> If Thornton is right, how is it that Republicans were the minority party in 1960 and 1964, before Medicare and all the entitlements that followed the Great Society programs were in place?

Because there's more than one way to lose an election.

Yes, the GOP ran a poor campaign tactically, and allowed the Dems to slime them unfairly on social issues. But the Republicans have shown they are unserious and unable to deal with these real facts:

Going into Iraq was an utter strategic, fiscal, military and moral disaster.
A relentlessly bellicose foreign policy is counter-productive to America.
Baby Bush exploded the debt.
Lack of government regulation - not "big government" - allowed the bank industry to nearly destroy the entire world economy.
Global warming is real. And so is evolution.
The answer to all economic circumstances is not "lower taxes, regulations and all of our boats will float to the top!"

The Republicans literally refuse to deal with reality as it exists on almost all issues.

The money that goes to the red patriot and producing states is mostly in the Farm Program, which is indeed a form of welfare. However you can consider it to be the 'tribute' the red states exact on the blue commie states in order to furnish the blue commie states with food stuffs, meat products, textiles, petroleum products, gas, oil, coal and energy, and precious metals.

A 2007 study, the results of which were released in 2008, found that 35% of the population paid no federal income tax. The study also found that those people wanted the taxes raised on the people who were paying federal income taxes. Mr Romney was privy to that information even if the low-information types, like yourself, weren't. So, yes, they are takers. We know that the huge piece of the bugetary pie is entitlements. The left likes to ignorantly moan about the defense buget, but that spending is not only Constitutional spending, but is only 4.5% of GDP.

Romney had a duel personality. He had no problem attacking and destroying his Republican rivals, he never laid a glove on Obama and he never tried to. He took all the rotten insults and lies from the left and never fought back. He and many others were a big let down.

Strangely all of the Republican leaders and conservative pundits joins in the attack of anyone that showed that showed courage and told the truth. Look at how they abandoned and attacked Michele Backmann. I don't see how they'll ever recover, the left certainly hasn't let up the attacks on them. They'll gladly grind them into dust, in between laughing at them.

The Bengazi dog and pony whitewash will take place tomorrow. I suspect that's all it will be, God forbide anyone speak the truth about Hillary Clinton.

Barack Obama appeased the Blacks, Muslims, hispanics (illegal immigration), gays, entitlement mentalities and the entertainment industry in a deceptive effort to get elected and … it worked.

Alexander Fraser Tytler – (1747 – 1813) – Professor of Universal History, and Greek and Roman Antiquities – University of Edinburgh

A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world’s greatest civilizations has been 200 years.

Great nations rise and fall. The people go from bondage to spiritual truth, to great courage, from courage to liberty, from liberty to abundance, from abundance to selfishness, from selfishness to complacency, from complacency to apathy, from apathy to dependence, from dependence back again to bondage.

I find it interesting that no one here mentions (or cares to admit) that the treatment meted out by the RNC establishment to the constituency of Ron Paul during the primary process effectively excluded millions of energized young people that might have made the difference in this last election.

That's not to say that Ron Paul would have been the candidate, even if all the chicanery and cheating and outright fascist and unAmerican shenanigans by the party bosses hadn't taken place during the Primaries and the Republican Convention. But had those milling hordes of energetic young people not been shat upon by checked-pants corporate RINOs and vilified by special-interest wonks (AIPAC), then the Republican candidate would surely have garnered the several millions of votes needed to defeat Barack Obama last November.

The fact is that millions of people did not vote for the Republican candidate specifically because of the way the party treated Dr. Paul, his ideas, his delegates and his followers. I know this for a fact because I am one of them and I know hundreds that, like me, could not bring themselves to vote for another "lesser-of-two-evils."

The Republican party is dead.

If all those people living in the innercity of blue leftist enclaves are making more than $30,000 then there is a man in the moon too. They are too busy killing each other to MAKE $30,000. They may be getting it via welfare, but they are not making it. Again, the 47% ($49%) was only a reference to federal income tax. I'm guessing that figure is over 50% now. I can pretty much guarantee that by far the majority of those people in the 47% (49%) category, both in blue commie states and red patriot states, are obummer voters. Upwards of 90% of them are on the democrap plantation.
