3 Members of US Civil Rights Commission Warn Amnesty will Increase Black Unemployment

And if you can follow the math on this, higher unemployment leads to more crime, social tension and social welfare use. The cost from even a 1 percent increase in black unemployment would be severe.

Three members of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights urged the Congressional Black Caucus to consider how the immigration proposal could cause black Americans to lose job opportunities.

“The obvious question is whether there are sufficient jobs in the low-skilled labor market for both African-Americans and illegal immigrants,”  USCCR members Peter Kirsanow, Abigail Thernstrom, and Gail Heriot in a letter sent today to Congressional Black Caucus chairwoman Marcia Fudge, D-Ohio. “The answer is no.”

The members recalled a 2008 USCCR hearing that concluded that amnesty would harm black Americans.

“The briefing witnesses, well-regarded scholars from leading universities and independent groups, were ideologically diverse,” they wrote. “All the witnesses acknowledged that illegal immigration has a negative impact on black employment, both in terms of employment opportunities and wages.”

Kirsanow and Thernstrom are Republican appointees to the commission. Heriot is a registered independent who was appointed by Congress.

Considering that a sizable chunk of the Republican Party has climbed on board the amnesty train, even a Republican dissent is significant. Abigail Thernstrom is a serious well-regarded scholar. Heriot is an independent. None of these are people who come from the right.

The opposing view all involves delving into an imaginary utopia in which legalizing illegals will somehow cause an economic boom that will offset all the negatives.

The economic argument for illegal alien amnesty is not fundamentally different than Obama’s budgets. It depends on a completely implausible belief that destructive policies will lead to runaway growth and then calculates the economic effect of those policies in line with the unrealistic projections.
