroy someone and
a reputation built over a lifetime? There is no instance in which this
O.K. A dispassionate collegial dispute among peers would have been of
benefit to all. What we observe is Horowitz’s authoritarianism
bordering on the sadistic with the obvious and singular goal to
humiliate, cause pain and destroy. This is as readily apparent as it is
    reprehensible.

It’s an old Communist trick to accuse your opponents of what you yourself are doing and then claim the status of victim. What Horowitz and Radosh don’t seem to be able to understand is that playing the part of a dissembling Communist Stooge doesn’t fool anyone anymore.

      • Inane Rambler

Yes, pushing for an honest interpretation of the facts makes you a Communist Stooge.

Inane Rambler: “Yes, pushing for an honest interpretation of the facts makes you a Communist Stooge.”

No, but ganging up and mugging someone who exposes the extent of Communist infiltration and influence in America and then claiming the status of victimhood when she fights back, does seem to bear all the indicia of a calculated Bolshevik and Stalinist attack. I don’t think that Horowitz and Radosh are Communist Stooges per se, but they are certainly acting that way in their treatment of Diana West and her book.

          • ziggy zoggy

          • Texas Patriot

TMJ: “David Horowitz DID expose the Commie infiltration. He was a Bolshevik.”

It would appear that the research and writing of Diana West reveal a far greater infiltration and influence of Communist ideology and thought patterns in America than David Horowitz and Ronald Radosh either knew about or were willing to talk about. Since much of her work is based on recently revealed documents obtained from the secret archives of the Russian KGB, it stands to reason that her findings would reveal much more than was originally available to Horrowitz or Radosh. Their vehement and vitriolic response, however, which seems to be much more personal and destructive in nature rather than scholarly or academic, is a clear indication that Diana West’s work has struck a very deep nerve of paranoia and vindictiveness in both men, which is as troublesome and perplexing as it is plain for all to see.

          • ziggy zoggy

Yes. Worst’s paranoid rantings claim a far greater infiltration of scary commies than Horowitz or Radosh have. That is because H and R are sane.

You are “ganging up” on Radosh and Horowitz for exercising their 1st amendment rights in criticising a book.

West fought back by making some truly Alinsky-like accusations that were ridiculous, hysterical, and foolish. Have you factored that into your selective moral outrage?

Why isn’t West acting like a communist stooge, or at least a stooge, by your measure? You aren’t making any sense.

          • Texas Patriot

For two reasons. First, because Diana West didn’t start the attacks, Radosh and Horowitz did. Second, Diana West’s response lacks the vitriolic and hateful ad hominem attacks that truly characterize the Bolshevik and Communist mode. Sorry you can’t see that.

          • ziggy zoggy

Uh, since when have women deserved more consideration than men? Besides being sexist and bigoted, that is an incredibly false and stupid opinion. Women have always been far more stupid, selfish and destructive than men.

Er,…Worst accused Horowitz and Radosh of being left-wing commies because they don’t believe her rabidly insane claim that America was controlled by the Soviets in WWII and refused to ally with the N@z!s because Stalin wanted that???? How can I begin to describe the bat$hit insane contradictions of Worst’s accusations?

And yeah. Worst absolutely and demonstrably did start the vitriolic, ad hominem attacks. In fact, she didn’t just start them……she finished them. There have been no attacks from FPM. Only rebuttals.

I am glad America didn’t ally itself with the N@z!s in WWII and I don’t believe Stalin was the “de facto” President of the U.S. you are a dishonest ret@rd to support those insane claims. You behave EXACTLY like a leftist. You must be so proud.

      • truebearing

“It’s an old Communist trick to accuse your opponents of what you yourself are doing…”

So, apparently you and all of the hysterical, reading comprehension challenged West supporters on this thread are communists then. Every one of you are ignoring what doesn’t suit your need to rant and are hurling one moronic attack after another, all the while posturing mightily about rational discourse and the horrors of personal attacks. Do you buffoons ever read what you’ve written before you post it?

        • Texas Patriot

TB: “So, apparently you and all of the hysterical, reading comprehension challenged West supporters on this thread are communists then.”

I seriously doubt that. I can’t speak for the others, but one of my first memories was watching Korean war footage on the television and then campaigning for Eisenhower in my neighborhood saying “I like Ike”. Later I campaigned for Barry Goldwater in 1964 as a fifteen year old. I believe that we should show no tolerance for ideological enemies of the United States whether they are within our borders or outside our borders, and if we have to use nuclear weapons to keep nuclear weapons from falling into the hands of our enemies, we should use them.

TB: “Every one of you are ignoring what doesn’t suit your need to rant and are hurling one moronic attack after another, all the while posturing mightily about rational discourse and the horrors of personal attacks.”

I don’t think I’m ignoring anything David Horowitz has said about Diana West. He claims that some of her conclusions are speculative and exaggerated, which may or may not be the case, but to my knowledge he hasn’t successfully impeached any of her research or her massive footnotes. And what I find impossible to ignore are his vicious personal and ad hominem attacks on a woman who is seeking to expose the true extent of totalitarian Communism and totalitarian Islam within our society today. Instead of attacking her, he should be encouraging her and supporting her if he is any kind of All-American Conservative.

TB: “Do you buffoons ever read what you’ve written before you post it?”

Here’s a heads up. If you want to pretend that David Horowitz and Ronald Radosh are not guilty of using ad hominem personal attacks against Diana West, you should probably try to restrain your own tendencies in that regard.

          • ziggy zoggy

Try to answer the questions you were asked. Stop avoiding them like Worst.

Pettifoggery is tedious. That is axiomatic but you are a troll so you have comprehension difficulties to begin with.

        • ziggy zoggy

Of course they don’t read their posts. That would require rational forethought and honesty.

    • truebearing

Why don’t you follow the prescription you propose for proper discourse? Read your own comment and witness the prolific hypocrisy of your own maundering attacks.

    • Bill

David, you and Ron should take Diana out for a drink and hug her! You’re all on the same side and thanking one another is going to help our conservatives team.

      • ziggy zoggy

That is an idiotic suggestion, predicated on an idiotic assumption. Diane Worst is obviously uninterested in comity and there is no unified conservative team – and there never has been.

  • rsilverm

David, We are not a wolf-pack. I personally have not even read West’s book. I don’t even care about her book. But West did not ignite this conflict. Radosh and you did. West did not make it personal, you guys did. Radosh attacked her book like it was personal. You backed him up. You guys have a blind spot on this that is weird. Had the critique on West’s book not sounded so nasty, personally nasty and vindictive, this blowup would not have occurred. And I still say that countering the positive review of the book with your own review would been superior to withdrawing the review you did not like. The whole thing stinks and West is not the one who made it that way. Of course you guys are dug in so deep now I suppose there’s no going back. I am still a fan of FrontPage. You guys do a lot of good things that I support. But I am disappointed by this particular episode.

I have wondered from the start, is there something personal at work here that none of us knows about? Like did they used to date or something? It’s just plain weird.

    • ziggy zoggy

Do you cut and paste all your whiny comments? Because they all look the same to me. How many ways are there to suck, anyway? You Worstrolls always write the same crap.

Maybe Hesperado could meet Dirty Sanchez and make a movie.

        • ziggy zoggy

And West’s N@z1 loving book is still ridiculous.

  • Texas Patriot

You can’t win this one, David. Everyone knows that the attack you and Radosh mercilessly leveled against Diana West, personally and professionally, was unprovoked. Now you are complaining that she is attacking you back. It doesn’t work that way. If you attempt to mug someone and destroy them personally and professionally, you cannot now claim that you are the victim.

Face the facts. You started the attacks, and you were totally unjustified in doing so. Be a man. Apologize. Admit that you lost your head and reverted to the Bolshevik and Stalinist tactics of your youth. Blame it on Radosh if you have to. But quit this ridiculous charade that Diana West is improperly attacking you. No one is buying it. She is defending herself, nothing more and nothing less, and she has a right to do that. For your part, you owe her an apology for starting this entire mess. So face the music. Bite the bullet. And tell her you’re sorry. It’s the right thing to do. If she’s the kind of American I think she is, she will graciously accept your apology and all will be forgiven.

Here’s a heads up. Americans are an understanding and forgiving people. We know that politics is a rough business and sometimes people get carried away and make mistakes in the heat of the moment. It happens to everybody, and now it’s happened to you. Don’t be so hard-headed that you miss this golden opportunity to apologize. It will be one of the best decisions you’ve ever made in your life.

    • ziggy zoggy

Six paragraphs? Seriously? You lost me at your screen name.

      • Texas Patriot

Ziggy, wake up. We’re at a pivotal moment in the history of Western Civilization. The forces of Totalitarian Islam are on the march and they are gobbling up Jews, Christians, and other non-Muslims like popcorn at the Bijou. Diana West is not the enemy. Totalitarian Islam is the enemy, and they are using the same tricks that Totalitarian Communism used in the past to infiltrate and influence Western Governments. Exposing our blindness to the former influence of Totalitarian Communism will go a long way toward exposing our current blindness to the influence of Totalitarian Islam. Guys like Horowitz and Radosh need to wake up and get with the program. Instead of attacking Diana West and her work, they need to be praising it and encouraging it. If her work needs correction and refining in any way, that is a legitimate role for Horowitz and Radosh to play. Attempting to discredit and silence Diana West and the truth she has brought into the national debate can only help our enemies.

        • ziggy zoggy

A non-entity like Worst has us poised at a pivotal point in the history of civilization?

          Thanks for the comedy relief.

          • Texas Patriot

Apparently Horowitz and Radosh can’t see it either. But it’s really not funny at all.

          • ziggy zoggy

Your rabid defense of her insanity is………well, it’s just sad.

          • Texas Patriot

The only thing I’m defending here is the right of the American people to know the truth about Communist infiltration and influence in the United States. Naturally whenever a former Communist and a former Leftist seek to silence and suppress that truth through a campaign of lies, personal attacks, and deliberate distortions, I am opposed to it.

          • ziggy zoggy

Oh, no! Horowitz is a commie fiend who is trying to silence the noble efforts of Diane Worst and some crappy book that nobody will ever read!

Silly Soggy, you make yourself more irrelevant and laughable with every word you spew. Your observations are stunningly sophomoric and wholly without value. Do you really expect anyone (except other flying monkeys) to take you seriously? I doubt if you actually read Diana West’s book, in full or in part, and if you did it was clearly over your pointed head. Do yourself and everyone else a favor and leave the commenting to people who have something worthwhile to say.

