Is USC Another Left-Wing Seminary?

usc-sign-600-thumb-600x450-17891Last week, a USC student released 15 minutes of excerpts from videos he had made of his political science professor, Darry Sragow.

Here is some of what the USC professor said to his students:

“California Republicans [are] really stupid and racist.”

” … Republicans are 82 percent white. Losers.”

“The Republican Party in California … is the last vestige of angry old white people. ”

“The Republicans are trying to prevent people of color and people of lower income from voting by requiring voter ID.”

“We discovered, and this is generally true, the least flexible voter in America, the person who’s less likely to change their mind about anything is an old white guy. Old white guys are stubborn sons of bitches.”

“There are tens of thousands of people who are now dead because George Bush, even though he got fewer votes, became the president of the United States. That’s a fact. … I think the election got stolen. That’s what I think. … [the Republicans] stole the election. And this happens all the time.”

“Probably the biggest vulnerability that Romney has … [is] that the guy doesn’t understand normal human beings.”

“All campaigns have a message it communicates to the voters:

[The Democratic message is] “Vote for Obama because he’s gonna create jobs and keep the peace and protect social security.”

[The Republican message is] “Vote for Romney because Obama is all f——ed up … ”

“The Republican Party is increasingly the last refuge of old, angry white people who don’t like what’s going on in this country.”

Some points regarding Sragow’s statements:

1. None had anything to do with teaching.

2. Each one is left-wing propaganda, examples of the widespread attempts at our universities to indoctrinate rather educate.

3. Some are not merely indoctrination, they are also false. For example, blacks are considerably less likely than whites “to change their mind about anything” political. Since 1964, the black Democrat vote has been consistently over 80 percent.

4. Though he is teaching at a university, Sragow has no compunction about cursing while “teaching.” Cursing in public is characteristic of leftism. I provide many examples and explain why in my book “Still the Best Hope.”

5. Substitute “old black” for “old white” and Sragow would have been suspended, if not fired. Substitute “old white women” for “old white men” and Sragow would have been suspended, if not fired.

6. According to his fellow liberal, Tom Brokaw, “old white guys” are “The Greatest Generation.” Which is it?

What was USC’s official response?

As reported in the campus newspaper, Daily Trojan: “The university responded Friday with a statement affirming faculty members’ right to express their views.”

And in the words of USC Provost Elizabeth Garrett: “The freedom to take unpopular positions and the freedom to express those positions publicly are at the foundation of what it means to be a faculty member of a university.”

For the record, in 2009 USC Vice President of Student Affairs, Michael Jackson, published “an open letter to the USC community” in the Daily Trojan, attacking the College Republicans for inviting conservative activist David Horowitz to campus.

But USC in no way condemned Sragow.

Furthermore, Garrett was wrong about universities and dishonest about USC. She was wrong about “what it means to be a faculty member of a university.” It is not about taking “unpopular positions;” it is about teaching truth to the best of the professor’s ability. And attacks on Republicans are hardly “unpopular positions” at USC, or at virtually any other American university. On the contrary, they are the dominant positions there.

For Provost Garrett’s sake, therefore, here are some unpopular positions at USC:

—Marriage should remain defined as the union of a man and a woman.

—The human fetus should have at least as much right to life as, let us say, a dog.

—America is the greatest force for good in the world.

—Fighting communism in Vietnam was a morally noble venture.

—The greatest problem in black American life is not racism or poverty but the absence of fathers.

—The most effective — often the only — way to stop great evil is through war.

—More men than women are more willing to work more hours at a job.

—More women are likely to find happiness in a successful marriage and family than in a successful career.

—At this moment in history, the world has more to fear from fundamentalist Muslims than from fundamentalist Christians, Jews, Hindus or Buddhists.

Provost Garrett might want to inquire as to how many USC professors subscribe to, let alone, advocate in class, any of those positions.

At the Daily Trojan website, one commenter after another articulated what may be the only solution to USC and other universities having become left-wing seminaries:

Scott: “I am paying $65,000 per year for my son to be fed this hateful nonsense? The fact that the administration is not mortified by these statements is telling. Shame on USC.”

Mike: “Lost a lot of respect for my alma mater today. They won’t get another dollar from me.”

KJM: “I am alum and hereby withholding any further support of my alma mater.”

Non-leftists who give money to an American university are usually funding the erosion of that university as well as the erosion of their own values.

