80% of New York High School Grads Can’t Read Despite Being No. 1 in School Spending

Bloomberg’s big pitch when running for office was that he was going to be the education mayor. After three terms, he seems to be spending more time intervening in congressional races in other states than dealing with petty matters like hurricanes and snowstorms at home. And while Bloomy is fighting for gun control in the Midwest, Johnny Brooklyn can’t read.

The problem isn’t a lack of money. New York State is No. 1 in per pupil spending in the country blowing $18,126 per student and New York City tops that by spending $19,000 per student. And it can’t compete in literacy with much lower per pupil spending states like Utah. It can’t compete at all despite going deep into debt to pay for this public mess.

New York City may dump fortunes into its public schools, but it’s family values that make it possible for students to learn, not more teachers.

Nearly 80 percent of New York City high school graduates need to relearn basic skills before they can enter the City University’s community college system.

Officials told CBS 2′s Kramer that nearly 80 percent of those who graduate from city high schools arrived at City University’s community college system without having mastered the skills to do college-level work.

In sheer numbers it means that nearly 11,000 kids who got diplomas from city high schools needed remedial courses to re-learn the basics.

In its defense, the NYC Department of Education said it has raised high school graduation rates by 40 percent over the last seven years. And that the number of students needing remedial courses to do college work has declined slightly — by half a percentage point overall.

And there’s your problem. Promotion results in graduating students who don’t know anything. High school grad rates increase, but the high school graduates don’t know anything. And their college becomes an extension of high school. Eventually a PhD becomes the equivalent of a college degree and then a high school degree. And then we’re Russia or Cuba, boasting about our education rates despite the fact that the diplomas we hand out are mostly worthless.

But I’m sure Bloomberg will just blame his failure on Global Warming or the NRA.

My grandmother came to New York City from Russia in 1888, at the age of eight. She then went to the pubic schools of New York – and learned English, reading, writing, and arithmetic. She left school at the age of 12 (because her father did not believe in education for girls and 12 was the school leaving age), but she wrote very well – as her letters show. Her younger brother went to the same schools, and then went on to college at CCNY. How the finest school system in the U.S. has fallen!

I'll drink five medium sodas to the departure of this moron. Cheers!!!

I drink soda spiked with salt out of a Big Gulp sized Styrofoam cup in one hand and my AR 15 in the other…Heil Bloomy, Heil Obammy

"But I’m sure Bloomberg will just blame his failure on Global Warming or the NRA." Or on sugar, or salt, or obesity, or on styrofoam cups, or Big Gulps. He's an intellectual giant, don't you know?

Edward, moreover, we are talking about a bastion of leftism, most especially the thuggish teacher's unions. As to NYC, these are my stomping grounds and I know its players like the back of my hand. As to the Demsters, the tales yet to be told….

In any case, most importantly, dumbing down the kiddies IS the plan, and this is no twisted joke. Demsters who back domestic terrorists, man-child devotees too, well, they are hardly all about the kiddies – in a good way! http://adinakutnicki.com/2012/12/25/domestic-terr

Don't forget his expertise in emergency room prescribing of pain medication

Bloomberg has no clue what is going on. As a typical lefty (RINO), he just thinks that throwing more money at any given problem will just automatically solve it.

  • Toni_Pereira

If his great literary refference is the books he is holding, maybe 20% is to much.

I've personally never seen this problem, but you know it is bad when schools have low graduation rates and what few graduates who do come out of the school system have a hard time reading, performing basic math and stringing together a readable sentence much less a paragraph.

    • Larry

The problem is far too many schools don't have low graduation rates, and the graduates they produce are illiterate, innumerate, and incapable of applying critical assessment to any situation beyond where to get their next drug deal.

    Dummy Yorkers, who'd thunk?

Be aware while poking fun at their folly, that he who control's the education system, in due time holds the power to alter the course of a nation in a single generation! Conservatives must be aware and pay close attention to ALL judicial nominees in all FED courts as this is the last leg of the stool saving us from the Neo-Marxist imposing their vaughnted Utopia! A serious danger posed to America is the Neo-Marxists' real ideology of Cultural Marxism subversively masquerading as (PC) political correctness! It's coming to a school district near you in the form of CSCOPE or CCORE! We better be prepared and expose this! GOD SPEED!

Schools used to be where farmers sent their children for fundamentals as their was no resources in the middle of rural Ohio or Tennessee. A family would be lucky to own a Bible.

Now they have turned into dumping grounds for parents who hate their children and view them as a mistake. Including college schools crept into glorified daycare. Parents care less about their children as long as schools accept responsibility over them, allowing parents time to run their crooked schemes and drug deals.

With excess public resources schools no longer serve their original purpose and have become a drain on society. Considering the number of students raped by their teachers and shot to death by their classmates, they have done much more harm to people than those they may have helped.

Obama said we should act as long as we can save just one child. How about acting by removing your fat gluttonous mouth from the school tax teat.

It's not only in New York that education has been going down the drain. There is a deliberate attempt from the leftists to replace education with indoctrination, and it has been going on for a long time.

History is used to distort facts making America the evil champion of capitalism and imperialism. As to geography, together with "social studies", it allows teachers to promote islam as a much maligned, peaceful religion so that more useful idiots are created. Only last week a Texas school made students wear burkas and behave as muslims to convince them of islam’s meekness.

Not only can't these kids read fluently after graduating, but they can't write other than in block letters and they can’t spell either. All they can do is phonetically type messages on their cell phones, which unfortunately is not going to be of much use when applying for a job. Their vocabulary is very limited, as to the 4 operations… their cell phones include calculators, so why bother!

And that’s not all: look at the TV programs these socialists have designed for teenagers. Most are about supernatural creatures in supernatural worlds with tons of special effects – everything is unreal. And when it comes to earthly matters, sex is the main topic. Nothing has been left out to create a generation of total morons.

Public education is a disaster, our kids are being enslaved.