          • ziggy zoggy

          • truebearing

Criticizing a book and not publishing a review is not remotely close to suppressing or silencing anything. That is ridiculous.

You keep bringing up things like “deliberate distortions.” Prove it or shut up about it. To continue to make unproven allegations is a demonization tactic of the Left.

          • Texas Patriot

TB: “You keep bringing up things like “deliberate distortions.” Prove it or shut up about it. To continue to make unproven allegations is a demonization tactic of the Left.”

As has been pointed out previously on several occasions in this debate, Messrs. Hororwitz and Radosh have employed tactic of setting up “straw men” of things that Diana West didn’t say and then attacking the straw men as if she did. As I understand it, they said that Diana West called Eisenhower a communist, Churchill a stooge, and claimed that the Soviet Union was running the government in Washington, D.C. Diana West denies saying all of those things. Otherwise their ad hominem personal attacks are legion, and I won’t repeat them here. Sorry you can’t see any of this TB.

          • truebearing

How do you explain the quotes from her book, supplied in Horowitz’s post? What about her claims that Yalta was a Soviet plot? What about her assertion that: ““The vast and deep extent of Communist penetration, heretofore denied, had in fact reached a tipping point to become a de factoCommunist occupation of the American center of power.”

Don’t give me any more of your nonsensical dogmatism. Refute the criticism of West with something from her book that proves Horowitz or Radosh wrong, not another one of your pointless and meaningless one-note screeds. Your opinion doesn’t count as fact, and I’m strongly of the opinion that you don’t have the foggiest idea of how to critically anaylize text.

          • ziggy zoggy

For reasons no rational person could ever fathom, the people who fund Frontpage must enjoy having their reputations dragged through the mud.

  • PAUL WESTON

Dear David, I am a regular reader and great admirer of frontpagemag and will continue to read you daily, despite this sorry and shameful episode.

But, and this is a big but, you are way out of line here. This is not about a scholarly debate as to the factual representation of history as outlined by Diana West, it is about your core decency and morality as an honourable man, all of which I am afraid to say appear to have deserted you on this issue.

The correct response, if you felt Diana’s book contained inaccuracies, would have been to politely agree with the bulk of it, and to tactfully point out that you questioned some issues she had raised.

But you did not do this. Instead you went into full out attack mode. You have behaved in an arrogant, authoritarian and thoroughly unpleasant manner. Diana is a woman and deserves to be treated with at least some vestige of chivalry, so your use of just her surname is a dishonourable insult, no doubt just as you intended.

Your use of words has been simply awful. “Reckless, attack dogs, etc etc etc” which thoroughly demean you and expose you as a man driven by petty hatreds and vindictiveness and which no doubt stem from your leftist past, which no man can simply pass off as the foolishness of youth. The basic truth here is that the support of Communism and the evils inherent in it would be an impossibility for all truly decent men, no matter their age. Your recent choice of words and actions seem to be straight out of Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals, isolate the target and then….. behave just as immoral and unpleasant leftists have always behaved.

It is high time you accepted you made a terrible mistake here. Not about accuracy or inaccuracy, but about your truly awful and unpleasant behaviour. Diana West deserves better from you. Frontpagemag deserves better from you. The Conservative movement deserves better from you and I, as an admirer of yours, deserve better from you.

I do hope, sincerely hope, that you take these words on board, do the right thing, and put this matter to rest in an honourable, decent and moral manner.

    • ziggy zoggy

Sorry to be the one who breaks reality to you, but skanks don’t have a monopoly on facts and a hot chick commands more attention than a STUPID UGLY ONE.

          • cathnealon

Well, you started it!-sure stupid, ugly women can be nutty–so can attractive ones-it’s just that with the hotter gals most men are willing to cut them a little slack, because, hey, why not?

I have nothing against ugly chicks but when they combine their ugly mugs with ugly personalities they need to just STFU and leave the room. Every female talking head in the Establishment Media fits that description. I mean, seriously. C’mon. It’s reasonable to suppose, after reviewing all the evidence of this brouhaha to date and the growing mountain of distortions and disinformation churned out by Radosh and Horowitz about West, that your pleas to Horowitz to comport himself with decency in this matter is about as realistic as expecting a Moderate Muslim to be intellectually honest about Mohammed, the Koran and the Sunna.

I just commented in defence of your argument but failed to post as a reply and thus realised that just like Descartes tree you’d never hear it. Hence this.

Some of the replies to your reasoned argument defy even the fact that the writers are educated humans but paradoxically that’s humanity, I guess.

This whole squalid affair, instigated by Mr Horowitz, is getting steadily worse unfortunately. The vile and obscene creature by the name of Ziggy Zoggy is dragging FPM further into the gutter with his vicious Epsilon Semi-Moron defence of Horowitz, which both perversely and inexplicably appears to be acceptable
        to the moderators here.

What is happening right now is simply extraordinary. One man (Horowitz) is digging in his heels against his own moral,
decent and intelligent readership, his own board members (who are, I am reliably informed, extremely unhappy about this sordid and undignified descent into the moral sewer) and presumably even Jamie Glazov as well, whose personal family background must lead him to question the wisdom/morality of throwing a man of Bukovsky’s stature under the bus.

What a dreadful balls-up this is. The phrase “undone by one’s own hubris” springs to mind, and it is way overdue for Horowitz to do the right thing, assuming his overbearing and pathological arrogance allows it……

If it were not for Daniel Greenfield’s outstanding contribution to this site, I rather doubt I would read FPM again. Horowitz’s behaviour really is that bad. Extraordinary, simply extraordinary and baffling.

“The problem is that she has a much greater ambition,
which is to rewrite the history of World War II and the Cold War because
everything written by historians before her are ‘fictions.’” No, Mr. Horowitz,
she performed yeoman’s work in uncovering the unknown and suppressed history of
especially WWII, the history I never learned in grade or high school, nor could
find in any textbooks I used in my academic career. West was not
“rewriting” history – she is no friend of Big Brother or of any of
his modern, academic cousins – but discovering it for the first time, as a
consequence of wondering why our government and our intellectual establishment pay
Islam so much slack. She exposed the precedent, which was FDR’s treasonous policies
and behavior before and during WWII. She has helped to expose and explode the parallax
history most Americans have been raised on, a view propounded by leftists and
Neocons alike. She has removed the distorting lens through which Americans have
learned their history, and she was not the first to question that history. Mr.
Horowitz, a Neocon, boasts of being “anti-Communist.” But, what is he
    for. Capitalism? Individualism? Freedom
of speech? Given his and “Professor” Radosh’s behavior and stealthy
character-assassination of Diana West, I don’t think he is for anything but the
preservation of the status quo. Which is a mess, thanks to the liberal/left and
    Neoconservativism.

Finally, West’s lengthy rebuttal to Radosh and Mr.
Horowitz’s allegations required her to practically write another book in an
attempt to refute every one of those allegations. Why should she let them
stand? Why shouldn’t she take the attacks on her personally? You can’t expect
to impugn someone’s intellectual honesty without expecting some heat. You know
what they say about a woman scorned, and Horowitz and Radosh scorned a woman
with impeccable intellectual and moral credentials. Deal with it.

  • RCraigen

I’m a little reluctant to pile on here because it seems the majority of the readership already sees through Mr. Horowitz’ stubborn entrenchment here. But I feel that I must chime in because some of his comments have been directed toward me (not me personally, but at those who, like me, have come to Ms. West’s defence in this affair, here and elsewhere, and among whom I have been one of the more vociferous). I’ll restrict my comments to this one issue.

Specifically, Mr. Horowitz insists that the strong response he has received to the FPM actions in this matter are all due to some campaign personally directed by, or otherwise directly attributable to, actions of Diana West — the weakest version of this charge coming in his title via the word “inspired”. In this piece alone, the following phrases reinforce much stronger versions of his contention:

    “The storm she has created”;

    “the attacks have continued from her camp … of personal vitriol and slander directed at us”;

    “joined her wolf-pack”;

    “join the character assassins that Diana West has mobilized”;

    “a political witch-hunt”;

    “garbage West and her followers have been flinging at us”;

“Bostom and crew follow West down the path of the political purge”

… and more of the same in the other pieces he has written.

Apparently Mr. Horowitz cannot conceive of the possibility that independent-thinking conservatives might stumble across this dispute, size up the situation on their own and, without direction, command, bribe, threat or request from Ms. West, decide on the basis of principle alone to speak on her behalf.

Perhaps Ms. West has gathered a huge cadre of thugs and bullies into a wolf-pack to attack David and Ron. Perhaps. But I see not a whit of evidence of anything remotely like this (beyond publishing their pieces as they come to or are pointed out to her). Nothing David has said here or in any of his other pieces lends credence to this preposterous accusation. Ms. West shows no predisposition to inflict harm upon the conservative or anti-communist movement. She shows every sign of astonishment that her book has opened such a schism, and a little bit of horror at what has been wrought through Mr. Radosh’s review.

If there is evidence of such, please produce it. I cannot speak for other men and women in this camp, but I can speak for myself and the reasons I have weighed in.

First, let me say that I am not one of “Diana West’s followers” — or rather, I was not until the Radosh review caused me to pay attention to her writings. I may have read some of her syndicated columns but none come to mind, and I barely knew her name. I read, anyway, widely among conservative writers; she was at best one of that crowd to me. I had not read any of her books; I had never corresponded with her. I was, however, an avid reader of David Horowitz’ articles and could have been counted as an admirer of his.

I still have not read her book (I plan to — and I am in the midst of arranging to give several copies to others to read). But I was hooked on the subject from the start, and have since read everything you folks here, Diana, Gates of Vienna, Andrew Bostom and the Breitbart folks have published on the matter and things stand pretty clearly to me not only in terms of how well statements are documented and the tone, tactics and nature of debate as each participant takes part. And it is no contest where my sympathy has fallen; I needn’t get into that here, but it has left me saddened and disappointed.

I am no historian. Heck, I’m not even an American, though I lived and taught university in the U.S. for several years. I am a Canadian academic — a Professor of Mathematics; this subject matter is far from my domain of expertise. Yet as an academic well into my own research career I immediately recognize what constitutes, and does not constitute, valid scholarship (whether by professionals or by amateurs, and I understand the difference between the two — the former often being of higher calibre than the latter), and I recoil at appeals to authority or academic dogma, two cancers all too prevalent in the Academy today. It is through this filter, and using what I consider to be a brain still capable of rational analysis of argument, evidence and behaviour, that I have pondered and assessed this field of battle.

