Shimon Peres is an extraordinarily likable and gentle individual and a symbol to the world of Israel's longstanding desire for peace in the region, and as such he is respected and loved by many. However, as Tony Blair recently remarked, the biggest roadblock to peace in the middle east may be a "problem within Islam". Who could have imagined, for example, that Anwar Sadat would be assassinated for negotiating a peace treaty between Egypt and Israel? Who could have imagined that the democratically elected government in Gaza has in its charter, not peace with Israel, not co-existence with Israel, but rather the utter destruction and elimination of Israel. Who could have imagined that the former president of Iran would say that Israel should be "wiped off the map"? Unfortunately, Shimon Peres may be a symbol of an earlier day when the Israelis and many others in the West entertained the naive fantasy that Israel's neighbors would ever want to live in peace with a non-Muslim nation. Perhaps it is no surprise that the biggest fans of Mr. Peres come from the Hollywood Dream Factory. Although Mr. Peres may indeed be some sort of wizard, it is increasingly clear that the middle east is no Oz.

The confirmed unteachability of mankind.

At least we in Israel should by now be wide awake and “teachable”. Why are so many of us still not?

In the House of Commons, on May 2, 1935, Winston Churchill said:

“When the situation was manageable it was neglected, and now that it is thoroughly out of hand, we apply the remedies which then might have effected a cure. There is nothing new in the story. It is as old as the Sibylline books. It falls into that long dismal catalogue of the fruitlessness of experience and the confirmed unteachability of mankind. Want of foresight, unwillingness to act when action would be simple and effective, lack of clear thinking, confusion of counsel until the emergency comes, until self-preservation strikes its jarring gong – these are the features which constitute the endless repetition of history.

Expecting Peres to ever admit he did anything wrong is futile. The real question is why so many Israeli leaders and Israeli citizens ever thought that Peres was anything but a liar and a traitor? I would like to believe that my fellow Jews have a high level of morality and intelligence. But so much experience shows that despite certain genetic qualities we Jews can be both stupid and immoral.

Israel is a LIBERAL state (Look no further than Sodom and Gomorrah Tel Aviv) which should pretty much answer most questions right there.
And yet the world press - and even the Jerusalem Post - continues to lionize the man. This is what the JPost said in an editorial:

"As he celebrates his 90th birthday – which technically falls on August 2 – our popular president should be honored not just as a national treasure, but as a source of inspiration and hope for the future."

Are they joking?
