91,000 Prisoners Claimed More Than $757 Million in Tax Refunds

The good news is that under the new austerity they only got 35 million dollars.

From 2004 to 2010 the number of inmates that swindled the government increased from 18,000 to over 91,000 and the refunds claimed skyrocketed from $68 million to $757 million. The IRS pats itself on the back for blocking $722 million in tax refunds to inmates during 2010, but it still handed out more than $35 million.

That kind of increase wouldn’t be happening if the scam weren’t paying off. And what’s strange is that the number of fradulent tax returns appears to have more than doubled between 2009 and 2010.

The first major increase took place between 2005 and 2007. In 2005, 21,254 fraudulent tax returns were filed claiming 80.4 million dollars. By 2007, that number had risen to 37,447 tax returns and 165.9 million dollars claimed. That major increase coincides with the Democratic Congress.

In 2009, there was another leap from 44,944 returns claiming 295 million to 91,434 returns claiming 757.6 million dollars. That is another major change, this time taking place in the Obama era.