One final thing I wish to say. While nobody has produced a shred of evidence that Diana West has personally laboured to raise an army of attack-dogs against fellow conservatives, it is not only obvious that Ron Radosh has done so, but that he speaks plainly about what is surely open collaboration, if not outright helmsmanship, of the sort West is being accused of, here:
    http://frontpagemag.com/2013/ron-radosh/diana-wests-attempt-to-respond/
“Later next week, Harvey Klehr and John Earl Haynes will deal with her fourth source for the claim, a KGB agent named Iskhak Akhermov, as well as other aspects of her book.” Does Dave believe that Ron had no hand in these other scholars’ decisions to weigh in, yet confidently lays out a timetable for the release of their contributions? And when their piece appeared, on schedule, a week later:
    http://frontpagemag.com/2013/john-earl-haynes-and-harvey-klehr/was-harry-hopkins-a-soviet-spy/#disqus_thread
it was even harder to see how they might have been independently motivated to write what they did, considering that it is abundantly clear that they had not read her book and were addressing all their criticism thereof toward the version of it found in Radosh’s third party characterizations.

West is a villain for marshalling others to march into this debate (even though there is no evidence she has done so) — while Radosh is a hero despite clearly, and openly doing just that?

Bit of a double standard, David.

    • ziggy zoggy

“I still have not read her book (I plan to — and I am in the midst of arranging to give several copies to others to read).”

What a rigorous system for choosing books to give away. I’ll bet you have a fascinating, albeit imaginary, personal library. Why not read the book before you recommend it?

You assert that: “Mr. Horowitz cannot conceive of the possibility that independent-thinking conservatives might stumble across this dispute, size up the situation on their own and, without direction, command, bribe, threat or request from Ms. West, decide on the basis of principle alone to speak on her behalf.”

How does it follow that like-minded historians couldn’t find agreement on a topic they are equally well informed on and seek to address it without being recruited? It seems you are condemning Horowitz and Radosh for suggesting West incited a coordinated attack, while you are hypocritically doing the same thing….with no actual “evidence.” Your air-tight case is more of a non sequitur conspiracy theory. Maybe Klehr and Haynes contacted Radosh first.

You say you’re are a mathmetician?

      • RCraigen

Hi TB. Thanks for your interest in my selection criterion. It is a most curious episode for me, and I’m happy to explain further.

First, I found Diana’s articles at Breitbart most interesting and eye-opening. At this point I took them with the usual jaundiced view … “Hmmm, worth a look, maybe I’ll check out the book myself”. Then I saw the Radosh review (the opening salvo in this ongoing mess) and its internal “flavour” along with the inconsistency of its reporting the details of her book versus her own plain statements of thesis indicated something was amiss.

Then Horowitz’ over-the-top slamming of it, followed by Radosh’s follow-up ad-hominem-filled victory dance and his promise that other scholars, by name, would soon be chiming in, made it clear that this was no mere scholarly response that got a little overly spicy, but an orchestrated attack. Then came the “promised” hit pieces and more vicious writing by the principal pups in the dogpile.

Getting very curious I looked about only to find that Radosh has a history of soiling himself repeatedly in precisely this kind of friendly-fire incident.

He piled on in an almost identical attack on Michelle Malkin’s book “In Defense of Internment”, questioning some of her historical assertions about Roosevelt in WWII. It was not, in this case, his own attack and he apparently found it easier to extract himself from the mess as the ship began to go down, seeing that it was someone else’s attack and that Malkin, like West, had detailed and compelling answers to the criticisms raised. Read about it here:

        http://michellemalkin.com/2004/09/08/the-end-of-a-reasoned-debate-2/

Apparently it’s a bit harder to eat crow when it’s your own crow.

In 2007 he took it upon himself to initiate another attack of the same type on M. Stanton Evans for his book “Blacklisted by History”. Ann Coulter fairly dismembered poor Radosh over that one:
        http://www.anncoulter.com/columns/2007-12-05.html

Seems Radosh has a solid record of picking very good conservative books about history to attempt to trash. It’s some sort of high recommendation. But not enough, in itself, to make me want to go out and buy Diana’s book. And it would be a tad less embarrassing if he picked places a bit less prominent than National Review, Front Page Magazine and History News Network to expose himself in this manner … but I digress.

The severity of the coordinated attacks and the equal vociferousness of the apparently independent rallies in support of West indicated to me that an issue of great importance to the conservative community is at stake. Indeed, West’s conclusions are quite startling and gamechanging, though the direction from which she’s taking fire is initially surprising.

My present position comes from simply weighing the tone and surface merits of the offerings of the two sides against each other — point and counterpoint, line by line. It’s no contest; West has acquitted herself well, and proven herself worth hearing out. In fact, I have never so thoroughly checked out the pros and cons of investing in a volume outside my own field of expertise as in this case.

So I’m purchasing multiple copies of her book and, besides reading it myself, giving it to people whose judgement I trust and whose interest in and knowledge of this subject exceeds my own. I expect some interesting conversations. And, unlike the pieces I’m seeing here, more light than heat on the merits of West’s theses therein.

As for “evidence” that Radosh has coordinated the attack: read the link I gave in that comment. He essentially SAY AS MUCH HIMSELF. If that is not enough, read the promised articles. They are not based on the book, but on Radosh’s critique. They have not read the book they purport to critricize — it all comes back to Radosh as a source. That, my friend, is evidence.

Verbosity happens to be a dubious gift of mine. And, for your information, that correlates with being a mathematician. We love to talk, and write, some of us to a fault.

        • Hesperado

Don’t forget Diana West’s three-part Rebuttal of Radosh’s review. She demonstrates there, in meticulous detail, that Radosh was repeatedly distorting and mischaracterizing her book, sometimes on a level so blatant involving non-existent words he claimed were there, that she had to call it surreal — and she demonstrated with evidence, that characterization. There are only two explanations for why Radosh and Horowitz have been deliberately distorting West’s book and her subsequent defenses in order to generate disinformation and obfuscation: 1) Either Radosh and Horowitz recently incurred physical brain injury; or 2) they are stealth Communists in deep cover pretending to be anti-Communist. I think we can safely rule out #1.

          • ziggy zoggy

The Soviets didn’t occupy Washington D.C. It was a “de facto” occupation. Roosevelt and Churchill weren’t Soviet stooges. They just bent over for everything Stalin demanded and promoted his agenda. Hopkins wasn’t a “Soviet” agent. He was some anonymous agent.

  • Hermes

David and Don have done a good job of criticizing this crazy book. Such strong attacks are commonplace in any academic setting or in newspapers, and Ms West deserves them. Her reaction is very immature. The people writing here are probably friends of West and do not count. Being a conservative does not mean that one should accept any weird thesis just because it is against the mainstream. Left wing revisionist historians have also produced some ridiculous historical narratives that went against logic and facts. Should we take them seriously just for that?

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Eric-Paddon/100001252965548 Eric Paddon

Ah yes, David, there it is. “. . . de facto Communist occupation of the American center of power.” It’s a wonder that we ever won the Cold War (or did we . . .? Cue dramatic music!!!) Again, Ms. West and followers should be thanking Horowitz and Radosh for giving this book more attention than it deserves. Having spent their adult lives railing against political correctness, leftism, and communist sympathizers in the academy, etc., H&R are now doubt rightfully regretting having to squander precious electrons stating over and over the obvious: historians have a responsibility to use a “common sense” filter before alleging whole-swath conspiracies. One gets the sense from West and her kidney that, during the cataclysm of WWII that there were easy decisions to make. For example, assume that the full details and culpability for the Katyn massacre were known at the time among Allied leaders when realizing the Soviet Union would provide a bulwark against Nazi (and Japanese) expansion. This would make it all the more clear that Churchill–knowing full well it was a dance with the devil–was a serious leader who understood what was at stake. Still not convinced? Fair enough. Now, add up the Allied dead and wounded, then compare it to Soviet casualties, including civilians. “nuff said.

  • Dr. John

“a Europe that was being ethnically cleansed of millions of anti-Bolsheviks by U.S. and British troops.”

Imagine if this preposterous claim was made by a liberal–or, for that matter, by Barack Obama. Conservatives–every last one–would be howling in rage over this calumny against U.S. troops. So now, thanks to Ms. West, I know what my father (and your father, or you yourself) was doing over there–not fighting Nazi Germany but ethnically cleansing people. Thanks for the enlightenment, Ms. West.

It’s strange to see the great majority of conservatives–at least in the talkback forums–lining up behind West, and the reason seems to be that she makes bitter, highly emotional accusations, and ’tis the season of a breakdown of norms of debate and intellectual standards into a bitterly, wildly emotional, accusatory style. Or is it that historians of the period–not just Ron Radosh, but also Harvey Klehr, Jeffrey Herf, and Conrad Black, who have revealed the grave, counterfactual flaws and delusionary claims in West’s book, all somehow (even though they don’t form any sort of coherent ideological or personal group and are hardly lieutenants of David Horowitz) have a personal animus against West and are just slinging mud at her for some reason?

As for the “suppression” of Tapson’s review, which conservatives keep howling over as if it signals a descent into totalitarianism, a publication has a right to change its mind about something it has posted and remove it. Tapson by his own admission was not knowledgeable in the subject areas covered by West’s book. Tapson’s review was hardly “suppressed” because you can find it on another conservative site in an instant. As for Tapson, he has continued as a columnist for Frontpage. Yet conservatives rage about the removal of his review from Frontpage as if it was the greatest blow to liberty that has ever been dealt by cruel totalitarians. What a circus and what a sad display.

You chose to express indignation over Highlander’s posts as an assault on the “free speech” of Ziggy, which by default means you endorsed Ziggy’s comments as somehow being legitimate expressions of opinion when they defy all standards of common decency. And I’m noticing now how a partial scrubbing is taking place here but one that is alas far short of what it should be if Horowitz wishes to prove he still has integrity (which would also mean openly repudiating Ziggy in actual WORDS with the same fervor with which he is willing to smear Diana West).

Now if you want to prove me wrong, let’s see if you’re man enough to repudiate Ziggy. Until then, your comments can be easily dismissed for having no real substantive value.

Why is Worst’s book in the bargain bin?

          • Highlander

The point is that Mr. Horowitz lectures others about observing proper academic standards. Yet he has decided that pornographic comments that have absolutely no merit whatsoever are permissible on his own website. In fact he even thanks the person who regularly makes those pornographic comments for defending him.

            Horowitz is a joke.

What if Bukovsky had a stroke and was permanently impaired? Would you still let him tell you what to read?

