Paine was considered a malcontent (compulsive dissenter), a rabble rouser, and a social misfit by those who disagreed with his passionate orations and writings concerning freedom and resistance to tyrants.
I didn't claim Bukovsky = Paine. That is your own barking echoing in your mind.
You see parallels between de Blasio and Lenin? I don't. de Blasio is merely a cheap run of the mill Democrat pol. Lenin was truly dangerous

Your presumption that your own perspective is free of "ideology" does not, I fear, pass the smell test. In endorsing someone like Leffler who ultimately makes what I would call an ideological argument of his own about the supposed badness of US policymakers who did not encourage some kind of kumbaya rapprochment with an evil regime in the late 1940s, you are in the end, like it or not siding with someone who is making an ideological argument that the heinous nature of the Soviet state and its conduct deserved no consideration in the shaping of our policy. It is not a "non-ideological" perspective.

West’s book is indeed a popular account for a wider audience but one that nonetheless restates for that audience, arguments made in academic works by Evans and Romerstein. The point is not that I agree 100% with West (I don’t), but that she expresses a perspective that is not part of some oddball fringe territory as Radosh/Horowitz attempted to characterize it. One that is certainly more legitimate than say the Howard Zinn perspective (or more legitimate than the William Appleman Williams perspective that held too much sway in our diplomatic histories for far too long; there was a case where an exercise in so-called "revisionism" was fawned over if it served a particular ideological purpose, in this case blaming America for the Cold War. OTOH, if "revisionism" is employed to suggest a new look at McCarthy, then WATCH OUT!)

What’s impressive about the work of Evans/Romerstein is that it does utilize evidence which West does amplify on and ask us to consider. Evidence that is usually not considered in other works (such as Gaddis for instance). To suggest your authors have been flawlessly thorough to the nth degree and thus immunize themselves from charges of being an "ideologue" is again, not going to be credible.

And I'm a former student of Ernest May's. But your reply highlights the big difference between how we approach evaluating historical work. Like all ideologues, you measure how closely a given piece of work conforms to your ideological commitments. I prefer to measure how evidence is mustered in support of logical arguments. By your standard, the West book is a legitimate contribution to the literature on the Cold War. By mine, it's agitprop for the converted. But if a book starts these kinds of public playground fights on the hard right, I'm all for it.

I'm a former student of Gaddis's actually. Some commendable stuff but he is part of that group that hesitates from addressing the deeper picture of the impact of what spying had on the shaping of US policy. But the point you miss is that I take the view that the Evans/West perspective is legitimate to the discussion for consideration and Radosh simply wants it kept out, which is what I'm objecting to. Radosh believes there should only be one "anti-Communist" perspective and that's where he's getting raked over the coals. As for Leffler, his recent study tried to place the blame on the Cold War for the unreasonableness of anti-Soviet policymakers which in the end proves his valuelessness on this subject. The point of Evans/West is to note that at critical junctures, anti-Soviet advisors were the ones being kept silent while pro-Soviet advisors and in some cases spies were exercising disastrous influence.

Zinn and Foner are not my type--much too ideological. I'll take my cold war history from John Lewis Gaddis, Ernest May, Vojtech Mastny, Melvyn Leffler, and Allen Weinstein. You know, serious scholars. Watching you guys argue over fine points of hard right doctrine and how someone's family origins "prove" they are a communist deep down is like watching a bunch of old CPUSA guys argue with a bunch of old NYU Trotskyites....comical.