The solution is not just conservative alumni with-holding funds. It's organizing and funding the creation of conservative, free-market disciplines.

until I looked at the receipt for $6957, I be certain …that…my sister woz like they say realey taking home money part time on their apple laptop.. there best friend has done this for less than 17 months and just now cleard the mortgage on there condo and bought themselves a Jaguar E-type. we looked here, kep2.com

The Saudis use money to create MESA depts in universities across the country….and then make their annual donations conditional on who is teaching what in these programs, thereby controlling the content of education in this field. Conservatives should employ the same methods, creating studies dept's based on free-market principles, constitutional government, intellectual freedom, etc., and then making annual grants conditional upon curriculum that remains faithful to the original ideals and intentions of the dept's. This way, they won't be gradually usurped by left-wing professors.

But it takes organization, folks. It will take conservative alumni banding together to pool their efforts and their money. And the best way to motivate them into doing so is to expose the intellectual corruption of the humanities that has so effectively destroyed higher education in America.

In that vein, lets give a grateful nod to Dennis Prager, Daniel Pipes, Martin Kramer, and most of all, our own David Horowitz…..keep up the good work gentlemen!

Academia invariably gets infiltrated by leftists. It's the nature of the beast. People who want to indoctrinate kids will gravitate to the teaching profession and drown out the teacher that doesn't want to have a svengali-like sway/hold over the masses of children to turn them into the next generation of No Information Voters.

Obviously this is pure garbage, and the prof's message is blown apart because if you were to ask any Republican if they would like more blacks to agree to conservative principles, the answer would be an overwhelming "YES!".
This country wouldn't be some screwed up if there were more latinos, blacks, whites and asians that wanted a smaller and less intrusive government. And I believe they are out there, they are just afraid of being lambasted by friends and family. I have a close black friend from the army. We are almost like brothers and I have stayed with his family. Great people and quite conservative and from what they say, have voted Republican since Reagan. They are active in their church and community matters but believe what we "stupid whites" believe because it makes the most sense and is beneficial to everyone.

This idiot prof wants everyone to believe that the GOP actively restricts blacks from joining which is utter nonsense, but repeating the lie over and over brings the perception. Perhaps we true believers can reach out to any black, asian and latino (Cubans tend to be conservative though) and explain this.
And yes, Obama is all ****ed up!

Professor Sragow has every right to his warped and distorted opinions ….in private.
When teaching on the university level, students are not paying outrageous tuition rates to be force fed propaganda.
It must be just the facts, sir. The proof of your lies are in the sad state of the Californa pudding…

    • RandyAnn

      Exactly.
Republicans have no power in Cali, so blaming them for the woes of the state is simply pathetic propaganda of the worst kind. Free speech for leftist professors is fine until it affects donations in any way…

  • Charles Wenzel

Well, it won't currently happen in CA with their super majority of (Far Left) Dems in their State Congress, but in Red States
(whoever pulled that coup to where 'Red' i.e. socialists/communist, States became designated as Blue and actual 'Blue'–as in 'blue blooded' i.e. the traditional establishment–States are called Red)
the fault of tax-payer funded colleges and universities being hot beds of Leftists ideologue professors is with the State Congress. With our taxes and tuitions we're feeding the ravenous wolves who are devouring our younger citizens.

  • Fred

I had professors in college like that and I just ignored them, and their twisted teachings made me more of a conservative.

  • pierce

This Professor must be a genuine and glorified idiot, and for him to bring up the racist issue means he is blacker than black, if that is possible.

Hi ,welcome to some (tho not all) Academe today. Instead of goal of Better Thinking, dispassionate fair-minded incisive "both-and" deliberation toward veracity, we often have food-fight pro OR con. As we know, Liberal Left teaches goal of indoctrination into Social Justice improvement etc. But the Conservative Right would bring back core courses in Western Civ. values. Fine, EXCEPT I suspect that they also would implement indoctrination that West. Civ. had the gospel, the mantra. Instead of using our heritage tradition to see the bad AND the good, and as grist for the mill for teaching Thinking. Namely, to foster student competence in the big question: "Is there anything truly new? What of the past is bad but also still good? What of the new is good but also questionable?" Do you see the point here? Such Dispassionate Inquiry seems the HEART of strengthening a democracy, and yet is it taught as such?………………….