Don’t misunderstand. I’m not criticizing Mr. Bukovsky. I just have a thing about groupthink of any kind.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Eric-Paddon/100001252965548 Eric Paddon

Yes, you are criticizing Bukovsky. He wrote an intelligent piece that Horowitz decided to ignore by impugning his integrity, regardless of how he chooses to spin it. David believes we should all be of one mind on Diana West’s book and that means if we don’t get down on bended knee and swear fealty to Ron Radosh, then you will be smeared considered an embarrassment to anti-Communism and Cold War studies. And that is an attitude that only a totalitarian could love.

        • truebearing

No, I didn’t criticize Bukovsky, but I’m noticing a distinct pattern with your predictable inanility to read simple English and comprehend what you read. No wonder you’re still babbling about West and the wrongs done her by giving her book an unfavorable review…..the horror!

Maybe you should explain how asking jewishOdyseus a hypothetical question is criticism of Bulovsky. I’m dying to see what kind of paralogic you dredge up next. Your comments are bordering on incoherent.

        • ziggy zoggy

Worst wrote a bad book and Horowitz called her on it.

You are completely incapable of admitting that. Why do you think I’m able to humiliate you Westrolls so easily? Because I’m smart? No. Because you sycophants are wrong and Horowitz is right.

And because I’m the most magnificent specimen of manhood to ever walk the Earth with a swinging d!€k. =P

  • wbonesteel

Heh. David, Bukosvky’s take down was a thing of beauty.

I stopped trusting anything Radosh had to say when he used empty sophistry to try to convince us it was worth starting WWIII ‘Because, Israel!’ (I’ve had my doubts about his opinions and works for quite some time.)
Now, you’ve just joined him on that list. You can’t be trusted, David. Period. Dot. End of discussion.

“Unopposed, unchecked, these Red Army troops would ride their Lend-Lease
fleets of Jeeps and Dodges deep into a Europe that was being ethnically
cleansed of millions of anti-Bolsheviks by U.S. and British troops.”

If any liberal, let alone Barack Obama, had made this scurrilous, defamatory statement against the U.S. troops who fought Nazi Germany, ALL U.S. conservatives would react with rage. Now, though, at least in the talkbacks threads, they’re almost all behind West, perhaps because she makes unhinged accusations and ’tis the season for unhinged accusations–against American servicemen, whatever, anything will do–instead of reasoned discourse.

  • Lawrence

I had initially been defensive of West, thinking that FrontPage should never have withdrawn the initial favourable review, just responded with a critical review and left it at that. However now I am coming more to Horowitz’s side even though I think it could have been handled better initially. Most everybody comes to West’s defense which shows how little conservatives here care for basic history 101, just like liberals with an axe to grind. Or they have not come to grips with West’s actual thesis, what she actually says in her book. The howlers that Horowitz quotes from West above are not minor or trivial (everybody makes mistakes), but delusional nonsense that no serious historian of WW2 takes seriously. Initially I had no idea that West was that delusional or that such nonsense was in her book when I first defended her (I’m not talking about Hopkins here, will leave it to the historians to argue about), and all her defenders ignore and will continue to ignore what Horowitz quotes in this regard; and just shoot the messenger, Horowitz (and others) instead. And just because somebody is a dissident of the old USSR does not make them historians. One of the only people of any credibility who has come to West’s defense is Andrew Bostom, and he has blundered in so doing. And blundered badly.

Somebody above says Coulter is a credible defender of West! Coulter has as much credibility as Limbaugh or Michael Moore or Barack Obama. Then again all this knee-jerk defense of West is not surprising (by people who continue to ignore the passages quoted by Horowitz from West’s book in this very article), this is the face of much American conservatism Horowitz. Best to acknowledge it. The ugliness and dishonesty of the American Right has never gone away, its absurd reactionary tendencies, its red under every bad paranoia, the kind of mentality that was responsible for McCarthy’s witch-hunting in the first place. And McCarthy is increasingly being seen as a hard done by hero to the American Right. It’s chilling. And I am no more a liberal than Horowitz is, never mind a communist. But naturally I will now be painted as a useful dupe of the communist conspiracy, just like Horowitz and Radosh (and I often disagree heatedly with Radosh on a lot of things).

    • reezon

I cannot believe that Americans have no one that is smarter this government whom we have in control who is oppressing and attacking their own people just like pre WWII. So many online papers continue to have information on what is coming, what is being done to us and how it has happened but not one newspaper has anything about what can be done to help Americans get back to where they used to be. I watch the Crescendo of Control build . Many conservative writers have become so famous with those of us clinging to their every word who can see our lives changing before our very eyes. None of them have any real solutions to offer us other than hunker down and read about what they are going do to you next. I am shocked that our so called conservatives have not gone to every extreme to expose a much better healthcare proposal that is presented on a simple one page advertisement that should be on every billboard in America–that alone just astounds me as to how hard they are working at solutions. Playing attack/defend as journalism is getting old and tiring. Playing , “This is what they are doing to you now and there is nothing you can do about it”, is getting old and tiring .
The people in this government are acting like vicious little teenagers on drugs that have their hands on all the parent’s money and protection in their family home and the parents just keep arguing with them trying to get them to make sense- getting no where but worse.
Conservatives have no media. Face it. You people have been given so much money by your followers and you could have CREATED a whole new way of communicating other than the internet (which can be controlled also and will be soon) If you are true Americans, you are creators. At least take some of these monies that are given to you to represent us and start building . Learn how to talk to dysfunctional people who are controllers! Good God, we have negotiated our people’s release who have been being held by oppressors for years . Conservative leaders and journalists need to” think out of the box”, Evolve Journalists! You are projecting fear and we are reacting to Fear. We just keep following behind these messes trying to pick up the pieces in hysteria. Stop, it’s not working. AMERICANS ALL FORGOT how to help each other RESPONSIBLY—Dems and Reps. That’s how this invisible wall has been created with two different sides that cannot hear each other. One side believes that everyone should just put their money together in gov. to trust them to help others ,the other side portrays that we should believe in individuals who are successful to help each other . NO BODY KNOWs HOW TO HELP EACH OTHER ANY MORE-NONE OF THEM. People are just getting more and more selfish. ENABLING-STUDY IT! FIND OUT HOW HISTORICALLY IT LEADS TO DESTRUCTION in governments and in family . Enabling is the quiet soft SCREAM. By playing attack/defend these journalists are ENABLING. By Playing Control/Or be Controlled- you are playing their game. Focus on a person’s hopes and dreams–SHOW REAL SOLUTIONS THAT ARE OUT OF THIS ATTACK/ DEFEND BOX. talk to the world bankers and tell them you are creating your own new financial system. Get busy creating and showing the world who we truly are as people . The Dems I talk to are terrified of loosing their gov. money, they have no plan. It is now becoming a drug, gov.dependence. Our leaders are dependent on this gov. dependence drug to the point of doing everyone else in. When this government’s movie has played itself all of the way out and doesn’t work, we will have to fix it anyway. Get out in front of them and start fixing it. Learn how to deal with the dependent personalities. People do know how and are doing it every day.

Judao Christian principals are the necessary saving grace. They SHOULD be going hand in hand with freedom, free markets, entrepreneurship, self-determination, upward mobility. When barns burned in the heartland, all the neighbors pitched in to rebuild it. Now, in 2013, we’ve got internet typing instead. Not a good substitute. I tweeted your piece. well done.

        YOU WESTROLLS ARE FUCKING INSANE.

Worst’s conclusions about WWII are insane. Anybody who defends those conclusions is likewise demented.

And who the F is Andrew Bostom supposed to be? Never heard of her.

      • Nick

Your conclusions about WWII are divorced from reality. When did Patton cross the Elbe and liberate Poland again – in your fantasy world?

    • Hesperado

Frankly, after all the distortion and disinformation purveyed by Radosh and Horowitz about West, I cannot trust any of Horowitz’s quotes until I see them with my own eyes in West’s book. And I sure as hell don’t trust his inferences he draws from them.

Secondly, anyone who recoils from McCarthy as though he had toxic cooties needs to 1) read M. Stanton Evans’ book on McCarthy, and 2) write a reasoned critique of its thesis and evidence, before I begin to entertain the merit of their McCarthyphobia.

  • Dobermite

I read Bukovsky’s column and it was devastating for academics in general and Radosh in particular, especially when you consider that Vladimir Bukovsky is in many ways the spiritual and intellectual heir to Alexander Solzhenitsyn. When a man of Bukovsky’s stature on the anti-communist right comes to your defense and eviscerates your detractors, its ‘Game Over’ … Game, Set & Match.

    • Lawrence

The argument from sacred cow status is not a valid one. Bukovsky has not got to grips with West’s howlers in her book, any more than you do and others here defending her.

Nobody’s opinions are beyond reproach or question or criticism, not Bukovsky’s or anybody else’s. Not in politics, academia, nor science for that matter.

      • Dr. John

“Unopposed, unchecked, these Red Army troops would ride their Lend-Lease
fleets of Jeeps and Dodges deep into a Europe that was being ethnically
cleansed of millions of anti-Bolsheviks by U.S. and British troops.”

What great wisdom from West. Silly me, I thought my father, who was one of those U.S. soldiers, was over there to fight Nazi Germany. Now, enlightened by Diana West, I know he was over there for the ethnic cleansing of millions.

What if a liberal, let alone Barack Obama, had stated or written the appalling sentence from West’s book quoted above? All the conservatives would be screaming to high heaven at this defamation of American servicemen. But Diana West, the new conservative hero, said it so it must be OK. Sad, something’s gone wrong with the conservative camp, which I thought was the last redoubt of sanity, now doesn’t look much better than its opponents.

      • monostor

Your argument is a non-argument. No one except West and Bukovski’s critics talks about sacred cows and those opinions. West and Bukovski talk and write facts and that is the no-go area of modern relative morality of the “experts” for whom the research of history stopes before the latter’s consequences are exposed.

        • ziggy zoggy

Your argument is a non argument because it is obviously insane.

The conclusion to Worst’s book is hilariously insane. How does it feel to support that? (Not that you or anybody else has read one of the three copies of her book.) are you covered in peanut butter and dancing around in your grandma’s panties right now?

          Nut bucket.

          • monostor

I have very bad news for you. I have not only read Diana’s book but others too written by Bukovski and Stanton Evans. I am not even mentioning that I have first hand life experience re communism and its modus operandi.

The people funding David Horowitz must be so pleased to see you commenting regularly at Frontpage. Your presence here does them credit.

      • TienBing

The only sacred cow bawling is the Rodash/Horowitz bovine. That is the whole point.

Evens, West – and now Bukovsky in support of West, all present facts heretofore ignored or glossed over, and come up with an interpretation that differs from the establishment doctrinaire interpretation of historical facts. Apparently Rodash/Horowitz support that interpretation and have reacted vehemently.

        • ziggy zoggy

Apparently you are insane. Your multiple personalities and whackado comments confirm it.

    • ziggy zoggy

“It’s game over…..game set and match.”

With contradictory and just plain BAD writing like that, you could be the next Dianne Worst: A nut bag nobody who published a crazy book that went straight to the “return to publisher” bin.

  • justquitnow

I’m sorry David, but this is what you get. You and Frontpage have been promoting basically the same ideas but West went all crazy and tabloid with it and just rewrote the 20th century to fit the way that fringe conservatives want to think about it. You’ve been doing the same thing with Discover the Network and your philosophical insistence that you are still fighting the same enemies as you always have been and that’s communists. You love it so much, you’ve done everything you can to morph all current names of non-conservatives to just mean communist. So you should have just gotten on the bandwagon with West and the Cato institute, because now you’re getting a taste of the business end of the sword you have long been wielding. Sure it’s crazy, but if they just insist hard enough, they can teach the “real” history and confuse a whole new generation.

When you create a bizarro world of false and sensationalized history then you are starting a cult and as you know all too well David, if you’re not of the cult then you are the “other”….freaking commie. :)

“Unopposed, unchecked, these Red Army troops would ride their Lend-Lease fleets of Jeeps and Dodges deep into a Europe that was being ethnically cleansed of millions of anti-Bolsheviks by U.S. and British troops…”

There were those (including Pope Pius XII, historians believe) who were sympathetic to Germany because Naz ism opposed or fought Bolshevism.

    • SCREW SOCIALISM

Which form of cancer is better?

Which for of socialism is better?

The National Socialism of the nazis or the Soviet Socialism of the communists?

Obviously they are both dangerous and should be fought.

      • wildjew

You are right. They both should be fought. Barack Hussein Obama is a manifestation of the evils of Marxism and he must be fought. Sadly, Communism has its seductive capacity for millions of peoples around the world who want the government to dictate virtually every aspect of their lives in return for “security.” Obama promises this seductive snake oil.

Speaking as a Jew, National Socialism was the greater evil. That is the way Americans and our leaders saw it at the time and I think it was the correct assessment. Don’t you? Communism is a political-economic ideology. Nazism was predominantly a racial supremacist ideology. Jews were marked for systematic annihilation. How can I not see Nazism as the greater evil?

Judging by this sentence David extracted from D. West’s book, I am not certain she makes a distinction between the evils of National Socialism and Communism. According to my reading, anti-Bolsheviks were, more often than not, fascists and Nazi-collaborators and sympathizers.

        • monostor

Have you read West’s book? She explains and illustrates with factual accounts of Soviet dissidents the distinction you so want to see. All this lamenting about who said what about a book that none of those who criticize it ever read it, it’s becoming ridiculously childish, anti-intellectual and anti-commonsensical.

          • ziggy zoggy

Says another Westroll who hasn’t read her book. Not that I could blame you, even if you could find a copy.

          • joe

You are fooling no one. Your copy of West’s book is the one you left unread at that trailer park yard sale you mentioned so many mindless comments early on. Judging from your comments, it’s not likely you’ve read anything more substantial than an advertisement on your box of Coca Puffs. You are a mindless sycophant trolling for a response from Mr. Horowitz. There are many well constructed comments from folks who disagree with David; and there are many who intelligently support him. Your comments do absolutely nothing in any respect except to highlight your bigotry and utter stupidity.

          • ziggy zoggy

            Joemo$exual,

          • ziggy zoggy

You didn’t read it. You are a sock puppet qu eer bait chomo.

        • Fritz

Actually Nazism was both an political economic and racially supremacist ideology. As for Communism, prior to his death Stalin was planning another series of mass arrests, this time for Jews. Prior to that he had several ethnic groups uprooted and exiled to Siberia because he didn’t believe that they were trustworthy.

          • ReyR

Knowing what we know about the Chechens, he did the right thing.
The US Gov uprooted over 110,000 Japanese-Americans and 250,000 German-Americans. We don’t know what further plans Hoover had prior to his death, though.
Oh, and don’t forget Native Americans before that. In fact, there was no war when the Indians were put away, but they were sitting on that nice land, being very much in the way. You see, nice people needed that land, and the darkies had to move. Simple as that.
But Russia is e-e-evil. And Stalin, and oh, communism…
            Evil Russian supremacists!

  • Linda

Does it really make any difference who started this? What is important is who is going to be mature and adult enough to end it. I believe that I am not alone in just wanting to see it end and who is going to be the one big enough to end it and let go of this need to be “right”.

Why not trust people enough to read Diane West’s book if they wish and determine if it is accurate or not. And if there are parts of the book that are inaccurate, so be it. Anyone that has studied historians knows one basic principle, it is only as accurate as the perception of author and if there might be another view isn’t this what makes it accurate in the end. The Bible is a classic example; what makes the Gospels accurate is that there is a a difference in the interpretation of some of the core events.

If the basic concept is that Diane West, David Horowitz and Mr. Radosh all are anti-communism that is all we need to know. And if all three write from that perspective we are fine. Now if one sees the facts as one way and the others a different way, anyone serious about getting the answers will study further and uncover the inaccuracies. But the basic concept is the same, all three are anti-communist.

The best answer to all of this would simply be to state that there are some areas of dispute and please read works from all three of you, Mr. Horowitz. There is no need to have turned this into such a major issue. If I didn’t know better the end result is to sell more of Mr. Radosh and your own books, and you could not be doing more to encourage us to read Diane West’s book.

Learn to pick a battle that is worth the effort and frankly I do not see where this one really is worthy of the time and attention put into it. Further, to continue it this far has discouraged me in such a way that I don’t spend the time reading FrontPage like I used to do. I will turn to other sources for information where the conduct is mature and were people are shown more respect and trust, trust in that they are mature enough to read your information and gain the best from it. Bickering is not that avenue.

    • ziggy zoggy

For somebody who wants to see something end, you sure wrote a long and tedious comment.

We both know you will never read Worst’s book. Not even if you manage to find a copy at a yard sale in a trailer park.

David I once admired you. I won’t get into details because I am a simle man who’s a cripple. My question is simply-what color are your diapers today and has this been a light shown on your true belief and character? The book sounds good. The fight is childish at best and possibly much more. I’m gonna buy her book and unsubscribe to your site. Totalitarians always expose themselves in the end because their arrogance is the core of their being. I hope I’m wrong and I’ll keep my eyes open for guys like you and Radosh. What is your net worth by the way. It seems a little Saul Alinsky to me. “In order to destroy them, become one of them”. You I believe in Malibu or close to it and he croaked in Carmel. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Give Coulter our best. She appreciates the press I’m sure. Ain’t Hannity but it’s better than nothin. Some of the rubes in this business motivation is not to turn the ship around but to have the spotlight on them and not avoid crashing the ship. Damn shame. Money power and fame.

    • ziggy zoggy

Dude, I think your mind is crippled.

      • mo up in the northeast

That’s not a nice thing to say.

        • ziggy zoggy

The truths sometimes hurts. NOBODY deserves a free ride. Do you think crippled people deserve to p!$$ in a public toilet before you do? Condescending to them is not noble. It is insulting.

          John is stupid.

          • Nick

You have claimed that during and after the war the “impotent” Soviet forces never managed to do anything other than temporarily occupy territory that was liberated by the Allies.

So when did the Americans cross the Elbe and liberate Poland again?

  • John Mohawk

I gotta hit this once again. This pissing fight is going on while the Reds, yeah, COMMUNISTS have infiltrated everthing including the media, academia, federal government, unions and more up to and including the presidency. These people are not liberals they’re communists pure and simple. The root word of liberal is Liberty. Do any of these people believe in Liberty? Of course not so lets stop pissing in our own drawers and fight these Reds. People are no longer ashamed of being labeled Marxists. They laugh it off. Michael Moore, Matt Damon and a host of others don’t seem to give a damn. I’m a duck and cover kid and I remember when communism was considered a treasonous act and belief. Now it’s “whatever-they’re just liberals”. Really? Stop fighting and get back to work if your beliefs are really virtuous. Ask yourself-do you have virtue or is this a business model? The players all have lots of money. Most of us don’t and can’t escape on a Lear jet to Belize at a moments notice. Stop it David or piss off. Why don’t you look at the lefist cultural problem in the Jewish arena-yeah, Communists are all through these institutions and a disproportnate percentage by way far, not seem to be but are JEWS. I know you’re Jew and I considered a Patriot so lets get back to work. Alot of work on Islam and yeah it’s a major problem but no one talks about destroyed from within by Jews. It’s an issue sir.

    • mo up in the northeast

I’m an Irish Catholic with a big hunk of Jewish relatives. One of the most decent, loving, wonderful, suprerb people I’ve ever met, is my brother-in-law, Arnie, from Brooklyn. He’s what you may call, an old fashioned liberal. He has explained to me that he knows of people persecuted under the Shah. And then the dope Jimmy Carter gave us ayatollahs. I say dictators need to be replaced with entrepreneurship. And THIS is the crux of the matter, IMHO. Islam IS communism. Pacepa’s book addresses that. Arafat? In bed with KGB. Viktor Bout? armed jihadists. Syria? Putin supports BOTH sides, I’d say. But you are right in your description of the deleterious morphing of the concept of “liberal”. Michael Moore? A big fat hypocrite, rich from capitalism, which he claims to detest. But as we fight tooth and nail, over left vs. right, I feel strongly, that the Bilderberg/Illuminati?CFR/Tri Lateral Commission/Euro Banker cabal laughs all the way to their drug cartel fueled riches. MORE money than can be conceived of. But they want our small business cash. And Obama has been hired to assist. They are Satanic. Read Malachi Martin. Average hard working Jewish person? God bless him/her. Rothschild Zionist? I got me a problem with them or any nationality of globalist fiend: especially the monstrous John Brennan Irish Islamist.

      • ziggy zoggy

Good points but are you on the right thread?

        • mo up in the northeast

I didn’t enjoy the kind of education that most the eloquent people on this site, were privy too. I went to CCSU in New Britain, which, I’m thankful to Mr. Horowitz for citing in its heavily communist faculty. I try to see the biggest possible picture, making sense of an enabled Marxist in the White House, and questioning as deeply as I can, how and why he continues to get away with his tyranny.

          • ziggy zoggy

I totally agree mate, but this thread is about an insane commie hater and her whack job acolytes and not about the Obamessiah.

    • ziggy zoggy

      Joos, Joos, JOOS!!!!!!

Being a Worstroll means never having to admit you’re insane.

    • ziggy zoggy

Right. Because endorsing an absolutely insane book that nobody will ever read is a good way to fight Marxism.

  • gawxxx

hey david ! grow up and let it go ! you have grown tiresome !

    • ziggy zoggy

Read something else then. Maybe you can find a copy of Worst’s book in the last bookstore on Earth.

    • ziggy zoggy

Hey gawlord: grow up and spit it out.

  • My 2 Cents

    David,

I’m a big fan of your work but you got this one way wrong and made it personal against Ms. West from the get go.

Your article above is a personal attack against Ms. West while proclaiming that you are not attacking her and taking the high road. You so badly want to own the status of victimhood at any cost. Good play just not well executed.

The more you attack Ms. West the more people will hear about and read her book – and that is a good thing – Diana West is brilliant.

The problem is that I also love the work you are doing at FPM and through the Horowitz foundation. My concern is that your snarky passive aggressive attack style makes you appear as a buffoon and diminishes the good work you do. (See I can do the passive aggressive style to – its effective but boorish)

The comments made by your readership shows that you and FPM attract independent thinkers who can objectively evaluate an issue and articulate it. 95% of the FPM posters disagree with you on this one but remain loyal to your work. That is high praise in and of itself.

    • ziggy zoggy

Worst is a $hitty writer and defending her is a geeky waste of time.

Nobody will read her book and claiming that Stalin controlled the U.S. from WWII till the Eienhower administration is not only insane, it is incredibly stupid. You need a better dictionary if you think that skank is “brilliant.”

      • My 2 Cents

Ziggy – Many people have read and will read Diana West’s book because it is it is well researched, written, and sourced.

You may not agree with her and that’s ok but taking it so personally you call her names like an elementary school cyber bully does not help your position.

You have some misogynist anger issues Ziggy you need to work out.

I suggest this Diana West writes on subject matters more suitable to your personality Ziggy, This Diana West is an international board certified lactation consultant (IBCLC) :)))

        • ziggy zoggy

IBCLC? Wow! I take it all back, then. She’s awe inspiring! LOL!!!!! I want my milky from saggy lesbians!

Books that are well researched, written and sourced don’t claim the commies controlled America and Britain in WWII.

Worst is a whack job and you Worstrolls are……..worse.

  • aberlaw

David, I have long admired your work and will continue to do so. That having been said, I have not read Ms. West’s book and was unaware of its existence prior to reading this post; but have done so, I feel obligated to do so.

I don’t believe anything else can explain the events and positions of the United States during WW II other than accepting the premise that:

“The vast and deep extent of Communist penetration, heretofore denied, had in fact reached a tipping point to become a de facto Communist occupation of the American center of power.”

Entering the war in the first instance served to help no group more than the Communists in Russia and China; the policy of unconditional surrender in the face of many very credible efforts by groups in Germany seeking aid; the result of Yalta cannot be laid upon Churchill for Roosevelt and Stalin had castrated him early on.

The “Venona Secrets”, “Day of Deceit”, “Allen Dulles, Master of Spies” and, most recently, “Wild Bill Donovan” lay out the blue print and “The Black Book of Communism” the result.

    • ziggy zoggy

Right. America entering the war helped the Soviet Inion and China more than it helped Britain or France.

      Westrolls=abject insanity.

  • whatthehell

Much of this discussion about what the soviets did in Eastern Europe and Europe at the close of WW II is old news. It has been buried by the left, but was available during the fifties. No, I did not obtain my information from Joe McCarthy, it was readily available from many sources at that time. Horowitz is a lefty trying to pose as a conservative. Nothing new to that ploy by liberals. I have not read Ms. West’s book, but I will. Stalin conned FDR and FDR threatened Churchill, so he would concede to Stalin. FDR was a closet communist, as was most of his cabinet.

    • ziggy zoggy

Yeah. Horowitz is under deep cover. He’s spent thirty years or so as a commie spy.

You Westrolls are conspiracy nut whack-jobs.

    • Hesperado

          • ziggy zoggy

And do answer the question: when did you embrace your chin drooling insanity?

          • Highlander

You have claimed that during and after the war, the “impotent” Soviet forces only ever managed to temporarily occupy territories that were liberated by the Brits and the Yanks.

So when did the Americans cross the Elbe and liberate Poland then?

          • ziggy zoggy

On the same day an irrelevant question was posed by a hopeless ret@rd.

          • Nick

You have made the rather astonishing claim that, during and after WWII, the “impotent” Soviet forces only ever managed to temporarily occupy territories that were liberated by the Brits and the Yanks.

So when did the Americans cross the Elbe and liberate Poland then?

The point being that if you know so little as to make claims such as that, then you cannot expect to have your criticisms of Ms. West’s account of events post-WWII to be taken seriously.

          • ziggy zoggy

So why isn’t Eastern Europe occupied by the Soviet Union? Why did the Soviet Union collapse more than twenty years ago?

            Westroll ret@rd.

          • Nick

You have made the rather astonishing claim that, during and after WWII, the “impotent” Soviet forces only ever managed to temporarily occupy territories that were liberated by the Brits and the Yanks.

When are you going to get it? You and Radosh started this feeding frenzy. You have lost mightily. Accept it and move on. Better yet, get a handle on West’s footnotes.

    • mo up in the northeast

The “style” of the way David is being attacked is disturbing. It doesn’t pass the “smell” test. I’m not much of a student of historical events described, whereas the many astute readers of FPM, are. I do, however, have strong intuition. Some of the Breitbart and even FPM comments are suspicious, as all kinds of odd accusations are being tossed at David. It wasn’t David who hurled the personal assaults, it was the other side. If they can’t argue on the basis of facts, they begin the ad hominem. This is stuff the left uses. Like I said, doesn’t pass the “smell” test.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Eric-Paddon/100001252965548 Eric Paddon

No sir, it was Radosh, of whom it can be said has a peculiar Pavlovian effect on David, who launched the personal attacks, and when he did, David like an obedient dog jumped and followed his lead with a vengeance. Then we had the even more despicable personal attack from convicted felon Conrad Black (after what he pulled I am no longer inclined to believe in his innocence) who used such classy rhetoric as saying Diana West had not been “housetrained” to justify his screed. All the defenders of Diana have done is call out this hypocrisy and its chilling air of suppression of points of view and debate that transcend the matter of whether or not West got everything right or not. That is the real disgrace of this whole affair and Horowitz has only himself to blame for it.

        • mo up in the northeast

I am not a sir. Mo is short for Maureen. I love America and I love free speech, and I say, “Yeah. Let’s discuss”. But this situation does not add up. And are you following me around on purpose?

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Eric-Paddon/100001252965548 Eric Paddon

No, I am not “following you around” I’m treating your remarks with a serious response and pointing out how what doesn’t pass the smell test is your version of events. Radosh precipitated this because of his preening ego and his desire to smear someone who echoed the previous works of M. Stanton Evans (an author he has also smeared in the past with a dishonest hit job) and Horowitz compounded that by suppressing favorable reviews of West’s work which are as legitimate as anything Radosh would have to say on the subject.

As for your gender, you didn’t identify it at any time, so that can’t be my problem. But now that you’ve identified yourself as female I’ll remember to treat that fact with respect, unlike the misogynistic bully who is David’s biggest rear-end smoocher in this thread.

          • TienBing

“…smear someone who echoed the previous works of M. Stanton Evans…”
I think that may explain the personal and virulent nature of the Rodash’s “review” of American Betrayal. West’s research corroborates Evens research and conclusions. Rodash had earlier attacked Evens and was firmly refuted.

          • ziggy zoggy

        • Julius O’Malley

I am absolutely stunned to find a seemingly never-ending stream of foul-mouthed, juvenile comments from Ziggy Zoggy allowed to remain on such a respectable website. What on earth is going on when this:

“West couldn’t inspire a bad bout of diarrhea. Not even if she put her misshapen lips directly on your @$$hole.”

is not deleted. It is an issue of decorum. Referring to Vladimir Bukovsky as “Jackoffsky”! What possesses him to imagine that this is “wit”? It beggars belief that place of serious intellectual discourse such as FPM permits such a sexually-obsessed, abusive child – to roam here unsupervised. Please Mr Horowitz, impose some standards of civilised behaviour.

          • ziggy zoggy

Yes please. Censor my comments so Worst can be defended by her Worstrolls sock puppets.

  • ziggy zoggy

The Red Army had Land-Lease fleets of Jeeps and Dodges to drive deep into Europe to ethically cleanse McCarthyists???????? WTF???? That is proof that Diane Worst is a nut bag, right there. Roosevelt would have given them welfare Cadillacs, and Churchill would have come up with BMWs, at the very least. Maybe even a fleet of Rolls Royces.

Dianne Worst seems to have an extremely unhealthy fascination with de facto penetration. “Hey, ret@rd. that’s what Happy Hour is for. Don’t take out your frustration on us.”

    • Fritz

That line about the Red Army having a Lend-Lease fleet of Jeeps and Dodges to drive deep into Europe was beyond nutty. While it is true that there was some aid and war material send to the Soviets during the war this statement implies that such war materials were sent over as a plot by fifth columnists inside the White House. It also ignores why Hitler’s armies invaded the Soviet Union in the first place, which was for land, oil, manpower, and raw materials, to further the expansion of the Nazi empire. Had the USSR totally collapsed and been conquered by Hitler’s forces, and gained a hold of those resources, which unlike the Soviets they were much better prepared to exploit, it would not have bode well for Britain and the other Western powers.
I will readily admit that I have not read this book but if such statements are in there it comes off more as a manifesto by a Bircher then a historical investigation. Perhaps it could be argued that FDR and Trueman could or should have taken a hard line against the Soviets earlier on, fortunately Trueman did. In the case of Trueman if he really was a sock puppet of Soviet infiltrators, why did he send U.S troops into Korea in 1950? But I know what the comeback will be, “Well why did he fire Macarthur?”

“The British and American peoples to this day perceive their contribution to the eastern war in terms of convoys heroically fought across the Arctic to Murmansk, bearing massive Western aid. Reality was less simple. In 1941-42, both Britain and the US were desperately short of war material for their own armed forces, and had little to spare for Stalin’s people. For eighteen months after Russia was invaded, the period during which its survival hung in the balance, Western aid was much more marginal than the rhetoric of Winston Churchill and Franklin Roosevelt suggested, and ordinary citizens in the West were encouraged to suppose.”

For many years after 1945, the democracies found it gratifying to perceive the Second World War in Europe as a struggle for survival between themselves and Nazi tyranny. Yet the military outcome of the contest was overwhelmingly decided by the forces of Soviet tyranny, rather than by Anglo-American armies . Perversely, this reality was better understood by many contemporary British people than it has been by their descendants.

If you found one or more, but not many, things in the West book that were not to your liking, why attack the entire book. Is it possible that the same types affiliated with CAIR and have infiltrated our government (by appointment I may add) were also insinuated into our government in the past? It seems she is searching for answers to many questions in our history. This seems to be getting vitriolic and hysterical. I agree with wsilverm

Why ignore stupid mistakes when you can excuse them?

  • newsel

If I were DH I would give this argument up as he is beating his head against a brick wall. But thanks for the link to VB’s Brietbart’s article. Well worth the read. The proposition that there were Soviet agents in WDC during WWII that influenced a sympathetic FDR and which, in turn, eventually led to Eastern Europe being partitioned and millions dying in Gulags is not far fetched. Just the opposite. It is exactly what happened. Just why did the Allies over supply the USSR knowing that post war the enemy would be the Capitalist nations? Bit like the Syrian question today: just why would the US want to arm the terrorists when we would be next on their hit list?

VD’s observation “No wonder, too, that this book is hated by ‘the consensus,” who feel perfectly comfortable in today’s world, and see no moral crisis at all” remains valid today with the continuing socialist attack on our moral compass, the “family” structure and a growing dependency on a socialist style of big government.

This is the “communist academic left” trying to back track. It’s ashame that on Americas college campi free speech is not allowed. Mention that you are against homosexual marriage on a college campus and you will be reprimanded by the administration.

    • mo up in the northeast

Thank you. And speaking of homosexuality, I’ll share my Breitbart quote with you:

David has a right to defend himself, and if Ms. West is
claiming untrue things, of course he is going to speak up. I’ll be honest. I
don’t think we get the truth enough. I will add, that the most gratifying, and
underreported event of about 2 years ago, was, that outside a Bilderberg
meeting, an OWS kid embraced a Tea Partier. I felt alive and positive when I
read that, the blessed common denominator being love of, and preservation, our
very sovereignty itself. There is a lot of ooh ooh “stuff” out
there. Can’t say this. Can’t say that. My fantasy? Truly? It is, that the world
will hear the truth of the murder of Donald Young, the openly gay choir
director of the Rev. Jeremiah’s “church.” I’ve been hounding the Pres and
Congress with letter after letter, for three years now, hoping that whoever is
being homosexually blackmailed in Congress, will fearlessly let Mr. Young’s
name ring, in the halls of Congress. The thing is, Karl Rove’s Patton &
Boggs law firm went after Larry Sinclair. Donald Young’s murder took place on
12/23/07 on George W. Bush’s watch. The officials who persecuted Sinclair were
part of the Bush admin. Not the Obama administration. Old man, George HW Bush
is on record saying “New World Order’. God bless Jerome Corsi, the ONLY well
known journalist to not only call HW on his “proclamation of NWO” but to
actually go into the congregation of Wright’s church, who got testimony from
women, whose names had to be changed, who said they feared for their very lives
to speak of the orientation of Barack Obama, as they claim to be reminded of
the fate that befell Donald Young. Norma Jean, mother of Donald, is former
Chicago PD, and said the police had told her, that her life, too, was in
danger. This is Twilight Zone land. This is people being above the law, this is
Satanic Rothschild World Government scenario stuff. This is not Paul Revere’s America. And I
sound so incredibly naïve to articulate it like this. But, I am encouraged. The
Sept. 23 edition of National Examiner, (yeah, yeah, it’s a grocery store
tabloid) carried the story of those questioning Obama’s sexual orientation.
Pictures of Wayne Madsen (former Naval Intelligence) Kevin Dujan (openly gay Chicago writer) Larry
Sinclair and James Manning ( who amazingly found me on Twitter) are all
pictured. People, we are in some kind
of hell, and I don’t know the names of all the devils stirring it up.
Incidentally, I lost a loved one to AIDS, so I am no homophobe. I’m a simple
person who wants justice for one Donald Young.

  • http://www.facebook.com/ernest.brown.946 Ernest Brown

Mr. Horowitz, it ill behooves you to act in this way after your shenanigans with the original review and your subsequent attitude. You and Radosh behaved exactly like members of the cast of MEAN GIRLS rather than giving a sound, substantive critique of West’s book stripped of personal attack and leaving it at that. -By your own admission-, you’ve done more to promote the book by this foolishness than anything, cheering when an FDR hagiographer like Conrad Black supports you but counseling caution when Bukovsky and Stoilov call you and Radosh out for your McCarthyism smear that -started- this whole affair.

The sad thing is that West’s book is more than capable of being critiqued on its merits, if the Breitbart excerpts are anything to go by. Her blind acceptance of MacArthur’s apologias for his own dismal failures in the Philippines and the ignorance of the reasons for a cross-channel invasion over going through the military death-traps of the Balkans and Italy would have been very fertile avenues of analysis. Instead, you knowingly and deliberately used the one line of ad hominem that would rightly enrage historically aware anti-collectivists and cause them to leap to her defense.

  • Chezwick

I think there is enough blame to go around. David and Radosh threw the first punch…their critique certainly had some merit, but they were unduly harsh.. West’s response has been vicious and vindictive. David’s counter-responses have also been quite harsh.

I love David Horowitz. His contributions to the cause of human freedom have been monumental, particularly regarding higher education. Nothing in this ugly spat negates that fact.

I also admire Diana West. I read her columns regularly.

Sometimes people fall out. It happens. Those of us on the outside are free to pick sides, but let’s not demonize one another. Disagree with either David or Diane, but let’s be rational enough to acknowledge that both are important to the conservative cause.

    • ziggy zoggy

      Well written comment.

West is still a harridan and lunatic.

  • Spencer Warren

The issue comes down to this: David’s angry critics appear unfamiliar with basic scholarly practices, which are exemplified in the Radosh review. They ought to spend less time on shallow columnists like Anne Coulter and more time reading serious works of scholarship like Fraser Harbutt’s recent Yalta 1945. They suffer from what Churchill called “regimented minds.”

    • Fritz

Anne Coulter is an author of pulp political books. and largely an entertainer, I’ve been ignoring her since she got behind Mitt Romney during the primaries. How can you call yourself a conservative yet back a one term blue state governor as a serious candidate?

      • ziggy zoggy

Ann Coulter is hilarious and sells a buttload of books. Good books.

Beat that. Dianne West sure as $hit can’t.

      • ziggy zoggy

And oh, yeah. Mitt Romney is a responsible adult, superb businessman and successful leader. He would have beaten the Kenyan if he had taken the kid gloves off – and if tw@ts like you had bothered to vote.

“One term blue state governor?” I think what you meant to write is “Mormon,” you bigot.

        • Fritz

But he was a one term governor of a blue state, did I say anything about him being a Mormon? He was also responsible for creating and implementing the very system used as a template for Obamacare in Massachusetts. It’s clear from your comments that you are no more then an idiotic troll, Coulter is supporting Diana West, the Bircher, in this fight against Howitzer and Radosh, you can’t have it both ways.

If I were an AMERICAN citizen I probably would have voted for Romney over Barry, unless you are advocating voter fraud, but you make him sound like another Ronald Reagan. Romney lost because he was a Blue state Rhino and could not defend the four years he spent in public office, and Rhinos piss off conservatives.

          • ziggy zoggy

Romney lost because d!ckless whiners like you sat out the election. You did it because he is a Mormon and you don’t have the minimum level of decency to admit your bigotry.

        • http://www.facebook.com/ernest.brown.946 Ernest Brown

To the extent that cutting barbs and passive-aggressive quips exist in academic discourse, they at best add -nothing- to an argument. Therefore, are we justified in thinking that their bad behavior justifies yours? That’s exactly the mentality that landed Horowitz and Radosh in this mess in the first place.

          • ziggy zoggy

Thank you—both David and Ron—for your ongoing willingness to defend the standards
of historical truth and critical inquiry in the case of Diana
    West’s work. The
hyperbolic distortion and then falsification of history have
been the tools of the totalitarian Left for generations now.
Similarly, closing one’s mind in order to believe such
distortions and falsifications, because one wants to believe
them, has been the double-think of the Left for those same
generations. Your efforts to prevent those of us who are anti-Communists and
conservatives from entering the dangerous world of make-believe
have been vital and heroic. Calling
things by their rightful names morally and factually earns one
enemies whose venom can be appalling. On the other hand, it
permits one to look at oneself in the mirror and know that one
has done one’s duty and kept one’s integrity, whatever the
    cost. Please know how

Who gets to call people communists? This was Horowitz’s turf. He connected the dots between Stalin and modern liberals, he put in the time to develop the false dichotomies and anti-concepts and now he’s going to be usurped by some woman because she is willing to go further than he ever dreamed.

  • Spencer Warren

David’s attackers bring to mind Joe McCarthy’s tv response to Edward R. Murrow’s See It Now expose. McCarthy’s vicious ad hominem smears in response to Murrow’s calm factual presentation show all one needs to know about this demagogue, who did more than anyone to damage the anti-communist cause. David’s attackers seem as hysterical as McCarthy; most of them likely defend him still.

    • roastytoasty

I saw an old film clip of the pompous E.R. Murrow doing a split-screen telephone interview with Elvis Presley. Murrow asked Elvis some kind of loaded question about the current political situation and Elvis replied, “Mister Murrow, I’m an entertainer sir and I’m really not qualified to talk about those things.” The disappointment was visible on E.R’s face.

  • Jed West

    The
title of Horowitz’s latest incoherent rant is extremely revelatory of his
    bilious character and pathological dishonesty.
He reduces a landmark essay by Vladimir Bukovsky and Pavel Stroilov –
the rave review of “American Betrayal” and brilliant expose and analysis of the
smear campaign against its author Diana West — to “Another Personal Attack
Inspired by West.” The title implies that somehow the Svengali Diana West (who has
not met Bukovsky) was able to manipulate him into personally attacking David
Horowitz and praising her book. He accuses Bukovsky of joining “her wolf pack.” (In Horowitz-world you’re a member of “wolf
pack” if you disagree with him). To use Horowitz’s favorite word in this essay,
this is beyond “preposterous”. It is
also a measure of the size of Horowitz’s ego and lack of self awareness that he
is not even given pause by the fact the Bukovsky took the time to write this massive
essay analyzing the book and the Horowitz smear campaign. After doing so, Bukovsky comes down unequivocally on West’s
side. It does not give Horowitz pause
that a man of Bukovsky’s intellect, stature, proven physical and mental courage
and towering expertise in the subject matter writes about American Betrayal that “Groundbreaking books about the
history of communism, such as Robert Conquest’s The Great Terror, Alexander
    Solzhenitsyn’s Gulag Archipelago or Viktor Suvorov’s Ice-Breaker,
are never written by “professional” historians. Indeed, historians
typically meet those books with remarkable hostility. “ Every time Horowitz gets near a computer, he
embarrasses himself (although he doesn’t know it) with his outrageous and
    dishonest ravings. He writes, “It
grieves me to see a hero of the anti-Communist struggle, Vladimir Bukovsky,
join the character assassins that Diana West has mobilized to attack Radosh and
me because Frontpage posted a bad review of her book.” (It’s remarkable how this Diana West is able
to mobilize all these “character assassins” but that’s another trip down the
Horowitz rabbit hole.) No. The truth is that it “grieves” Horowitz that
he has been thoroughly exposed as a malevolent fraud by the greatest living
Soviet dissident. And rather than have
the grace and wit to examine himself and consider the possibility that he was
wrong, Horowitz lashes out at Bukovsky as a simple minded “character assassin”
and member of the Diana West “wolf pack.” Pathetic.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Eric-Paddon/100001252965548 Eric Paddon

Well said, Jed. And meantime, I hope everyone has noticed that David’s only major fan in this thread is a disgusting, vulgar Keith Olbermann wannabe with a grade-school moniker who evidently didn’t have enough of a life other than to write umpteen variations on his toilet mouthed, misogynistic personal attacks. Insomuch as David personally praised this pathetic loser once before, he now is obligated to declare whether or not he approves of this loser’s tactics. Inquiring minds are waiting David, to see if there is still integrity in you and whether or not you endorse this kind of garbage as part of your own little “army”.

Horowitz deleted two comments made by Z-Z which were overtly pornographic, in which he indicated a desire to have sexual relations with another commenter.

So Horowitz had thought about what is acceptable on his website, and what is not. And given the evidence (what he has deleted and what he has let stand) Horowitz clearly believes that the disgusting comments you refer to are A-OK on his website.

Your effectiveness in showing the Truth, with your previous experiences seems to make you a target of these revisionists. In WW2 we fought the Nazis as did the Russians, we were not seeking out “anti- Boleheviks to ethnicly cleanse” This is pure LIE. Anti-Bolsheviks…rounded up by the allies and handed over to Russia, Wow, and how did they recognize them? An anti-bolshevik could be a Nazi, is that who you mean? Eisenhower and Patton considered wiping out Russia, hardly in bed with them.West does her best to discredit the anti-Communist cause- how would you characterize that? Not preposterous at all – maybe unlikely – I’m sure you can demonstrate why, but not preposterous or impossible.

So one day Winston Churchill drew up the division of post war Europe in a vacuum, without input or influence? That is a very preposterous proposition.

“The worst aspect of West’s relentless personal attacks on Radosh and me are that they convert intellectual disagreements about a book…”

Please cite where West said we should have “hugged the Nazis”. Give us a quote and page number.
What West *does* argue is how FDR’s insistence on “unconditional surrender” was not favored by everyone and may have undermined *anti-Nazi* German resistance against Hitler (those who were involved in assassination plots against him). In making that point, West is merely echoing an academic argument made in the past by authors that Mr. Preening Ego, Ron Radosh never bothered to get his panties wadded up about (Thomas Fleming, “The New Dealers War”, Robert Nisbet, “Roosevelt And Stalin-The Failed Courtship”). Making that argument is not about “hugging Nazis” except in the vivid imaginations of siilly people with no ability on how to use their brains properly.

I have not read her book but the excerpts you cite have sparked my interest in doing so. Those excerpts are thoughts that I’ve come to view as enlightened. A lot of what you note from her book has been suppressed. I conclude this after years of reading and speaking with knowledgeable people and having heard first-person accounts. I now think the so-called “Greatest Generation” (note this was a Brokaw book) was the Most-duped Generation,” doing the bidding of Marxists. How can you argue that given the present national and international political climate?!

Horowitz keeps pouring gasoline on the flames. He is aggressive and hostile, yet claims he is the victim.

I think what angers Horowitz the most is that West is right – the USA was in bed with Communism and aided the Soviet Union in its destruction of anti-communist Europe.

It’s where West is dreadfully wrong (wrt the Philippines & D-Day) that her book comes a-cropper and reflects badly on serious discussion of Communist infiltration and influence on the government. It’s too bad that Horowitz and Radosh decided to become even more unserious by unleashing an abusive ad hominum slur in the very title of Radosh’s “takedown.”

The Introduction with which Mrs. West begins her book is, by itself, worth the price of the book. Therein she details the Democrat Political Party’s carefully planned and ruthlessly executed character assassination of William A. Wirt. FDR himself got into the act and helped send Mr. Wirt to an early grave. You could look it up: Google WILLIAM A WIRT. As the fabric of common decency unravels, one thing is becoming crystal clear: Communist = Democrat = Death-Death and more Death.

Roosevelt’s economic policies, from a conservative standpoint, were terrible. I do not consider FDR a particularly admirable man on a personal level. He was no Churchill. Unlike Churchill, Roosevelt did not shape public opinion. He followed public opinion. This book is about the second world war, its aftermath and the spread of Communism. If West believes America’s entry into the second world war was ill-conceived, I think she is wrong.

Almost all books have errors in them, and West’s book is hardly an exception. However, it is being attacked as if it was the Communist Manifesto. On second thoughts, I don’t think Horowitz has attacked the book as ferociously and subjected Marx and Engels to such lowly personal attacks. Is the book worse than the Communist Manifesto, and is West worse than Marx and Engels?

Why Horowitz is playing Alinsky in dealing with West, I don’t know, but he clearly wants to destroy her career. And watching it all isn’t pretty.

        Shame on you, Mr. Horowitz!

Yes. Worst is… Heh,…worse than Marx and Engels. Although she is more masculine than either one of them was.

Is that what turns you on about her?

It’s not so much that Horowitz’s behaviors indicate that he wants to destroy West’s career — it’s that this book seems to present a deep threat to him. One can surmise that its thesis ruins — or at least opens a dangerous crack of light in the direction of ruining — the carefully constructed pseudo-anti-Communism industry iin which Horowitz has been industriously active for decades. Until someone comes up with a more plausible explanation for why an otherwise intelligent anti-Communist would be behaving the way Horowitz has been behaving in this regard, then my hypothesis seems the only game in town.

          • ziggy zoggy

Yes, Horowitz is a commie masquerading as a conservative, YOU BAT$HIT INSANE WESTROLL.

Really? This sort of comment is acceptable? I see the moderators have finally deleted at least some of this foul-mouthed character’s comments. This one is pretty low, though.

He is either a cretin or a Communist, trying to flush this place into the sewer. Either way he should be banned.

At the end of the conflict with Germany, Stalin had about 6,000,000 battle-tested veterans in his Army. Eisenhower had maybe 1,000,000, many of whom were green troops new to the theatre. Had push come to shove, it is far more likely that Stalin would have pushed the US out of Western Europe than the US would have pushed the Soviets out of Eastern Europe. Sheesh, get real for a minute.

      • UIO

U.S. troops were garbage, I’ll give you that.

Threatening to nuke Moscow, or at worst nuking a few cities, would probably be enough to make the entire Soviet Union collapse.

        • ziggy zoggy

Yes. If only U.S. troops weren’t garbage.

          Stupid Westroll.

          • Nick

that’s right, in your world the yanks crossed the elbe and liberated poland.

        • Nick

I recall reading about Churchill wanting to hit Stalin with the news that the Yanks now had a nuclear weapon – was it at Yalta? But when they slipped that thunderbolt into the conversation Stalin just smiled and laughed as if it was of no consequence. Possibly because he already knew?

Apologies for the lack of citation – just off a night shift & going on (rather fuzzy) memory alone here. ITV’s “The World At War” maybe??

      • ziggy zoggy

So why didn’t the Soviet cannon fodder push the Allies out of Western Europe or anywhere else?

Robert Conquest’s ‘Reflections On A Ravaged Century’ (W.W. Norton, 2000) give the piercing review of a 19th century philosophy on the 20th century world. ‘Reflections On A Ravaged Century’ is an erudite, high flown appraisal that reveals the cruel delusion of communism and a fit companion for Mrs. West’s ‘American Betrayal’. Mr. Conquest refers to the entire communist manifesto as
    m-i-n-d-s-l-a-u-g-h-t-e-r. Ouch!

West’s book is straight-up Nazi filth and so is she. So are all of her admirers on this thread and anywhere else.

In those days, Stalin’s most effective way to slander people was to accuse them of being pro-Nazi— a treasonous offense in World War II. In 1945, Stalin created an intelligence unit that specialized in framing people as Nazi collaborators— SMERSH. Stalin himself had a hand in coining its name. It was from the Russian words meaning “death to spies” (smert shpionam). Stalin subordinated the unit directly to himself. Its thugs soon became adept at the mass framing of people as Nazis, forcing them to confess and removing them from the scene by arrest, trial, imprisonment, or death. SMERSH started out by slandering as Nazi collaborators hundreds of thousands of Soviet citizens living in areas of the Soviet Union that had been occupied by the German Army, as well as almost all of the more than 2 million repatriated Soviet soldiers who had been taken prisoner by the German Wehrmacht. 11 In June 1945, the US ambassador in Moscow, Averell Harriman, reported to the State Department: “The Embassy knows of only a single instance in which a repatriated prisoner has returned to his home and family in Moscow.” 12

Since the war, the Soviets’ tried-and-true method had been wherever possible to slander their enemies as having been pro-Nazi.

Well, the libs are really lapping this up. Islam is destroying the world, Obamacare is going to destroy an already bankrupt America, and conservatives are fighting about WWII. Wonderful.

    Horowitz,

Was John Guardiano “not playing with a full deck” when he wrote Yes, American University Is Practicing De Facto Censorship then?

And were you “not playing with a full deck” when you published that article on your website?
